Quantifying The Effects Of Customer Predictability On Battery Energy Storage System Cost And Emissions, Mudit Bhadresh Purohit Jun 2022

Quantifying The Effects Of Customer Predictability On Battery Energy Storage System Cost And Emissions, Mudit Bhadresh Purohit

Theses

Electricity providers are using variable pricing to encourage customers to shift energy consumption from “peak” times. This presents a great opportunity for the customers to reduce their bills using this variable pricing strategy coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS). The schedule of charging and discharging the BESS depends on the forecasted customer demand data. Forecasts are bound to have a certain degree of error associated with them, and hence it becomes important to understand the effect of these forecasting errors on the cost and the emissions associated with scheduling of the BESS. In this work, a method has …

Un-Fair Trojan: Targeted Backdoor Attacks Against Model Fairness, Nicholas Furth May 2022

Un-Fair Trojan: Targeted Backdoor Attacks Against Model Fairness, Nicholas Furth

Theses

Machine learning models have been shown to be vulnerable against various backdoor and data poisoning attacks that adversely affect model behavior. Additionally, these attacks have been shown to make unfair predictions with respect to certain protected features. In federated learning, multiple local models contribute to a single global model communicating only using local gradients, the issue of attacks become more prevalent and complex. Previously published works revolve around solving these issues both individually and jointly. However, there has been little study on the effects of attacks against model fairness. Demonstrated in this work, a flexible attack, which we call Un-Fair …

Low-Rank Clustering Via Lp1-Pca, Matt Krol May 2022

Low-Rank Clustering Via Lp1-Pca, Matt Krol

Theses

In recent years, subspace clustering has found many practical use cases which include, for example, image segmentation, motion segmentation, and facial clustering. The image and video data that is common to these types of applications often has high dimensionality. Rather than viewing high dimensionality as a drawback, we propose a novel algorithm for subspace clustering that takes advantage of the high dimensional nature of such data. We call this algorithm LP1-PCA Spectral Clustering. Specifically, we introduce a concept that we call cluster-ID sparsity, and we propose an algorithm called LP1-PCA to attain this in low data dimensions. Our novel LP1-PCA …

The Effect Of Different Feeding Regimes On Recent Nutritional And Growth Measurements In Juvenile California Killifish (Fundulus Parvipinnis), Emily Parks

Theses

Gaining a deeper understanding of in-situ growth approximations for juvenile fishes is one way to understand how food consumption may affect fish growth. If variations in growth rate are strongly mirrored by past food status, then the condition (degree of well-being) of fish can be potentially used as a reference for relative prey availability. Furthermore, confirming that there is a positive relationship between food availability and fish growth rate is a critical first step to deepen our understanding of growth rate variation as well as examining if growth can be a proxy for habitat quality.

The California killifish (Fundulus …

Why Did You Clone These Identifiers? Using Grounded Theory To Understand Identifier Clones, Luis Angel Gutierrez Galaviz

Theses

Developers spend most of their time comprehending source code, with some studies estimating this activity takes between 58% to 70% of a developer’s time. To improve the readability of source code, and therefore the productivity of developers, it is important to understand what aspects of static code analysis and syntactic code structure hinder the understandability of code. Identifiers are a main source of code comprehension due to their large volume and their role as implicit documentation of a developer’s intent when writing code. Despite the critical role that identifiers play during program comprehension, there are no regulated naming standards for …

Quantum Solutions For Training A Single Layer Binary Neural Network, Sabrina Ly May 2022

Quantum Solutions For Training A Single Layer Binary Neural Network, Sabrina Ly

Theses

Quantum computing is a relatively new field starting in the early 1980s when a physicist named Paul Benioff proposed a quantum mechanical model of the Turing machine, introducing quantum computers. Previously, the focus of most quantum computers was in the study of quantum applications instead of broad applications due to the fact that quantum technology is a newer field with many technology constraints, such as limited qubits and noisy environments. However, quantum computers are still capable of using quantum mechanics to solve specific algorithms with an exponential speed-up in comparison to their classical counterparts. One key algorithm is the HHL …

Predicting Hepatotoxicity In Patients Receiving T-Dm1 Treatment Using Alt Blood Concentrations, Nick Fidalgo, Chris Gatesman, Phillip Lee, Brett Peters, Samantha Sandwick, Alex Shetler

Theses

During cancer treatments, it is imperative to keep a close eye on the side effects of whatever drug you are using to target the infected cells. For example, many drugs will target cancerous cells by attaching themselves onto different receptors on the membranes of the cells. However, these treatments are not always exact in affecting only the cancerous cells. One of the major side effects of these drugs is that different types of non-cancerous cells are accidentally killed during the process of cancer treatments when the drug latches onto the similar receptors of those cells. For example, when the antibody-drug …

Design And Evaluation Of A Machine Learning Based Model For Optimization Of Residential Battery Energy Storage System Scheduling For Cost And Emissions Reductions, Kevin George

Theses

Usage of battery energy storage system (BESS) to facilitate demand response (DR) programs such as time of use (TOU) pricing can reduce utility bills for residential customers. However, using such a system for minimizing electric bills under these rate structures has the potential to cause an increase in emissions from the grid system. The increased emissions were majorly due to bulk energy storage of electricity produced by off-peak generators with higher emission rates and excess energy consumption due to battery inefficiency. BESS operating to optimize competing objectives to minimize utility cost and minimize CO2 emissions requires complex models that require …
