An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Optimum Tone Reproduction And Reproduction Size, Thomas A. Benson
An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Optimum Tone Reproduction And Reproduction Size, Thomas A. Benson
Theses
The thesis is an evaluation of preferred tone reproduction as a function of reproduction size. When photographs are reproduced photomechanically using the halftone process the main limitation in achieving a facsimile reproduction is the density range of the printing process. Because the printing processes normally used cannot achieve the same high density range as a photograph, tonal compression must occur. The manner in which the tonal compression is achieved has an important effect upon the appearance of the reproduction. The tone reproduction curve is a graphic method used to describe the relationship between the density of the original and the …
A Study Of Ink Trapping Comparing Gravimetric And Densitometric Methods Of Measurement, Jui-Lin Hsu
A Study Of Ink Trapping Comparing Gravimetric And Densitometric Methods Of Measurement, Jui-Lin Hsu
Theses
In 1958, Preucil suggested an equation to calculate ink trap based on measurements of a printed sheet with a densitometer. Preucil's equation was based on the additivity rule and the proportional rule. However, these rules do not hold in all cases. Several alternative equations have been suggested. This study intends to examine the effectiveness of three ink trap equations using densitometry by means of comparing the calculated values to those measured by the gravimetric method. An attempt is also made to estimate the value of maximum printable density, Dm, in Hamilton's equation. The theoretical basis of each equation is briefly …
Color Transformation Modeling For Printed Images Using Interpolation Based On Barycentric Coordinates, K. Douglas Gennetten
Color Transformation Modeling For Printed Images Using Interpolation Based On Barycentric Coordinates, K. Douglas Gennetten
Theses
This document is a report on the research of a potentially superior method of color image transformation for producing rapid and accurate printed color output from a digitized color image. The primary objective is to reduce the complexities, inaccuracies, objectionable artifacts, and processing time common to current methods of color modeling. A new method of vector-corrected mathematical modeling combined with improved color space interpolation is studied. This achievement allows for rapid automatic closed-loop color-match calibration between image capture and output devices. Currently, digital image creation or manipulation systems rely on image proof printing which is slow and often of poor …

Analysis Of High-Speed Rotating Systems Using Timoshenko Beam Theory In Conjunction With The Transfer Matrix Method, Beth Andrews O'Leary
Analysis Of High-Speed Rotating Systems Using Timoshenko Beam Theory In Conjunction With The Transfer Matrix Method, Beth Andrews O'Leary
Theses
Higher operating speeds and increased sensitivity of modern electro-mechanical systems require improved methods for the computation of critical speeds and system response of flexible rotating shafts. Many high-speed systems generally contain disks with masses approaching the mass of the shaft. These observations emphasize the importance of including the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation of the shaft in the analysis. Traditional theory, which models a massless shaft, would be inaccurate for these systems. An analysis of flexible rotor systems has been performed using the Transfer Matrix Method. Although the method is well known, the present study utilizes Timoshenko Beam …
Points Of Hue, Andrea Kundin
Points Of Hue, Andrea Kundin
Theses
My intent in this thesis is to display the visual capabilities of the computer as a tool to assist fabric designers, interior designers and consumers in a growing and demanding market. These ideas evolved out of my own personal interest in two seemingly different yet historically related fields, computers and textiles, and my feeling that there might be an obvious solution to the somewhat complex problem of visualizing surface pattern, texture and color in relation to the environment.
Provenance Determination Of Bronze Age Pottery Using Neutron Activation Analysis, Debra Ann Kipler-Koch
Provenance Determination Of Bronze Age Pottery Using Neutron Activation Analysis, Debra Ann Kipler-Koch
Theses
Neutron activation analysis has been used for provenance determinations of Bronze Age pottery from two cities in the Jordan River and Dead Sea areas . A pottery shard group believed to represent the local clay composition of one of the sites based on statistical clustering procedures was used with a dilution factor method developed by H. Mommsen and colleagues (1) to determine the origin of the shards. Based on the dilution factor method, a provenance determination has been established for three of the thirty - two shards analyzed. Irradiations of 30 min, 1 hr, and 4 hr duration were performed …
Finite Element Analysis Of Embedded Blood Vessel Mechanics, I-En Lin
Finite Element Analysis Of Embedded Blood Vessel Mechanics, I-En Lin
Theses
Cardiac pump function is closely linked to myocardial oxygen supply during the cardiac cycle. Variations in cardiac output must be met with concurrent shifts in tissue blood flow if changing myocardial oxygen requirements are to be satisfied. Of particular importance is the adequate perfusion of the left ventricular myocardium. Experimental evidence indicates that some ninety percent of left ventricular oxygen demand is generated during systolic contraction of the myocardium. Paradoxically, blood flow measurements in the left coronary artery suggest minimal systolic perfusion. The asynchronous, phasic character of left coronary blood flow and myocardial oxygen demand has prompted much research into …

Comparison Of Four Digital Halftone Screen (Dither) Patterns Using Quantitative Analysis Of The Binary Image Microstructure, Jacquelyn S. Ellinwood
Comparison Of Four Digital Halftone Screen (Dither) Patterns Using Quantitative Analysis Of The Binary Image Microstructure, Jacquelyn S. Ellinwood
Theses
The ordered-dither halftoning technique which reproduces continuous tones with spatially encoded binary imaging elements uses the digital halftone screen. The effect at the microstructural level of four screens on tone reproduction, spatial signal reproduction, and quantization noise is evaluated by measuring the tone reproduction curve (TRC), the two-dimensional Fourier transform of a constant density patch, the degree of harmonic distortion (THD), the system Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), and the Wiener Spectrum (WS) produced by each screen. The applicablity of these five conventional image evaluation metrics on binary output is also evaluated. Spatial averaging is done to convert the binary output …
An Investigation Of New Methods To Improve The Accuracy Of Modern Color Spectrophotometers, Kelvin H. Petersen
An Investigation Of New Methods To Improve The Accuracy Of Modern Color Spectrophotometers, Kelvin H. Petersen
Theses
A study into the use of reflecting tiles to determine spectrophotometric errors and the corresponding correction values was accomplished. A method was developed to calculate the wavelength scale accuracy (out to a wavelength error of 5nm) using the inflection points of reflecting tiles' spectrophotometric curves. Using simulated error data, wavelength accuracy was determinable at seven distinct wavelengths over the range of 440 nm to 705 nm within an accuracy of 0.2 nm. Three methods, the Matrix, Selection, and Non-Linear, were developed to increase the accuracy of spectrophotometric data. Each method determined and corrected spectrophotometric data differently. The Matrix method was …

Study Of Steel-Concrete Interface Behavior Of Reinforced Concrete Members, Jun Wan
Theses
The main objective of this thesis work is to study the steel-concrete interface behavior of reinforced concrete members using the nonlinear finite element method.
The reinforced concrete member was modeled as a continuum consisting of plane stress rectangular elements which represent the concrete, pin-joint two node bar elements which represent the reinforcing steel, and the nondimensional linkage elements which represent the bond stress-slip, aggregate interaction and dowel action effects. The load increment procedure is employed to carry out the nonlinear analysis.
An axially loaded tensile specimen, a deep beam specimen and a shallow beam specimen were analyzed. The results from …

Environmental Assessment In Bioethanol Technology Using Immobilized Yeast Cells, Minoo Kandy Zarnegar
Theses
This study is undertaken from the standpoint of water pollution evaluation in bioethanol technology, using immobilized yeast cells. Evaluation of water pollution caused by immobilized yeast fermentation is the main objective of this research.
The pollution in water remaining at the end of ethanol production, which is normally discharged in the wastewater stream, has been analyzed by the measurement of biological oxygen demand (BOD), since BOD measurement is one of the widely used parameters for water pollution evaluation. BOD obtained from produced water (stillage) was between the range of 115- 360 mg/l. The variation in BOD depended upon the removal …

Experimental Evaluation Of J-Integral For Concrete Subjected To Impact Loading, Naishan Zhang
Theses
This thesis presents an experimental evaluation of J-integral for concrete subjected to impact loading. Twenty four three-point bend specimens with two different thicknesses and mid-span notch lengths were tested under impact velocities of 167.22 in/sec (424.74 cm/sec) and 261.78 in/sec (664.92 cm/sec). Multi specimen method was used to analyze and estimate JI and its critical J-Ic values. Effects of specimen thickness and impact velocity on J-Ic values were observed and discussed. Evaluation of J-Ic Values from the experimental results of this study indicated that can be characterized as a material constant even under different impact velocities. …
Progressive Transmission Of Images Using Pyramidal Structure, Chin-Hua Hsu
Progressive Transmission Of Images Using Pyramidal Structure, Chin-Hua Hsu
Theses
A progressive image transmission scheme based upon Laplacian pyramid structure is used for image coding over low-bandwidth channels. The filtering and differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) methods of image coding are generalized to allow quantization of the Laplacian images. Filtering is performed with a local, symmetric weighting function. The three different quantizers, (1) scalar quantizer, (2) memoryless vector quantizer (VQ), and (3) finite state vector quantizer (FSVQ), are used here to compare the results. In the receiver end, the image can be reconstructed using reverse procedure. The reconstructed image is not the same as the original image because of the …

Laser Perforation For Computer Paper, Claude F. Gattuso
Laser Perforation For Computer Paper, Claude F. Gattuso
Theses
In today's computer paper printing, cross and edge perforations are done only by mechanical perforators. The mechanical perforation process works fine since the width of the bridges and the length of the holes to be perforated remain large. Concerned with improvements in quality, printers have introduced microperforations. The holes and bridges of the perforation pattern are so small that after the user has torn off the sheet of computer paper along the perforation pattern, the edges of the document are very smooth and clean. Unfortunately, microperforations are reaching the limits of what can be achieved by the mechanical perforators. Because …
The Introduction, Demonstration And Evaluation Of A New Typeface Identification System, J. Ames Parsons
The Introduction, Demonstration And Evaluation Of A New Typeface Identification System, J. Ames Parsons
Theses
Graphic communicators, including typographers, designers, and descriptive bibliographers, are often called upon to identify typefaces. Since there are thousands of typefaces available in the marketplace today, it is unlikely that any one designer, typographer or bibliographer can name them all at sight. Accordingly, there is a need tfor a typeface identification system. The purpose of this paper is to introduce, demonstrate and evaluate such a system. An identification system called TYPE-ID was developed and tested. Two principles -- the "pass option" and the "null digit" -- were introduced. A sequence of questions was written for a number of different characters. …

Pay Equity: The Time Is Now, Stephanie Ann Nowack
Pay Equity: The Time Is Now, Stephanie Ann Nowack
Theses
The thesis "Pay Equity: The Time Is Now" by Stephanie Ann Nowak explores the persistent issue of wage disparity between men and women in the United States. Highlighting historical and societal factors, Nowak examines how traditional gender roles have contributed to systemic pay inequities, with women consistently earning less than men in comparable positions. This wage gap, exacerbated by societal expectations and occupational segregation, has been perpetuated by entrenched biases that undervalue women’s work, even in fields requiring similar skills to male-dominated roles.
Nowak discusses the impact of landmark legislation, such as the Equal Pay Act of 1964, which aimed …

Computer-Based Sales Information System, Mark R. Watkins
Theses
This paper will focus on a study of a Computer-Based Sales Information System as it would primarily apply to firms selling in industrial markets.
Over the past several years theorists have debated the issue of computers . Some theorists believe that computers enhance our work environment while others believe that computers eliminate jobs and create resentment. The first group supports the theory that computers aid our work environment and make our jobs more productive. The second group supports the theory that computers disrupt the work environment and cause inefficiencies through costly unproductive training of skills that are not job-related.

Theses
SQLSDM is a "front end" semantic data model to a SQL relational database management system (RDBMS). SQLSDM provides a more semantically complete RDBMS through the implementation of a Domain and Relational Integrity scheme. SQLSDM provides integrity definition functions and a sub-system to interpret SQL commands . Integrity system tables are created through the use of SQLSDM ' s domain definition command and SQL ' s "CREATE TABLE" command. As SQL database update commands are interpreted, SQLSDM uses these integrity tables to enforce domain and referential integrity. SQLSDM operates virtually transparent to the user and provides for greater database consistency and …
Parametric Splines In Tension, Surendra K. Gupta
Parametric Splines In Tension, Surendra K. Gupta
Theses
A brief review of curve fitting terminology is presented, and the cubic spline interpolation scheme is outlined. Parametric and non-parametric curve fitting techniques are compared. The technique to fit parametric cubic splines is derived using the Euler- Lagrange formulation. Previous work on splines in tension is identified. Employing the notion of splines in tension, a method is proposed to fit a parametric curve to a set of (n + 1) points in ^-dimension space satisfying a specified set of boundary conditions. The curve fitted will not have any inflection points within any span and will be invariant with respect to …
