Issues Of Spirituality And Gender Differences, Michael J. Brawn Jan 1999

Issues Of Spirituality And Gender Differences, Michael J. Brawn

Theses

This study focuses on issues of spirituality and gender differences. The often interchanged terms of religion and spirituality are described, and the antagonism of science towards religion which has fostered a dearth of literature is reviewed. Implications for counseling are offered, and observations regarding gender differences are provided. The hypothesis that men and women do not differ on measures of spirituality is examined using the spiritual Well-Being Scale (Ellison & Paloutzian, 1983). Study participants were 45 males and 79 females from a church congregation of moderate Protestants. Results suggest that on measures of spiritual well-being, and on indices of religious …

A Homage To Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 "Emperor", Young-Ji Shin

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore my personal experience with the reciprocal relationships of the various fields of art. The media of art includes the fine arts, crafts, visual arts, theater, film, music, dance and literature - all genres commonly considered "the arts." These different fields are not isolated in and of themselves but rather have mutual connections amongst them. This thesis elucidates my concept of art as one. A vague fondness for the arts drew me to the Seoul Arts High School in 1987. I had a broad interest in art in general, and did not limit …

Requirement Elicitation And Knowledge Management Utilizing Relational Database, Client Server And Internet Technologies, Umang J. Dave Aug 1998

Requirement Elicitation And Knowledge Management Utilizing Relational Database, Client Server And Internet Technologies, Umang J. Dave

Theses

The first step in any project is a statement of requirements. Requirements specification is an inevitable part of any successful project. However, the "rush" to convert concepts to products often proves as a big hindrance in the development process of any requirements set. This, in turn, hampers the ability to produce the concept and manage knowledge as originally envisioned.

The goal of the thesis is to foster understanding among the different communities affected by the development of the given system. The thesis is based on the principle that the requirements elicitation process for complex system is fundamentally a conversation among …

Creation Of A Neural Network To Assist In Deciphering Degraded Ancient Hebrew Texts, Daniel Hentschel

Theses

The study of ancient manuscripts is a very important field. These manuscripts hold the keys to our past as a human race. Unfortunately, many ancient manuscripts have been degraded to the point where they are no longer legible. Many techniques have been developed to try to read parts of illegible documents. Neural networks are a fairly new technology with an extremely wide range of applications. The goal of this project is to determine how useful a neural network would be as a tool to help in deciphering ancient manuscripts, and, more specifically, Hebrew manuscripts. An image processing application was created …

Indifférance, John F. Pohorylo Jan 1998

Indifférance, John F. Pohorylo

Theses

The main intention of this thesis is to wrestle Derrida's notion of différance from an endless free-play of signification into some sense of boundedness, and to release meaning, knowledge and understanding from its relentless grasp. In achieving this goal, an entirely new field of "value" and "Quality" based discourse would open up within applied schismatic architectural theory.

Robert Pirsig offers a strong alternative to différance with his discourse on the Metaphysics of Quality, wherein he defines "Quality" as a pre-intellectual reality. This pre-intellectual reality, which I call "indifférance", is made up of the lenses of inorganic, organic and social …

Requirement Elicitation For Environmental Life Cycle Processes, Mariam Y. Burmawalla Jan 1998

Requirement Elicitation For Environmental Life Cycle Processes, Mariam Y. Burmawalla

Theses

To develop a user-satisfying product the most essential ingredient is to understand user's needs and expectations from the system. Lack of communication between the user and the developer results in an unsatifying output from the user's point of view. Thus proper understanding between the stakeholder and the developer is the most important requirement during the development of any system.

Requirement elicitation process is one such means of expressing wants and requirements from the system by both the parties. Based on Software Engineering Institute's model, requirement elicitation is a web-based application that allows all the people involved in the system to …

The Socio-Economic Role Of Crude Oil In The United States And Finland, Judith Deak Kallo Oct 1997

The Socio-Economic Role Of Crude Oil In The United States And Finland, Judith Deak Kallo

Theses

Running a company requires daily assessment of opportunities, risks and trends which involve socio-economic changes and scientific uncertainties. Technical-material resources play a major role in the uncertainty of corporate economics. Overproduction combined with increasing efficiencies have resulted in accelerated use and misuse of resources, accompanied by socio-ecological abuses related to wars and pollution. A significant current threat is global warming. As a result of this global challenge several companies have moved towards a more comprehensive environmental business management model. This is seen in corporate management initiating life cycle assessment and risk analysis of their products.

The socio-economic role of crude …

Organizational And Social Systems, Ronald James Snelson Jan 1997

Organizational And Social Systems, Ronald James Snelson

Theses

This project explores systems theory and practice as applied to Communications. A system is an organized or complex whole; an assemblage or combination of things, or parts forming a complex or unitary whole. A system is made up of (1) inputs, (2) operations (or processes), (3) outputs. Each interacts with, and is dependent on the proper functioning of the other. If something happens to one part the others parts are affected. Thus, within an organization, what happens to one can affect the whole.

An organization is a system. The systems approach has three goals: ( 1) to define relationships both …

A major criticism of intelligence tests is that they are biased against ethnic minority groups. The purpose of this study was to examine whether culturally different values affect the performance of ethnic minority students on these standardized tests. The records of 21 White, 34 Black and 18 Hispanic students who had been given the WISC-HI were selected and scores on the timed subtests were compared. No significant differences were found between the White, Black and Hispanic groups on the basis of the overall Performance Scale IQ scores. However, the White students' scores on the Verbal Scale were significantly higher than …

My thesis is an investigation into how four types of shells (scallop, nautilus, conch, and cowrie) have been used as signifiers in a variety of applications. My goal was to create a book that could be used by designers as a quick …

Usability Of Hypertext : Factors Affecting The Construction Of Meaning, Kathryn L. King May 1996

Usability Of Hypertext : Factors Affecting The Construction Of Meaning, Kathryn L. King

Theses

One type of hypertext application, information retrieval, has become increasingly popular and accessible due to the explosion of activity occurring on the World Wide Web. These hypertext documents are referred to as web sites. Readers can now access a multitude of web sites and retrieve a wide variety of information.

The uniqueness of a hypertext document centers around the concept that text is broken into an array of non-sequential text chunks, or nodes, which are connected through links. The hypertext reading can be considered an interactive experience requiring the reader to effectively navigate the document. The potentially complex link and …

The Life Of Mariano Payeras: A Study In Church/State Relations, Douglas Anthony Cutter May 1996

The Life Of Mariano Payeras: A Study In Church/State Relations, Douglas Anthony Cutter

Theses

To understand the role of Mariano Payeras as Father President of the California Franciscan Missions, it is necessary to place the historiography of the mission in its perspective. Literature abounds regarding California's Franciscan missionaries and their charges--the missions and Indian neophytes. Few historical arenas can claim such easily traceable roots as California and its mission period. In many ways the early Franciscans emerge as the creators of a new civilization, largely because the aborigines kept no written records and because centuries of cultural change, disease, persecution and censure have limited what anthropologists and historians can create of the native past.

A Directorial Experience: Noises Off, Jennifer Lynn Forrest Apr 1996

A Directorial Experience: Noises Off, Jennifer Lynn Forrest

Theses

Over the years I have been exposed to hundreds of shows, some excellent and other's not quite as good. Few shows that I have read, seen, or been involved with seem to have the appeal to both audiences and theatre groups as that of Michael Frayn's modem farce Noises Off. There are several strong reasons for its appeal.

One of the primary reasons for the play's popularity is that it is a reaction against modem theatre's tendency toward preaching at the audience. Contemporary plays tend to teach morality; and while modern playwrights do occasionally use comedy as a vehicle …

Automatic Train Control Using Neuro-Fuzzy Modeling And Optimal Control Techniques, Michael Natkin Apr 1996

Automatic Train Control Using Neuro-Fuzzy Modeling And Optimal Control Techniques, Michael Natkin

Theses

In rapid transit applications, it is often necessary to optimize the ride of the train for certain parameters based upon time of day, occupant density, and system-wide scheduling. Trade-offs have to be made between energy conservation, time minimization, and ride comfort. Typically the dynamics of the train are not well known (or not initially known at all), change over time, and are non-linear. In the past, a transit control engineer would typically use P-I control but could spend days or weeks on-site adjusting the P-I constants to obtain a ride that felt good and met the design constraints. This process …

Deconstruction, Existentialism, And Art, Ryutaro Furuhashi Jan 1996

Deconstruction, Existentialism, And Art, Ryutaro Furuhashi

Theses

My thesis is about deconstruction of existentialism through visual images, or more precisely, deconstructive visual representations of existential themes. The question of human existence has been a primal interest in my work. What is the meaning of existence? How can I make sense of man's unique intellectual capacity to question one's own existence? My concern is not so much about coming up with the answer, but to have a language to disclose the condition. In the past, my work was merely the ambiguous expression of the existential feeling without any particular conceptual foundation. My work is now a manifestation of …
