Parallel Implementation Of Spatial Domain Image Processing Algorithms On The Mesh Connected Computer Simulator, Adury Devi Prasad
Parallel Implementation Of Spatial Domain Image Processing Algorithms On The Mesh Connected Computer Simulator, Adury Devi Prasad
Theses
The performance of conventional computers in image processing applications is known to be inadequate due to the enormous computational requirements. Almost all image processing applications can be implemented in parallel. This thesis is the parallel implementation of neighborhood averaging and edge detection by the Sobel and Laplacian operators on the Mesh Connected Computer Computer Simulator (MCCS), a package developed at NJIT to study the behavior of SIMD machines. Expressions for speedup, utilization and efficiency have been derived. Suggestions for further improvements that can be incorporated in MCCS and its instruction set have been made.

Attitudes And Job Images Of The Public And Private Sectors : A Comparison Of College Students In The United States And Taiwan, Hui-Yuan Liao
Theses
This study focuses on a comparison of US and Taiwan students' attitudes towards public and private organizations. To identify the differences between two samples, 60 US students and 65 Taiwan students completed a questionnaire on 40 job attributes. Mixed design ANOVA revealed significant differences between the two samples.
Overall, students from the US had more positive attitudes than students from Taiwan. For both groups, attitudes were more positive for private-sector organizations than for public-sector organizations. And both groups believed that organizations fared better on extrinsic attributes than on intrinsic ones. However, significant interactions indicated that attitudes are complex and varied …
Solidification/Stabilization Of Chromium Contaminated Soil Using Cement And Fly Ash, Arunkumar Sripathi
Solidification/Stabilization Of Chromium Contaminated Soil Using Cement And Fly Ash, Arunkumar Sripathi
Theses
Chromium, when present in the soil, can cause serious health hazards. Toxicity depends upon the concentration in the soil. Chromium in soil has become a major problem in some sites and a method must be developed so that it can be treated or disposed of in a safe manner.
In this research experiments are conducted to check whether the chromium contaminated soil can be solidified and landfilled in a safe way. To have a control over the amount of chromium present in the soil, pure soil (free from chromium contamination) was used and chromium was added in different proportion.

Methods Development For Determination Of Trace Polar Volatile Organics In Environmental Samples, Qingchu Peng
Methods Development For Determination Of Trace Polar Volatile Organics In Environmental Samples, Qingchu Peng
Theses
The determination of trace levels of organic compounds in water samples is well developed for the less polar compounds, but the polar compounds are more difficult. The development of reliable and reproducible methods for such compounds as volatile alcohols and ketones is necessary if environmental monitoring is to be extended to these compounds.
The purge-and-trap method is frequently used for determination of volatiles in water samples. The method has problems when hydrophylic substances are being analyzed, since these are less easy to purge from the solution and more difficult to trap and desorb quantitatively. The high amount of water carried …

The Application Of Adaptive Step-Size Control In The Numerical Simulation Of Calcium Release In Vascular Smooth Muscle, Michael John Sydor
Theses
An algorithm for the adaptive control of numerical integration step-size is developed and implemented for the simulation of a three compartment model for Vascular Smooth Muscle. The three compartment model accounts for the simultaneous diffusion of Ca, 45Ca, EGTA, Ca-EGTA, and 45Ca-EGTA, and is an extension of a two compartment model by Diecke for the simultaneous diffusion of Ca, EGTA, and Ca-EGTA. The addition of the third compartment is to account for the presence of the Sarcoplasmic Reticulum which stores the calcium needed for contraction and is the primary regulator of calcium in the VSM cell. The SR …
Successor Employers' Obligations Under The National Labor Relations Act, Ting-Wang Lu
Successor Employers' Obligations Under The National Labor Relations Act, Ting-Wang Lu
Theses
A wave of business acquisitions is currently sweeping the American corporate scene. Companies are purchasing both unionized and non-unionized businesses at a dizzying pace.
Not surprisingly, after years of confrontational contract renewals, management and 10 unions at the New York Daily News are jockeying for position in talks over agreements that expire on March 30, 1990. Throughout the long negotiation process then the strike began on October 25, 1990. End with Robert Maxwell, the British press baron, signing an agreement on his purchase of the Daily News on March 14, 1991. Obviously, this question of successor employers' obligations is one …

Way To The Absolute, Gonca Ilbeyi
Theses
Nowadays more and more people, especially who live in large cities, suffer from a terrible emptiness and boredom, as if they are waiting for something that never arrives. Within modern civilization, its people lose the meaning of their lives, values, and they find themselves in morally decayed. My main purpose, through the medium of art, is to express the complexities and paradoxes of human existence in modern industrial societies- not from a pessimistic, but a skeptical perspective. Alienation, depersonalization, loss of identity in this world by bureaucratic rules and regulations are central problems of all modern industrial societies. The rise …

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Chemical Fixation Of Insoluble Non-Volatile, Chemically Non-Reactive Organics In Soil, Naihong Zhu
Theses
Microwave treatment of hazardous wastes like dioxin-contaminated soil potentially fills a great need for a remediation technology which potentially can be applied in-situ: the EPA has concluded from a risk assessment study that it is the excavation and transportation of such wastes that poses the greatest risk. Studies have been carried out on a surrogate for dioxin, namely, 9,10-anthraquinone because it has similar chemical and physical properties but it is not toxic. It was found in microwave treatment studies that, at temperatures attainable in-situ, anthraquinone became non-extractable. A model was proposed which postulated that as water was removed from soil …

Half of the fish from each tank were sacrificed, and the remaining fish were given a depuration period in unpolluted water. Tissue samples were composited, soxhlet extracted and passed through a florisil cleanup column. Gas chromatography, was used to analyze for hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorobutadiene, Aroclor …
Centrifugal Modeling Of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Kuo-Neng George Chang
Centrifugal Modeling Of Leaking Underground Storage Tanks, Kuo-Neng George Chang
Theses
There are between 2 to 3.5 million Underground Storage Tanks (UST) located through this nation. Most of these tanks store gasoline and fuel oil. Many tanks in fact are or will soon be leaking, thus making them one of the major sources of groundwater contamination in USA. The fate and transport of chemicals from the leaking USTs is estimated from mathematical models. A major difficulty in these modeling efforts has been a crucial lack of information concerning the constitutive relationships governing multiphase contaminant movement.
Centrifugal modeling is an alternative to mathematical modeling, which may give an insight to the problem …
