Manpower And Productivity In The Construction Industry, John A. Purciello Jun 1972

Manpower And Productivity In The Construction Industry, John A. Purciello

Theses

The relationship between manpower and productivity is an important factor in the area of increasing construction costs. Manpower supply is affected by worker mobility, influx of minority workers, work accidents, and training and apprenticeship programs.

A survey was conducted in the state of New Jersey to determine if a manpower shortage existed. The survey was conducted by submitting questionnaires to contractors, unions, owners, and architect-engineers.

The results of the survey indicated that a manpower shortage does exist, and that the shortage has influ enced construction costs, Furthermore, as a result of the increasing costs, indications of a decline in new …

Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano Jun 1972

Analysis Of Decomposition Gases And Leach Water From Controlled Sanitary Landfill, Robert Gargano

Theses

A sanitary landfill was simulated by placing "refuse" between two layers of soil in 6" by 24" cylinders. Canine nutriment was used to simulate the refuse. Once the refuse began to decompose, the decomposition gases were collected in a gas cell and analyzed in an Infrared Spectrophotometer. When gas samples were not taken, the decomposition gases were vented through a water trap (to prevent air from backing up into the system) into the atmosphere. Distilled water was added and withdrawn at two week intervals to leach out the pollutants.

From the Infrared analysis, the decomposition gases were determined to be …

Phosphate Removal From Sewage Using A Combination Of Ferric Chloride And A Polymeric Flocculant, Ravindra C. Patel Jun 1970

Phosphate Removal From Sewage Using A Combination Of Ferric Chloride And A Polymeric Flocculant, Ravindra C. Patel

Theses

The present work is concerned with a newer technique and approach to the problem of phosphate removal from waste water. This includes the removal of phosphate from the sample of activated sludge, i.e., a sample from the aeration tank of the secondary sewage treatment. The phosphate is removed by using ferric chloride as a precipitating agent and a cationic polyelectrolyte (P.E.) as a flocculating agent. Results of this study showed that: (a) P.E. addition gives a significant improvement in phosphate removal over that obtained by ferric chloride alone. In some cases the phosphate removal increased from 92 to 96.5 per …

Aiir Pollution Emissions From Turbine Powered Aircraft, Raymond Arthur Filippini Jun 1970

Aiir Pollution Emissions From Turbine Powered Aircraft, Raymond Arthur Filippini

Theses

The major pollutants that are emitted by jet aircraft include: particulate matter (soot), carbon monoxide, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides. The first of the pollutants, particulate matter (smoke), constitutes not only a visual nuisance but is also a potential health problem. The rest, which are not visible, are irritants and in high enough concentrations can be toxic.

Since pollutants emitted by jet aircraft are of the same type as those given off by a car, a direct comparison is possible. In one landing take off cycle (LTO), a four engine jet aircraft emits the same amount of particulate matter as …

A Study Of Consumer Acceptance Of A No-Loss Credit Card Verification System, Dean Arlidge

Theses

This research study focuses upon Credit Cards and a proposed verification method to reduce the risk of fraudulent use. It is anticipated that the proliferation and growing use of credit cards will require the use of security concepts offering built-in point of use protection that is automatic and reliable. A suggested concept is the use of a combined electronic credit card and a memory device. The proposed verification technique combines a user electronic credit card and memory number along with a simple imprinter which would be operated by the person accepting the credit card. Credit cards have become a widely …

The Effect Of Nitrilotriacetic Acid Upon The Biodegradability Of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate, John D. Mckenna Jun 1968

The Effect Of Nitrilotriacetic Acid Upon The Biodegradability Of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate, John D. Mckenna

Theses

The effects of trisodium nitrilotriacetate (SKTA) and sodium tipolyphosphate (STPP) upon the biological degradation of linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) ware experimentally investigated by the chemical oxygen demand and methylene blue methods. It was found that when STPP was present with LAS, the degradation of the LAS was better than when alone in solution. It was also found that LAS in solution with SN TA was less degradable than LAS alone. The benzene ring of the MS appeared to degrade after most of the linear portion of the chain had already been degraded.

The In Vivo Effects Of Hydrazines And Vitamin B6 On The Metabolism Of Gamma_Aminobutyric Acid, Miguel Angel Median May 1963

The In Vivo Effects Of Hydrazines And Vitamin B6 On The Metabolism Of Gamma_Aminobutyric Acid, Miguel Angel Median

Theses

The discovery of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in mammalian brain and its rigorous identification was reported in 1950 (1,2,3). Enzymatic experiments with brain acetone powder revealed that GABA was formed by the decarboxylation of glutamic acid and that the enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase, required pyridoxal phosphate as the co-factor (4,5). Radioactive tracer studies in vivo and in vitro with glutamic acid and glucose verfied the fact that the former was the precursor of GABA (6,7).

Classroom Discipline, Lorene H. Armstrong Jan 1963

Classroom Discipline, Lorene H. Armstrong

Theses

Constructive classroom discipline is an important part of the educative process. It provides children with the opportunity to experience the satisfaction of fitting into a social group in an atmosphere which is conducive to learning and which promotes healthy emotional control. Academic learning and disciplined behavior are inseparable. If the latter breaks down, the former is impaired. Good teaching is made possible only by good discipline. This paper will explore, by means of the research, what is considered good discipline in the classroom.

Rigid, Unplasticized, Polyvinyl Chloride Piping : An Engineering Material Study, James Patrick Kelleher Jun 1957

Rigid, Unplasticized, Polyvinyl Chloride Piping : An Engineering Material Study, James Patrick Kelleher

Theses

Rigid, unplasticized, polyvinyl chloride is one of several thermoplastic materials which can be made available on a reasonable, commercial basis in the form of pipe, as well as in other forms necessary for the assembly of a complete piping system.

These materials offer resistance to widely varying conditions of environment, light weight, relatively low cost, ease and economy of installation, self-insulating characteristics, minimum solid-deposit tendency, and low frictional losses. On the other hand, these materials have lower mechanical properties than most metals, and these properties are subject to wider variations as a function of temperature.

Of the thermoplastic piping materials …

Hydrolysis Of Sodium Silicofluoride, Frank Arthur Graf Jun 1956

Hydrolysis Of Sodium Silicofluoride, Frank Arthur Graf

Theses

The kinetics of an apparent solubility decrease of commercial sodium fluoride encountered in a piece of equipment designed to produce saturated sodium fluoride solution was Investigated, in order to understand why a consistently saturated solution was not possible to achieve with plain tap water as solvent.

The main impurity, about 1 percent sodium silicofluoride, coats the sodium fluoride crystals, resulting in an equilibrium shift during dissolution of the salt in water; and under certain conditions results in the formation of a protective gel. Therefore, in order to produce a constant strength sodium fluoride solution, this coated impurity must be decomposed …

Composting Coffee Waste, Lawrence James Hickey Jun 1956

Composting Coffee Waste, Lawrence James Hickey

Theses

Disposal of waste, and specifically organic waste, has become a serious problem in such industries as the canning, meat-packing, dairy and other food producing industries. Recently, with the introduction of instant coffee powder, this particular industry now has a waste disposal problem with the resultant coffee residue. Composting or biologically decomposing this waste to yield an organic fertilizer is one of the many ways to solve this problem.

There are no papers in the literature concerning composting of coffee waste and only one paper (65) is available covering studies of high rate composting of garbage and refuse. It is known …
