Enhancement Of The Thermophysical Capability Of The Chemical Engineering Simulation System, Joydeep Banerjee Sep 1985

Enhancement Of The Thermophysical Capability Of The Chemical Engineering Simulation System, Joydeep Banerjee

Theses

The CHESS (Chemical Engineering Emulation System) is a generalized steady-state, sequential-modular chemical process simulation program. In this thesis, the thermophysical data prediction capability of CHESS has been expanded by: incorporating more accurate thermodynamic phase-behavior models, by utilizing these models in generating a wider range of thermophysical properties, and providing an updated and expanded database for pure-component physical properties.

The overall performance of the simulation system's thermophysical package has been evaluated using the study of a subprocess consisting of various rotational equipment modules.

In this work, the Chao-Seader liquid phase activity coefficient model has been reinstalled in conjunction with the original …

Microbial Characteristics Of An Industrial Mixed Liquor After Exposure To Phenolic Compounds, Patricia L. Boyle Sep 1985

Microbial Characteristics Of An Industrial Mixed Liquor After Exposure To Phenolic Compounds, Patricia L. Boyle

Theses

The microbial characteristics of a mixed population from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners (PVSC) Wastewater Treatment Plant in Newark were examined. This plant handles about 250 million gallons per day of mixed sewerage, with a large industrial component. The microbial species were characterized using standard plating techniques, morphology, microscopic observation, and biochemical tests. These characteristics were determined for the fresh liquor, and after successive batch exposure to phenol (100 ppm) and 2-chlorophenol (20 ppm). Predator/prey, gram positive to gram negative bacteria ratios, and the fungi and protozoan populations were also determined. These results were compared with those previously obtained using …

Information Retrieval In The Office For Effective Communication, Herbert Josef Schwoerer Sep 1985

Information Retrieval In The Office For Effective Communication, Herbert Josef Schwoerer

Theses

The office worker of tomorrow, who is very likely to be an 'information-worker', will be heavily involved with communication of any kind. Effective communication, however, can only be guaranteed if the user is in control of information overload.

OIRS, the Office Information Retrieval System, designed and developed as a Master Thesis, is an approach to support the office worker in storing, maintaining, and retrieving textual information. By providing the user with a tool to impose a self-defined and self-maintained structure upon information or references to it, information overload, which is caused by lack of information about information, can be decreased. …

Rochester: Documented, Peter Eberlin

Theses

Over a two-year period certain unappreciated, visual and factual aspects of the City of Rochester were systematically documented. These aspects of the City of Rochester consisted of Mobil Gas Stations and their owners, closed gas stations, and new businesses in former gas stations; the City Limits and residents, animals, and other noisemakers existing proximal to the City Limits; places where I had to wait in line; the MEN and WOMEN of City Hall; the dotted lines that separate traffic lanes; and a short, dead-end street that was bull dozed over and left for field. The process of documenting these aspects …

Comparison Of Two Mtf Measurement Methods: Sine-Wave Vs Edge Gradient Analysis, John Cadou Jul 1985

Comparison Of Two Mtf Measurement Methods: Sine-Wave Vs Edge Gradient Analysis, John Cadou

Theses

A comparison of the sine-wave and edge gradient MTF measurement methods, on a photographic black and white film, was performed. A statistical test, a CMT acutance test, and a graphical comparison showed that there was no significant difference between the two measurement methods. This was true for the film processed to have large adjacency effects, as well as for the film processed to have no adjacency effects; however, the agreement was slightly better for the latter process. The research also showed that aligning the midpoints of the edge traces, normalizing the individual edge traces, and then averaging several edge traces …

A Recursive Fractal Design Generator For Dimensions Zero To Two Implemented Within A Two Dimensional Core Graphics Package, Elizabeth Lehmann Jul 1985

A Recursive Fractal Design Generator For Dimensions Zero To Two Implemented Within A Two Dimensional Core Graphics Package, Elizabeth Lehmann

Theses

This thesis incorporates the technique developed by Benoit Mandelbrot to describe recursive fractals into an interactive graphics package based on the Core Graphics System (Core) produced by an ACM SIGGRAPH Committee (1977, 1979). The graphics package encompasses simple standard geometric shapes as well as the recursive fractals. To draw those fractals requires knowing both the basic shape or generator, and the points of recursion. These two pieces are acquired through the using of two windows which allow the generator and the points of recursion to be built. Once built, the fractal recursion level is chosen interactively on the main drawing. …

Image Reconstruction Using Wiener Filtering And Unsharp Masking: A Computer Model, Jay Berman Jul 1985

Image Reconstruction Using Wiener Filtering And Unsharp Masking: A Computer Model, Jay Berman

Theses

Research was conducted to computer model and compare the image reconstruction obtainable using Wiener filtering and unsharp masking. Wiener filtering and unsharp masking are techniques used to improve image quality and interpretation. It was demonstrated that far greater image restoration is obtained by Wiener filter than by unsharp masking because unsharp masking, unlike Wiener filtering, enhanced image noise along with the edges. A user friendly computer model, that may be used as a tutorial aid for Image Science students, incorporating Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) techniques was designed. Graphics allow the user to follow each stage of the image processing.

Buckling Of Some Grooved Columns, Clovis Georges Baaklini May 1985

Buckling Of Some Grooved Columns, Clovis Georges Baaklini

Theses

Columns with two types of transverse grooves are analyzed: a one-sided groove whose bottom is parallel to a vertical plane and cross-section is constant, and a concentric uniform groove. Then, for illustration and to be more specific, round columns are selected such that the cross-section becomes partially circular, for one-sided grooves and totally circular for a concentric groove. The columns are simply supported at both ends and subjected to a compressive eccentric load P at eccentricity e. The static equilibrium of such columns is studied via two types of solutions: the solution to three-segment column and a substantially simpler but …

Pressure Distributions In Microvascular Network, David Moshenberg May 1985

Pressure Distributions In Microvascular Network, David Moshenberg

Theses

The objective of this study was to find a practical way of estimating the pressure distribution in a network of microvascular vessels. The pressure distribution was evaluated twice, namely before vasodilations or vasoconstrictions and after the network of vessels reached a new steady state with respect to pressure and flow. Along with determining the pressure distribtuion, the simulation also calculated an effective blood viscosity coefficient for the network.

Poiseuille's equation and the axial component of the equation of motion were used to evaluate the steady state pressure and velocity distributions in each vessel. The continuity equation (conservation of mass) was …

Development Of New Products Involving Various Uncertainties For Success, Manuel J. Senra May 1985

Development Of New Products Involving Various Uncertainties For Success, Manuel J. Senra

Theses

The development of new products is a very important task for any company, since the survival of most of the companies depends on their ability to introduce new products on the market. This is not, by all means, an easy task; it is seen from the large number of unsuccessful new products reported.

It is been proved that out of every ten products which emerge from Research and Development(R & D), only two become successes. For reasons like the one mentioned and because larger and larger funds are allocated to R & D, it is a very important task to …

The Catabolism Of Arginine By Lactobacillus Brevis In A Chemostat, Jeanette Carque

Theses

A total of thirty chemostat runs were evaluated for steady state biomass concentration of L. brevis and arginine deiminase activity at dilution rates ranging from 0.022 to 0.1.07 h-1 for a substrate feed consisting of 1.0% glucose and 0.5% arginine (w/v). Biomass concentration and enzyme activity responses were also evaluated for variations in glucose concentration from 0.05% to 1.5% and variations in arginine concentrations from 0.25% to 1.0% at a constant dilution rate (0.06 h-1).

The system exhibited multiple steady states for the range of dilution rates from 0.022 to 0.107 h-1. A steady state …

Computer Simulation Of A Batch Distillation Column With A Reflux Divider, Michael Gerard Clarke May 1985

Computer Simulation Of A Batch Distillation Column With A Reflux Divider, Michael Gerard Clarke

Theses

The operation of a batch distillation column with a reflux divider has been mathematically simulated to reproduce operational equipment.

The operation of the column consists of one or more product recoveries. During each product recovery period the column alternates between total reflux and total product withdrawal, with the product withdrawal period being 2 — 5 seconds. Between product recoveries the column operating conditions can be reset.

The basic assumption of this batch distillation simulation is that the column completely equilibrates during the period of total reflux. The determination of the total reflux condition is obtained computationally using the iterative Newton—Raphson …

Skyline Technique For Least Square Temporal Finite Element Method, Ying-Woei Hu May 1985

Skyline Technique For Least Square Temporal Finite Element Method, Ying-Woei Hu

Theses

Skyline technique is known to be one of the most efficient numerical methods for solving symmetric and positive definite simultaneous linear algebraic equations whose coefficient matrix is banded and sparse. This technique considers non-zero elements below the skyline only and manipulates Gaussian elimination process efficiently.

In recent years, the finite element methods applied to discretize the space domain has been successfully extended to time domain discretization. This new technique, temporal finite elements, makes it possible to numerically solve initial value problems in a manner similar to boundary value problems.

This thesis introduces skyline technique to one of the temporal finite …

The accuracy and repeatability of the system improved by measuring additional parameters like barometric pressure and …

Random Genetic Drift Diffusion Model And Deterministic And Stochastic Models Of Epidemics, Norman W. Loney May 1985

Random Genetic Drift Diffusion Model And Deterministic And Stochastic Models Of Epidemics, Norman W. Loney

Theses

In the Random Genetic Drift Diffusion model two approaches are taken. First we examined a discrete model that represent a relatively idealised version of the phenomena. Hefurther make the assumption that the Population reproduces itself and then dies, thus maintaining a finite population size at all times. If at a given locus there are two possible allels A and B and if X(t) is the number of A type in the genetic pool of size 2N, then 2N-X(t) is the number of B type. We then proceed to obtain a probability density function of X( t) by an Exact method …
