Theses

This study was developed to solve recognized problems in reading, grammar and social attitudes.

As the study began, it was meant to involve as much variety &a possible to induce reasons for reading. When the enthusiasm for puppetry was noticed. in children, it was decided to place a major emphasis on creating a variety of puppets for the classroom.

Special people became involved, some members of St. Louis Puppetry Guild, Connie Borgmeyer and Mrs. Gilman, art supervisors, Virginia Terry, library science teacher, and parents who became interested along the way as the study progressed.

From prescribed reading stories, the class …

An Examination Of The Interface Between Cross-Cultural Trainers And The Business Community In The United States, From The Perspective Of The Trainer, Alexander Patico Jun 1979

An Examination Of The Interface Between Cross-Cultural Trainers And The Business Community In The United States, From The Perspective Of The Trainer, Alexander Patico

Theses

This paper is the product of a particular stage in its author's professional and intellectual development . Its purpose is to use the special vantage point of a (relatively) disinterested observer, in order to form a novel picture of a particular population, comprised of those persons who are engaged in cross-cultural training--more especially, those who, as outside consultants , seek or maintain a clientele among members of the U.S. business community. I believe it likely that this viewpoint could not as readily be taken by one who is already fully involved in the daily practice of cross-cultural training.

Every effort …

A New Mathematical Model For Nephron Macromolecular Selectivity, John Anthony Domiter May 1979

A New Mathematical Model For Nephron Macromolecular Selectivity, John Anthony Domiter

Theses

A mathematical model describing the displayed selectivity of the kidney nephron to macromolecules of varying particle size is presented. Diffusion and electrical forces are considered to be the sole mechanisms of transfer. The mass transfer principles responsible for selectivity are considered to occur within the capillary structure, and not within the membrane wall. A charge is assumed to be characteristic of the macromolecule and the membrane wall. Models describing both charged and uncharged solutes are developed.

A non-linear least squares technique, developed by Marquardt, is used to curve fit the derived functions to data relating fractional clearances of dextran and …

A Three-Dimensional Kinematic Model Of The Human Knee, Wayne Ke-Wung Li May 1979

A Three-Dimensional Kinematic Model Of The Human Knee, Wayne Ke-Wung Li

Theses

This thesis describes two kinematic models of human knee which may be used to study the motion of the knee and the forces in the ligaments of the knee. In one model, the ligaments are simulated by rigid links connected to links representing the articulating bones at the centroids of the areas of insertion of the ligaments. The condylar higher pair connections are simulated by equivalent linkages connected by resolutes. In an advanced model, the rigid ligament links are replaced by springs.

The IMP procedure, a powerful kinematic linkage analysis method, is employed to study the motion and forces in …

A Study On The Growth And Asparaginase Production Of Vibrio Succinogenes In A Chemostat, Preston David Krautheim May 1979

A Study On The Growth And Asparaginase Production Of Vibrio Succinogenes In A Chemostat, Preston David Krautheim

Theses

A continuous fermentation assembly was constructed and studies on the growth of the organism, Vibrio succinogenes, and its production of asparaginase was conducted. Results were compared with that already performed on a batch system and showed that a continuous fermentation produced 31.83 I.U. enzymes/mM ammonium formate compared to 17.4 I.U. enzyme/mM formate for batch.

Some of the runs performed indicated that the organism was washing out or giving very low specific growth rates. It was decided that this was not due to operational parameters of the chemostat, but possible chemical contamination in the medium. With all things considered, a continuous …

An Equilibrium Theory Of The Ph-Parametric Pump, Charles Omotayo Kerobo May 1979

An Equilibrium Theory Of The Ph-Parametric Pump, Charles Omotayo Kerobo

Theses

Parametric pumping, both batch and continuous, and cycling zone adsorption are theoretically scrutinized for various operating conditions by using the concept of equilibrium stages. The model system is Haemoglobin-Albumin-CM sepharose, a physical system in which a local equilibrium between liquid and sorbent in the layers of the separating medium in the column is characterized. For the batch process, the steady-state concentrations in both top and bottom reservoirs are found to be independent of the number of equilibrium stages, provided that a = 1 (i.e., number of transfer steps/number of stages).. For continuous parapump process, separation is enhanced with decreasing top …

Minimization Of Unwanted X-Ray Exposures On Conventional Photographic Films By Developer Modification, Michael L. Rudolph May 1979

Minimization Of Unwanted X-Ray Exposures On Conventional Photographic Films By Developer Modification, Michael L. Rudolph

Theses

Experiments were done to reduce the influence of unwanted X-ray exposures on Kodak Plus-X film. Variations of surface developer components showed no favorable results. The concentration of KBr was varied up to 10 grams per liter with again, no favorable results. The incorperation of benzitriazole decreased base plus fog from values of .81 to .56 with a significant decrease in speed. Phenyl mercaptotetrazole was extreamly effective in decreasing both base plus fog and speed.

An Investigation Of The Emotional Connotations Of Printing Types, Michael Blum May 1979

An Investigation Of The Emotional Connotations Of Printing Types, Michael Blum

Theses

This thesis addresses itself to the problem of understanding the emotional connotations of printing types. It is hypothesized that there is a model useful in predicting reactions to a given type style based on atmosphere value and usage. The majority of the literature on this subject is nonempirical. It is characterized by the author's stating their opinions with little or no attempt to validate them. The empirical literature shows that there is an emotional connotation associated with particular type faces. These studies have not shown, however, the importance of this connotation in terms of appropriate choice of type faces . …

Testing Communicative Competence: A New Approach Based On Discourse Analysis, Margaret B. Silver May 1979

Testing Communicative Competence: A New Approach Based On Discourse Analysis, Margaret B. Silver

Theses

This thesis proposes a new method for assessing communicative competence among ESL learners by using discourse analysis as the foundation for a placement test. Margaret B. Silver critiques conventional evaluation tools—such as the Ilyin Oral Interview, the STEL grammar test, and cloze procedures—arguing that they fail to measure the full range of linguistic and sociolinguistic abilities necessary for real-world communication. These traditional assessments, while helpful in measuring grammatical knowledge, overlook important features such as pronunciation, intonation, kinesics, and the ability to convey meaning in context.

Silver’s approach draws on discourse analysis to evaluate how students actually use language in unscripted …

A Design For Organizational Structure: Ambulatory Care Services In The Department Of Health And Hospitals, City Of St. Louis, Edward M. Peters May 1979

A Design For Organizational Structure: Ambulatory Care Services In The Department Of Health And Hospitals, City Of St. Louis, Edward M. Peters

Theses

This paper by Edward M. Peters explores the organizational design of ambulatory care services within the Department of Health and Hospitals in St. Louis, driven by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Municipal Health Services Program. It begins by detailing the current challenges within St. Louis’s health department structure, emphasizing the need for integrated, neighborhood-based healthcare services to serve underserved communities.

Peters examines three organizational models: maintaining the current structure, adopting a hospital-based approach, or establishing a dedicated ambulatory care division. The analysis emphasizes the limitations of the current health center model, which relies heavily on categorical programs …

Threads, Irmtraud Reswick May 1979

Threads, Irmtraud Reswick

Theses

The thesis, Threads by Irmtraud Reswick, explores the intricate and culturally significant textile traditions of Tunisia, particularly those of the nomadic tribes and rural communities. These textiles serve as more than just functional items; they are rich expressions of history, identity, and artistry, deeply embedded in the lives of their creators. Using indigenous materials and traditional weaving techniques, Tunisian weavers have crafted textiles that not only provide shelter and protection but also act as records of human connection with nature, society, and spirituality.

The work details the various types of textiles, including rugs, blankets, and shawls, examining their motifs, colors, …

A Study Of The Emotional, Psychological, And Physical Factors Found To Exist In The Environment Of Three Fifth Grade Classrooms, Carolyn A. Timm May 1979

A Study Of The Emotional, Psychological, And Physical Factors Found To Exist In The Environment Of Three Fifth Grade Classrooms, Carolyn A. Timm

Theses

This thesis investigates the emotional, psychological, and physical factors found within three distinct fifth-grade classroom environments. The study aims to observe and interpret the differences and similarities between three specific educational models: the "Traditional Classroom," characterized by teacher-directed instruction and subject mastery; the "Transitional Classroom," which acknowledges student responsibility but remains largely formal and teacher-oriented; and the "Open Classroom," which promotes active student involvement and decision-making. Central to this study is the author's definition of curriculum as a continuous social process that aids student awareness and personal growth, rather than strictly an academic process.

The research methodology utilized a self-designed …

An Individualized Approach To The Teaching Of American Literature, Judith A. Rose May 1979

An Individualized Approach To The Teaching Of American Literature, Judith A. Rose

Theses

Judith A. Rose’s An Individualized Approach to the Teaching of American Literature (1979) explores the effectiveness of individualized instruction in high school American literature classes. The study compares two instructional methods: a traditional, teacher-directed classroom and an individualized learning environment where students negotiate learning contracts, choose activities, and progress at their own pace. The study focuses on a unit centered around To Kill a Mockingbird and evaluates student outcomes in both cognitive and affective domains.

The research finds that students in the individualized classroom showed higher engagement, greater responsibility for their learning, and a small but notable improvement in test …
