How Parent's Concerns Relate To Their Children's Social Competence, Vikki Negron
How Parent's Concerns Relate To Their Children's Social Competence, Vikki Negron
Theses
Social competence in children is correlated to their success in interacting with adults and peers throughout their life (McCabe, 1998). Social incompetence is associated with peer rejection, poor academic performance, grade retention, juvenile delinquency, school drop-out, and substance abuse (Ladd & Asher, 1990; McCabe, 1998; Ramsey & Ramsey, 1992). This study investigated the relationship between parental concerns about future expectations, child development, parent-child interaction, discipline and social competence in urban preschoolers 2.9-4.8 years of age who attended the Rochester Preschool Parent Program (RPPP). The Parental Questionnaire was used to measure parental concerns (PMHP, 1998). Social competence was measured by parent …

Decision Making Based On Quantitative And Qualitative Evaluations, Rohan A. Pandit
Theses
This study emphasizes mainly on the influence of evaluations, both qualitative and quantitative, on decision making for many occasions that occur in business and technically oriented settings. Decisions made with a certain fuzzy as wen as technical behavior are structured by means of computer-assisted decision-making tools. Decision support tools assist decision makers in making crucial decisions. For instance the tool that has been designed for the purpose of this research will be used for selecting capital-intensive products. It is also intended to prove that with the help of decision support systems decision makers could make decisions by reducing fuzzy decision …
A Novel Approach Towards Usability Studies For Visual Search Tasks In Graphical User Interface Applications Using The Activity Theory Approach, Tirthankar Sengupta
A Novel Approach Towards Usability Studies For Visual Search Tasks In Graphical User Interface Applications Using The Activity Theory Approach, Tirthankar Sengupta
Theses
The field of Human Computer Interaction still strives for a generalized model of visual search tasks (icon search, menu search, text search, label search, search through hypertext and feature recognition). The existing models of visual search, in spite of being impressive, are limited under certain perspectives due to lack of generality. The thesis tries to provide a holistic approach for the modeling of visual search tasks in graphical user interfaces from the Activity Theory (AT) perspective with the aim of rendering a theoretical bridge between HCI and Psychology. A detailed review of literature from the variegated discipline contributing to the …
Career Decision Making In Learning Disabled/ Gifted High School Students, Kristin Belknap
Career Decision Making In Learning Disabled/ Gifted High School Students, Kristin Belknap
Theses
Little is known about the career decision-making difficulties faced by high school students who are both gifted and learning disabled. Learning disabled/ gifted individuals have a learning disability in one or more areas, yet demonstrate extraordinary strengths in other areas. This study examined how this unique set of abilities affects an individual's career decision-making process, using the Career Decision Scale (Osipow, 1980) and the Career Thoughts Inventory (Sampson, Peterson, Lenz, Reardon, Saunders, 1994). Eleven high school students participated in the study. There was a high degree of variability among the scores, most likely due to the unique characteristics of each …

Graphic Design & Ubiquitous Graphic User Interfaces; The Third Wave Of Computing, Frank Marino
Theses
Graphic design is an integral component of user interface design. Ubiquitous computing is the a form of computing that is "everywhere all the time" through technology advances in hardware, software, and communication networks. Consumers are able to retrieve and send information whenever a task needs to be completed. Graphic design is part of the visual mechanism through which people interact with devices. The visual interactive components of these devices are the part of computing systems that are addressed in this project. This thesis addresses the problems that arise when people need to interact with several devices at a given time. …
Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding
Visual Syntax And Intelligence, Tanya Harding
Theses
This thesis project is concerned with the role that graphic designers have in making learning materials more effective. It is focused on the need for instructional materials to reflect current advances in cognitive psychology and our society's definition of intelligence. Most instructional materials today are outdated and ineffective. Some reasons are political, others are socio-economic, and some fall within the scope of the designed environment. Learning materials, especially textbooks, designed before the 1980's have been designed without standards, and at a time when intelligence was seen as a narrow list of abilities.
Creating The Consumer: Credit Cards & The Role Of Design & Advertising, Yasmin Jung
Creating The Consumer: Credit Cards & The Role Of Design & Advertising, Yasmin Jung
Theses
The ideas and messages we as image makers communicate have a potential to reach millions of people, and as professionals we need to be aware of both the positive and negative consequences of the work we do. What are we as designers, photographers, and other creative professionals contributing with our work? Are we educating, informing, or simply manipulating? Ideally, ethics, education, and a certain sense of responsibility are integrated into each of our endeavors, but those things are often neglected for the sake of personal gain and prestige, and the goals of a client. Everyday, no matter where we turn, …

An Examination Of Discourse Concerned With Pcb Remediation In The Hudson River, Jennifer M. Coffey
An Examination Of Discourse Concerned With Pcb Remediation In The Hudson River, Jennifer M. Coffey
Theses
Remediation of PCB contamination in the Hudson River is an issue hotly contested within local communities, the media, and between government agencies and corporate entities. In recent years, the EPA has decided to revisit their 1984 no-action decision for the Hudson River and in December 2000, issued a Feasibility Study recommending partial dredging of the 200 miles of the Hudson floor deemed a Superfund site. The EPA's reevaluation of their 1984 decision has spurred an enormous amount of literature from corporate, non-profit volunteer, and government agencies.
The rhetorical theory of social constructionism and the ethical theory of environmental pragmatism are …

Effects Of Cold Stress On Worker Performance In A Refrigerated Warehouse, Margarita Chernyshov
Theses
The effects of cold stress were evaluated on worker performance in a low temperature environment. Level of clothing protection was compared to the functional ability of working on various tasks. Physical as well as mental effects were discussed to develop a basis for the physiological adaptations due to cold stress. The study focused on workers that performed various simple and complex tasks in a refrigerated warehouse with a temperature range 32° - 40°F. Surveys were distributed to employees who presently and previously worked in this refrigerated area. The "Picker" and "Feeder" tasks were analyzed as they pertain to this low …
Using Human Observers' Eye Movements In Automatic Image Classifiers, Timothy Grabowski
Using Human Observers' Eye Movements In Automatic Image Classifiers, Timothy Grabowski
Theses
This research thesis explored the way in which people look at images in different semantic categories (e.g., handshake versus not-handshake), and directly related those results to computational approaches for automatic image classification. Although many eye tracking experiments have been performed, to our knowledge, this was the first study that specifically compares eye movements across categories, and that links category-specific eye tracking results to automatic image classification techniques. The hypothesis was that the eye movements of human observers for images in different semantic classes differ (e.g., handshakes, others), and that this information can be effectively used in automatic techniques. We presented …
Understanding One Another: Application Of Individual And Generational Behavior In The Organizational Environment, Nicole L. Brueggeman
Understanding One Another: Application Of Individual And Generational Behavior In The Organizational Environment, Nicole L. Brueggeman
Theses
The co-mingling effect of individuals and generations has a profound impact on organizational behavior. This study focuses on the behavior of individuals and generations in the organizational environment.
Organizations as social systems could not exist without people. This creates a complex problem, bow to deal with the diverse population that occupies the organizational environment. The interaction between an individual and a generational cohort group provides an exchange point for behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes. Research shows that each cohort grouping shapes behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes based on their exposure to events and social interactions. Behavioral Science describes bow these interactions provide …

The Renewal Of Insight: Exhibition Of Painting And Calligraphy, Chu Chen-Nan
The Renewal Of Insight: Exhibition Of Painting And Calligraphy, Chu Chen-Nan
Theses
The thesis, The Renewal of Insight: Exhibition of Painting and Calligraphy by Chu Chen-Nan, explores the intimate relationship between Chinese painting and calligraphy, emphasizing their shared origins and intertwined development. Chu Chen-Nan reflects on how Chinese calligraphy, with its expressive use of brush and ink, plays a crucial role in both artistic creation and the appreciation of visual arts. Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese masters, Chu aligns his work with the idea that both painting and calligraphy emphasize qualities like structure, speed, and dignity, rather than solely focusing on representational accuracy.
Throughout the thesis, Chu explores the contrast and …
The Correlation Between Family Adaptability Scores And Adolescent Incarceration, Katherine P. Richard
The Correlation Between Family Adaptability Scores And Adolescent Incarceration, Katherine P. Richard
Theses
Adolescent crimes continue to climb in number and level of violence despite efforts to curtail them. Little research has been done on the impact of family interaction styles on adolescent crime. This study attempts to confirm or disconfirm the hypothesis that adolescents who are incarcerated are more likely to score their families as having a rigid family interaction style based on the FACES III adaptability scale than adolescents who are not incarcerated. The family adaptability scores of approximately 50 adolescents in a midwestern lock down facility were compared to those of approximately 50 students selected from a midwestern church and …

A Journey Into Self-Actualization, William Rubar
Theses
The MFA Thesis Exhibition is a presentation of ceramic sculpture. The theme for this body of work is a self-portrait that uses text as an integral part of the composition. The medium is clay, which interacts with the two-dimensional and three-dimensional properties of space. Therefore, it is my goal to establish a union with these dimensional properties. My tablet paintings serve to catalog significant events affecting both our culture and my life, resulting in a self-portrait. These paintings create a dialogue between the emotion of language, passage of time and the properties of space. The preparation of the clay and …
