Theses
This study investigates the effect of frequency from sonic energy coupled with soil fracturing for the removal of volatile organic compounds from low permeability soils. The laboratory experiments consisted of a test cell, 12 1/2 inches by 12 1/2 inches and 23 3/4 inches high, containing a 1/2 inch geotextile made to simulate the fracture. The pneumatic sound generator used was a siren type generator designed and built at NJIT.
Laboratory experiments were performed using the NJJT siren at frequencies of 2957, 6637, 10317, 13997 Hertz and baseline tests with no sound energy were also conducted. The free moisture …
Role Of Zeta Potential In Micro-Carrier Process, Pallavi Mehta
Role Of Zeta Potential In Micro-Carrier Process, Pallavi Mehta
Theses
The micro-carrier process recently developed at NJIT is a new high rate settling technology for water and wastewater treatment. This process utilizes the micro-cater as a flocculating enhancement agent to achieve rapid removal of colloidal particles. This thesis consist of two parts, namely, 1) A review of the flocculation process utilized in water and wastewater treatment, and 2) An experimental program to evaluate the role of zeta potential in the flocculation process.
The results of this study indicated that the DLVO theory (Darjaguin, Landau, Overbeek, Verwey theory) is applicable to micro-cater process in the absence of polyelectrolytes. The best flocculation …
A Field Study Coupling Soil Fractionation And Sonic Energy For Enhancing The In Situ Removal Of Volatile Organic Compounds In The Vadose Zone, Hassan Kaleem
Theses
Remediation of sites contaminated with hazardous wastes could be an expensive endeavor. There is, therefore, the need to explore techniques, which can reduce the remediation time and achieve regulatory specifications, thus reducing the cost involved in a site remediation exercise.
In this work, we investigated the use of sonic energy to enhance the in situ removal rate of trichloroethylene and dichloroethylene from a site in Hillsborough Township. New Jersey. The experiments were performed with and without sonic energy and each time the concentration of the trichloroethylene swept out from the site and the flowrate of the effluent gas were measured. …

Model And Clinical Device Development For Noninvasive Diagnosis Of Low Back Pain And Dysfunction, Ravi Patraju
Theses
Millions of people suffer from acute or chronic low back pain. In order for proper treatment to be administered, a patient must receive an accurate diagnosis. Therefore, it is critical to develop an objective model to measure the motion and any dysfunction of a patient's low back. Only then can a physician effectively implement the correct therapy and measure its effectiveness through follow-up to minimize or eliminate low back pain.
Numerous cadaveric, active and passive studies have been done to understand the mechanics of low back disorders. However, only living human subjects suffer from low back pain and therefore cadaveric …
Metrics For Estimating The Product Disassembly Effort, Pradeep Kumar Yedlarajaiah
Metrics For Estimating The Product Disassembly Effort, Pradeep Kumar Yedlarajaiah
Theses
The concepts of environmentally friendly manufacturing and ecological reuse of materials have resulted in an increase in the number of disposed products that are disassembled. Moreover, the imposition of EPA regulations is forcing companies to invest in methods for protecting the environrnent. The first strategy in this vein is material recycling. The issue of recycling became important because of the limited landfill space, diminishing natural resources, environmental pollution due to dumping of products containing hazardous materials. Likewise, it is projected that the cost of extracting materials from natural resources is going to be much more expensive when compared to reclaiming …

Evaluation Of Stepwise Spectral Unmixing With Hydice Data, Daniel Newland
Evaluation Of Stepwise Spectral Unmixing With Hydice Data, Daniel Newland
Theses
Images of ground scenes have a tradeoff between spatial and spectral resolution. Sensors with fine spectral resolution sacrifice high spatial resolution. A hyperspectral image has tens to hundreds of bands of spectral information, which can potentially be used to increase understanding of the spatial content of a scene despite resolution limitations. While some pixels in an image could be identified as "trees" or "roads," for example, a number of pixels will be mixed, containing two or more material classes. The process called unmixing calculates the fractional presence of those predetermined materials. A new statistics-based stepwise unmixing routine has recently been …
Simulation Of Spectra Signatures Of Chemical Leachates From Landfills, Jason Hamel
Simulation Of Spectra Signatures Of Chemical Leachates From Landfills, Jason Hamel
Theses
Chemical leachates from landfills can turn into dangerous hazards if they are not identified and properly disposed. Currently, these chemicals are identified in the laboratory with samples hand collected from contaminated sites. This is economical for small sites but quickly gets expensive and time consuming for larger facilities that can cover hundreds of acres or multiple sites. This study examines the feasibility of using new hyperspectral detectors and computer processing to autonomously identify the presence of these leachates and greatly simplifying the monitoring process for these large sites. The effect of even low concentrations of many chemicals requires the identification …

There are three classes of polyether toxins responsible for Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) world-wide. The causative toxins are okadaic acid (OA) and derivatives (DTXs), pectenotoxins (PTXs) and yessotoxins (YTXs). The origin of these toxins are phytoplankton from Dinophysis or Prorocentrum spp. OA has been demonstrated for most outbreaks in Europe and more recently a new isomer DTX-2 has been reported in Ireland.
Marine phytoplankton biomass samples consisting predominantly of Dinophysis acuta, were acquired using a large double plankton net from waters off the South-west coast of Ireland. Analysis of unialgal samples using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence and …
Characterisation And Optimisation Of Gypsum Crystallization, Catherine H. Shannon
Characterisation And Optimisation Of Gypsum Crystallization, Catherine H. Shannon
Theses
Gypsum is produced as a by-product during the citric acid production process at ADM Ringaskiddy. The particle size and filterability of the gypsum has a critical bearing on the overall citric acid production rate. Prior to August 1996, research in the area of gypsum crystal optimisation at ADM had concentrated on the application of vortex mixing to perform the gypsum formation reaction. While the gypsum crystals produced with vortex mixing were found to be desirably clear of microcrystalline gypsum, the crystals were considerably smaller and more difficult to filter and wash. This research project sought to retain the advantages conferred …
