Effectively Targeting Older Consumers, Jenna Nichols
Effectively Targeting Older Consumers, Jenna Nichols
Theses
Marketing strategies are used to convey product or service information and value offerings to a defined and specific audience. The ways in which these strategies are realized through graphic design may greatly impact the meaning and success of a marketing message on the intended audience. Some forms of messaging may unintentionally have a negative or positive effect on their viewer. It is important to analyze the types of designed messages being communicated to different age groups. This thesis study focuses on single-page, printed promotional advertisements specifically created to market a product or a service to a Senior demographic, people aged …
System Design For Health Information Management In Rural India, Rishikesh Khedkar
System Design For Health Information Management In Rural India, Rishikesh Khedkar
Theses
The problem of child mortality in India is one of the biggest that today's developing nation is dealing with. A complex matrix of different societal and behavioral forces is present at the root of this problem. Not only are absolute numbers of child deaths high in India, but the Child Mortality Rate (CMR) is also substantially higher among developing nations. Different sources of information at national as well as at state levels give feedback to the Indian Government on this nationwide issue. Looking closely at the west coast of India, the State of Maharashtra is having systematic problems in recording …
Development Of Cerium Dioxide Coated Alumina Adsorbent To Study The Removal Of Arsenic From Ground Water, Laura Herder
Development Of Cerium Dioxide Coated Alumina Adsorbent To Study The Removal Of Arsenic From Ground Water, Laura Herder
Theses
Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a major problem in both developing and developed countries as it is quite dangerous at extremely low concentrations and prevalent in many water supplies. Although there are many removal techniques for arsenic, the most promising for developing countries appears to be adsorption, since it is relatively low in cost, is easy to implement, requires no electricity, and can remove trace amounts of materials from solutions. Current adsorbents that have a high affinity for arsenic, but are costly because they have slow adsorption rates, low capacities, limited pH ranges, are affected adversely by competing ions, and …
The Twelve Animals: An Interactive Guide To The Chinese Zodiac Signs, Yanzi Chen
The Twelve Animals: An Interactive Guide To The Chinese Zodiac Signs, Yanzi Chen
Theses
The Chinese Zodiac signs are determined by the lunar year in which you were born. The Chinese believe the animal ruling one's birth year has a profound influence on personality, and destiny. Unlike Western astrology, which is based on the months of the year, the Chinese Zodiac, traditionally referred to as the Sheng Xiao, is based on a twelve-year cycle with each year represented by an animal. The twelve animals are: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. The Chinese Zodiac is found in several East Asian countries besides China. My thesis is an exploration …
The Vehicle Routing Problem With A Volunteer Workforce, Leonardo Gala
The Vehicle Routing Problem With A Volunteer Workforce, Leonardo Gala
Theses
Non-profit organizations like the Meals on Wheels association of America rely on a volunteer workforce to prepare and deliver meals to approximately one million home-bound citizens nation-wide. At the community level, hundreds of volunteers are routed through rural, sub-urban, and urban sectors daily. These communities can benefit from optimization techniques that effectively route volunteers. Lack of volunteer availability requires Meals on Wheels to maintain a waiting list for people who require meals but cannot be incorporated into the current delivery schedule. The consistency of delivery routes is also of concern, as there are service and operational benefits gained when volunteers …
A Power Efficient Pulsed Mac Protocol For Body Area Networks, David Layerle
A Power Efficient Pulsed Mac Protocol For Body Area Networks, David Layerle
Theses
The need for a reduction in healthcare cost has escalated over the past decade. Therefore, preventive medicine through remote health monitoring and Body Area Networks has gained more attention. This paper presents a novel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol called Pulsed-MAC or simply PMAC to efficiently manage wireless communications in Body Area Networks. PMAC drastically extends the network life time by augmenting sensor nodes with charge pumping circuitry which harvest energy from a pulsed signal used to orchestrate communications. By measuring the average radio power consumption in a sensor node over a 24 hour simulation period, results show that PMAC …
Multiple Scale Landscape Pattern Index Interpretation For The Persistent Monitoring Of Land-Cover And Land-Use, Alvin Spivey
Multiple Scale Landscape Pattern Index Interpretation For The Persistent Monitoring Of Land-Cover And Land-Use, Alvin Spivey
Theses
Mapping land-cover land-use change (LCLUC) over regional and continental scales, and long time scales (years and decades), can be accomplished using thematically identified classification maps of a landscape--a LCLU class map. Observations of a landscape's LCLU class map pattern can indicate the most relevant process, like hydrologic or ecologic function, causing landscape scale environmental change. Quantified as Landscape Pattern Metrics (LPM), emergent landscape pat- terns act as Landscape Indicators (LI) when physically interpreted. The common mathematical approach to quantifying observed landscape scale pattern is to have LPM measure how connected a class exists within the landscape, through nonlinear local kernel …

Creating Current, Jesse Harrington
Creating Current, Jesse Harrington
Theses
What if we could bring education to the masses explaining how to develop a particular product without having to mass produce the actual product? The pursuit of creating knowledge economies using power on demand as an idea worth spreading is how I have attempted to answer this question. Through identifying three styles of active learning, I designed three idea spreading mechanisms. Kinesthetic, Accommodative and Tactillian learners are all active learners, they want physical involvement with their education. These three concepts; a bicycle generator museum exhibit (accommodative), a traveling bicycle generator exhibit (kinesthetic) and a set of DIY/DIT (Do it together) …
Pressured Into Deception: Using General Strain Theory As A Framework For Testing The Validity Of Self-Reported Drug Use, Theron Keith Jackson
Pressured Into Deception: Using General Strain Theory As A Framework For Testing The Validity Of Self-Reported Drug Use, Theron Keith Jackson
Theses
Determining the accuracy of self-reported drug use is important for criminal justice professionals so that they are better able to provide proper treatment referrals to those in the criminal justice system who may need substance abuse help (Rosay et al., 2007). However, self-reports, especially those of drug users, are not always accurate (Harrison, 1997). Drug use is a highly sensitive topic and disclosure of such behavior could lead to negative repercussions for the individual within the criminal justice system as well as lead to further stigmatization of the individual outside the system (Golub et al., 2002; Harrell, 1997). The current …
Galileo's Philosophy Of Science, Jason Eugene Gavin
Galileo's Philosophy Of Science, Jason Eugene Gavin
Theses
The work of Galileo Galilei has, perhaps more than any other singular historical example, been used to support a huge variety of positions within philosophy of science. This simple fact immediately yields two questions: “what is it about the case of Galileo that lends itself to be so easily reinterpreted to fit such a wide variety of interpretations”, and “what can we say with certainty about Galileo’s philosophy of science?” In this essay, I show that many interpretations of Galileo’s thought suffer from very specific problems and fallacies. These in turn allow a distorted view of Galileo’s work to be …

Environmental Impact Analysis Of Alternative Pallet Management Systems, Ainoa Mazeika Bilbao
Environmental Impact Analysis Of Alternative Pallet Management Systems, Ainoa Mazeika Bilbao
Theses
Pallets, the most common unit-load platform, allow the transportation of goods in an efficient and reliable way. Every year, 700 million new pallets are manufactured and become part of the approximately 2 billion pallets that are in circulation in the U.S. The total life-cycle environmental impact of pallets depends on materials, manufacturing, handling processes, and the disposal practice (end-of-life). Plastic pallets can be lighter and might last longer but their manufacturing processes are energy intensive and could contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. On the other hand, wooden pallets can be cheaper and easily repaired but present a shorter …
Measuring The Organizational Effectiveness Of Public-Private Partnerships: A Case Study Of The Department Of Energy’S Clean Cities Public-Private Partnership Program, Sarah Gerace
Theses
This thesis measures the organizational effectiveness of public-private partnerships (PPPs) by using the DOE's Clean Cities PPP program as a case study. A survey was sent to 109 Clean Cities coordinators with questions pertaining to coalition characteristics and strategies. The survey results formed the basis for the analysis of the effectiveness of the coalitions. Coalitions can have an independent or subsidiary organizational structure. Furthermore, the broad/overarching organizational structure of Clean Cities coalitions serves as an important characteristic that determines a coalition's organizational operations. In measuring the Clean Cities program in terms of organizational effectiveness, the structure of coalitions (e.g., independent …

Compact Modeling Of Thin-Film Silicon Transistors Fabricated On Glass, Christopher Nassar
Theses
The semiconductor industry, now entering its seventh decade, continues to innovate and evolve at a breakneck pace. E. O. Wilson, the famous Harvard biologist who is an expert on ants, estimates that there are 1017 ants on earth. The semiconductor industry is now shipping 100 transistors per ant every year. In addition, the pace of growth means we are building more electronics in a year than existed on January 1st of that year! A major driver for this growth in recent years is the portable consumer electronics market which includes cell phones, personal digital assistants, and tablets. The focus of …
Real-Time Data Acquisition, Transmission And Archival Framework, Piyush Agarwal
Real-Time Data Acquisition, Transmission And Archival Framework, Piyush Agarwal
Theses
Most human actions are a direct response to stimuli from their five senses. In the past few decades there has been a growing interest in capturing and storing the information that is obtained from the senses using analog and digital sensors. By storing this data it is possible to further analyze and better understand human perception. While many devices have been created for capturing and storing data, existing software and hardware architectures are aimed towards specialized devices and require expensive high-performance systems. This thesis aims to create a framework that supports capture and monitoring of a variety of sensors and …

Non-Invasive Interventions Top Reduce Low Back Dysfunction, Nadi Atalla
Theses
This study aims to quantitatively evaluate the low back condition so that low back dysfunction can be identified and classified when measurements show a variance from the normal. The evaluation is done by using the hysteresis concept. In this study, subjects received two different types of treatment: massaging using a mechanical massager for ten minutes and manual massaging by a professional physician. Using the Automated Anatomic Torsion Monitor (A-ATM), the low back of the subject was evaluated before and after treatment. The change in Hysteresis Loop Area (HLA) was -12.5% for mechanical massaging and -15.7% for manual massaging. The negative …
Emg-Based Determination Of Upper Extremity Virtual Trajectory, Akshata Anand Korgaonkar
Emg-Based Determination Of Upper Extremity Virtual Trajectory, Akshata Anand Korgaonkar
Theses
Movement and position of the limbs of the human body are controlled by the interaction between the muscle and the peripheral and central nervous system. This interaction is nothing but the neural signals. Neural signals are electrical in nature and referred as action potentials. An EMG is a summation of action potentials from the muscle fibers under the electrode placed on the skin. Thus it is easy to estimate the nature and timing of the movement from the firing of an EMG signal. Kai Chen in his dissertation has built the model to represent the arm movement with stiffness, damping, …
Effects Of Hypertension And Aging On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Contribution To Reconstituted Aortic Tissue Stiffness, Nancy Lisa Sehgel
Effects Of Hypertension And Aging On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Contribution To Reconstituted Aortic Tissue Stiffness, Nancy Lisa Sehgel
Theses
Aortic stiffness increases with hypertension and aging, and much of this increase has been thought to occur due to changes in the extracellular matrix. However, an increase in cell stiffness could also be important. To study the cellular contribution to aortic stiffness, a reconstituted aortic tissue model (composed of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a collagen matrix) was developed. VSMCs isolated from thoracic aortic samples of 5-week and 18-week old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were passaged four times and then separately incubated in collagen for two days on a cylindrical mandrel. The resulting …

Reading On The Internet: The Presentation Of Online News Articles And Its Relationship To Reader’S Recall And Comprehension, Kristen Curtze
Theses
Since 1995, the number of Internet users has increased by 1.88 billion people. As the population increased, so did the number of websites, news portals, and the amount of information presented on the Internet. Information once commonly read in a newspaper can now be found online with videos, interactive features, and other forms of multimedia. Yet, is reading a story in static, plain text different from reading a story with videos and interactivity? This study asks whether or not a relationship exists between Internet news article presentations and a reader's recall and comprehension. Forty-two participants read online news articles presented …
Discovering Inner Ear And Central Auditory System Cellular Pathways That Might Contribute To Age-Related Hearing Loss, Xiaoxi Liu
Theses
Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a prevalent communication problem among senior citizens. Previous work (Tadros et al., 2008) has revealed genes which change their expression significantly with aging and hearing loss. However, this study is limited as it mainly focuses on apoptosis-related genes. Genes that regulate biological pathways other than apoptosis might also contribute to the development of age-related hearing loss, as suggested by some studies (Tadros et al., 2007; Souza et al., 2008). In order to circumvent this limitation and to better understand the underlying mechanisms of this communication problem, a free computational tool called Gene Set Enrichment Analysis …
