An Application Of The Bass Diffusion Model To Border Security And Illegal Immigration, Ayeh Ohene-Asah Oct 2009

An Application Of The Bass Diffusion Model To Border Security And Illegal Immigration, Ayeh Ohene-Asah

Theses

This research's objective was to apply the Bass Diffusion model to border security and illegal immigration. The Potential Actual Illegal Immigration Population (PAIIP) model was created using the Vensim software program to illustrate and simulate illegal border crossings and assess the impact of detention, deportation, and amnesty on the communication between potential and actual illegal immigrants. This systems modeling approach combined with a secondary analysis method was used for data collection and analysis. Results indicate that no single or combination of policies solves the problem of illegal immigration. This study's conclusions point out that the greater the quality of information …

Visualizing Threat And Impact Assessment To Improve Situation Awareness, Michael Cooper Nusinov Oct 2009

Visualizing Threat And Impact Assessment To Improve Situation Awareness, Michael Cooper Nusinov

Theses

Situation awareness comes from combined knowledge of the environment, friendly actions and adversaries' actions. Impact assessment applies that knowledge to determine the consequences of those actions on specific missions and assets. In domains such as asymmetric warfare and cyber security, impact assessment is critical to provide timely and comprehensive situation awareness. An analyst needs to be able to quickly and accurately assess a situation, see the factors affecting important assets, and come to a conclusion on what the best course of actions are to take. Many attempts have been made to visualize a situation from observed raw data for better …

Transient Studies On Rna Interference And Coat Protein-Mediated Resistance To Cassava Brown Streak Disease, Emmanuel Ogwok Sep 2009

Transient Studies On Rna Interference And Coat Protein-Mediated Resistance To Cassava Brown Streak Disease, Emmanuel Ogwok

Theses

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important staple and cash crop in Africa, Latin America and Asia. In east and southern Africa, cassava brown streak disease (CBSD) caused by cassava brown streak virus (CBSV) is associated with significant losses in cassava production. Previously, the disease was prevalent only along coastal eastern and southern Africa, but it recently emerged in Uganda and is spreading rapidly in the country as well as in neighboring countries. Apart from a few cultivars that have shown tolerance to CBSV in Tanzania, no effective resistance to CBSV has been developed and deployed to date. The full …

A Vital Environment, Taesung Jeng Sep 2009

A Vital Environment, Taesung Jeng

Theses

Every day, nature is being used and is also being destroyed through over cutting and overgrazing of forests and grasslands because of the expansion of human numbers. The economic and material demands of growing villages and towns are not the causes but the results of human activity. What is the impact of the careless occupancy of so many of earth's human occupants? Are we turning everything in nature into something human-made and human used? My artworks emphasize how nature as a lay concept is changed by humans' desire for comfort and materialism. In addition, since human creation is another form …

Nostalgia, Pavel Romaniko Aug 2009

Nostalgia, Pavel Romaniko

Theses

The visual part of this project has revolved around ideas that have been in the process of forming themselves for a few years. But if I could assign a topic or a totalizing theme to the project, I would be limiting it in a very particular way. I see Nostalgia as a beginning and in no way something that has come to fruition or to a speci!c resolution. If anything I consider it as a still evolving subject; it is very youthful and fresh for me. The project also rejects a new way of working for me from creating the …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) And Gender Differences, Christina A. Carducci Aug 2009

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) And Gender Differences, Christina A. Carducci

Theses

Few studies investigate gender differences concerning Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Hinshaw, 2002). Further, studies that examine self-report ratings of ADHD in females are lacking. Self-reports are crucial to identifying ADHD in females who have been found to have more internalizing symptoms of ADHD (Quinn, 2005). Current models suggest that executive function, rather than attention, is the core deficit of ADHD and that it may serve as a neurobehavioral domain that differentiates individuals with ADHD based on subtype and gender (Wodka et al., 2008). This study examined gender differences on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning- Adult Version (BRIEF-A) …

An Examination Of Scent-Marking, Individual Odors, And Individual Discrimination In The Raccoon (Procyon Lotor)., Laura Alice Kent Aug 2009

An Examination Of Scent-Marking, Individual Odors, And Individual Discrimination In The Raccoon (Procyon Lotor)., Laura Alice Kent

Theses

This study had three objectives: 1) to characterize the patterns of scent-marking in captive raccoons; 2) to determine if wild-trapped raccoons can discriminate individual differences in the odors of urine, feces or anal sac secretions; 3) to analyze the variation in chemical composition of urine samples among individuals. I observed five raccoons living in a semi-natural enclosure at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska and recorded all behaviors related to scent-marking. For the studies on individual differences and discrimination through odors, I used the familiarization-discrimination technique with raccoons housed in conditions that approximated their natural environment. In the chemical …

Classifying The Fire Regime Condition Class For Upland Oak-Hickory Forests, Paul David Tikusis Aug 2009

Classifying The Fire Regime Condition Class For Upland Oak-Hickory Forests, Paul David Tikusis

Theses

Several reports of widespread establishment of mesophytic vegetation within oak-hickory upland forests have been documented throughout the Central Hardwoods Region. Previous studies suggest deviations from historic disturbance regimes may be a primary driver of vegetation change, necessitating the use of Fire Regime Condition Class (FRCC) guidelines to measure changes in forest structure. Current parameters of forest structure and fuel loading were assessed within mature oak-hickory uplands throughout the ecological subsections of the Shawnee National Forest, including the Greater Shawnee Hills, Lesser Shawnee Hills, Cretaceous Hills, and the Illinois Ozarks. Present species importance values and forest structure were compared with reference …

Aortic Valve Performance With Transaortic Ventricular Cannula, James Cezo Aug 2009

Aortic Valve Performance With Transaortic Ventricular Cannula, James Cezo

Theses

A novel transaortic ventricular cannula, known as the 'double barrel' cannula (DBC), is designed to minimize the invasiveness of Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) implantation by combining the inlet and outlet cannulae into a single dual lumen cannula. Both the inlet and outlet lumen will pass through a single opening in the apex of the left ventricle with the outflow then continuing past the aortic valve, into the aortic arch. This design offers several potential advantages over the current state of-the-art. The benefits of the DBC include less invasive surgery and providing mechanical support to the septum. By routing the outflow …

Determination Of 3-Dimensional Deformations Of The Alveolar Sac During Simulated Breathing, Joseph M. Ferrara Aug 2009

Determination Of 3-Dimensional Deformations Of The Alveolar Sac During Simulated Breathing, Joseph M. Ferrara

Theses

Mechanical properties of the parenchyma of the lung are currently unknown and difficult to quantify. Creating a computer model with valid property values will allow researchers to further investigate particle mixing in the lung during inhalation and exhalation. One challenge with modeling the material of the lung is the intricate geometry of the alveolar sac. Researchers are currently trying to model particle deposition within the lung using computational fluid dynamics. However, the mechanical properties of alveolar sac structure are currently undetermined. Due to the complexity of the physical structure of an alveolar sac, it has been a challenge to model …

The Effect Of Training, Aim Pattern And Target Type On The Ergonomics And Efficiency Of Handheld Scanners, Nicolette M. Mcgeorge

Theses

Handheld scanning is a prevalent industrial task that is prone to injury due to the repetitive motion of the task. Studies conducted with Rochester Institute of Technology and Honeywell have sought to discover the ergonomic and efficiency benefits of various scanning technologies and methods. One factor not fully investigated in these earlier works is the effect of training on the proper use of scanners. This thesis study compares trained and untrained user performance and ergonomics during a series of scanning tasks using a hand held omni-directional scanner. Comparison is based on such variables as target type (image that is scanned), …

Telemedicine Patient Identification With Rfid; An Embedded Approach, Onder Aksoy Jul 2009

Telemedicine Patient Identification With Rfid; An Embedded Approach, Onder Aksoy

Theses

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has potential for application in the new field of telemedicine, as the use of radio waves offers advantages over traditional optical technology such as bar codes. Radio waves are not limited by line of sight, they can penetrate objects and communicate in a wireless fashion. However, the same advantage is also the inherent weakness, as radio waves are susceptible to attack. Ongoing efforts have identified forward secure chain hashing as a viable security protocol for RFID authentication. Today's typical RFID communications take place with the "host-reader-tag" arrangement where the computational requirements are performed by a back …

Absence Of Freight Transportation Plans In State And County Emergency Operations Plans, Christine Brown Jul 2009

Absence Of Freight Transportation Plans In State And County Emergency Operations Plans, Christine Brown

Theses

Natural disasters have the ability to disrupt structured systems in the United States, such as transportation systems and freight routes. When a natural disaster occurs, freight is forced to reroute around the effected areas. Rerouting slows recovery efforts, as well as normal transportation of goods within the United States. Therefore, natural disasters, with respect to freight routes, have widespread impacts and the possibility for acute hardship in disaster-prone areas. This thesis examines how comprehensive state and local level emergency operations plans are with respect to freight transportation rerouting following a natural disaster. Coastal cities can modify freight routes and this …

The Effects Of Grouping And Curriculum On The Self-Concept Of Gifted Children, Valerie A. Beaman

Theses

The Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effect predicts gifted students educated in heterogeneous settings develop higher academic self-concept than those educated in homogeneous settings. Academic self-concept of students in multi-age classroom using the Primary Years International Baccalaureate Program (Primary IB) was compared to academic self-concept of students in single-aged classroom learning traditional curriculum. Data were collected (N=65) on third and fourth-graders using the Self-Description Questionaire (Marsh, 1992). It was hypothesized that gifted and non-gifted students educated in multi-age classrooms taught with Primary IB have higher academic self-concept than children in single age classrooms. Results of 2x2 ANOVA indicated no significant differences between gifted and …

Phenomenally Happy: An Examination Of The Ways Heidegger Can Critique And Support Positive Psychology, Samantha Crow Jun 2009

Phenomenally Happy: An Examination Of The Ways Heidegger Can Critique And Support Positive Psychology, Samantha Crow

Theses

This thesis argues that Positive Psychology, one of the newest branches of Psychology, conforms to sets of ideas about the human person which have been accepted from within the Western philosophical and scientific traditions, and that these ideas obstruct its dual ambitions to provide a balance to the weakness model in Psychology and to enhance human flourishing, since these require a comprehensive account of the human person. Heidegger’s work is nominated as a likely source of remedy, for three key reasons: Both systems of thought share superficial similarities which provide the basis for the clarification and development of key ideas …

A Mathematical Model Of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Karthik Bathena Jun 2009

A Mathematical Model Of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis, Karthik Bathena

Theses

A SIS model for Cutaneous Leishmaniasis is developed and analyzed. The model contains a human population of incidental hosts, along with animals that are the reservoir hosts and the sandfly vector. Reproductive rates for the persistence of the infection are derived from the model. Conditions for the existence of endemic and disease-free equilibrium are obtained. The stability analysis of the disease-free equilibrium is investigated and numerical simulations for the model are provided.

Experimental Investigation Of Mixing Time In A Stirred, Torispherical-Bottomed Tank Equipped With A Retreat-Blade Impeller, Nonjaros Chomcharn May 2009

Experimental Investigation Of Mixing Time In A Stirred, Torispherical-Bottomed Tank Equipped With A Retreat-Blade Impeller, Nonjaros Chomcharn

Theses

Glass-lined reactors are typically used in the pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals industries because of their material compatibility with most reactants and their cleanability. These reactors are typically equipped with a retreat-blade impeller placed close to the bottom of the tank a single baffle mounted from the top. The mixing performance of such reactors has not received significant attention in the literature, despite their ubiquitous presence in the pharmaceutical industry. In particular, mixing time, i.e., the time required by the system to achieve a predefined level of homogeneity, has not been studied to any significant degree.

In this work, the mixing …

Mixing Performance Of A Novel, Continuous Confined Impinging Jets Mixer Using Competitive Reactions, Han Zheng

Theses

In this work, a novel continuous flow apparatus featuring the impingement of fluid jet streams in the presence of ultrasonic energy provided by an ultrasonic probe was tested using competitive reactions in order to determine its mixing effectiveness. The ultrasonic energy enhances micromixing of the fluid jet streams, which results in an overall mixing effectiveness improvements in different physical and chemical processes.

In the competitive reactions system used here (third Bourne reaction), one stream containing sodium hydroxide was continuously fed to the first impinging jet, while an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and ethyl chloroacetate was fed to the second …

Development Of An Experimental System To Determine The Contribution Of Titin And Collagen To Passive Stiffness Of Myocardium, Saurin Bharat Shah May 2009

Development Of An Experimental System To Determine The Contribution Of Titin And Collagen To Passive Stiffness Of Myocardium, Saurin Bharat Shah

Theses

Diastolic dysfunction is known to be a major factor for congestive heart failure in aged humans and other mammals. The main contributors to increase in the myocardial stiffness, hindering the cardiac mechanics, are alterations in intracellular titin and extracellular collagen matrix. Titin is a giant extensible protein, the third filament of striated muscle after actin and myosin, which provides elasticity to passive sarcomeres. The aim of this study is to develop an efficient experimental system that will prove to be instrumental in comparing the contribution of titin against collagen to the passive stiffness of cardiac muscle extracted from experimental animals …

The Potential For Misleading Visual Communication On Food Packaging, Terry Ann Hayes May 2009

The Potential For Misleading Visual Communication On Food Packaging, Terry Ann Hayes

Theses

Consumers today are becoming more health conscious in light of America's growing obesity epidemic. Because of this, food companies often selectively highlight the healthfulness of their products, while carefully de-emphasizing the unhealthy components. These messages are frequently communicated by the food packaging itself, because packaging is a major influence on a shopper's perception of the food inside. The design of the food package, comprising both the two-dimensional surfaces and overall three-dimensional form, conveys these messages through variables related to color, imagery, typography, language, and shape. This thesis examined both organic and natural food packaging to uncover how healthfulness is communicated …

Black Box, Ryan N. Shuler May 2009

Black Box, Ryan N. Shuler

Theses

Fear and paranoia are steadily on the rise throughout the world as a result, in part, of media's presentation of violent and traumatic imagery. The dissemination and reception of these types of images are consequential for a viewing public, including an increasing desensitization to violence through over-exposure; the potential for aggressive behavior by people of all ages; and the loss of a viewer's accountability as witness to a disturbing event. Black Box is an aesthetic investigation of the reception of traumatic images by a viewing public. In order to trace this reception, the image of the American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), …

Theses

The purpose of this project is to assess the feasibility of a Kalman Filter approach for fault detection in a highly unstable system, specifically the heart pump currently under development at RIT. Simulations and experimental work were completed to determine the effects of possible position sensor fault conditions on the system; that information was then used in conjunction with a pair of Kalman filters to create a method of detecting faults and providing fault-tolerant operation. The heart pump system was modeled using Simulink and then the fault diagnosis and tolerance system was added to the model and tested via simulation …

Semi-Automated Techniques For The Retrieval Of Dermatological Condition In Color Skin Images, Ranxi Huang May 2009

Semi-Automated Techniques For The Retrieval Of Dermatological Condition In Color Skin Images, Ranxi Huang

Theses

Dermatologists base the diagnosis of skin disease on the visual assessment of the skin. This fact shows that correct diagnosis is highly dependent on the observer's experience and on his or her visual perception. Moreover, the human vision system lacks accuracy, reproducibility, and quantification in the way it gathers information from an image. So, there is a great need for computer-aided diagnosis. We propose a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system to aid in the diagnosis of skin disease. First, after examining the skin images, pre-processing will be performed. Second, we examine the visual features for skin disease classified in the …
