Semi-Automated Dirsig Scene Modeling From 3d Lidar And Passive Imagery, Stephen R. Lach
Semi-Automated Dirsig Scene Modeling From 3d Lidar And Passive Imagery, Stephen R. Lach
Theses
The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model is an established, first-principles based scene simulation tool that produces synthetic multispectral and hyperspectral images from the visible to long wave infrared (0.4 to 20 microns). Over the last few years, significant enhancements such as spectral polarimetric and active Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) models have also been incorporated into the software, providing an extremely powerful tool for multi-sensor algorithm testing and sensor evaluation. However, the extensive time required to create large-scale scenes has limited DIRSIG’s ability to generate scenes ”on demand.” To date, scene generation has been a laborious, …
In All Directions: An Investigation Of Multidirectional Camera-Centric Rigs In Hypothetical Space, Brendan Bond
In All Directions: An Investigation Of Multidirectional Camera-Centric Rigs In Hypothetical Space, Brendan Bond
Theses
Because the world as we know it is quite often dominated by visual information, most human beings have learned to extract and interpolate data efficiently from what they perceive optically. With the advent of new technologies, however, humans are now presented with challenges of viewing the world in many ways previously deemed conventionally impossible. The ultimate purpose of this thesis is to explore the possibilities of multiple virtual “cameras” placed in hypothetical space (virtual space that mimics actual space, with three dimensional axis of translation) from a single point of origin, their integration in coordinate space, and the possibility of …
Reconfigurable Hardware For Color Space Conversion, Sreenivas Patil
Reconfigurable Hardware For Color Space Conversion, Sreenivas Patil
Theses
Color space conversion (CSC) is an important application in image and video processing systems. CSC has been implemented in software and various kinds of hardware. Hardware implementations can achieve a higher performance compared to software-only solutions. Application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are efficient and have good performance. However, they lack the programmability of devices such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). This thesis studies the performance vs. flexibility tradeoffs in the migration of an existing CSC design from an ASIC to an FPGA. The existing ASIC is used within a commercial color-printing pipeline. Performance is critical in this application. However, …

The pot and its contents should exist symbiotically, each elevating the other to heighten the enjoyment of the meal. In my current body of work, I am decorating the pots with layers of text. The text is a decorative element, as well as a record of my communication with …
Health Impacts From Diesel Freight Emissions: Development Of A Geospatial Analytical Framework For Policy Evaluation With A Case Study Of Sacramento, Ca, Colin Murphy
Theses
Diesel particulate matter, emitted by many types of freight transport, poses a health risk to populations living near freight activity. Accurate information about the magnitude and location of health impacts would help inform policy decisions at a number of levels. Existing methods, including atmospheric dispersion modeling, epidemiology or air quality measurement can estimate the magnitude of harm experienced by populations but these methods often require resources or expertise beyond the reach of some stakeholders, particularly those at local levels. This thesis describes a framework by which health impact estimation can be carried out utilizing readily available models and methodologies in …

Measurements And Control Of Noise Pollution From Dual Fuel Engine, Abdullah Ahmed Jawi Al Aseery
Theses
This study examines the effects of adding the water to the intake air of a dual fuel engine on the performance and combustion noise. Dual fuel engine is a diesel engine using small amount (5%) liquid diesel fuel as a pilot fuel and burns a liquefied petroleum gas as the main fuel. The addition of water to the combustion chamber has known effects on reducing the dangerous emission of nitrogen oxides. Previous research has attributed the observed reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions to a suppression of flame temperature due to quenching effects from the water, thereby reducing thermal NOx …
Real-Time Fusion And Projection Of Network Intrusion Activity, Stephen Reed Byers
Real-Time Fusion And Projection Of Network Intrusion Activity, Stephen Reed Byers
Theses
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) warn of suspicious or malicious network activity and are a fundamental, yet passive, defense-in-depth layer for modern networks. Prior research has applied information fusion techniques to correlate the alerts of multiple IDSs and group those belonging to the same multi-stage attack into attack tracks. Projecting the next likely step in these tracks potentially enhances an analyst’s situational awareness; however, the reliance on attack plans, complicated algorithms, or expert knowledge of the respective network is prohibitive and prone to obsolescence with the continual deployment of new technology and evolution of hacker tradecraft. This thesis presents a real-time …
Advanced Correlation-Based Character Recognition Applied To The Archimedes Palimpsest, Derek J. Walvoord
Advanced Correlation-Based Character Recognition Applied To The Archimedes Palimpsest, Derek J. Walvoord
Theses
The Archimedes Palimpsest is a manuscript containing the partial text of seven treatises by Archimedes that were copied onto parchment and bound in the tenth-century AD. This work is aimed at providing tools that allow scholars of ancient Greek mathematics to retrieve as much information as possible from images of the remaining degraded text. Acorrelation pattern recognition (CPR) system has been developed to recognize distorted versions of Greek characters in problematic regions of the palimpsest imagery, which have been obscured by damage from mold and fire, overtext, and natural aging. Feature vectors for each class of characters are constructed using …
A Comparative Analysis Of Hyperspectral Target Detection Algorithms In The Presence Of Misregistered Data, Jason T. Casey
A Comparative Analysis Of Hyperspectral Target Detection Algorithms In The Presence Of Misregistered Data, Jason T. Casey
Theses
Line scanning hyperspectral imaging systems are capable of capturing accurate spatial and spectral information about a scene. These data can be useful for detecting sub-pixel targets. Such systems, however, may be limited by certain key characteristics in their design. Systems employing multiple spectrometers, or that collect data from multiple focal planes may suffer an inherent misregistration between sets of collected spectral bands. In order to utilize the full spectrum for target detection purposes, the sets of bands must be registered to each other as precisely as possible. Perfect registration is not possible, due to both the sensor design, and variation …
On Rational Functions With Golden Ratio As Fixed Point, Edgar Gilbuena Amaca
On Rational Functions With Golden Ratio As Fixed Point, Edgar Gilbuena Amaca
Theses
The existence of an equivalence subset of rational functions with Fibonacci numbers as coefficients and the Golden Ratio as fixed point is proven. The proof is based on two theorems establishing basic relationships underlying the Fibonacci Sequence, Pascal's Triangle and the Golden Ratio. Equations from the two theorems are related to each other and seen to generate the equivalence subset of rational functions. Proof by induction on these equations constitutes the proof of the existence of this subset of rational functions. It is found that this subset of rational functions possesses interesting mathematical properties, particularly that of convergence to the …

Implementing Efficient 384-Bit Nist Elliptic Curves Over Prime Fields On An Arm946e, Tracy Vanameron
Theses
This thesis presents a performance evaluation of a 384-bit NIST elliptic curve over prime fields on a 32-bit ARM946E microprocessor running at 100-MHz. While adhering to the constraints of an embedded system, the following items were investigated to decrease computation time: the importance of the underlying finite arithmetic, the use of hardware accelerators, the use of memory options, and the use of available processor features. The elliptic curve implementation utilized existing finite arithmetic C code to interface to an AiMEC Montgomery Exponentiator Core. The exponentiator core supports modular addition, modular multiplication, and exponentiation. The finite arithmetic C code also contained …
Realistic Texture In Simulated Thermal Infrared Imagery, Jason T. Ward
Realistic Texture In Simulated Thermal Infrared Imagery, Jason T. Ward
Theses
Creating a visually-realistic yet radiometrically-accurate simulation of thermal infrared (TIR) imagery is a challenge that has plagued members of industry and academia alike. The goal of imagery simulation is to provide a practical alternative to the often staggering effort required to collect actual data. Previous attempts at simulating TIR imagery have suffered from a lack of texture—the simulated scenes generally failed to reproduce the natural variability seen in actual TIR images. Realistic synthetic TIR imagery requires modeling sources of variability including surface effects such as solar insolation and convective heat exchange as well as sub-surface effects such as density and …

Visual Agreement Of Spot Color Overprints As Displayed And As Printed, Sri Hemanth Prakhya
Theses
The spot color system has several discrepancies within it, as it lacks the support system and strong fundamental color management system that the process color system has. It has been proven that the display and print reproduction of process colors is predictable; however, for spot colors, the predictability is questionable. The intent of the thesis research is to assess the accuracy of the premedia software tools for a softproofing setup of the spot colors and their overprints. The research experiment is examined on the most available scenarios of softproofing for spot colors, under a streamlined and controlled methodology that provides …
Image Segmentation And Pigment Mapping Of Cultural Heritage Based On Spectral Imaging, Yonghui Zhao
Image Segmentation And Pigment Mapping Of Cultural Heritage Based On Spectral Imaging, Yonghui Zhao
Theses
The goal of the work reported in this dissertation is to develop methods for image segmentation and pigment mapping of paintings based on spectral imaging. To reach this goal it is necessary to achieve sufficient spectral and colorimetric accuracies of both the spectral imaging system and pigment mapping. The output is a series of spatial distributions of pigments (or pigment maps) composing a painting. With these pigment maps, the change of the color appearance of the painting can be simulated when the optical properties of one or more pigments are altered. These pigment maps will also be beneficial for enriching …

Automatic Image Registration And Defect Identification Of A Class Of Structural Artifacts In Printed Documents, Kartheek Chandu
Theses
The work in this thesis proposes a defect analysis system, which automatically aligns a digitized copy of a printed output to a reference electronic original and highlights image defects. We focus on a class of image defects or artifacts caused by shortfalls in the mechanical or electro-photographic processes that include spots, deletions and debris missing deletions. The algorithm begins with image registration performed using a logpolar transformation and mutual information techniques. A confidence map is then calculated by comparing the contrast and entropy in the neighborhood of each pixel in both the printed document and corresponding electronic original. This results …

Theses
Cryptographic algorithms which take into account requirements for varying levels of security and reduced power consumption in embedded devices are now receiving additional attention. The NTRUEncrypt algorithm has been shown to provide certain advantages when designing low power and resource constrained systems, while still providing comparable security levels to higher complexity algorithms. The research presented in this thesis starts with an examination of the general NTRUEncrypt system, followed by a more practical examination with respect to the IEEE 1363.1 draft standard. In contrast to previous research, the focus is shifted away from specific optimizations but rather provides a study of …
Subthreshold Circuits: Design, Implementation And Application, Hrishikesh Kanitkar
Subthreshold Circuits: Design, Implementation And Application, Hrishikesh Kanitkar
Theses
Digital circuits operating in the subthreshold region of the transistor are being used as an ideal option for ultra low power complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) design. The use of subthreshold circuit design in cryptographic systems is gaining importance as a counter measure to power analysis attacks. A power analysis attack is a non-invasive side channel attack in which the power consumption of the cryptographic system can be analyzed to retrieve the encrypted data. A number of techniques to increase the resistance to power attacks have been proposed at algorithmic and hardware levels, but these techniques suffer from large area and power …
Mixing Of Nanoparticles In A Stirred Tank In High Pressure Carbon Dioxide, Nitin Aggarwal
Mixing Of Nanoparticles In A Stirred Tank In High Pressure Carbon Dioxide, Nitin Aggarwal
Theses
Mixing of nanoparticles of different compositions offers wide opportunities in manufacturing new nanocomposite materials with unique electronic, optical, mechanical, and chemical properties. However, due to large cohesive forces between nanoparticles, they often form large micron-sized agglomerates, thus losing their main advantage of small size and high surface area. Therefore, breaking of these agglomerates is necessary prior to mixing. One of the techniques to achieve deagglomeration and mixing of nanoparticles is based on rapid depressurization/expansion of supercritical suspensions. where the suspension of initially premixed agglomerates in supercritical CO2 pass through the nozzle undergoing deagglomeration as a result of rapid expansion …

Mapping Inter-Subject And Inter-Regional Brain Connectivity During Free Viewing Of Novel Natural Scenes, Sheela Nagaraj
Mapping Inter-Subject And Inter-Regional Brain Connectivity During Free Viewing Of Novel Natural Scenes, Sheela Nagaraj
Theses
Traditional functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have used controlled tasks such as finger tapping to isolate function in distinct cortical. Recent studies have examined the mechanisms involved during natural conditions by asking subjects to freely view the presentation of a movie. The objective of our study was to further observe the extent to which similarities are present between subjects during natural vision. It was hypothesized that there would be a linear relationship between the percentage of region-specific overlap, which is the percent of the anatomical region of interest which contains spatial activation exhibited by all six subjects, and corresponding …
Finger Joint Impedance Control Applications To Investigate Spasticity, David Naisby Paglia
Finger Joint Impedance Control Applications To Investigate Spasticity, David Naisby Paglia
Theses
In order to investigate how spasticity disrupts the capabilities of the human body, a better understanding of how joint impedance control operates in healthy individuals is necessary. In this investigation, a second order rotary torque model was implemented to investigate the impedances at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the index finger. The model was fit to approximately 25 milliseconds of force and displacement data to determine the mechanical impedances at the finger tip. Ranges of damping and stiffness were optimized over a range of mean finger tip force (0-12 N) for extension. The equilibrium-point hypothesis was examined when compared to …
Dexamethasone- And Age-Sensitive Genes In Neonatal Small Intestine, Carla Cerqueira
Dexamethasone- And Age-Sensitive Genes In Neonatal Small Intestine, Carla Cerqueira
Theses
Regulation of GLUT5 is dependent on the presence of its substrate, fructose, but it is also correlated with the developmental (aging) process of the intestine. To identify fructose-responsive genes whose expression also changes with age, intestines of 10 and 20 d old pups were perfused, by Ferraris et al., with fructose and then compared by microarray analysis. From this, a gene clustering analysis revealed that some age- and fructose-specific genes are regulated by corticosterones, which normally increase in pups ≥ 14 d old. Subsequent work indicated that priming the gut with Dexamethasone (Dex, a glucocorticoid analog) allowed fructose to precociously …
