As I Live And Breathe, Jessica Fitzgerald May 2026

As I Live And Breathe, Jessica Fitzgerald

Theses

This thesis employs the unique materiality of glass as a means of investigating interconnection and worth. Through glass, I explore the value of attention, and how directing it informs a sense of what matters. By allowing the fundamental forces of heat and gravity to lead the work, I explore connection, and the hidden ways in which Process influences Piece. The particular malleability of warm glass enables me to capture moments of making. It is the lens through which I focus my investigations, highlighting phenomena in process as the evidence of its creation.

Understanding Communication In Green Infrastructure Project Teams In Rochester Ny Region: Coordination, Negotiation, And Constraints, Hayden Berner

Theses

This study explores how communication is perceived and used within multidisciplinary green infrastructure (GI) project teams. As GI continues to grow in the United States, projects increasingly rely on collaboration between professionals from different fields, making communication a critical factor in project success. Using a qualitative research approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals working on GI projects in the Greater Rochester, New York region. The data were analyzed using an inductive, grounded theory approach to identify key themes related to communication practices, challenges, and outcomes. Results show that communication is not just a tool for sharing information, but a …

Unfixed Bodies, Soph Shufelt May 2026

Unfixed Bodies, Soph Shufelt

Theses

This thesis emerges from that tension between protest and living.  It considers what it means to have one’s existence continually framed as resistance, and how that condition reshapes embodiment, temporality, and identity.  By situating my lived experience within broader social and political structures, I examine how bodily autonomy functions not only as a personal necessity, but as a regulated site of power.  The work that follows investigates how queer and transgender bodies navigate visibility and risk, how time is warped through prolonged struggle, and how survival becomes a form of authorship.

Neuroarchitecture: Color Psychology And Its Impact On The Built Environment, Jean Morgan May 2026

Neuroarchitecture: Color Psychology And Its Impact On The Built Environment, Jean Morgan

Theses

Neuroarchitecture merges neuroscience and architecture, examining how built environments affect our emotions, behaviors, and overall well-being. One of the principles of this interdisciplinary topic focuses on Color psychology, which explores the profound influence of colors on human emotions, behaviors, and cognitive responses. In the built environment, the strategic use of color extends beyond aesthetics, shaping user experiences, functionality, and psychological well-being. This thesis explores the interplay between color psychology and architectural design, highlighting how color choices influence mood, productivity, and social interactions within spaces. The main focus will examine the relationship between colors and equal causation in psychological effects. The …

She Absorbs, Jamie Westermeyer May 2026

She Absorbs, Jamie Westermeyer

Theses

Drawing from lived experience, this thesis investigates the ways sensitivity, attentiveness, and emotional labor are cultivated over time, specifically within gendered environments that reward endurance and self-containment. The figures in this work exist within moments of tension—straining, compressing, and distorting under pressures that are often invisible yet deeply felt. This work focuses on endurance—how individuals adapt, absorb, and negotiate expectations placed upon them. My figures operate as both personal and collective bodies, embodying experiences that extend beyond being autobiographical. Moments of physical distortion and emotional discomfort coexist within the sculptures, allowing vulnerability and critique to appear simultaneously. Ultimately, the sculptures …

Designing The Spaces In Between: How Transitional Spaces In Elementary Schools Shape Clarity, Well-Being, And Belonging, Cristin Witcher Siegel May 2026

Designing The Spaces In Between: How Transitional Spaces In Elementary Schools Shape Clarity, Well-Being, And Belonging, Cristin Witcher Siegel

Theses

This thesis investigates the role of transitional spaces in elementary schools and their impact on students’ experiences of clarity, well-being, and belonging. While educational design often prioritizes classrooms as primary sites of learning, this study argues that the spaces between them, including corridors, stairwells, and entry zones, play a critical role in shaping daily experience and supporting student development. Using a comparative case study methodology, three elementary schools in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago were analyzed, each representing a distinct architectural era and educational philosophy: Crow Island School (1939), Wilmette Junior High School (1958), and Sunset Ridge School (2018). …

Complexity And Usability Of Digital Healthcare, Theresa Haas May 2026

Complexity And Usability Of Digital Healthcare, Theresa Haas

Theses

Digital services, ranging from online shopping and banking to government services and healthcare, are rapidly taking over human-provided services. The accessibility and usability of such digital services may not allow older adults to make use of them, making automation a barrier to access societal services. This is especially critical with many healthcare-related services and apps. This research is framed around two interrelated constructs, task complexity and individual complexity, the latter influenced by cognitive decline in older users. The experiment has three representative tasks of different task complexity and the measure of individual complexity which is understood through previous knowledge of …

Abigail Sarai: A Neuroaesthetic Approach To Fashion Brand Development, Abby Martos May 2026

Abigail Sarai: A Neuroaesthetic Approach To Fashion Brand Development, Abby Martos

Theses

This thesis project presents a comprehensive direct-to-consumer business plan for an independent women’s fashion brand, Abigail Sarai, strategically positioned around the commercial value of aesthetic design. The project is grounded in an interdisciplinary theoretical framework integrating neuroaesthetics and consumer behavior research. Existing literature demonstrates that visual principles such as symmetry, harmony, and proportion activate neural reward systems associated with pleasure, while consumer research identifies happiness and emotional well-being as central drivers of purchasing behavior. Building upon these findings, this project proposes that aesthetic beauty can function as a deliberate and measurable value proposition within fashion entrepreneurship. By aligning brand design …

I Wrote Myself Awake: A Personal Encounter With A/R/Tography, Michelle Geipel May 2026

I Wrote Myself Awake: A Personal Encounter With A/R/Tography, Michelle Geipel

Theses

This project and its accompanying short story function as visual and narrative representations of a/r/tography, demonstrating how creative practice can be used to explore and construct personal meaning through writing and art-making. The co-written story exists alongside the altered book as evidence of how the creative process not only engages the brain through neuroplasticity, but also supports meaning-making and the formation or discovery of identity. Through the integration of life writing, visual art, and reflective inquiry, this work illustrates how understanding can emerge from within the act of creation itself.

User-Centered Design For Public Financial Services: A Federal Student Loan Management App Case Study, Carmen River Christopher May 2026

User-Centered Design For Public Financial Services: A Federal Student Loan Management App Case Study, Carmen River Christopher

Theses

Researchers have studied several facets of federal student loans, such as the impacts it has on borrowers’ finances, mentality, and life goals, plus the history of the federal student system and potential changes. There has been little research conducted on how borrowers make decisions regarding repayment, including choosing plans, navigating the repayment system, and understanding the long term implications of their choices. Since this research largely does not exist, there are few tools and resources to help guide borrowers as they manage the large, complex, and dynamic landscape that is navigating the federal loan system and repaying their debt. I …

Anastasis: Slow Fashion, Barbara Bultman May 2026

Anastasis: Slow Fashion, Barbara Bultman

Theses

This thesis explores how slow fashion principles contribute to the longevity and cultural significance of iconic garments. Using qualitative research methods, including historical analysis, literature review, and practice-based design research, this project analyzes and recreates six iconic garments: the little black dress, trench coat, wrap dress, shift dress, wide-leg trouser, and women’s suit. The research investigates couture-level construction techniques, sustainable materials, and timeless silhouettes, demonstrating how these strategies can extend garment lifespan and foster emotional attachment between consumers and clothing. Ultimately, the research concludes that slow fashion provides a practical framework for creating durable, meaningful garments that support both environmental …

The Judicial Subjectivity In The Fair Use Analysis Of Andy Warhol Foundation For The Visual Arts, Inc. V. Goldsmith And Its Implications, Donna Khademi May 2026

The Judicial Subjectivity In The Fair Use Analysis Of Andy Warhol Foundation For The Visual Arts, Inc. V. Goldsmith And Its Implications, Donna Khademi

Theses

The case of Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith demonstrates the subjective nature of the fair use doctrine. Scholars suggest that judges are often forced to interpret expressive works without specialized training in art, leading to inconsistent rulings. These discrepancies can lead to legal ambiguity and potentially weaken First Amendment protections. A deeper understanding of authorship, appropriation, and contemporary art highlights their crucial role in evaluating expressive works. By examining current legislation and judicial precedents, this paper shows the subjective and inconsistent nature of the present legal framework and offers a set of related proposals. It …

Staging Collapse: Anita Berber’S Cocaine And Morphium As Disability Aesthetic Performance, Blair Summers May 2026

Staging Collapse: Anita Berber’S Cocaine And Morphium As Disability Aesthetic Performance, Blair Summers

Theses

This thesis examines Anita Berber’s performances Cocaine and Morphium within the cultural climate of Weimar Germany, where the body became closely tied to ideals of health, productivity, and national renewal. Through the framework of disability aesthetics as defined by Tobin Siebers, this study argues that Berber transforms addiction, collapse, and bodily decay into a visual and affective language of artistic and political critique. Rather than present the body as disciplined or morally ideal, Berber stages instability, excess, and death through gesture, costume, set design, and music. In doing so, she reimagines the stigmatized female body as a site of agency …

Analyzing Comparisons Of Seascapes By Caspar David Friedrich And Fitz Henry Lane Through A Digital Gallery Show, Adrianna Murphy May 2026

Analyzing Comparisons Of Seascapes By Caspar David Friedrich And Fitz Henry Lane Through A Digital Gallery Show, Adrianna Murphy

Theses

This project focuses on a comparative digital exhibition and analysis between Caspar David Friedrich and Fitz Henry Lane’s seascape artwork. Both artists have not been shown together in a gallery; thus this research into common themes in their works reveals a new perspective on early- to mid-19th-century seascape art. This perspective shows how their different geographies and historical contexts converge through the shared visual language of contemplation, morality, and reflecting in the mystery of life through nature. The project aims to create a digital gallery that showcases an ideal layout and a comparison of the artists, with curated works that …

Integrating Artificial Intelligence Into Academic Writing: Development Of A Student-Centered Ethical Toolkit, Matteo Landais May 2026

Integrating Artificial Intelligence Into Academic Writing: Development Of A Student-Centered Ethical Toolkit, Matteo Landais

Theses

The rapid growth of generative artificial intelligence in higher education has introduced new challenges surrounding authorship, academic integrity, and the role of writing in student learning. While institutional responses have often focused on restriction, surveillance, and AI detection, students continue to incorporate AI tools into their writing practices in increasingly normalized ways. This project argues that the issue is not simply whether students use AI, but how they use it and whether that use supports meaningful engagement with the writing process.

This applied project proposes a process-oriented and student-centered framework for the ethical integration of AI into academic writing. Learning …

Edvard Munch And The Feminine Sublime, Saralyn Goodspeed May 2026

Edvard Munch And The Feminine Sublime, Saralyn Goodspeed

Theses

This paper explores the theory of the sublime in relation to Edvard Munch’s depictions of women. Departing from the common view that Munch was simply anxious about the “New Woman” that emerged in the late nineteenth-century, I argue that Munch’s conflicting emotions regarding women were sublime in nature, rooted in his childhood relationship with his mother. A formal analysis is conducted on three of Munch’s works: Inheritance (1897), Three Stages of Woman or Sphinx (1894), and Madonna (1895). These analyses link Munch’s representations of women to a maternal sublime.

Loosie: A Nesting Furniture Collection, Maurice Bryan May 2026

A persistent challenge in housing design is the efficient use of limited space, particularly in densely populated urban environments, where residents balance comfort with the need to minimize clutter and spatial constraints. This study investigates strategies for optimizing interior space through space-saving methods, using multifunctional furniture design. The primary objective is to develop multipurpose design solutions that enable users to express personal style while maximizing spatial efficiency, with a focus on approaches that emphasize multifunctionality and transformability. These strategies enable residents to use living spaces more efficiently, accommodate a broader range of activities, overcome clutter and spatial constraints, express individual …

Traumatic Stress Recruits An Excitatory Orbitofrontal-Amygdala Pathway To Drive Maladaptive Aggression, Mikaela Aholt May 2026

Traumatic Stress Recruits An Excitatory Orbitofrontal-Amygdala Pathway To Drive Maladaptive Aggression, Mikaela Aholt

Theses

Traumatic stress is a reliable predictor of heightened aggression, yet the mechanisms linking stress exposure to aggression remain poorly understood. The Nordman lab previously found that traumatic stress activates the posterior ventral segment of the medial amygdala (MeApv) to drive persistent increases in aggressive behavior. However, why traumatic stress would engage an aggression-promoting pathway is unclear. To address this, the inputs to the MeApv were mapped and a population of excitatory, but not inhibitory, neurons in layer 5 of the medial orbitofrontal cortex (mOFC) were identified. The OFC is classically viewed as an inhibitory brake on amygdala-driven impulses, yet emerging …

Yes, I Think So?, Madeeha Ahmad May 2026

Yes, I Think So?, Madeeha Ahmad

Theses

Yes, I Think So? is a body of work that explores memory as something unstable and alterable by emotion, time, and lived experience. Influenced by my experience with epilepsy, the show meditates on how dreams, seizures, and waking life can blur together, fracturing a sense of consistency and continuity. Rather than thinking of memory as a definitive record of the past, I encounter it as a process of reconstruction. Wood serves as both a material and a metaphor. It records time visibly with its growth yet remains unpredictable in its resistance to complete control. Indigo dye moves the work farther …

Like A Rolling Lychee, George Meng May 2026

Like A Rolling Lychee, George Meng

Theses

I grew up in Shanghai, China—a megacity with over 25 million people. I was privileged enough to avoid the grueling fate of taking the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao). At 16, I moved to Sewanee, a small college town in rural Appalachia with a population of only 3,000. Overshadowed by that curiosity was the collision of two worlds and my sense of belonging and identity. I wasn’t fully aware of how I watched and copied others’ behaviors and mannerisms to blend in as an adolescent. Being a minority in the middle of nowhere Tennessee meant I was conditioned into fitting …

Representative And Preferred Skin Color Rendition Of Photos And Avatars In Optical-See Through Augmented Reality, Dara Dimoff May 2026

Representative And Preferred Skin Color Rendition Of Photos And Avatars In Optical-See Through Augmented Reality, Dara Dimoff

Theses

Human skin color is embedded with information about mood, health, and age. While facial color is widely studied in dermatology and cosmetics, there is limited data available to map the subjective experience of skin color to measured data. The ability to derive the color that best represents a person’s skin would be valuable in a wide range of applications, from identifying an appropriate makeup foundation to achieving white balance in a video. When displaying skin tones, it is well-known that preferred renderings are different from accurate renderings. Rendering skin tones becomes more nuanced with complex rendering technologies such as augmented …

Quantifying Exterior Ecological Performance In Biomimicry, Bioclimatic, And Biophilic Architecture: A Comparative Framework Across Climatic Zones, Ruqayyah Siamwala May 2026

Quantifying Exterior Ecological Performance In Biomimicry, Bioclimatic, And Biophilic Architecture: A Comparative Framework Across Climatic Zones, Ruqayyah Siamwala

Theses

Historically, sustainability research in architecture has focused on interior comfort and operational energy efficiency, leaving the ecological performance of the immediate building façade relatively unexplored. By creating a comparison framework to assess the performance of biomimetic, bioclimatic, and biophilic architecture under external ecological conditions across four climatic zones—hot-humid, cold-humid, hot-dry, and cold-dry—this thesis closes that gap. Using quantitative data such as NDVI, land surface temperature, PM2.5, NO2, infiltration rates, and species count in addition to qualitative analysis of these three architectural strategies at the building-site interface, twelve case studies are evaluated against four ecological indicator groups: air quality, soil quality, …

Optimizing Product Placement Using Purchase Pattern Analysis, Mohra Shamaa May 2026

Optimizing Product Placement Using Purchase Pattern Analysis, Mohra Shamaa

Theses

Retail product placement has traditionally relied on static shelf layouts and techniques such as market basket analysis, often guided by managerial intuition and category based organization. However, such approaches frequently overlook the complexity of consumer purchasing behavior as reflected in the transactional data, and this study investigates how data driven analysis of purchase relationships can inform more effective product placement strategies in physical retail environments. Unlike the sequential models, this study focuses on co occurrence relationships due to dataset constraints, prioritizing interpretability for retail applications. Using transaction level data from the Instacart dataset, this research applies association rule mining through …

Assessing Programmatic Gaps In The Community Engagement To Reduce Victimization (Cerv) Program, Sam Marino May 2026

These improvements will strengthen the program overall, helping to reduce community violence throughout Rochester. Across three working papers, the project begins by examining the current data and analyses on the program and develops a detailed logic …

This Moon In Your Throat, Hankyung Ryu, May 2026

This Moon In Your Throat, Hankyung Ryu,

Theses

This Moon in Your Throat examines the concept of Han, a haunted and inherited Korean affect that moves across bodies, generations, and diasporic life. Rather than treating Han as a fixed emotion, this thesis understands it as a lasting force shaped by historical trauma, family memory, and the unfinished effects of colonialism, war, capitalism, and displacement. Drawing on hauntology, the project asks how the past remains present through sensation, habit, bodily tension, and emotional atmosphere, especially in the lives of Koreans living in the United States. Night serves as the project’s spatial, temporal, and emotional ground, a setting in which …

Subject. Object. Thing., Cristin Hand May 2026

Subject. Object. Thing., Cristin Hand

Theses

Subject. Object. Thing. is part of an accumulating record of self-construction and self-reflection. The work considers the complications of visibility through self-portraiture, how the desire to be seen exists alongside the impulse to withhold, obscure, and substitute. Working across photography, performance, collage, and sculptural constructions made for the camera, I fragment, disassemble, and reconfigure my body as photographic subject and material. This exploration is structured around a series of oppositions; concealment/exposure, anonymity/specificity, subject/object, naked/nude, and destruction/reconstruction. I do not attempt to resolve these oppositions. Instead, I consider where these categories blur, contradict themselves, and become unstable. Central to this inquiry …

From There To There, Daniil Kolchanov May 2026

From There To There, Daniil Kolchanov

Theses

From There to There is a semi-fictional journey, an attempt to figure out what home is, that uses photography as the main medium. It started with the physical act of leaving my country, but quickly turned into an internal journey. In this project, I am interested in themes of displacement, lack of belonging, and home as a utopian idea. Combining different ideas of home, metaphors, symbols and everyday moments, I talk about an idealized home, ideas of stability, connection, and a sense of belonging in an ever-changing environment. From There to There questions the internal relationship between identity, memory, community, …

Tom: Toward A Design Language For Object Personality, Mike Minerva May 2026

Tom: Toward A Design Language For Object Personality, Mike Minerva

Theses

Design has been chasing seamless efficiency for decades, creating smoother interactions, more compliant objects, and experiences that disappear entirely. When an object is frictionless, it does not lack personality. It has a personality. One that is obedient, meaningless, and remarkably boring. An object that pushes back has boundaries, and that resistance comes from a position of caring. Objects have always been able to refuse. What is new is that the refusal can now come from inside the object, from memory, adaptive thinking and a disposition toward the person using it. Expressed consistently over time, that agency is perceived as personality. …

Migration Of The Spirit, Yaqub Shabazz May 2026

Migration Of The Spirit, Yaqub Shabazz

Theses

Migration of the Spirit examines interior transition through sustained painting practice. While migration is often understood as geographic displacement, this thesis reframes it as an interior reorientation shaped by halted time, disciplined solitude, and the act of reclaiming one’s own narrative. Grounded in lived experience within institutional systems and sustained decades of teaching and studio practice, the work reflects a movement from externally imposed narratives toward self-authored clarity. The paintings are marked by architectural compression, repeated motifs, and restrained palettes dominated by sienna, umber, and muted blues. Figures emerge within densely structured spatial fields shaped by assertive linear frameworks that …
