A Study Of The Relationship Between Alcoholism And Self-Esteem, Judy A. Astel
Theses
The relationship between the length of sobriety in the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and self-esteem level was examined for 27 recovering alcoholics. Participants included L3 male and 14 female members of AA who volunteered to complete the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and a cover/survey letter that contained demographic questions. Where it was predicted that there would be no relationship between length of sobriety and self-esteem level, it was found that there was a positive relationship between the two for the total group and the female group. That is, where length of time sober in AA increased, the alcoholic's …
The Unemployed Bring More Than Career Needs To Career Counseling, Gerald Edward Curtin
The Unemployed Bring More Than Career Needs To Career Counseling, Gerald Edward Curtin
Theses
For much of its hi story career counseling has focused on the career needs of the unemployed (Herr, 1989). Career concerns were more oriented to economic health, to change of an occupation, to the development of pre-vocational ski I ls and the preparation for work. Over the years an ever increasing amount of research has indicated the unemployed suffer many personal needs as a consequence of unemployment (Borgen & Amundsen, 1984; Kasi, Gore, & Cobb, 1975) in addition to career needs. These personal needs are both physical and mental (Banks & Jackson, 1982; O'Brien & Kabanoff, 1979).
In recent years …

Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Design And Applications, Eric Adams
Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Design And Applications, Eric Adams
Theses
This paper discusses the considerations involved in hybrid-electric vehicle design. The tradeoffs between issues such as drive scheme/arrangement, motor choice, batteries, and temperature control are investigated. The technologies and components which are currently available, and those which are likely in the near future, are described. A sport utility vehicle is taken as a specific case study because they are very popular and relatively inefficient. Calculations indicate that a hybrid sport utility vehicle with all wheel drive is feasible using existing components. The next generation vehicle using new technologies is also predicted.

The Effect Of Glucose Oxidase On Reducing Headspace Oxygen In An Airtight Package, Meredith Mchugh
Theses
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Glucose Oxidase in reducing headspace oxygen in an airtight package. Glucose Oxidase (0.05%) was included in the standard recipe for mayonnaise. A 0.10 ml of headspace gas was removed daily for 10 days from 15 jars of mayonnaise. Results indicated that headspace oxygen was reduced by the Glucose Oxidase. These results indicate that Glucose Oxidase may replace synthetic antioxidants used in food packaging currently. Studies may be continued to research the possibility of the reaction continuing after the product is opened to extend shelf life.

As the nineteenth century drew to a close, most Americans expressed optimism for the future. In the decades following the Civil War, the United States emerged as a burgeoning industrial nation, a nation filled with opportunity and promise. However, not all Americans shared this optimism. For African-Americans, the future would be remarkably similar to the past. From 1865-1877, AfricanAmericans enjoyed a new status in society. The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments to the constitution conferred a measure of legal equality upon blacks, raising hopes of eventual social inclusion in American society. These hopes vanished in the wake of a new …
Hazard Recognition And Regulation : An Asbestos Chronology, Diane A. Colson
Hazard Recognition And Regulation : An Asbestos Chronology, Diane A. Colson
Theses
One hundred years after it was first mined, several uses of asbestos were banned in the United States. The latency period that typifies asbestos-related diseases was but one factor in the delayed recognition of asbestos as a health hazard. Many other factors delayed the initiation of practical measures to alleviate the hazards.
Controversies surrounding exposure to asbestos continue. Epidemiological studies have answered many questions, but many others are, and may remain, unanswered. Some of the controversies surrounding exposure to asbestos are embedded in the development of the United States of America as a country. An understanding of the historical basis …

Effect Of Lead On Flexor Muscle Contraction And Photochemically-Induced Platelet Aggregation In Pial Microcirculation Of The Mouse, Amna Hamad Al Dhaheri
Theses
Lead is one of many heavy metal ions that can effectively compete for the binding sites of calcium, block the calcium channels and disturb the ion exchange. As a result, lead would be expected to affect the calcium-mediated cell functions. Muscle contraction and platelet aggregation are two important functions in which Ca2+ plays a major role and ultimately are affected by lead. Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of lead on mouse flexor muscle contraction and on photochemically-induced platelet aggregation in pial microcirculation. A study of an acute exposure (1, 5, 10 and 25 µM) and a …
