Perceived Empathy In Self-Help Books, Jerome M. Spector
Perceived Empathy In Self-Help Books, Jerome M. Spector
Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether written self-help materials conveyed empathy and whether reader's perceptions of empathy could be measured. Subjects (N = 65) were asked to rate 6 passages from 3 books on 2 questions derived from Rogers' (1961) restatement rule, and make a hypothetical choice among the authors as therapists. Using paired sample t tests, it was found that the mean differences in the ratings in 9 out of 12 cases were significant. One choice of therapist outcome out of the 2 was significant, x2 (2, N = 55) = 37.673, p < 0.001. It was concluded that the results supported theories that empathy, as a pluralistic concept, was inherent in written materials, and could be measured.
Consequences Of Using Fear As A Motivator And Its Effects On The Employer / Employee Relationship, Nicole M. Griggs
Consequences Of Using Fear As A Motivator And Its Effects On The Employer / Employee Relationship, Nicole M. Griggs
Theses
The following work is an in-depth analysis of the consequences of using fear as a motivator, specifically, in the workplace, and the effects fear has on employees. The empirical research identifies the successful, and often, unsuccessful components of the employer/employee relationship. For many, using fear would seem to be a powerful way of getting employees to produce more, work harder, increasing motivation. This is not always the answer. The study provides reasons why fear can be a negative motivator and detrimental to an organization.

Relationship Between A Therapist's Locus Of Control, Therapeutic Orientation, And Directiveness Of Therapeutic Communication, Amy Suzanne Lammers
Theses
The importance of matching the client and the therapist on certain variables has been stressed by researchers as being an important part of the therapeutic process. This study examines the relationship between the locus of control of the therapist, the theoretical orientation of the therapist, and the directiveness of therapeutic communications. Subjects for this study were 82 Professional Counselors Licensed in the state of Missouri. In addition to demographic data sheets, …

User-Responsivity And Environment-Sensitivity Consideration For State-Funded Housing In Alain City, Nassra Saif Al Daheri
User-Responsivity And Environment-Sensitivity Consideration For State-Funded Housing In Alain City, Nassra Saif Al Daheri
Theses
Massive housing projects have shown that prospective users are rarely given the opportunity to participate in the design decisions. Subsequently, such schemes commonly fail to accommodate all their needs. In the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the housing projects that aim at resettling of Bedouin into newly developed urban communities are state-funded. Many of these houses that were built in the late seventies and early eighties were transferred back to the state (in a very bad condition due to the users random modifications and additions) in exchange of newer better houses. The lack of an adaptive design concept that can accommodate …

Theses
The current study used questionnaires in order to survey a sample of rural high school students regarding their self-esteem, attitudes toward acculturation, and their sense of ethnic identity. Students' ratings of self-esteem were not related to their sense of ethnic or racial identity nor their generational status, or how far removed they are from their cultural background. However, when acculturation attitudes were examined, the results were somewhat unexpected. The students who endorsed integration, or the idea that immigrants should both maintain their cultural traditions and try to adapt to their new culture, reported higher levels of self-esteem and identified themselves …

Formulating A Service Recovery Package For The Airline Industry In Taiwan, Yung-Shine Yang
Theses
Stated simply, the service sector is an industry with respect to human being. Nearly each service transaction must be involved with people, including both consumers and frontline employees. This means that in a service firm, customers as well as frontline employees should be regarded as the most invaluable assets. Unfortunately, in Taiwan nowadays numerous service organizations such as certain airlines always lay special emphasis on stockholders' interests instead of clients' benefits. Maybe this can help explain why some service busine e has the inability to do th1ngs right the second time while they sometimes do things wrong the first time. …

Development And Field Testing Of Pulse Introduction Membrane Extraction (Pime) For Measurement Of Ground Water Contamination, Anthony San Juan
Development And Field Testing Of Pulse Introduction Membrane Extraction (Pime) For Measurement Of Ground Water Contamination, Anthony San Juan
Theses
VOCs are a class of aromatic and aliphatic compounds with a variety of functional groups, and are in general detrimental to human health even at trace levels. Conventional analysis of VOCs in groundwater usually involves sampling at site followed by laboratory analysis. This results in long turn around times, high cost and also errors associated with sample preservation during transportation and storage. In order to address these problems, a field portable instrument referred to as Pulse Introduction Membrane Extraction (PIME) has been developed for monitoring trace level halogenated organic contaminants in ground water. A membrane extraction approach has been used, …

Teacher Attitudes Toward Students With Disabilities In Their Classroom, Karly Sokolowski
Teacher Attitudes Toward Students With Disabilities In Their Classroom, Karly Sokolowski
Theses
This study surveyed attitudes of general elementary classroom teachers toward students with disabilities who were educated in the general education classroom. The Opinions Relative to the Integration of Students with Disabilities (ORI) scale, revised by Antonak and Larrivee (1995), was used to assess teacher attitudes. The 6-point Likert-like rating scale was administered to 48 educators in a large, suburban school district in New York State. A Cronbach coefficient alpha, conducted from teacher responses, indicated a reliability coefficient of 0.92. The proposed four factor multidimensional structure of the ORI was supported in this study. The four subscales included: (a) Benefits of …
