Comparing Work Values Of Students Within The General Education System To Those Of Students Within The Special Education System: A Review Of The Differences, Erin J. Brown May 2010

Comparing Work Values Of Students Within The General Education System To Those Of Students Within The Special Education System: A Review Of The Differences, Erin J. Brown

Theses

Work values are essential to study as these ideals directly influence subsequent career satisfaction. As a result, it is important to examine the constructs that may influence work values. This study addressed the differences in work value development as a result of the curriculum taken in high school. More specifically, it examined the work values of students enrolled in the special education curriculum and compared them to the work values of those in the general educational curriculum. Descriptive statistics, Independent Two Sample T-tests, and a Pearson Product Moment Correlation were run on archival data to compare means and examine the …

Deaf Cuban-American Male Making Art, Jeremy Quiroga May 2010

Deaf Cuban-American Male Making Art, Jeremy Quiroga

Theses

I am an artist who harvests from nature and the industrial remains of humans. As in Esiaks: "The dust shall return to earth as it was." Before becoming dust I hope to give the remains a new life. Breathing a new life into visual language is the opportunity to be shamanic which is a welcoming thought. Shamans are known as people who understand their culture and community well and respond to it by using symbols and meanings. They are also known as intermediaries between human and spirit world, people like Beuys, Kandinsky, Smithson, Rauschenberg and Duchamp themselves are known shamanic …

Wink ; ), Annalisa Iannone May 2010

Wink ; ), Annalisa Iannone

Theses

If you were a member of the Match.com community in 2005, you expressed interest in another member by sending them a "wink." If someone online reciprocated interest, they also had the option to "wink" at you. In Match.com parlance, "winking" online established personal connections similar to those achieved in the real world--a wink is a facial gesture used to communicate or connect with another person. My thesis, entitled Wink ; ), sought to engage both the online and real world power of this human signal, as a means to understand how I could be myself--a liberal feminist with a sexual …

Impact Of Image Personalization On Response Rate Of Direct Mail Advertising, Dandan Wang May 2010

Impact Of Image Personalization On Response Rate Of Direct Mail Advertising, Dandan Wang

Theses

With widespread adoption of full-color digital presses in the commercial printing industry, personalization has been enabled to create one-to-one marketing communication to enhance the effectiveness of print media advertising. Prior researches showed an increase in response rates with data-driven personalized direct mailings. However, the impact of image personalization on response rate of direct mail advertising is still unknown. This research used an experimental design to test the impact of image personalization on response rate of direct mail advertising. A direct mail postcard campaign was created with three levels of personalization (black-and-white name-only personalization, full-color name-only personalization, full-color name and image …

Legacy, Jamie Callahan May 2010

Legacy, Jamie Callahan

Theses

This thesis is an examination of family in relation to labor, as expressed through photography. My thesis exhibition, Legacy, grew out of a personal financial struggle while pursuing my graduate studies. Finding myself unable to find work to support my education, I began to travel back home to Chicago to work in my family's house painting business. These journeys to home sparked an epiphany creating a realization that the family business, from which I considered my enrollment at RIT an escape, was actually my salvation. The business I felt I had run from was now supporting my photographic ambitions. I …

American Sign Language Finger Challenge, Jeffrey Cougler May 2010

American Sign Language Finger Challenge, Jeffrey Cougler

Theses

In current websites and computer assisted learning programs, there are no interactive products that truly present real time fingerspelling in American Sign Language (ASL). At best, a site dislpays an array of illustrated static manual letters, which are displayed side by side like the roman alphabet letters to form a word. Another site flashes sequential photos of manual letters, as in the word, "S-W-E-A-T-E-R" , after which you type what you think you saw. In either case this is not real-time fingerspelling. Using the publication reference "Expressive and Receptive Fingerspelling for Hearing Adults" by Lavera M. Guillory, Macromedia Director MX …

Transformations, Tanvi Asher-Jones May 2010

Transformations, Tanvi Asher-Jones

Theses

As a designer, my life experiences have influenced my design practice. Over the past decade I have moved from one culture to another and lived through cultural and language adaptations. These transitions have interested me in the issue of transience and how it relates to the role of identity, belonging, and living in a society of global and technological developments. For the past few years I have been working with the idea of fabrics merged with architecture and exploring concerns in relation to the body, memory, temporal, mobility and most recently the environment. This thesis project evolves around the idea …

Attitudes Toward Hazaragi, Abedin Jamal May 2010

Attitudes Toward Hazaragi, Abedin Jamal

Theses

This study examined the attitudes of young educated Hazaras towards Hazaragi, a politically low-prestigious language spoken in Afghanistan. The instrument included a questionnaire made of Attitude questions and Descriptive questions. The respondents expressed their beliefs about the linguistic entity of Hazaragi, desire to maintain Hazaragi, value of Hazaragi, and domains of use of Hazaragi. The results showed that half of the Hazaras who participated in the study considered Hazaragi to be a language whereas the other half did not. The majority of the participants demonstrated a commitment to maintain Hazaragi and to speak Hazaragi. With regards to domains of use, …

The Environmental Concern Of Youth At A Ymca Youth Adventure Camp, Sarah A. Schneider

Theses

This study was conducted to examine and report on the environmental concern of the youth participants of the Teen Adventure program at YMCA Camp Jones Gulch to determine if those ideas altered over the course of the campers' chosen summer camp experience. Campers and their guardians were asked to provide consent and assent to participate. Forty-three participants completed both a pre and posttest survey which included 15 items on a Likert-type scale asking participants to rate their agreement with statements about the environment. Results indicated that neither activity nor age was significant in explaining differences. However, further examination showed a …

Rational Action: Reasons, Causes, And Choices, David James Redmond Apr 2010

Rational Action: Reasons, Causes, And Choices, David James Redmond

Theses

I argue that agents, by exercising their wills, cause action-results and that volitions or willings are uncaused basic actions. I motivate the existence of volitions by highlighting the important role they play in providing an answer to Wittgenstein's famous question, “What is left over if I subtract the fact that my arm goes up from the fact that I raise my arm?” That volitions do not have action-results is central to my argument. This has as a consequence that volitions are causally basic actions, i.e., actions which do not have results that are caused by more basic actions. That is, …

A Virtue Theoretic Solution To The Problem Of Moral Luck, Jonathan Trevor Spelman Apr 2010

A Virtue Theoretic Solution To The Problem Of Moral Luck, Jonathan Trevor Spelman

Theses

At the beginning of his famous paper “Moral Luck,” Thomas Nagel notes that it is intuitively plausible that people cannot be morally assessed for what is beyond their control. He then argues that most, if not all, of what people do is beyond their control. Thus, Nagel concludes that individuals must deny that people cannot be morally assessed for what is beyond their control, alter the way they think about morality, or abandon the belief that moral assessment is possible. I contend that one’s best option is to alter the way one thinks about morality and therefore draw from the …

The Effect Of Economic Conditions, Gender Equality, And Women’S Empowerment On Cross-National Trends In Rape, Meghan Lynn Rogers Apr 2010

The Effect Of Economic Conditions, Gender Equality, And Women’S Empowerment On Cross-National Trends In Rape, Meghan Lynn Rogers

Theses

The purpose of the study is to examine changes in rape over time in the United States and Europe. Little previous research examines changes in rape trends over time, or compares rape trends across nations. I propose that economic conditions, gender equality, and empowerment of women can explain the changes in rape over time in the United States and Europe. To test this research question, a GLS cross-sectional time-series analysis was conducted of rape rates in the United States and thirteen European nations from 1990 to 2003. Results show that consumer confidence, unemployment, gender development, human development, and gender empowerment …

Irrelevance And Evaluation: Two Arguments Against Gauthier's Contractarianism, Micah William Svejda Apr 2010

Irrelevance And Evaluation: Two Arguments Against Gauthier's Contractarianism, Micah William Svejda

Theses

This paper provides two arguments against David Gauthier’s version of contractarianism, presented to weaken the cumulative case for this view. Gauthier provides a test for which moral claims are justified: a hypothetical agreement. This agreement consists of those constraints that rational persons would accept. A good many of our moral claims actually fail this test. But despite this fact, complying with justified moral claims makes us better off. By doing so, we are able to gain the benefits of cooperation, available only to those who cooperate. Gauthier thus provides us with a theory of morals by agreement. The first argument …

Categorial Intentions, James Leo Virtel Apr 2010

Categorial Intentions, James Leo Virtel

Theses

Hypothetical intentionalism splits artistic intentions into two types: semantic intentions—which are concerned with the meaning of an artwork—and categorial intentions—which are concerned with how an artwork should be classified. Categorial intentions are a necessary condition for properly interpreting an artwork; without them, an artwork can have an infinite number of interpretations. Jerrold Levinson argues that categorial intentions are extrinsic to the artwork while Mark Rollins argues that microintentions—small scale representations that are intrinsic to paintings and other visual forms of art—are intrinsic to the artwork and sufficient to determine the artwork’s category. I argue against Rollins by showing that microintentions …

Investing In The Millennials: A Comparison Of Financial Services Web Pages, Maureen Elizabeth Hergenroether Apr 2010

Investing In The Millennials: A Comparison Of Financial Services Web Pages, Maureen Elizabeth Hergenroether

Theses

A current opportunity exists for financial services companies to find new customers in the "Millennial Generation." This requires incorporating persuasion techniques that are effective on this generation into marketing strategies, particularly with the mass media outlet of choice for Millennials, the Internet. This research explored tenets of the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to consider how Millennials' characteristics as a generation, as well as individual traits such as Need for Cognition (NfC), might influence their perceptions of a company's credibility. Students were shown one of two Internet home pages for a fictional financial services company that varied in information quantity and …

Fore Majeure And Other Stories, Jennifer Megan Nord Apr 2010

Fore Majeure And Other Stories, Jennifer Megan Nord

Theses

Force Majeure and Other Stories explores the imperfect way people often make life-altering decisions. Many times, this results from circumstance — an unexpected situation requiring an immediate decision presents itself — but we also often bring the need for such decisions upon ourselves, when our dissatisfaction with the banality of everyday life leads to the desire to pursue an imagined, and many times idealized, alternate reality. This collection of short stories explores the factors that shape our decisions — from inertia to the strength of emotional ties. Each story in this collection follows a character who encounters such a decision …

“Un Écho, Un Simulacre”: The Male Artist And The Woman In Trilby, Hyun-Jin Lim Apr 2010

“Un Écho, Un Simulacre”: The Male Artist And The Woman In Trilby, Hyun-Jin Lim

Theses

George Du Maurier’s novel Trilby (1894) traces the relationships between a group of male artists in French Bohemia of the 1850s and the single prominent female figure of the novel, Trilby. As with many popular novels involving a romantic plot, the men all fall in love with one girl, in this case a laundress-turned-model-turned-singer of androgynous physique and questionable virtue. However, the fact that all of the novel’s central characters are male artists, as is the author himself, begs the question of the role of the woman in artistic creation, especially that of the male artist of nineteenth-century England. Although …

Simplifying Complex Information Structures: The Application Of Archiving And Mapping Strategies In The Design Of Prescription Drug Labeling, Sheetal Alreja Apr 2010

Simplifying Complex Information Structures: The Application Of Archiving And Mapping Strategies In The Design Of Prescription Drug Labeling, Sheetal Alreja

Theses

Information Design involves finding meaningful solutions to raw and complex data that is difficult to understand. Archiving and Mapping are approached as means of information design during the course of this thesis study. The process of Archiving involves collection, documentation and organization of data. Traditional Archiving methods are studied along with analyzing organization of large amounts of information in the form of web sites, publications, annual reports and reference books. The approach towards Mapping is not limited to just geographic contexts. Maps can be visualized in the form of an idea, metaphor or process. Graphic Design elements such as color, …

In Defense Of Two Intentionalism-Defeating Inverted Spectrum Thought Experiments, Pendaran Roberts Mar 2010

In Defense Of Two Intentionalism-Defeating Inverted Spectrum Thought Experiments, Pendaran Roberts

Theses

Inverted spectrum thought experiments have often been used to argue against Intentionalism. Eric Marcus, in his article entitled “Intentionalism and the Imaginability of the Inverted Spectrum,” defends two versions of Intentionalism, which he calls Intentionalism and Converse Intentionalism, from four inverted-spectrum based arguments. Marcus labels the four arguments from which he defends Intentionalism the implausible error, symmetry, no-inference, and best theory of representation arguments. In this article, I will bolster the arguments from no-inference and symmetry in order that they avoid Marcus’ defenses. Specifically, I will first show that the argument from no-inference may be modified to comply with Marcus’ …

Study On Developing A Potential Way-Finding Map Design Of An Iphone & Ipod Web Application For Rochester Institute Of Technology (Rit) Library, Jeong Kim

Theses

Have you ever wondered how many wall maps are actually used as "maps" rather than as decoration? Have you ever had trouble finding your way around small areas? Have you ever had a hard time finding brochures, even when they're displayed right at the entry or on the first floor of a building? Since the beginning of human civilization, wayfinding systems have been developed as tools to deliver information and assist people seeking routes or specific locations. Updates to new technologies have allowed vast quantities of information of varying quality to become a huge part of our lives. However, signs …

Effects Of Video-Conferencing On Gaze Behavior And Communication, Leanne Bohannon Feb 2010

Effects Of Video-Conferencing On Gaze Behavior And Communication, Leanne Bohannon

Theses

Through the use of eye-tracking and conversation analysis this study examined the impact of video-conferencing on communication. Paired participants performed a collaborative task over four communication media: face-to-face; desktop video-conferencing with eye contact; and life-size video-conferencing with and without eye contact. Participants more frequently checked the information their partner verbally relayed when communicating face-to-face and over life-size video-conferencing with eye contact. They also looked more at their partner when conversing over life-size video-conferencing with eye contact compared to the other conditions. The results imply that the mode across which we communicate does influence our verbal and non-verbal interactions but that …

Re:Collection, Gretchen L. Arnold Feb 2010

Re:Collection, Gretchen L. Arnold

Theses

This thesis explores preservation and obsolescence in relation to memory and the family photograph. Through a variety of erasure processes applied to discarded vernacular imagery and projections, the artist manipulated the content, framing and perspective of alleged family memories. The specific techniques utilized include digital erasure, removal by cutting implements, targeted bleaching and the re-photographing of projected Kodachromes into selective fragments. This process facilitated the investigation of the relationship between family photographs, formation of individual memory and the life cycle of family narrative. This work raises questions about the normative sociological factors at play in memory preservation and the constructed …

Beginning, Persisting, And Ceasing To Play: A Stage Uses And Gratifications Approach To Multiplayer Video Games, Matthew Shand Jan 2010

Beginning, Persisting, And Ceasing To Play: A Stage Uses And Gratifications Approach To Multiplayer Video Games, Matthew Shand

Theses

Scholars maintain media use is purposeful and the key to understanding media effects lies in understanding the reasons people use media. Previous uses and gratifications research regarding video game use assumes player motivations are constant variables, as researchers did not measure player motivations over the stages of long-term game use. The present study investigated differences between multiplayer video game user motivations across three stages of game play - beginning, persisting, and ceasing to play. Data from survey instruments distributed via online message boards showed statistically significant changes in motivations from both the beginning and persisting stages of play as compared …
