A Parameter Identification System For The Human Visual Evoked Response, Robert Kalle Michaels May 1983

A Parameter Identification System For The Human Visual Evoked Response, Robert Kalle Michaels

Theses

The Human Visual Evoked Response (VER) provides a useful tool for analyzing an individual's visual system. However, mere inspection of the signal may not always be the best way to make a diagnosis of the patient. To aid in this diagnosis a parameter identification system has been developed which fits the response to an analog model. The development of the model was based on the results of a survey of previous work in the field. Data were acquired from a data acquisition/processing system developed at the New Jersey University of Medicine and Dentistry and the Eye Institute of New Jersey. …

Organizing To Manage Future Information Technologies, John Patrick Paczkowski

Theses

The area of information technology has undergone dramatic changes over the past ten years, and the rate of change is expected to continue to accelerate through the 1980's and beyond. The newly developing information systems are providing organizations with numerous options for enhancing the quality of managerial decision making, speeding communications and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of administrative/office processes. Unfortnately, many organizations are discovering that they are unable to effectively assimilate and utilize the technology effectively. Chief executives are finding that the traditional structures for managing Data Processing, Telecommunications, and office systems are often fragmented, lack the technical expertise …

Criteria Measurement In Edp Auditing, Eugene Alexander Ottaviano May 1983

Criteria Measurement In Edp Auditing, Eugene Alexander Ottaviano

Theses

Criteria Measurement in EDP Auditing is a planning technique to assist the Internal Audit function in systematically selecting software applications for budgeted audit reviews. The objective is to develop a risk analysis method, which is not time and labor intensive, that will minimize risk to the corporation and maximize audit effectiveness. The methodology does not consider probabilities or occurrence rates because risks to the EDP environment are extremely difficult to forecast with traditional techniques. The method provides for both objective and subjective risk determinations.

The approach is to measure software risk criteria for a specific data processing environment. Risk concerns …

Computer Simulation Of The Human Hypophysial-Ovarian System, Robert Charles Blencowe May 1983

Computer Simulation Of The Human Hypophysial-Ovarian System, Robert Charles Blencowe

Theses

In order to more adequately simulate the human pituitary-ovarian cycle further refinements were made to the original Bogumil and Feng computer models. This involved the inclusion of equations which mathematically describe the peripheral conversion of prehormones and a subroutine showing the effect of plasma proteins, TeBG, CBG, and albumin on the total concentration of estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone and estrone.

Once the models were functioning properly, values for the normal state and for the disease condition, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCO), were obtained. In most cases there exists good agreement between the results reported in the literature and those generated …

Designing Cost Effective Pump Suction Systems Using Statistical Correlation Techniques To Estimate Vessel Elevation Costs, Neil J. Bernstein May 1983

Designing Cost Effective Pump Suction Systems Using Statistical Correlation Techniques To Estimate Vessel Elevation Costs, Neil J. Bernstein

Theses

In order to minimize total costs (investment plus operating costs) when elevating process equipment to meet hydraulic requirements, it is essential to establish cost effective and energy efficient pump suction systems. During the early stages of design of such systems it is most critical that preliminary costs be determined in a timely manner to avoid job delays. One method of accomplishing this is through the use of a cost estimating relationship for defining the price behavior of alternative pump suction systems. This thesis describes the procedure used to develop a mathematical model to predict the cost of elevating vertical drums. …

A Study Of Personal Conflict And Stress Among Engineering Personnel As Influenced By Corporate Policy, Stated And Unstated, Richard Brian Gordon

Theses

The following concepts are being challenged: That organizations are efficient, well-managed, and intelligent: that if one is to believe in any sort of authority, one must first accept the notion that it truly knows best and that it is not only competent, but well-intentioned; that organizations exist for the benefit of their employees and customers; that organizations reward dedication, competence, and performance: that if the organization is to grow it needs loyal sacrificing people; that organizations are dynamic and receptive to change; that if the employee is discouraged, do not worry, for tomorrow will be better; that to be useful …

An Assessment Of Job Attitudes Held By Hourly Workers At A Food Processing Plant, Charles J. Sheahan May 1983

An Assessment Of Job Attitudes Held By Hourly Workers At A Food Processing Plant, Charles J. Sheahan

Theses

This study applied Vroom's instrumentality-valence model to an assessment of the overall job attitude of hourly workers at a food processing plant. The specific job factors relating to the formation of overall job attitude are described and the managerial implications of the results are discussed. A short discussion of the relationship of these employees' attitudes to Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory is also presented.

The results of the study indicate a moderate degree of job satisfaction based on Vroom's model. Additionally, the correlations of specific instrumentality to specific valence give a strong indication that the subjects value rewards they perceive as attainable, …

The Right Mood, Mary Pat O'Brien May 1983

The Right Mood, Mary Pat O'Brien

Theses

Through this supportive documentation of my thesis work, I hope to verbally clarify the intentions mentioned in my proposal. Due to the subjective nature of abstract paintings, it is nearly impossible to conclusively prove a point. By referring to observations made by and about other artists and their work, I have been able to substantiate and complement my own ideas. I found evidence of what I interpreted to be the underlying attitude that is developed individually but shared collectively by artists. It seems this "shared attitude" has no geographic or time boundaries. It is remarkable to note parallels between the …

Emotion As Visual Image, Beth Buvarsky May 1983

Emotion As Visual Image, Beth Buvarsky

Theses

I intend to explore the importance of object and image as symbols that visually express emotion. I am interested in the human condition and the influences and impressions that cause us to see things the way we do. Through the transformation of feelings and forms, I hope to relate emotional responses to situations we find ourselves in. I plan to use holloware techniques within a sculptural format, possibly combined with clay and other materials to achieve these images.

Fabric Constructions, Joanna Dunkin May 1983

Fabric Constructions, Joanna Dunkin

Theses

The artist is not simply a passive reflector of his or her world, but a dynamic creator of it. I have tried to expand and enrich my experience rather than merely duplicate it. The world I create is of planes, volumes, spatial sequences, and some familiar architectural elements such as stairs and boxes. By using the above mentioned elements, a number of interlocking and highly ordered spatial relation ships have resulted. An interlocking spatial relationship consists of two spaces whose fields overlap to form a zone of shared space. When two spaces interlock their volumes in this manner, each retains …

Anagenesis: Rebirth Of A School Into A Residential Facility, Susan Michel

Theses

Although it may appear that this thesis represents a narrowly defined project with respect to the building, the type of resident and the time in which it is occupied, in reality, its associations go in two directions. The thesis reaches back to historical and intellectual precedents, while at the same time lays a fertile ground for related work in the future. The following documents establish the goals and organization of the thesis and in doing so, become the introduction.

A Performance Evaluation Of Rounded And Backed Books Vs. Square Backed Books, David Harlan Parisi May 1983

A Performance Evaluation Of Rounded And Backed Books Vs. Square Backed Books, David Harlan Parisi

Theses

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the performance of rounded and backed books against books left square backed. The variables which are introduced into the study will enable the results to provide needed information on the performance of the many different binding constructions librarians and library binders are confronted with. Rounding and backing is an optional operation when binding a book, an operation which is sometimes by-passed on smaller books. A book that is not rounded and backed is square backed. It is suspected that rounding and backing a book will indeed enhance its performance and durability, therefore …

A Science Curriculum Incorporating Process Skill Activities Into Content-Oriented Science Programs, Holly Richards May 1983

A Science Curriculum Incorporating Process Skill Activities Into Content-Oriented Science Programs, Holly Richards

Theses

This curriculum of science activities was developed to be used with a content-oriented text in the intermediate grades of elementary school. It was specifically designed to give students additional practice in using the process skills in the various units of science, The author felt the need for this curriculum after teaching both content- and process-oriented programs, as each left much to be desired when taught in isolation.

This researcher believes that children learn best by doing, and that science is an ideal area in which to develop the skills that produce independent learners and critical thinkers. However, as research shows, …

An Application Of Multi-Dimensional Scaling To The Re-Examination Of Preferred Tone Reproduction, David J. Porter May 1983

An Application Of Multi-Dimensional Scaling To The Re-Examination Of Preferred Tone Reproduction, David J. Porter

Theses

Black and white prints were produced of several scenes that varied in both negative contrast and negative exposure. Subjects rated the various prints by categories based on their own personal understanding of what an excellent print was. The boundaries of the categories were found and used to determine the preferred tone reproduction characteristics. Individual differences were also scaled with the use of a proximity measure determined from the categorical data. The preferred contrast (1.46 +0.24) was significantly higher than the contrast that has been found to be preferred in earlier studies. The application of this study to more general situations …

Intimations, Scot Bennett May 1983

Intimations, Scot Bennett

Theses

The concentration in this thesis will not necessarily focus on the print as an isolated wholistic art-form, but rather present the print as an intrinsic part of some other whole . Practically the purpose will be to manually and visually transport the viewer from a present environment to another; one in which he may hopefully identify. The works will be multi-media ones inclusive of and related to the techniques of printmaking (intaglio and lithography) .
