Establishment Of The Kosovo National Tourism Organization / [Presentation Given November 14, 2012], Nijazi Shala Nov 2012

Establishment Of The Kosovo National Tourism Organization / [Presentation Given November 14, 2012], Nijazi Shala

Theses

The Kosovo National Tourism Organization (KNTO) is a proposed organization whose role will be to provide a bridge between industry and the government making them effective partners. Previous attempts by the current Tourism, within the Ministry of Trade and Industry (DT/MTI), to engage industry has provided some progress but it did not earn a credible and respected role as the united voice of the industry or as the government’s strategic partner. It is hoped that the new KNTO will achieve a genuine and significant breakthrough. This project identifies the motivations and concerns regarding the establishment of the KNTO by examining …

Cinch Furniture System, Betsy Barnhart Nov 2012

Cinch Furniture System, Betsy Barnhart

Theses

This thesis explores solutions to the problem young adults face when relocating on a budget. The target age range of 20 to 30 year-olds face multiple hurdles when it comes to their nomadic existence. On average this age group relocates once per year; they are a consumerist population often defining themselves by their possessions; and are often under tight budget constraints. Since nomadic cultures to the current day, relocation has allowed individuals access to better things and the essentials of life. The difference being that nomadic cultures had fewer possessions which were designed for easy packing and carrying, where as …

Mechanisms Of Psoriatic Arthritis, Laurel Myers Oct 2012

Mechanisms Of Psoriatic Arthritis, Laurel Myers

Theses

Psoriasis (Ps) is the most common chronic autoimmune disease in the United States. The immune system releases proinflammatory cytokines and growth factors that accelerate the growth of skin cells which accumulate and form thick red patches of skin on various parts of the body. About 25 percent of psoriasis patients develop inflammatory arthritis in which inflammation progresses to joints and entheses. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) patients exhibit joint pain, stiffness, and swelling which can affect any part of the body. PsA occurs when the immune cells release cytokines that act on healthy cells and tissues to induce skin and joint inflammation. …

Design Of A Terrain Detection System For Foot Drop, Christopher Sullivan Oct 2012

Design Of A Terrain Detection System For Foot Drop, Christopher Sullivan

Theses

The ankle foot orthotic (AFO) has been around for centuries. They were created to augment functionality of an ankle damaged due to injury or disease. A common reason a patient might be prescribed an AFO is a condition called foot drop. Foot drop can be caused by many conditions, but the most common reason is a stroke. Foot drop can be characterized by the inability to raise and/or lower a patient's foot. This incapacitation of the patient's foot leads to unnatural gaits and joint fatigue, as well as increasing the patient's likelihood of tripping and becoming seriously injured. Hard plastic …

Cost Benefit Analysis Of The Federal Tax Credit For Purchasing An Electric Vehicle, William Fuqua Oct 2012

Cost Benefit Analysis Of The Federal Tax Credit For Purchasing An Electric Vehicle, William Fuqua

Theses

This paper will present the results of a cost-benefit analysis performed to determine the public benefits of the $7500 federal tax credit for purchasing an electric vehicle. A cost benefit ratio including air pollution, carbon dioxide emissions, and oil dependence as components was created and applied to every county in the continental United States. The results suggest that the current tax credit is too high since it does not create $7500 worth of public benefits using the benefits included in the analysis. Benefits vary regionally due to sources of electricity generation and existing air pollution levels with counties in the …

Video Game Huds: Information Presentation And Spatial Immersion, James Babu Aug 2012

Video Game Huds: Information Presentation And Spatial Immersion, James Babu

Theses

Researchers have analyzed various aspects of the video game experience; however, analysis of how the presentation of game status information affects the player's sense of immersion into the virtual environment has not been explored. This study aims to discover how feelings of immersion are affected by diegetic, or environmentally based, methods of presenting the player's status versus non-diegetic methods. Avid gamers were told to play two games, one diegetic based interface and the other a non-diegetic interface, to see how their spatial immersion experiences differed between the two designs. In addition to the use of questionnaires to evaluate the level …

Subpixel Temperature Estimation From Single-Band Thermal Infrared Imagery, Sarah Paul Aug 2012

Subpixel Temperature Estimation From Single-Band Thermal Infrared Imagery, Sarah Paul

Theses

Target temperature estimation from thermal infrared (TIR) imagery is a complex task that becomes increasingly more difficult as the target size approaches the size of a projected pixel. At that point the assumption of pixel homogeneity is invalid as the radiance value recorded at the sensor is the result of energy contributions from the target material and any other background material that falls within a pixel boundary. More often than not, thermal infrared pixels are heterogeneous and therefore subpixel temperature extraction becomes an important capability. Typical subpixel estimation approaches make use of multispectral or hyperspectral sensors. These technologies are expensive …

Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer Aug 2012

Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer

Theses

Extensive urban development has led to the resurgence of green roofs. These vegetated roofs provide significant ecological and economic benefits including mitigation of the urban heat island effect, reduced storm-water runoff, lower energy costs, increased biodiversity, and improved aesthetics, as well as food production and security. Urban agriculture and food security are becoming increasingly important factors of the green roof renaissance. Due to weight load limitations of potential buildings, the ability to produce quality food in shallow media, less than 6.75 cm, could encourage green roof food production. The effectiveness of a commercially available green roof media and a vermicompost …

Is It Really More Expensive To Eat Healthy Foods? A Case Study Approach, Laura Elizabeth Hilliard Aug 2012

Is It Really More Expensive To Eat Healthy Foods? A Case Study Approach, Laura Elizabeth Hilliard

Theses

Many believe eating healthfully is too expensive and therefore opt for less expensive, lower quality foods. There are disputes between research groups and government as to whether nutrition policies should be adjusted. Federal programs have made strides in combating food insecurity through nutrition help and education programs, but many question if the amount of skills in food selection and preparation can compensate for limited incomes. Regardless, the low incomes' diets are inadequate to meet nutritional needs and people are suffering the consequences. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent one can follow the USDA Food Guide Pyramid …

In total, 144 female community survivors, psychology students, and other participants were recruited from a large mid-western university (mean age = 29.3). The online survey was composed of a demographic questionnaire, the Revised Sexual Experiences Survey (Koss et al., 2007), Emotion Thermometer (Mitchell, 2001), …

Positron Emission Tomography Utilization Development In Hong Kong, Steve Sitt Aug 2012

Positron Emission Tomography Utilization Development In Hong Kong, Steve Sitt

Theses

The introduction of clinical Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in oncology in the 1990s has substantially changed the management of patients with cancer and become one of the diagnostic modalities with the fastest growth worldwide (Buck et al., 2010). The major hurdle delaying the proliferation of PET was partly due to its high initial investment and insufficient third-party reimbursement (Keppler & Conti, 2001). Hong Kong, a region with about half the economic strength of Germany, was able to sustain a higher ratio of PET-CT scanners than that of Germany. Through the study of the PET utilization in Hong Kong, this research …

Electromechanical Actuator Bearing Fault Detection Using Empirically Extracted Features, Rahulram Sridhar

Theses

Model parameter estimation when coupled with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Bayesian classification techniques form a potentially effective fault detection scheme for Electromechanical Actuators (EMAs). This work uses parameter estimation algorithms based on linear system identification methods, derives a novel feature extraction algorithm based on PCA and analyzes its performance through simulations and experiments. A Bayesian classifier is used to create well defined EMA health classes from the extracted features. Research contributions on fault detection in EMAs are significant because EMA faults and their detection are not yet well understood. Potential future applications - such as in primary flight control …

Interactionist Labeling: Formal And Informal Labeling's Effects On Juvenile Delinquency, Daniel Ryan Kavish Aug 2012

Interactionist Labeling: Formal And Informal Labeling's Effects On Juvenile Delinquency, Daniel Ryan Kavish

Theses

This thesis critically reviews prior labeling theory research concerning juvenile delinquency and crime; it adds to current work by using contemporary data. Labeling events are described in detail to provide an overall understanding of where labels originate, who is casting the label, and what research suggests concerning different types of labels. An interactionist labeling model is tested to explain levels of juvenile delinquency among a nationally representative sample of American adolescents: the first three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Finally, negative binomial regression models are estimated in order to better explain the dynamic relationship …

A Method For Designing Efficient Routes For Home Healthcare Agencies Considering Uncertain Future Demand, Nisha Nataraj Jul 2012

A Method For Designing Efficient Routes For Home Healthcare Agencies Considering Uncertain Future Demand, Nisha Nataraj

Theses

Faced with increasing demand for home health care that is rising faster than the supply of resources needed to deliver it and drastic budget cuts, many home care agencies are struggling to remain operational. There is a need for efficient routing that doesn’t compromise on the quality of care achieved when a patient is visited by the same nurse over the entire period of care, also known as care-giver continuity or continuity of care. Because care periods often last more than 60 days, care-giver continuity causes scheduling decisions to have a long-term impact by potentially restricting the agency from making …

Defending The Role Of Unconscious Intentions: A Response To Wegner, Hannah Bondurant Jul 2012

Defending The Role Of Unconscious Intentions: A Response To Wegner, Hannah Bondurant

Theses

Cognitive science has recently supported and popularized the idea that perhaps free will is but an illusion. With his theory of apparent mental causation, Daniel M. Wegner in particular proposes that our beliefs about intention and the control we exert over our actions are actually based upon other factors and usually occur retroactively. Since many of our actions are determined and preformed outside of awareness, the cause of said actions could then be difficult to locate. Part of Wegner’s argument lies in his assumption of brain activity and corresponding behavior as conscious and “controlled” or outside of awareness and unintended. …

Modeling A Solar-Heated Anaerobic Digester For The Developing World Using System Dynamics, Johanna Bentley Jul 2012

Modeling A Solar-Heated Anaerobic Digester For The Developing World Using System Dynamics, Johanna Bentley

Theses

Much of the developing world lacks access to a dependable source of energy. Agricultural societies such as Mozambique and Papua New Guinea could sustain a reliable energy source through the microbacterial decomposition of animal and crop waste. Anaerobic digestion produces methane, which can be used directly for heating, cooking, and lighting. Adding a solar component to the digester provides a catalyst for bacteria activity, accelerating digestion and increasing biogas production. Using methane decreases the amount of energy expended by collecting and preparing firewood, eliminates hazardous health effects linked to inhalation of particles, and provides energy close to where it is …
