The Relationship Between Human Beings And Nature, Donghee Woo Feb 2009

The Relationship Between Human Beings And Nature, Donghee Woo

Theses

The symbolic value of art helps me as a metal artist to depict the relation between human beings and nature. Humans have created a culture and a world but this world appears to coldly separate itself from its surroundings. Life continues to assert its will on human creation; plants sprout amongst concrete and steel environments. The composite shape of my sculptures and thesis help me to present a contemporary perspective on this issue.

Development And Modeling Of A Low Temperature Thin-Film Cmos On Glass, Robert G. Manley Feb 2009

Development And Modeling Of A Low Temperature Thin-Film Cmos On Glass, Robert G. Manley

Theses

The push to develop integrated systems using thin-film transistors (TFT) on insulating substrates (i.e. glass) has always been limited due to low-mobility semiconducting films such as amorphous and polycrystalline silicon. Corning Incorporated is developing a new substrate material known as silicon-on-glass (SiOG). It is intrinsically better than amorphous and polycrystalline silicon materials due to its single crystal nature of the silicon film. This however does not mitigate the challenges associated with low temperature CMOS process and fabrication. The first generation of TFTs fabricated at RIT showed the potential of SiOG as a viable substrate material, but were plagued by considerable …

In Silico Drug Design Of Potential Novel Anti Malarial Agents, Vishal Thovarai Feb 2009

In Silico Drug Design Of Potential Novel Anti Malarial Agents, Vishal Thovarai

Theses

This thesis project incorporates the principles of rational and computer aided drug design in the quest for an improved anti-malarial agent. The target, a pathway for isoprenoid biosynthesis (the deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate (DOXP) pathway) occurs in the parasite plastid – the apicoplast, and among the factors that make it an excellent target for an anti-malarial agent is its uniqueness from the pathway in the host, thus accounting for its specificity and low toxicity. A library of 18 potential anti malarial analogues/ ligands were designed and tested in silico against the receptor using molecular docking. The analogue L ο (omicron) - {3-[acetyl(hydroxy)amino]-1-hydroxypropyl} phosphonic …

Direct Occlusion Handling For High Level Image Processing Algorithms, Carl Ryan Kelso Feb 2009

Direct Occlusion Handling For High Level Image Processing Algorithms, Carl Ryan Kelso

Theses

Many high-level computer vision algorithms suffer in the presence of occlusions caused by multiple objects overlapping in a view. Occlusions remove the direct correspondence between visible areas of objects and the objects themselves by introducing ambiguity in the interpretation of the shape of the occluded object. Ignoring this ambiguity allows the perceived geometry of overlapping objects to be deformed or even fractured. Supplementing the raw image data with a vectorized structural representation which predicts object completions could stabilize high-level algorithms which currently disregard occlusions. Studies in the neuroscience community indicate that the feature points located at the intersection of junctions …

Face Recognition With Variation In Pose Angle Using Face Graphs, Sooraj Kumar Feb 2009

Face Recognition With Variation In Pose Angle Using Face Graphs, Sooraj Kumar

Theses

Automatic recognition of human faces is an important and growing field. Several real-world applications have started to rely on the accuracy of computer-based face recognition systems for their own performance in terms of efficiency, safety and reliability. Many algorithms have already been established in terms of frontal face recognition, where the person to be recognized is looking directly at the camera. More recently, methods for non-frontal face recognition have been proposed. These include work related to 3D rigid face models, component-based 3D morphable models, eigenfaces and elastic bunched graph matching (EBGM). This thesis extends recognition algorithm based on EBGM to …

Scalable Ray Tracing With Multiple Gpgpus, Rodrigo A. Urra Feb 2009

Scalable Ray Tracing With Multiple Gpgpus, Rodrigo A. Urra

Theses

Rapid development in the field of computer graphics over the last 40 years has brought forth different techniques to render scenes. Rasterization is today’s most widely used technique, which in its most basic form sequentially draws thousands of polygons and applies texture on them. Ray tracing is an alternative method that mimics light transport by using rays to sample a scene in memory and render the color found at each ray’s scene intersection point. Although mainstream hardware directly supports rasterization, ray tracing would be the preferred technique due to its ability to produce highly crisp and realistic graphics, if hardware …

Sustainable Site Remediation : A Life Cycle Assessment Approach, Harnoor Dhaliwal Jan 2009

Sustainable Site Remediation : A Life Cycle Assessment Approach, Harnoor Dhaliwal

Theses

Remediation of contaminated areas is often a resource-intensive activity that itself can create environmental burdens. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used as a tool to examine the environmental impacts associated with remediation activities. A hypothetical contaminated site with five remediation alternatives was developed for this analysis. The results of Life cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) indicated that greater site activity in terms of transportation, material and equipment use translated into higher environmental impacts.

A sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the environmental impacts further in different time horizons. The results showed that choice of time horizon can have a significant effect …

Study And Development Of Ultrasound Monitoring Of Skeletal Defects, Kavil Patel Jan 2009

Study And Development Of Ultrasound Monitoring Of Skeletal Defects, Kavil Patel

Theses

Fatigue fractures are fine disruptions of normal bone architecture whose identification is often unreliable or difficult using x-rays (Robinson, Wilson et al.; Kundel 2004; Swischuk and Hernandez 2004). A fatigue fracture results from the application of abnormal loads to a bone with normal elastic resistance and is associated with new or different activity, and strenuous or repeated activity. The feasibility of using ultrasound to detect and monitor fatigue fractures and other structural damage in bone was established in this study.

The use of Low Transient Pulse (LTP) technology to drive the ultrasound transducers proved to enhance detection resolution and quality …

Road-Based Proactive Routing Protocols For Vehicular Networks, Neeraj Mahadevrao Rajgure Jan 2009

Road-Based Proactive Routing Protocols For Vehicular Networks, Neeraj Mahadevrao Rajgure

Theses

Vehicular networks are formed by vehicles communicating in an ad hoc manner or through cellular and IEEE 802.11 base stations. Routing in vehicular networks is challenging due to highly dynamic network topologies. Previous research done at the UbiNetS lab at NJIT has proposed the idea of Road-Based using Vehicular Traffic information (RBVT) routing. In RBVT, routes are sequences of road intersections, and geographical forwarding is used for sending packets between the intersections.

This thesis proposes two proactive RBVT protocols (RBVT-P and RBVT-PS) for city-based Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs). RBVT-P is a completely distributed protocol that unicasts connectivity packets in …

Rna Secondary Structure Detection Programs With An Emphasis On Covariance Models, Justin Slotman Jan 2009

Rna Secondary Structure Detection Programs With An Emphasis On Covariance Models, Justin Slotman

Theses

RNA secondary structure prediction requires a different approach from traditional alignment methods. Functional RNAs often have their secondary structure better conserved than their primary structure. Covariance models, probabilistic models that utilize stochastic-context-free grammars, are one approach. CMs allow for homology to be detected where purely sequence-based methods would fail. A background on CMs is given, as well as a background of the major classes of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). Comparisons are made between some CM-using tools (the Infernal suite and CMfinder) and some other RNA secondary structure tools (CARNAC, miRNAminer, Pfold, Mfold) as well as between Infernal and the primary alignment …

A New Covert Channel Over Rtp, Christopher Forbes Jan 2009

A New Covert Channel Over Rtp, Christopher Forbes

Theses

In this thesis, we designed and implemented a new covert channel over the RTP protocol. The covert channel modifies the timestamp value in the RTP header to send its secret messages. The high frequency of RTP packets allows for a high bitrate covert channel, theoretically up to 350 bps. The broad use of RTP for multimedia applications, including VoIP, provides plentiful opportunities to use this channel. By using the RTP header, many of the challenges present for covert channels using the RTP payload are avoided. Using the reference implementation of this covert channel, bitrates of up to 325 bps were …

Ultrafast Carrier Dynamics Of An Inas/Gaas Semiconductor Quantum Dot Absorber, Gillian Emma Madden Jan 2009

Ultrafast Carrier Dynamics Of An Inas/Gaas Semiconductor Quantum Dot Absorber, Gillian Emma Madden

Theses

High-speed semiconductor quantum dot saturable absorbers have dramatically improved lasers to generate ultrafast optical pulses with a diverse range of applications. The carrier escape and relaxation dynamics of an InAs/GaAs quantum dot absorber waveguide were investigated using a heterodyne pump-probe spectroscopy technique. The measurements of the absorption recovery of the quantum dot waveguide were performed under applied reverse bias utilising both single-colour and two-colour pump probe spectroscopy. The study revealed differences in the intradot relaxation dynamics related to the initial population of the ground state or the excited state of the quantum dots. It was concluded that phonon mediated recovery …

Application Of Multiple Mass Spectrometric Techniques In The Isolation, Determination And Characterisation Of The Marine Toxins; Azaspiracid, Keith O'Callaghan Jan 2009

Application Of Multiple Mass Spectrometric Techniques In The Isolation, Determination And Characterisation Of The Marine Toxins; Azaspiracid, Keith O'Callaghan

Theses

The Azaspiracids are a class of polyether marine biotoxins that present a significant health risk to consumers of shellfish. Since their discovery in the late 1990s several human intoxications have been reported, and traced to Irish shellfish farms resulting in closures or harvest rejections. As such incidents involving azaspiracid shellfish poisoning have a major socio-economic impact on communities that rely on shellfish farming revenues.

Recent evidence suggests that azaspiracid poisoning events may become more commonplace. With this increased risk the understanding of azaspiracids mode of action and biological targets becomes crucial. To support these endeavours effective analytical methods need to …

Manipulation Tools For Laser-Cooled Rubidium Atoms : Ultrathin Optical Fibres And Magnetic Diffraction Gratings / Michael J. Morrissey., Michael J. Morrissey

Theses

This thesis describes the construction and characterisation of a standard six-beam configuration magneto-optical trap (MOT) used to cool and trap neutral 85Rb atoms. This system is capable of producing a cloud of ~108 atoms whose average temperature is in the sub-Doppler range. The fabrication process for the production of subwavelength tapered optical nanofibres (TONFs) is also described, as well as their guiding properties. These have many proposed applications in the field of cold atoms. However, significant technical progress must be made before many of these applications can be realised. The objective of the research work was to combine …

Automated Network Planning For Industrial Ethernet Networks, Holger Machens Jan 2009

Automated Network Planning For Industrial Ethernet Networks, Holger Machens

Theses

Engineers usually use computer aided methods to ease the increasingly complex planning task of automation plants. One such computer aided method for automated planning of Industrial Ethernet networks under given network QoS requirements is presented in this thesis. The method is based on partitioning the given set of network nodes according to specified communication relationships between the nodes, thereby creating subsets of nodes which are joined using given networking algorithms. Several networking algorithms may be applicable for each subset of nodes and any complete solution is a combination of several partial solutions, one for each subset of nodes. Enumeration through …

Characterisation Of Immunosensor Surfaces Using Scanning Force Microscopy, Eva Maria Gil Romero Jan 2009

Characterisation Of Immunosensor Surfaces Using Scanning Force Microscopy, Eva Maria Gil Romero

Theses

The overall aim of this thesis was twofold. Firstly, to evaluate how scanning force microscopy (SFM) could be used to characterise the surfaces of immunosensors. Four aspects of immunosensor characteristics where SFM has particular application potential have been identified: (a) immobilisation chemistry and (b) the surface density, (c) orientation and (d) specificity of the immobilised antibodies. Secondly, to examine experimentally how the Explorer SFM instrument could be used for such characterisation.

The Explorer SFM instrument is of an open-loop actuator design that is exposed to the intrinsic inadequacies of piezoelectric actuators. In this regard, careful calibration has shown that achieving …

Investigation Into The Glazing Sector Of The Construction Industry In The Cork Region: To Identify The Main Criteria Used In The Window And Glazing Selection Process, Michael A. Mc Avoy

Theses

The selection of glazing and windows is an important element in the architecture of a building in terms of both aesthetics and practicality. Other related issues include sustainability, and the potential effects of glazing selection on the environment. It is essential that glazing experts contribute to the design process at an early stage in order to maximise the efficiency of the windows while still allowing architects to create their visions and unique buildings. This study focuses on the current systems used in the window selection process for the Cork region, and will propose changes based on the findings of the …

Smart Heating Systems For Green Homes, Cheryl Carmody Jan 2009

Smart Heating Systems For Green Homes, Cheryl Carmody

Theses

The focus of this research is to design an improved heating control system for a class of older energy inefficient dwelling to produce an improved living environment. Prerequisites for such control are sensors and models. Commercial sensor nodes enabled a multi-zone heating system to be considered. While the accompanying sensor node software was functional, it was not suitable for real-time control and was modified to achieve same. Once a prototype was developed and tested in the laboratory, it was deployed to a two-story residential dwelling in Cork city.

The requisite mathematical models describe the heat transfer characteristics for a particular …

Characterization Of Gaseous Oxygen And Methane Injectors Under High Pressure Combustion, Ryan Saffell Jan 2009

Characterization Of Gaseous Oxygen And Methane Injectors Under High Pressure Combustion, Ryan Saffell

Theses

A program to examine and characterize two types of coaxial injectors and two types of screw swirl injectors in a small-scale rocket engine using gaseous oxygen and gaseous methane as main propellants has been developed. The mixing efficiency of this gas-gas scheme was evaluated by measuring the combustion efficiency at various characteristic chamber lengths, which allowed assessment of combustion stability of the system, and by changing parameters such as chamber pressure, mixture ratio, and injector post recess. Combustion efficiency for the shear coaxial element increased about 5% with chamber pressure and oxygen post recess. The shear coaxial injector combustion efficiency …

Computational Analysis Of Ultraviolet Reactors, Xiang Li Jan 2009

Theses

Disinfection of water treatment using ultraviolet (UV) light has received wide recognition as an important contribution to the protection of public health. To ensure a UV disinfection system that can deliver the required UV dose, analytical and numerical methods have been used to evaluate the flow field of the UV reactor. A Multiple Point Source Summation (MPSS) method was used to estimate the radiation intensity field, with the utilization of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. To couple the analytical model with numerical simulations, a user friendly interface software was developed to calculate the UV dosage distribution. In addition a UV …

Modeling Problems In Mucus Viscoelasticity And Mucociliary Clearance, Michael M. Norton Jan 2009

Modeling Problems In Mucus Viscoelasticity And Mucociliary Clearance, Michael M. Norton

Theses

From the common cold and allergies to severe chronic and acute respiratory impairments, the function of the body's mucociliary clearance mechanism plays a primary defense role. Mucus demonstrates numerous non-Newtonian behaviors which set it apart from viscous fluids. Among them: Bingham plastic behavior, shear-thinning, and elasticity on short time scales due to relaxation time. Experimental evidence suggests that certain rheologies promote effective transport. In an effort to reveal the mechanisms controlling transport, models are developed. Firstly, a steady state model which idealizes the mucus as a rigid body is created in order to bring together disparate bodies of experimental work …

Hierarchical Task Allocation In Robotic Exploration, John Hawley Jan 2009

Hierarchical Task Allocation In Robotic Exploration, John Hawley

Theses

Autonomous robotic exploration has long been a topic of interest in robotics research. Robotic exploration promises the ability to explore otherwise unreachable or hostile environments. Autonomous exploration is particularly useful in distant or hostile environments in which real-time communication with a human controller may not be practical, such as deep sea or planetary exploration. In order to more effectively explore a large unknown area, multiple robots may be employed to work cooperatively. While cooperation among multiple robots allows for increased exploration potential, it also entails significantly more complex planning. This complex planning involves allocation of exploration tasks to the robots …

Improving Dodgson Scoring Techniques, Jason A. Covey Jan 2009

Improving Dodgson Scoring Techniques, Jason A. Covey

Theses

The Dodgson score problem is part of the Dodgson election scheme invented by Charles Dodgson and presented in his manuscript. One of the system's strengths (and motivations for its study) is that it satisfies the Condorcet criterion (which states that any candidate who defeats all other candidates in pairwise elections will be declared the winner). It is unfortunate, though, that in a given election no Condorcet winner may exist. Dodgson's election system chooses the winner "closest" to being the Condorcet winner in the sense that it requires the shortest sequence of edits (swapping of adjacent candidates in the voters' preference …

A Middleware For True Mobile Agents In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ciarán Lynch Jan 2009

A Middleware For True Mobile Agents In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ciarán Lynch

Theses

The application space of wireless sensor networks has evolved considerably from their initial role as an efficient data gathering system. Modern wireless sensor networks are expected to be dynamic, powerful. reliable and flexible, while continuing to operate efficiently and autonomously. The supporting software' systems have not kept pace with this development, and currently limits the deployment of complex and robust applications. Mobile software agents present a powerful approach to application design, however no existing middleware for wireless sensor networks supports native mobile software agents.

The main contribution of the work presented in this thesis is the development and evaluation of …
