Stimuli-Responsive Chemotherapy For Glioblastoma: Sequence-Dependent Synergy Of Cold Atmospheric Plasma And Ultrasound With Cationic Lipo-Doxo, Alessandro Cazzolla
Stimuli-Responsive Chemotherapy For Glioblastoma: Sequence-Dependent Synergy Of Cold Atmospheric Plasma And Ultrasound With Cationic Lipo-Doxo, Alessandro Cazzolla
Theses
Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive, infiltrative astrocytic tumour in which pharmacotherapy remains constrained by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the heterogeneously altered blood brain tumour barrier, with additional limitations imposed by active efflux and the complexity of the tumour microenvironment. In this setting, externally addressable strategies that modulate transport and uptake at the site of disease are required. A stimuli-responsive chemotherapy platform was developed in which Lipo-DOXO was combined with two non-invasive physical modalities, low-frequency ultrasound (US) and cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), to enhance intratumoural delivery while limiting off-target effects. Liposomes were produced by thin-film hydration followed by a controlled, …
Inflection Points In Academic Career Trajectories: Statistical Modeling And Interactive Visualization, Aicha Malouche
Inflection Points In Academic Career Trajectories: Statistical Modeling And Interactive Visualization, Aicha Malouche
Theses
This thesis examines the temporal structure of academic career trajectories, with a particular focus on identifying non-linear patterns of research productivity and moments of maximum acceleration in scientific impact. Situated within the broader context of bibliometric evaluation, the study responds to long-standing limitations of aggregate and linear career models that obscure heterogeneity across disciplines and national research systems. Drawing on theories of cumulative advantage, life-cycle productivity, and structural stratification, the research seeks to clarify how and when elite researchers experience peak growth in impact over the course of their careers. The study is guided by four research questions: (1) when …

Microplastics In St. John, United States Virgin Islands Sediments: Methodological Approaches And Variability Of Microplastics Concentrations And Accumulation Rates, Henry B. Arbaugh, Sarah C. Gray, Dimitri Deheyn
Theses
Sediment samples were collected from a near shore and reef site in Coral Bay, St. John, United States Virgin Islands (USVI) from 2007-2016, using tube sediment traps. These samples provide an opportunity to study microplastics (MPs) in an area where no previous MP studies have been performed. Most sedimentary MP studies utilize benthic samples which can only measure MP concentrations (#MP/g or #MP/mL sediment), while sediment traps can provide MP accumulation rates (#MP/cm2/day) as a function of time. However, the methods used for extracting MPs from benthic samples have not been tested using sediment trap samples whose characteristics, …

Assessing Localized Recovery And Synchrony Of An Endangered Wetland Species., Aiyana Reissman
Assessing Localized Recovery And Synchrony Of An Endangered Wetland Species., Aiyana Reissman
Theses
The state and federally endangered light-footed Ridgway’s rail (LFRR; Rallus obsoletus levipes) is central to regional conservation, yet the drivers of its population fluctuations remain poorly understood. The fragmented nature of coastal wetlands in Southern California is threatening the existence of endemic species like the LFRR. Tidal inundation, severe storms, and overpredation threaten the survival of LFRR. This study addresses population fluctuations by analyzing the spatial and temporal drivers of LFRR populations to inform effective, site-specific management.
To do this, a 45-year (1980–2024) LFRR census data set across 16 wetlands throughout its range in California was synthesized. A multi-faceted …

Exploring Interpenetrating Networks Derived From Compostable Polymers In Separations, Hailey Holshouser
Exploring Interpenetrating Networks Derived From Compostable Polymers In Separations, Hailey Holshouser
Theses
The increasing demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable water treatment technologies drives the development of membranes that work to balance mechanical durability, tunable selectivity, and long-term stability. In this exploratory work, an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) membrane system composed of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) was developed to provide a more compostable and compatible platform for advanced separation applications. While the compostability of the entire framework was not tested, the dominant presence of PBAT in the matrix makes the membrane intrinsically favorable for composting. Mechanochemical Ionic Electrochromic Generators (IEGens) were synthesized and incorporated into the PBAT backbone for …

Inflex : A Scalable Framework For Malware Analysis, Correlation, And Steganography Detection, Luke Bower
Theses
Modern malware campaigns operate in stages across diverse formats, including PE, ELF, shellcode, and malicious documents, some leveraging steganography to deliver payloads such as Quasar RAT and Lokibot. Because analysis tooling remains siloed by artifact type, analysts struggle to identify shared code reuse, behavioral overlap, and campaign relationships when adversaries avoid traditional indicators. This thesis presents INFLEX, a framework that normalizes diverse artifacts through a unified pipeline combining static analysis, emulated behavioral extraction, sandbox execution, and threat intelligence enrichment. Its correlation layer introduces Variant Resilient Function Hashing (VRFH), validated against fuzzy hashing baselines on targeted samples, and Weighted Artifact Fusion …

Ties Of Influence: The Armistead-Winston Network And Elite Mobility From Virginia To The Southern Frontier., Mindy L D Bates
Theses
This thesis examines how the Armistead and Winston families leveraged intergenerational kinship networks to preserve and reproduce elite authority as they migrated from colonial Virginia to the southern frontier. Rather than viewing migration as an individual pursuit, this study demonstrates that family alliances, shared resources, and long-standing ties shaped opportunity and authority across generations. Using family papers, letters, land deeds, wills, journals, and family trees, this project highlights how these connections functioned as forms of social capital that guided settlement, land acquisition, and community leadership on the frontier. This study serves as a guide for understanding how kinship networks operated …

Empowering Change: Impact Of Motivational Interviewing On First-Semester Nursing Students' Perceived Confidence And Communication Skills, Norma L. Branyon
Theses
Background: Effective communication is vital when interacting with others, regardless of the profession. When healthcare providers lack the skills to facilitate conversations about behavior changes, poor patient outcomes can be produced. New graduate nurses often encounter difficulties in effectively communicating with patients and display reluctance to engage with patients and their families. Ineffective communication may lead to increased anxiety, miscommunication, and mistrust. This communication gap can hinder therapeutic relationships, patient engagement, and overall health outcomes. Communication plays a crucial role in student nurses’ self-confidence, motivation, and personal and professional growth. Therefore, role transition for new nurses can be difficult and …
The Southern Roots Of Populist Rhetoric And The Growth Of Fundamentalism, Ethan Teems
The Southern Roots Of Populist Rhetoric And The Growth Of Fundamentalism, Ethan Teems
Theses
The religious fundamentalism of the 1920s was a direct evolution of the Southern Populist movement of the 1890s. While populism began as a political crusade against economic exploitation, industrialization, and urbanization, it evolved into a movement that attacked modernity. The southern United States was rooted in a predominantly religiously homogeneous society. The Protestant religions that encompassed the region were unwilling to adapt to a changing society, allowing religious fundamentalism to expand.
Beginning with the cultural conflicts of the 1920s, such as the Scopes Trial and William Jennings Bryan’s activism, the study explains how fundamentalists framed their struggles against modernism as …

'Guide The Tide' - Supervision Of International Medical Graduates In The Emergency Department: A Mixed Methods Study, Purnasankar Bhowmik
Theses
Australia’s emergency departments (EDs) have experienced significant stress since the COVID-19 pandemic. An increase in the number of patient presentations, a lack of in-patient beds for the disposition of admitted patients and long waiting times are contributing factors jeopardising patient safety. In addition, the shortage of skilled staff to look after patients in the ED is the paramount concern currently and moving forward. Similarly to many other specialty areas of medicine, EDs rely on international medical graduates (IMGs) to fill the gaps in the medical workforce. However, concerns have been raised regarding IMG diversity in training requirements, clinical skills and …

Optimisation Of Sampling For A New Skin Microbiome Assay Pilot Study, Anita Smith
Theses
Recent interest in the diverse ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and viruses that make up the skin microbiome has led to numerous studies investigating the microbiome in healthy skin and in dermatological diseases. An imbalance of the normal skin microbial flora can cause some skin diseases, and current culture techniques are often unable to detect a microorganism to further our understanding of the clinical–microbiological correlates of disease and dysbiosis. Atopic dermatitis and rosacea are presentations that General practitioners (GPs) often manage that may have an infective or microbiological component and can be challenging to treat. Further research using culture-independent techniques is …

Cultural Crossroads: Dubai's Cultural Influence On Mobility & The 20-Minute City Feasibility, Hiba Malik
Theses
The research explores the feasibility of the 20-minute city concept in the context of Dubai, an idea that was first proposed by Professor Carlos Moreno in 2016. While this model, which is based upon the theory that residents should be able to reach essential services within a certain time (i.e., 15 or 20 minutes), has been adopted globally in various cities across the world, its application within non-Western, high- income, car-dependent settings remains largely unexplored. For this reason, this study analyzes the 20- minute city concept in Dubai s unique context within its sociocultural, climatic, and cultural settings in the …

Leveraging Open-Source Llms For Infrastructure Drift Detection And Correction, Kemoy S. Campbell
Theses
Infrastructure as Code (IaC) enables organizations to provision and manage infrastructure at scale using version-controlled, declarative specifications. Despite these advantages, infrastructure drift where deployed resources diverge from their intended configuration remains a persistent operational challenge and is often addressed manually and reactively. Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) have accelerated their adoption within software engineering and DevOps workflows; however, the sensitive nature of IaC artifacts, particularly Terraform state files, has limited organizational willingness to rely on public LLM services for drift detection and remediation. This thesis investigates the feasibility of using open-source, self-hosted LLMs to assist with IaC drift …

Reflux Micro-Aspiration: Natural History, Pathophysiology, Clinical Presentation And Treatment, Oleksandr Khoma
Theses
Background
The accurate diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal reflux pulmonary micro-aspiration has only become possible recently with the introduction of a novel technique of reflux micro-aspiration scintigraphy study combined with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) combined with x-ray tomography (CT) in a hybrid instrument (1-3). This has allowed the accurate diagnosis of pulmonary and airway contamination with refluxate. Previously only patients with large volume symptomatic reflux aspiration were diagnosed clinically (Mendelson syndrome) or by 2-dimentional barium meal or an older plantar (2 dimensional) technique of scintigraphic aspiration studies. The concept of reflux micro-aspiration has been implicated in multiple pulmonary diseases but …

Characterization Of Krypton Ion Sputtering Of Spacecraft Materials Using Electric Propulsion, Ethan Cummins
Theses
In the field of electric propulsion (EP), xenon is the most commonly used gas for ionization. However, krypton has been identified as a potential substitute due to its high specific impulse and low cost compared to xenon. Therefore, there is a desire to understand the effects of using krypton. In EP, sputtering of spacecraft materials downstream of the ion engines have proven to be an issue during long duration missions. This research observes how krypton ions sputter a variety of spacecraft materials (anodized aluminum, glass, BN ceramic, and Kapton). The experiments in this study subject materials to different sputtering variables …

Spatially-Distributed Imu Array Navigation : Virtual Imu And Federated Approaches With Applications To Uncrewed Aerial Systems, Jackson Neese
Theses
This thesis investigated lever arm effects on distributed inertial measurement unit (IMU) array navigation and evaluated the performance of multiple fusion architectures with applications to uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). The Kalman Filters comprise of three filters: a naive baseline, a filter tracking lever arm as a filter state, and a filter constraining lever arm state estimates around known values. These filters feed into a virtual IMU fusing raw measurements and a federated filter combining output states. Each are evaluated with equal, static, and dynamic weighting based on lever arm and sensor noise. Experiments on indoor and outdoor UAS datasets reveal …

System-Level Analysis And Experimental Testing Of A Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine With Water Electrolysis Propellants, Justin M. Byers
Theses
This work explores the potential benefits and practical feasibility of a rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) spacecraft thruster using water electrolysis for propellant generation. Such a thruster can enable the use of liquid water as an easily storable and chemically inert propellant, as well as the volume and efficiency benefits associated with detonation combustion. A thermodynamic model is first developed to demonstrate the compounding advantages of both water electrolysis propellant generation and detonation combustion when compared to conventional isobaric combustion cycles. Comparisons are also drawn to alternative water-powered propulsion methods and the advantages of chemical propulsion are observed. The representative …
Enhanced Pulsar Timing Precision For The Era Of Nanohertz Gravitational Wave Astronomy, Sofia V. Sosa Fiscella
Enhanced Pulsar Timing Precision For The Era Of Nanohertz Gravitational Wave Astronomy, Sofia V. Sosa Fiscella
Theses
In 2023, several international collaborations comprising the International Pulsar Timing Array achieved a major scientific milestone with the first detection of a signal in pulsar timing observations consistent with the signature expected from a stochastic gravitational wave background, created by an ensemble of unresolved supermassive black hole binaries in the early Universe. The next breakthrough in the field is expected to be the first detection of a continuous wave from a single such binary, which would allow us to better understand their evolution and that of our Universe. However, this feat will require unprecedented precision in our timing measurements. To …

Predicting Undergraduate Fallout And Success, Ammar Ahmed Alzarooni
Theses
Universities need to uncover students who are likely to drop out early and do something about it. It should be easy to find and use this information. This thesis evaluated interpretable machine-learning models (MLMs) for predicting three final student outcomes including Dropout, Enrolled and Graduate, using solely demographic, administrative/financial and first-semester academic variables. Study employed publicly accessible Portuguese UCI student retention dataset (4,424 records) and incorporated end-of-Semester-1 feature window to prevent look-ahead leakage and align with actual advising cycles. We trained and compared models using stratified validation, explicit class-imbalance handling and decision-threshold optimization to make dropout detection most critical factor. …
