The Significance Of Abstract Art In Self-Expression: A Study Developed By Analyzing Kandinsky's Black Lines And Producing Visual Juxtapositions, Keturah K. Bowles
The Significance Of Abstract Art In Self-Expression: A Study Developed By Analyzing Kandinsky's Black Lines And Producing Visual Juxtapositions, Keturah K. Bowles
Theses
This paper will contemplate how the creation of abstract art, a creative style born from the Avant-Garde movement of the 20th century by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, was imperative in the pursuit of artistic freedom. Additionally, it will seek to prove that abstraction is one of the unparalleled genres to utilize for self-expression in comparison to genres that uphold traditional art techniques, such as realism. This theory is further emphasized when considering abstract art in juxtaposition to the art standards maintained by the academy. Moreover, the research conducted to support the proposed theory falls into various categories, such as …
Web Of Sisterhood: Somehow Connected, Catherine Scott
Web Of Sisterhood: Somehow Connected, Catherine Scott
Theses
This thesis project is about the connection between female community (sisterhood) and art-making practices. This connection is explored through qualitative research, including research in art history, feminism, community interviews, and personal experience. The connection between sisterhood and art-making is expressed through the construction and development, as well as the visual elements, in the final project. Communication and collaboration with women in my community about the artwork and our connections as women shaped how the work would be constructed, as well as the imagery and colors used in the final piece.

Color Shift: A Graphic Design Process Book Exploring How Color And Motion Influence Emotional Perception And Brand Connection In Affordable Women's Fashion Jewelry, Elizabeth Voight
Theses
This study examines how manipulating color and motion within a single brand identity system influences consumer emotional response and brand consistency. Using a fictional modern jewelry brand, Quanta & Co., the research isolates color as the primary variable by applying nine distinct mid-range color palettes to identical layouts, logos, and structures across both print and digital touchpoints. These collateral assets include jewelry packaging, vehicle wraps, digital advertisements, and an animated logo. A quantitative survey was executed to capture real-time audience impressions regarding brand traits, perceived quality, and the overall alignment of each color variation with the brand's identity.
The findings …
Spikerff: Learning Forward With Layer-Local Plasticity And Semi-Hard Negatives, Karthik Tumkur Kumar
Spikerff: Learning Forward With Layer-Local Plasticity And Semi-Hard Negatives, Karthik Tumkur Kumar
Theses
Effective contrastive learning relies on choosing useful, informative "hard" negative samples. Current hard negative sampling methods designed for traditional artificial neural networks (ANNs) are, in general, computationally costly and are ill-suited to account for the temporal structure relevant to neuromorphic data. To tackle these issues, in this work, we formulate a similarity-guided semi-hard negative sampling strategy for neuromorphic computing based on spiking neural networks (SNNs). We propose SpikeRFF (Spiking Recurrent Forward-Forward), a gradient-free and unsupervised recurrent spiking framework that combines layer-local Forward-Forward learning with semi-hard negative selection and temporally structured negative construction. Positive samples are encouraged to produce high goodness, …
Valorisation Potential Of Microalgae As A Sustainable Source Of Lipids And Health Promoting Compounds, Bozena Mccarthy
Valorisation Potential Of Microalgae As A Sustainable Source Of Lipids And Health Promoting Compounds, Bozena Mccarthy
Theses
The transition toward a circular bioeconomy requires sustainable strategies for managing and valorising food industry effluents while reducing reliance on environmentally damaging raw materials such as palm oil, which is associated with deforestation, biodiversity loss and greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions. Microalgae represent a promising platform for converting nutrient rich industrial by-products into biomass and high-value compounds for food, nutraceutical and bio-based applications. Dairy processing generates large quantities of whey, creating environmental challenges due to its high organic load. Improved whey treatment and valorisation strategies are therefore essential for enhancing sustainability in food production systems. In this study, the biomass productivity …
Characterizing The Relationships Between Hydrology, Soil Biogeochemistry, And Green Ash Canopy Structure In Emerald Ash Borer-Affected Wetlands, Eva Switala
Theses
The invasion of the emerald ash borer (EAB; Agrilus planipennis) has caused mass mortality of native ash trees (Fraxinus spp.), devastating forested wetlands in the northeastern United States. Fifteen years post-introduction, the long-term ecological shifts and "new normals" of these ecosystems remain poorly understood. This project characterized patterns in EAB-affected forested wetlands by evaluating soil characteristics, biogeochemical cycling, hydrology, and green ash canopy across 12 sites with varying initial ash presence. Results revealed a clear separation between biogeochemically active and less active sites. Hydrologic differences emerged as a key driver of biogeochemical cycling, with higher soil moisture significantly increasing rates …
The Effect Of Aquatic Pollution On (Green) Microbial Communities In The Greater Rochester Area, Francesca Molee
The Effect Of Aquatic Pollution On (Green) Microbial Communities In The Greater Rochester Area, Francesca Molee
Theses
Retention ponds are built in urban and suburban areas to catch the polluted runoff that would otherwise go into highly-valued freshwater ecosystems like the Great Lakes. They therefore make ideal model ecosystems to consider the effect of chemical, common pollution on aquatic communities. To understand the impact this aquatic pollution on both microbial community composition alongside green microbial physiological stress response, water column and sediment microbial communities were sampled from three retention ponds, and three non-retention, created ponds. The first part of this study focused on the microbial community composition. Using 16s amplicon sequencing on and subsequent analysis using Qiime2, …
A Reproducible Hdr-Native Psychophysics Infrastructure For Color Science Research, Fernando Voltolini De Azambuja
A Reproducible Hdr-Native Psychophysics Infrastructure For Color Science Research, Fernando Voltolini De Azambuja
Theses
Color science psychophysics measures the human visual system by relating controlled visual stimuli to observer responses, often through forced-choice paradigms such as two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) (Kingdom and Prins 2016). These studies require stimuli specified in physically meaningful units, technically correct display emission, and reproducible execution (Fairchild 2013; Lin et al. 2023). In practice, graduate-level experiments often rely on bespoke MATLAB or Python scripts, standard dynamic range (SDR)-first toolchains such as Psychtoolbox and PsychoPy, manual stimulus duplication, and incomplete capture of calibration, colorimetric state, and display capability (Brainard 1997; Peirce et al. 2019). These limitations increase experimental friction and create …
Advanced Mathematical Modeling And Data-Driven Techniques For The Diagnosis Of Diabetes Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring (Cgm) Data, Farah Morsi
Theses
Diabetes mellitus is a major and growing health challenge, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) provides high-resolution time-series data that capture detailed glucose fluctuations over time. However, conventional CGM summary measures, such as mean glucose, standard deviation, and time-in-range, may not fully describe the nonlinear temporal structure of glucose dynamics.
This thesis investigates nonlinear dynamical approaches for analyzing CGM time series, with a focus on recurrence-based analysis and ordinal-network analysis. Recurrence-based methods, including recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), are used to characterize geometric and temporal patterns in reconstructed phase space, while ordinal networks …
On The Fractional Laplacian Type Operator, Maysam Abdulnaser Zain
On The Fractional Laplacian Type Operator, Maysam Abdulnaser Zain
Theses
In this thesis, we study analytical structures arising from Dunkl theory and their
applications to harmonic analysis and fractional Laplacian operators. Dunkl operators are differential–difference operators associated with finite reflection groups, providing a natural generalization of the classical Fourier analysis through the introduction of root systems and multiplicity functions. Within this framework, several classical transforms appear as special cases of the (k,a)-generalized Fourier transform. We study the generalized Fourier transform ₖ,ₐ, its kernel Bk,a (x,y), and the associated translation operator and convolution structures. Using these tools, we construct the corresponding heat …

Sea-Ice Observation In The Arctic By The Arab Satellite 813, Simulated By The Radiative Transfer Model ‘Sciatran’, Tuqa Mohsin Al Hajri
Theses
The purpose of this research is to explore the spectral behavior of sea ice and to understand how Arctic sea ice surfaces appear when they are observed with a hyperspectral sensor. This is crucial because sea ice changes a lot during the melt season, and different surface types can sometimes look similar to a human eye, but physically they are different. It is thus essential to identify the spectral differences between these surfaces. The main objective of this study is to examine how the spectra of white ice and melt ponds change when their physical and optical properties are varied, …
Evaluation Of Medical Instrument Reliability For The Heath And Maddox Components Of The Accommodative-Vergence System, Jacob Chabuel
Evaluation Of Medical Instrument Reliability For The Heath And Maddox Components Of The Accommodative-Vergence System, Jacob Chabuel
Theses
Binocular vision relies on the coordination of near response triad composed in part by the vergence and accommodative systems. Binocular dysfunctions linked to these systems impact the quality of life of those affected by complicating day-to-day tasks and leading to further health concerns. Clinical evaluations that diagnose dysfunctions and tailor therapies rely on subjective methods, creating a need for a reliable, quantitative, measurement tool. This is achieved using a haploscope, a tool that quantitatively measures and observes binocular vision to identify deficiencies within the eye. Modernization of a haploscope system, measurement of the Heath and Maddox components of the visual …
The Effects Of Osha State Plans And State Gdp On Occupational Injuries And Illnesses In The United States, Ahmad Abdel Rahman Mohammad Amoorah
The Effects Of Osha State Plans And State Gdp On Occupational Injuries And Illnesses In The United States, Ahmad Abdel Rahman Mohammad Amoorah
Theses
Workplace safety in the United States is governed by a system in which some states operate under federal OSHA oversight, while others administer their own OSHA-approved safety and health plans. This duality raises questions about whether state-level control leads to variation in safety and health outcomes. Economic conditions have also been shown to influence workplace injury rates, yet the interaction between safety and health regulations and local economies remains underexplored. Understanding these relationships is critical to protecting workers in occupational settings. The effects of OSHA state-plan status and state-level economic activity on occupational injury and illness rates across the United …

Polarimetric Terahertz Imaging For The Measurement Of Birefringence In Plastic, Rachel Cohen
Theses
Birefringence offers a promising way to observe stress concentration in materials such as glass and plastic, and thereby to identify weaknesses. Polarimetric imaging can be used to measure the birefringence of material, so long as the material is transparent to the light being used for the imaging. In this research, 2D Terahertz imaging was investigated as a means of measuring the birefringence of plastics that are opaque to visible light but transparent to THz radiation, for the eventual purpose of analyzing the residual stress present. In order to do so, two separate terahertz cameras were characterized for potential use in …

Social, Economic, And Environmental Sustainability Of Small-Scale Hydroponic Farms, Alexa Genevieve Kaminski
Theses
Controlled environmental agriculture (CEA) is well-positioned to contribute to a more sustainable food system. It has the potential to offset some of the negative impacts of conventional agriculture through its ability to optimize the crop growing environment, locate production closer to population centers, and take advantage of non-arable land. The focus of this dissertation is one type of CEA: the hydroponic container farm (HCF). The HCF grows crops using only water and fertilizer inside a 40-foot shipping container that can be located anywhere in the world. Manufacturers are optimistic about this farm’s abilities, but little research exists that investigates the …

Comparative Analysis Of Standard Building Materials In Earth-Sheltered Architecture, Austin Greifenkamp
Theses
In an industry that significantly contributes to the ever-increasing environmental destruction witnessed globally, architects are responsible for ensuring human comfort without sacrificing environmental health. Earth-sheltering, an architectural design technique that uses earth to partially or fully cover a building, results in reduced operational energy consumption but introduces structural components to increased loads and higher levels of humidity. Using the material properties and life cycle data of wood, concrete, and steel, this study analyzes the viability of each material in a below-grade environment and the resulting embodied impact of a typical earth-sheltered structure. To align the results of this research with …
The Impact Of Employment On Sense Of Belonging And Metacognitive Awareness: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Undergraduate Students’ Mathematical Performance, Erin Ryan
Theses
This study investigated how employment intensity affects two critical factors for academic success: a student’s sense of belonging and their metacognitive awareness (the ability to monitor and manage their own learning). Using a mixed-methods approach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, we analyzed survey data through multi-level modeling and conducted qualitative interviews to capture the personal experiences of employed students. Results reveal that students working off-campus for more than eleven hours a week showed significantly lower sense of belonging and metacognitive awareness scores than unemployed students. However, on-campus employment did not show the same effect. Both quantitative and qualitative results …

Confederate Women In The Field Of Nursing And Their Impact On Southern Women’S Roles In Society, Laura Leigh L. Prater
Confederate Women In The Field Of Nursing And Their Impact On Southern Women’S Roles In Society, Laura Leigh L. Prater
Theses
During the Civil War, Confederate women had the opportunity to go to work as nurses. The majority of these women had never been allowed to take on roles beyond the domestic sphere in antebellum society. Despite most of these women having limited medical training, they developed an expertise in nursing, extraordinary organization skills and gained respect for their achievements. Their achievements proved that women were able to do far more than many in the South believed prior to the war. This paper will show how the demands of war opened doors of greater opportunity for women in the South for …

Uncovering Cytoskeletal Length Control From Growth Trajectories Using Sparse Dynamical Modeling, Carson Hearn
Uncovering Cytoskeletal Length Control From Growth Trajectories Using Sparse Dynamical Modeling, Carson Hearn
Theses
Understanding the governing equations of biological filament dynamics is essential for predicting cellular behavior, yet these equations are often difficult or impossible to derive directly from first principles. This thesis investigates the use of Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) as a unified, data-driven framework for discovering, validating, and refining governing equations from both simulated and experimental data. Focusing on biological filament processes, including growth, disassembly, and severing, this work is designed not only to apply SINDy, but to systematically demonstrate that it is a reliable and generalizable tool for modeling complex biophysical systems. To establish this, SINDy is first …

Complexity And Usability Of Digital Healthcare, Theresa Haas
Complexity And Usability Of Digital Healthcare, Theresa Haas
Theses
Digital services, ranging from online shopping and banking to government services and healthcare, are rapidly taking over human-provided services. The accessibility and usability of such digital services may not allow older adults to make use of them, making automation a barrier to access societal services. This is especially critical with many healthcare-related services and apps. This research is framed around two interrelated constructs, task complexity and individual complexity, the latter influenced by cognitive decline in older users. The experiment has three representative tasks of different task complexity and the measure of individual complexity which is understood through previous knowledge of …

Theses
At the Crossing is a body of photographic work that stemmed from daily walks through the Genesee Valley Park. Having moved to a new and unfamiliar place, these walks were a way of drawing closer to the city of Rochester and the people who call it home. In the process, I discovered the vitality and democratic function of the park and its relationship to the larger city. In this space, people gather, celebrate, rest, and dream. It exists as a wild refuge, a pressure valve within the overall function of the city. In this way, it is one of the …

Vectra: Medication Cart System Designed For Nurses, Chris Dimovski
Theses
Medication administration is a critical phase of patient care where errors are most likely to occur, often contributing to adverse drug events and increasing risk to patient safety. At the same time, rising levels of nurse burnout highlight the growing cognitive demands placed on healthcare professionals. Although systems such as medication carts, digital records, and safety protocols are intended to reduce errors, they operate independently rather than as a connected system. This leaves nurses responsible for connecting each step, relying on memory and constant adjustment throughout the workflow. This thesis focuses on the medication administration phase and looks at how …
