Frederic W. Goudy Correspondence 1935-1946, Anne Thomen
Frederic W. Goudy Correspondence 1935-1946, Anne Thomen
Theses
American printing of the late nineteenth century was crude and commercial in the worst sense. The ideals and vitality that William Morris, Emery Walker, C. H. St. John Hornby, Charles Ricketts, T.J. Cobden-Sanderson and others injected into English printing during the last decades of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth were known to relatively few Americans. One of those few Americans was Frederic W. Goudy, March 8, 1865--May 11, 1947. Paul Johnston in an article for the Fleuron (No. VII, 1930, p. 191A) wrote, "It was the part of Frederic W. Goudy to help the general printer in America …
Electron Microscope Investigation Of Silver Halide Crystals, R. David Williams
Electron Microscope Investigation Of Silver Halide Crystals, R. David Williams
Theses
This paper describes two methods utilizing the transmission electron microscope for studying the structural characteristics of photographic silver halide grains: (1) direct observation and subsequent determination of the grain size-frequency distribution for a given emulsion and (2) the carbon replica technique for studying the external structure of the grains. Other uses of the electron microscope in photographic research that could be applied at R.I.T. are briefly discussed.
Correlation Study Between Subjective And Objective Scene Classifications, Craig Campbell
Correlation Study Between Subjective And Objective Scene Classifications, Craig Campbell
Theses
In addition to the quality of an original (transparency or reflection) preferred halftone reproduction is also dependent on scene classification. That is, how the tones of the original are rendered. If the majority of the picture area contains light tones, it is referred to as a high key image. Should the majority of picture area be confined to dark tones, it is referred to as a low key image. When the picture area is composed of the entire tone scale (white, grays, and black), it is referred to as a normal key image. The problem of how to objectively classify …
The Effect Of Silicic Acid In The Fountain Solution, Kayode Ajibade
The Effect Of Silicic Acid In The Fountain Solution, Kayode Ajibade
Theses
Silicic acid is a water soluble colloidal resin which can be obtained commercially. The effect of silicic acid as a desensitizer in fountain solution was studied. The resin of this colloidal solution was compared to gum arabic solution. The study included the investigation of the physical properties of the solution at different concentrations as well as press performance. Comparisons were drawn regarding wettability, viscosity, surface tension, dot size change, minimum dampening rate to clean-up the non-image areas, resolution, resistance to scum, blinding of image areas, rate of de-inking over- run non-image areas, performance distinction between lithium silicate and sodium silicate, …
Punctuation Frequency In Selected American Daily Newspapers, Andrew Malcolm
Punctuation Frequency In Selected American Daily Newspapers, Andrew Malcolm
Theses
American daily newspapers present millions of punctuated sentences to the public, yet--after an extensive search of literature for similar studies--no comprehensive study of punctuation frequency seems to have been made before this study. It is hypothesized (1) that punctuation appears at predictable rates in the main news section of American daily newspapers, (2) that statistically significant differences exist in punctuation frequency between each of five selected newspapers and--by group--between those of large and small cities, and (3) that statistically significant differences exist in punctuation frequency between 1976, 1966, 1956 and 1946. Five newspapers were selected for the study: The New …

Quality Aspects Of Holographic Image Deblurring, Robert Kalita, Lawrence White
Theses
The process of holographic image enhancement was investigated with respect to image quality. A maximum improvement in MTF of 60% was achieved. The process itself was found difficult due to the critical natures of many of its steps. The theory of image enhancement by optical processing is explained in detail and the reasons for using a holographic filter are discussed.
The Effects Of Pressure On The Biodegradability Of Sanitary Sewage In A Model Activated Sludge Reactor, Nicholas A. Mezei
The Effects Of Pressure On The Biodegradability Of Sanitary Sewage In A Model Activated Sludge Reactor, Nicholas A. Mezei
Theses
Based on existing information concerning the effects of pressure on the biodegradability of sanitary sewage, a model activated sludge reactor was used in conjunction with pressurization to determine the viability of pressurization as a primary sewage treatment process.
Municipal sewage samples were pressurized at 40 psig for one hour with an excess of oxygen. An air compressor and a steel drum were used for sample pressurization. A non-pressurized control sample was maintained. After pressurization, the samples were fed into separate model activated sludge reactors. Biodegradability of both types of effluent was measured by determining their five day biochemical oxygen demands …

Modulation Of Cyclic Amp Phosphodiesterase, Gary Fouquet
Theses
Modulation of kidney cyclic AMP pdase by diuretics and antihypertensives was studied. It was found that spironolactone activates pdase and that furosemide, ethacrynic acid, triameterine , quinethazone, metolazone, chlorothiazide, propranolol and hydralazine, inhibit pdase. The relative tissue specificity (medulla or cortex) for some of the compounds appears to be in agreement with the proposed sites of drug action via pharmocological mechanisms which do not involve Inter action with cAMP pdase . The specific activity of pdase in the medulla was found to be double that in the cortex. Pdase was found to be a complex enzyme with at least two …

Chemical And Physical Properties Of Nitryl Chloride, Andreas J. Illies
Chemical And Physical Properties Of Nitryl Chloride, Andreas J. Illies
Theses
Nitryl chloride (ClNO2) and nitrosyl chloride (ClNO) are pollutants that have been detected in the lower atmosphere.1 Interconnecting chemical reactions between the chlorine and nitrogen oxide cycles of the stratosphere may also produce these molecules, Two methods for·preparing ClNO were evaluated, and experimental techniques for determining the purity of ClNO2 were developed, The vapor pressure arid mass spectrum for ClNO2 and the ultraviolet absorption cross sections of ClNO2 and ClNO were investigated. Preliminary results for the photochemical decomposition of ClNO2 with 253.7 and 356.5 run radiation are reported, and the energetically possible steps for photochemical dissociation of ClNO2 are summarized, …
Movement Education In The Elementary School, Ruth Ann Meyer
Movement Education In The Elementary School, Ruth Ann Meyer
Theses
"Movement Education in the Elementary School" by Linda Ann Meyer (1971), emphasizes the importance of integrating movement education into elementary school curriculums. Meyer identifies three key areas of movement education: basic movement, sport, and dance. These components are essential for a child's physical development and self-concept.
Meyer draws from the philosophies of Eleanor Metheny and others, explaining that movement is not merely physical activity but also a meaningful experience involving cognitive, emotional, and creative engagement. Basic movement education serves as the foundation, focusing on body and spatial awareness, and the development of locomotive and axial movements. Sport education emphasizes physical …
The Inter-Relationship Of Therapy And Education Of Parents, Beatrice Nathan
The Inter-Relationship Of Therapy And Education Of Parents, Beatrice Nathan
Theses
The thesis titled The Inter-Relationship of Therapy and Education of Parents explores the connection between family therapy and parental education programs. The author, Beatrice Nathan, emphasizes that parent-child dynamics play a crucial role in a child’s emotional and psychological development. By examining different educational programs, such as Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.) and family therapy approaches, Nathan aims to demonstrate how educating parents can help prevent family crises and improve child-rearing practices.
Nathan argues that parents often face challenges in managing their responsibilities and frequently experience anxiety about raising their children in a healthy environment. She highlights various parental education techniques …

Sharpness Ratings Of A Complete Imaging System, David Blanchard
Sharpness Ratings Of A Complete Imaging System, David Blanchard
Theses
In a complete imaging system, consisting of a camera and a camera lens, four black and white films, an enlarger, a print made from each film and a number of observers, the resultant images were judged subjectively. The system was also evaluated by four acutance models. When the acutance ratings were compared with the sharpness ratings there was not a significant correlation between the two ratings. The author believes that there would be a better correlation between the two ratings if the acutance models were used under the same conditiobs and the same constants as they were formulated under.

A Digital Signal Processing System Developed For The Optimal Use Of High Density Magnetic Storage Media, Victor Hernandez
A Digital Signal Processing System Developed For The Optimal Use Of High Density Magnetic Storage Media, Victor Hernandez
Theses
High density data recording has traditionally been an essential factor in the development of communication and transmission systems. However, recently more sophisticated applications, including video recording, have necessitated refinements of this technology. This study concentrates on the signal processing techniques used to inhance the packing density of stored data. A comparison of the spectral mapping characteristics of different codes illustrates that the need for equalization can be eliminated and that significant bandwidth reduction can be achieved. Secondly, consideration is given to the deleterious effects of flutter, its associated effects on high density data recording, and the constraints imposed on the …
Finite Element Analysis And Program For Stokes Fluid Flow, Jeffrey Steele
Finite Element Analysis And Program For Stokes Fluid Flow, Jeffrey Steele
Theses
The theory and computer program for finite element analysis of Stokes (creeping) fluid flow is presented. The element is an eight node, two dimensional isoparametric quadrillateral. The element is formulated directly from the Stokes equations of motion, a special case of the Navier-Stokes equations where inertia terms are dropped, using the method of weighted residuals with Galerkin's criterion applied. Velocities in two directions are solved for at all eight nodes while pressure is solved simultaneously at the four corner nodes only. Several test cases have been run with the program. Very good accuracy was achieved in modeling velocity profiles for …

Interaction Of Bromide And Organic Antifoggants In Development, Miriam Decastro, Kim Eisenberg
Interaction Of Bromide And Organic Antifoggants In Development, Miriam Decastro, Kim Eisenberg
Theses
Various levels of bromide and an organic antifoggant, benzotriazole, were combined in a developer and investigated to determine if an interaction existed. Both nitrogen burst agitation and viscous development were used. It was found that benzotriazole is such a strong antifoggant that interaction occurs only at low density levels, and the influence of benzotriazole increases with development time.
