Optimal Economic Planning And Control For The Management Of Ecosystems, Kevin Macksamie
Optimal Economic Planning And Control For The Management Of Ecosystems, Kevin Macksamie
Theses
In recent years the interest on sustainable systems has increased significantly. Among the many interested problems, creating and restoring sustainable ecosystems is a challenging and complex problem. One of the fundamental problems within this area is the imbalance between species that have a predator-prey relationship. Solutions involving management have become an integral player in many environments. Management systems typically use ad hoc methods to develop harvesting policies to control the populations of species to desired numbers. In order to amalgamate intelligence and structure, ecological systems require a diverse research effort from three primary fields: ecology, economics, and control theory. In …
Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration For Pipelined Digital Systems— A Case Study Using A Color Space Conversion Engine, Ryan Toukatly
Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration For Pipelined Digital Systems— A Case Study Using A Color Space Conversion Engine, Ryan Toukatly
Theses
In digital hardware design, reconfigurable devices such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) allow for a unique feature called partial reconfiguration PR). This refers to the reprogramming of a subset of the reconfigurable logic during active operation. PR allows multiple hardware blocks to be consolidated into a single partition, which can be reprogrammed at run-time as desired. This may reduce the logic circuit (and silicon area) requirements and greatly extend functionality. Furthermore, dynamic partial reconfiguration (DPR) refers to PR that does not halt the system during reprogramming. This allows for configuration to overlap with normal processing, potentially achieving better system …
Thermal Conductivity Enhancement In Nanofluids -Mathematical Model, Anand Natchimuthu Chinnaraj
Thermal Conductivity Enhancement In Nanofluids -Mathematical Model, Anand Natchimuthu Chinnaraj
Theses
The study on developing a mathematical model for thermal conductivity enhancement in nanofluids was based on formation of nanoparticles into nanoclusters, nanolayer thickness, Brownian motion and volume fraction of nanoclusters. An equation for the thermal conductivity of nanofluids was developed. The expression developed successfully explained the enhanced thermal conductivity of nanofluids and led to some important conclusions. It was found that in this study the nanoparticles tend to form nanoclusters and the volume fraction of the nanoclusters and the trapped fluid in the nanocluster was contributing to the overall thermal conductivity enhancement. Various types of cluster formation was analyzed and …
Using Mathematical Models In The Hotel Industry: Maximizing Revenues Through Discount Strategies, Karin Meuwissen
Using Mathematical Models In The Hotel Industry: Maximizing Revenues Through Discount Strategies, Karin Meuwissen
Theses
Mathematical modeling is an effective tool when maximizing revenue in hotels. With over 120,000 different combinations of variables and elements to consider when maximizing revenue, the process of finding the most lucrative combination can be time consuming and costly to hotels. An effective mathematical model assists in reducing the guesswork involved. This study will demonstrate how the implementation of discounts reduces revenue loss by forcing pre-payment and increasing occupancy levels. In an effort to reduce revenue loss, hotels have implemented many strategies such as using credit card guarantees, demanding pre-payment, and offering discounts, all of which are used to reduce …
A Computational Flow Model Of Oxygen And Nitric Oxide Transport & Reactions And The Relation With Glaucoma, Lukas Holsen
A Computational Flow Model Of Oxygen And Nitric Oxide Transport & Reactions And The Relation With Glaucoma, Lukas Holsen
Theses
The purpose of this project is to create a computational model of a precapillary arteriole network near the optic nerve head (ONH) using computational fluid dynamics modeling (CFD, Fluent, ANSYS, Inc.). The CFD analysis will contain a blood flow model coupled with oxygen (O2) and nitric oxide (NO) transport and reactions. Until recently it was believed that elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) was causal in glaucoma, however recent studies demonstrate that glaucoma is associated with sensitivity to IOP itself. Because of this insight, other mechanisms besides mechanical damage that could cause glaucomatous neurodegeneration need to be explored, such as alterations in …
Parallel Implementation Of Maximum Parsimony Search Algorithm On Multicore Cpus, Andrew Darling
Parallel Implementation Of Maximum Parsimony Search Algorithm On Multicore Cpus, Andrew Darling
Theses
Phylogenetics is the study of the evolutionary relationships among species. It is derived from the ancient greek words, phylon meaning "race", and genetikos, meaning "relative to birth". An important methodology in phylogenetics is a cladistics methodology (parsimony) applied to the study of taxonomic classification. Modern study includes as source data aspects of molecular biology, such as the DNA sequence of homologous (orthologous) genes. The algorithms used attempt to reconstruct evolutionary relationships in the form of phylogenetic trees, based on the available morphological data, behavioral data, and usually DNA sequence data (Fitch W. M., 1971). The topic of this thesis is …

Part 1: Size-Independent Quantification Of Ligand Binding Site Depth In Receptor Proteins. Part 2: Representing Rod-Shaped Protein 3d Structures In Cylindrical Coordinates, Srujana Cheguri
Theses
Abstract 1 We have developed a web server that implements the two complementary methods to quantify the depth of ligand and/or ligand binding site (LBS) in a protein-ligand complex. The two methods are the `secant plane' (SP) and the `tangent sphere' (TS) methods. In the SP and TS methods, the protein molecular centroid (global centroid, GC), and the LBS centroid (local centroid, LC) are first determined. The SP is defined as the plane passing through the LBS centroid and normal to the line passing through the LC and the protein molecular centroid. The "exterior side" of the SP is the …
Characterizing Adaptive Capacity To Climate Change In Developing Countries: A Case Study On Peru, Rosa Mitsumasu Heredia
Characterizing Adaptive Capacity To Climate Change In Developing Countries: A Case Study On Peru, Rosa Mitsumasu Heredia
Theses
Climate change is expected to impact biodiversity, global temperatures and the water cycle resulting in changes that affect communities in the social system. The capacity to adapt to such climatic fluctuations will vary across social groups, depending on the group's socio-economic and demographic characteristics. This thesis constructs a methodology that bridges existing approaches to study adaptation, providing an alternative that includes high level deterministic approaches to quantify adaptive capacity (AC) and case-by-case strategies to enhance region-specific AC. The proposed methodology consists of an exploratory model and a principal component analysis. The goal of the methodology is to create a sub-national …
Environmental Impact Comparison Of Distributed And Centralized Manufacturing Scenarios, Lionel Senyana
Environmental Impact Comparison Of Distributed And Centralized Manufacturing Scenarios, Lionel Senyana
Theses
Centralized manufacturing and distributed manufacturing are two fundamentally different methods for producing components. This work describes a centralized manufacturing scenario in which parts are produced via forging and finish machining at one central location and are then shipped to the end user. The distributed manufacturing model involves a scenario in which an additive manufacturing process (Electron Beam Melting) is used to produce parts to near net shape with minimal finish machining. Because the process doesn't require molds or dies, production can take place in small production quantities "on demand" at job shops located close to the end user with little …
Parathyroid Hormone And Cell Signaling In Bone Remodeling, Christina Battista
Parathyroid Hormone And Cell Signaling In Bone Remodeling, Christina Battista
Theses
Many mathematical models relevant to osteoporosis have been developed and studied. Although osteoclasts and osteoblasts are the crucial variables in bone resorption and bone formation, PTH can cause changes in the ratio of these cells and therefore should be studied more closely. Some of the current models for osteoporosis will be analyzed in this thesis as well as amended to account for the phenomenon that occurs with various methods of PTH administration. By administering PTH in either pulsatile or continuous doses, we obtain very different results. When administered in a continuous fashion, the body experiences a net bone loss over …
Design Of Passive Suspension System With Non-Linear Springs Using B-Spline Collocation Method, Rahul Jhaveri
Design Of Passive Suspension System With Non-Linear Springs Using B-Spline Collocation Method, Rahul Jhaveri
Theses
The issue of vibration isolation challenges engineers' designs across the engineering spectrum. From an engineering standpoint, vibration control impacts the fields of transportation, manufacturing, construction and mechanical design. Dynamic systems produce vibrations for various reasons i.e. rotating unbalanced masses (high speed turbines); inertia of reciprocating components (internal combustion engines); irregular rolling contact (automobiles) or induced eddy current (locomotives) vibrations. In most cases, vibrations cause only physical discomfort and/or loss of accuracy. But in extreme cases, transmitted forces may cause a body to undergo high amplitude resonant vibrations, leading to high cyclic stresses and imminent fatigue failure resulting in a catastrophic …
Event Horizons, Gravitational Waves And Astrophysical Kicks In Black-Hole Spacetimes, J. Marcelo Ponce Castro
Event Horizons, Gravitational Waves And Astrophysical Kicks In Black-Hole Spacetimes, J. Marcelo Ponce Castro
Theses
In this thesis we use computational techniques (numerical simulations) to study different stages of black hole mergers. A first project describes topological properties of the main performer of this play, the black hole and its event horizon. We investigate three configurations: a continuum ring singularity, a 'discretized' ring (black holes arranged on a ring), and a linear distribution of black holes. We evolve each of the corresponding spacetimes forward and then backwards in time, searching for the respective event horizons. We find some evidence, based on configurations of multiple BHs arranged in a ring, that this configuration leads to singular …
Photon Manipulation In Silicon Nanophotonic Circuits, Ali Elshaari
Photon Manipulation In Silicon Nanophotonic Circuits, Ali Elshaari
Theses
Quantum-based communication systems can potentially achieve the ultimate security from eavesdropping and greatly reduce the operating powers on chip. Light-speed transmission, noise immunity, and low noise properties make photons indispensable for quantum communication to transfer a quantum state through a transmission line. Furthermore, the field of silicon nanophotonics is fast growing field which is driven by the attractive and promising improvements it has to offer in high speed communication systems and on chip optical interconnects. Consequently, there is a high demand to develop the building blocks for photon manipulation in silicon nanophotonic circuits. The goal of the work is to …
An Economic Approach To The Ecological Issues Of Urban Stormwater Runoff: A Case Study Of The Allen Creek Watershed In Monroe County, New York, Kelly Hellman
Theses
Urban stormwater runoff is excess runoff created by increased imperviousness in an urbanized watershed and can have significant impacts on both water quantity and quality. Natural communities and human communities are faced with damages that occur as a result of the change in the type and magnitude of stormwater runoff flows, including but not limited to increased flooding and degradation of natural aquatic systems. Therefore, from both an economic and ecological perspective, it is important that urban planners effectively manage excess stormwater runoff. This paper details the development of an ecological-economic model that can be used to guide urban planners …
A Search For Mri Diffusion Coefficient Standards, Hongmei Yuan
A Search For Mri Diffusion Coefficient Standards, Hongmei Yuan
Theses
Diffusion coefficients (D) can be readily measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) instruments. Operators of these instruments often utilize standards with known diffusion coefficients to rapidly and conveniently test the performance of the NMR or MRI system to measure diffusion. A variety of these standards have been proposed in the scientific literature. This thesis describes a diffusion standard based on water constrained by container geometry, specifically water between tightly packed, parallel glass fiber filaments. The restricted diffusion of water in this environment gives a diffusion coefficient which is selectable by the choice of data …
Brownian Motion And Its Applications In Financial Mathematics, Vidyesh Vadhavkar
Brownian Motion And Its Applications In Financial Mathematics, Vidyesh Vadhavkar
Theses
Brownian Motion is one of the most useful tools in the arsenal of stochastic models. This phenomenon, named after the English botanist Robert Brown, was originally observed as the irregular motion exhibited by a small particle which is totally immersed in a liquid or gas. Since then it has been applied effectively in such areas as statistical goodness of fi t, analyzing stock price levels and quantum mechanics. In 1905, Albert Einstein first explained the phenomenon by assuming that such an immersed particle was continually being bombarded by the molecules in the surrounding medium. The mathematical theory of this important …

Prototype Software For Colorant Formulation Using Gamblin Conservation Colors, Marissa Haddock
Theses
When selecting pigments from a large set for restorative inpainting, it can often be challenging to create a mixture that will provide an exact match to the original artwork under a range of viewing and illumination conditions. In this research, a prototype computer program was developed that will aid the user by providing a color match and paint recipe that exhibits minimal metamerism when compared to the original artwork. The Gamblin Conservation Colors, a set of 43 colorants specially formulated for inpainting, were characterized in terms of their optical properties, absorption and scattering, according to Kubelka-Munk turbid media theory. Formulations …
The "Human Mental State Multiple Realizability In Silicon Thesis" Is False: An Argument Against Computational Theories Of Consciousness, Matthew Stuart Piper
The "Human Mental State Multiple Realizability In Silicon Thesis" Is False: An Argument Against Computational Theories Of Consciousness, Matthew Stuart Piper
Theses
In this paper, I argue that all computational theories of consciousness (CTCs) fail. CTCs hold that the right kind of computation is sufficient for the instantiation of consciousness. Given the widely-recognized importance of his work, I will use David J. Chalmers’ Thesis of Computational Sufficiency as a paradigm case. I will argue that it fails for a reason that can be formalized as a general problem plaguing any CTC: the medium-independent properties (MIPs) constitutive of computational processes are insufficient to instantiate the medium-dependent properties (MDPs) constitutive of consciousness. MIPs, like graphemes, are properties whose causal role (e.g., symbolic meaning) does …
A Dynamic Inventory Optimization Method Applied To Printer Fleet Management, Surya Saripalli
A Dynamic Inventory Optimization Method Applied To Printer Fleet Management, Surya Saripalli
Theses
Current optimization methods for inventory management of toner cartridges for printer fleets typically focus on aggregate cartridge demand. However, with the development of printer technology, toner consumption algorithms are being developed which can accurately quantify the amount of toner that has been consumed over time, based on print job characteristics. This research introduces a dynamic inventory optimization approach for a fleet of printers over a rolling time horizon. Given, the consumption algorithm for the printer system, the cumulative toner consumed per cartridge per printer can be tracked. A forecasting method is developed which utilizes this toner consumption data for individual …

Six kanseis/feelings elicited by phones were determined to be important to this group: (1) Attractive, (2) Cool, (3) Durable, (4) Ergonomic, (5) Modern, and (6) User-friendly. A (generic) phone with a rectangular shape, comprised mostly of …
Proximal Point Methods For Inverse Problems, Marc Paulhamus
Proximal Point Methods For Inverse Problems, Marc Paulhamus
Theses
Numerous mathematical models in applied mathematics can be expressed as a partial differential equation involving certain coefficients. These coefficients are known and they describe some physical properties of the model. The direct problem in this context is to solve the partial differential equation. By contrast, an inverse problem asks for the identification of the variable coefficients when a certain measurement of a solution of the partial differential equation is available. One of the most commonly used approaches for solving this inverse problem is by posing a constrained minimization problem which can be written as a variational inequality. This paper investigates …

Modeling Pressure Drop Of Two-Phase Gas/Liquid Flow In Pem Fuel Cell Channels, Michael Grimm
Theses
Modern energy concerns have resulted in the necessity to create and understand alternative energy sources and develop systems to effectively utilize them. One such source is hydrogen, which can be utilized in a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). This fuel cell has moved to the forefront for adaptability to the automotive industry. With this increased prominence the understanding of two-phase flow phenomena within the anode and cathode channels is needed. Much research has been performed in the area of two-phase flow within macro, mini, and micro-channels of both circular and rectangular cross-sections. However previous research has been performed with …

Water quality has been an issue of concern since the settlement of man and continues to be of great concern today in many locations around the world. In the United States, to address the issues of water pollution, the U.S. Congress passed the Clean Water Act (CWA) in 1972. This study examines the implementation and prioritization of impaired water bodies listed on the Illinois CWA section 303(d) list between 1992 and 2004. This study used the Delphi survey method to obtain opinions from water quality/management experts that reside in the state of Illinois. The goal of this study was to …
Tunable Micro-Electro Mechanical Fabry Perot Etalon, Annette Rivas
Tunable Micro-Electro Mechanical Fabry Perot Etalon, Annette Rivas
Theses
Many different devices capable of spectral wavelength collection exist. The device we propose is an array of individually tunable MEMS Fabry Perot etalons capable of scanning from 400nm to 750nm as commanded. Typically when Fabry Perot devices are used additional etalons are placed in series to reject extra modes that would otherwise be passed by a single etalon. The device that is examined rejects the extra modes without the need for an extensive filtering scheme because the optical path length is held to ½ wavelength. The device proposed is thermally actuated. It has been modeled in COMSOL and shows even …
