Recursive Model Selection For Gnss-Combined Precise Point Positioning Algorithms, Andrew Tollefson Dec 2015

Recursive Model Selection For Gnss-Combined Precise Point Positioning Algorithms, Andrew Tollefson

Theses

The accuracy of Global Positioning algorithms can be improved by incorporating observations from the satellites of multiple Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). To best utilize these observations, inter-system biases must be modeled. A unified observational model is proposed which accounts for these factors for an arbitrary number of GNSS. The Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) may be imposed upon the unified model to balance data-fitting degree with model complexity among candidate models for a given satellite configuration scenario. A simple formulation is derived for the change to the Weighted Sum Squared Residuals (WSSR) outcome caused by modifying the least-squares design matrix …

A Generalized Model Of Cognitive Workload, Taylor Carpenter Dec 2015

A Generalized Model Of Cognitive Workload, Taylor Carpenter

Theses

Numerous catastrophic accidents have been the result of human operators making poor judgement calls stemming from suboptimal decision making. This suboptimal decision making, in many cases, arises when an operator is either in a high cognitive workload state, overwhelmed with information leading to a greater chance of missing an important detail, or in a low cognitive workload state, distracted and overall not paying attention to the task at hand. If the cognitive workload of an individual can be properly monitored, suboptimal operator conditions can be recognized or prevented, reducing the chance of an accident. While previous research has led to …

The first step in monitoring an observer’s eye gaze is identifying and locating the image of their pupils in video recordings of their eyes. Current systems work under a range of conditions, but fail in bright sunlight and rapidly varying illumination. A computer vision system was developed to assist with the recognition of the pupil in every frame of a video, in spite of the presence of strong first-surface reflections off of the cornea. A modified Hough Circle detector was developed that incorporates knowledge that the pupil is darker than the surrounding iris of the eye, and is able to …

The Morozov Discrepancy Principle For The Elliptic Inverse Problem, Peter Caya Nov 2015

The Morozov Discrepancy Principle For The Elliptic Inverse Problem, Peter Caya

Theses

Inverse problems of parameter identification and source identification in partial differential equations are highly ill-posed problems and for their satisfactory theoretical and numerical treatment some sort of regularization is necessary. In this thesis, we pose this inverse problem as an optimization problem and perform the regularization in Tikhonov sense. The most crucial aspect of the study of the regularized optimization problem is a proper selection of the regularization parameter. Although the theory for one of the most efficient methods for choosing an optimal regularization parameter, the so-called Morozov discrepancy principle, is well-developed for linear inverse problems, its use for nonlinear …

Direct Sums Decompositions: Applications, Wahdan Mohammad Yousef Abuziadeh

Theses

In this thesis we study the behavior of direct sum decomposition's in the category of modules. We present some of the most important "classical" results involving direct sum decomposition's for modules (e.g. Krull-Schmidt theorem, decomposition theorems for finitely generated modules over PID etc.). In the last part of the thesis we obtain new results, namely isomorphic refinement theorems for direct sum decomposition's of regular modules. We also obtain a link between regular modules and the exchange property.
