An Evaluation Of The Good Behavior Game Using An Interdependent Group Contingency With Middle-School Children With Ebd, Shanice D. Harvey May 2018

An Evaluation Of The Good Behavior Game Using An Interdependent Group Contingency With Middle-School Children With Ebd, Shanice D. Harvey

Theses

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of an interdependent group contingency commonly referred to as the “good behavior game” (GBG) on reducing disruptive behaviors in a dedicated classroom for students with emotional behavioral disorder (EBD). The participants were four eighth-grade middle school students, with a primary diagnosis of EBD. The intervention targeted inappropriate and disruptive behaviors during two class periods (math and science), as well appropriate alternative behaviors. The class was divided into two teams, with the four participants divided evenly amongst both teams. If a team met the criterion for both inappropriate and appropriate behavior during experimental sessions, each …

Investigating The Etiology Of Preschoolers' Somatic Symptoms And Internalizing Problems: A Twin Study, Matthew Jamnik May 2018

Investigating The Etiology Of Preschoolers' Somatic Symptoms And Internalizing Problems: A Twin Study, Matthew Jamnik

Theses

This study investigated the etiology of preschoolers’ somatic symptoms and internalizing problems, using a twin sample. A specific focus was placed on the genetic (i.e., DRD4 and 5-HTTLPR) and environmental (i.e., SES, household chaos, family conflict, and maternal emotional stability) factors that were hypothesized to be associated with these problems. This project also explored the possible gene-environmental interactions (GxE) that may exist among these contributors. It was hypothesized that children who are at greatest risk due to their genotype, environment, or a combination of the two would display elevated somatic symptoms and internalizing problems, compared to children who were less …

Claiming Space, Gwendolyn Anne Davies May 2018

Claiming Space, Gwendolyn Anne Davies

Theses

The self-portraits in Claiming Space are presented as large, glossy full-color posters, pinned directly to the gallery wall. The photographs are photographs of me, a plus-sized woman, as I want to be seen confronting and challenging the ideals of beauty, desire, and representation in contemporary culture and media. Using an active and direct gaze, I present a plus-sized woman with power and strength even in vulnerability. I am challenging the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women, especially fat women, and asserting the right to be seen.

Protein Vaccines Against Acute Otitis Media Caused By Nontypeable Haemophilus Influenzae In A Murine Model, Mark Zavorin

Theses

Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is one of the major organisms in the upper respiratory nasopharyngeal microbiota. In addition to its role as a commensal in the nasopharynx, NTHi is also the cause of sinusitis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Most relevant to this work, NTHi is one of the major causes of otitis media (OM), an inflammatory disease of the middle ear that affects 65-300 million children globally each year. In the US, acute OM (AOM or ear infection) is the most common reason for prescribed antibiotics. Due to the dramatic increase in antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria, there is currently an …

Tracing Vulnerabilities Across Product Releases, Adriana Sejfia May 2018

Tracing Vulnerabilities Across Product Releases, Adriana Sejfia

Theses

When a software development team becomes aware of a vulnerability, it generally only knows that the last version of that software product is vulnerable. However, today most software products have more than one version being actively used at a time. Garnering information on which versions contain a vulnerability, and which do not, is crucial for the users, to know which versions of a software product are safe to use, and also for the developers, to know where to apply the patch. The patch, i.e. the fix of the vulnerability, contains valuable information in the form of changes made to the …

Self-Regulation Within The Wearable Device Industry And The Alignment To Device Users’ Perceptions Of Health Data Privacy, Tegan Ayers May 2018

Self-Regulation Within The Wearable Device Industry And The Alignment To Device Users’ Perceptions Of Health Data Privacy, Tegan Ayers

Theses

Health data privacy has become increasingly pertinent as the Internet-of-Things (IoT), specifically, health-monitoring, wearable devices, has become more advanced. Today’s regulatory framework allows wearable device companies to self-regulate how data is collected and used, thus leaving consumer, health data at risk of possible mishandling or abuse. Consequently, this research sought to examine whether data privacy practices adopted by major wearable manufacturers align with consumer expectations about these devices and the data they collect. Both consumers’ understanding of health data privacy and the corresponding tech companies’ stance on protecting consumer privacy were evaluated by performing crowd-sourced surveys and a thematic analyses …

Eighteen Mile Creek, Allison Nichols May 2018

Eighteen Mile Creek, Allison Nichols

Theses

Eighteen Mile Creek is a body of work consisting of cyanotype chemigrams that explores the space of a Superfund site located in Lockport, New York. The works installed in the gallery are large in scale and abstract. They are created solely through the interactions between photographic chemistry, contaminated water collected from Eighteen Mile Creek, and light. The cyanotypes are bound in contradictions, engaged in a push and pull with the viewer. Ranging in tone from deep blue to harsh yellow, they make visual gestures towards landscapes and topography, but also towards toxicity and warning. Further contradictions exist. While the prints …

Discriminative Feature Extraction Of Time-Series Data To Improve Temporal Pattern Detection Using Classification Algorithms, David Stolze May 2018

Discriminative Feature Extraction Of Time-Series Data To Improve Temporal Pattern Detection Using Classification Algorithms, David Stolze

Theses

Time-series data streams often contain predictive value in the form of unique patterns. While these patterns may be used as leading indicators for event prediction, a lack of prior knowledge of pattern shape and irregularities can render traditional forecasting methods ineffective. The research in this thesis tested a means of predetermining the most effective combination of transformations to be applied to time-series data when training a classifier to predict whether an event will occur at a given time. The transformations tested on provided data streams included subsetting of the data, aggregation over various numbers of data points, testing of different …

However, to what extent was Artpark an alternative institution? This thesis investigates the extent …

Market Transformation For Value-Retention Processes As A Strategy For Circular Economy, Jennifer D. Russell May 2018

Market Transformation For Value-Retention Processes As A Strategy For Circular Economy, Jennifer D. Russell

Theses

There is increasing global interest in the application of circular economy as a tool for enabling the decoupling of economic growth from environmental degradation. Despite this growing interest, there is a lack of in-depth insight about the quantified potential benefits that value-retention processes (VRPs) – direct reuse, repair, refurbishment and remanufacturing – can contribute to circular economy and improved resource efficiency. In this assessment, product-level production impacts are bridged with economy-level insights about market, regulatory, technological and infrastructure conditions, to demonstrate and quantify the essential role of value-retention processes within circular economies. Three representative products were selected from each of …

Oliver's Rumination: A Short Video Game About Failure, Shaemus Spencer May 2018

Oliver's Rumination: A Short Video Game About Failure, Shaemus Spencer

Theses

Studying and working in a creative field requires designers and artists to produce consistently high-level, novel work. In some cases, taking risks to pursue new concepts, methods, or products is highly valued. At the same time, not all companies, students, or individual artists have the resources to risk should their exploration fail. What remains is a crossroad: creative professionals and students are rewarded for taking risks, but are often unable to do so because the possibility of failure carries too much weight.

Changing the way creators see failure could revolutionize the way they work. By accepting and incorporating failure into …

Emergence Of Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriaceae In Abu Dhabi, 2009-2015, Aqdas Bilal Butt

Theses

The rapid emergence of carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) is a global phenomenon that has not spared the United Arab Emirates. However, unlike in most Western countries with similarly developed health care system, very little data have been available locally on the rate and dynamics of antimicrobial resistance in general, and that of CRE, in particular. Our laboratory has been collecting CRE isolates from Abu Dhabi hospitals since 2009. In the current study we subjected 394 such independent strains, representing 34.0% of the total CRE encountered, to a detailed analysis that included the determination of their antibiotic susceptibility profile, of the …

Social Media: On Tech-Caves, Virtual Panopticism, And The Science Fiction-Like State In Which We Unwittingly Find Ourselves, Michael Major Apr 2018

Social Media: On Tech-Caves, Virtual Panopticism, And The Science Fiction-Like State In Which We Unwittingly Find Ourselves, Michael Major

Theses

Making use of three historic philosophical thought experiments, this paper blends psychological perspectives with philosophical reasoning to show how social media is corrupting our perception of reality, the result of which is ultimately detrimental to society as a whole. This is accomplished by first using Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” to analyze and discuss the ways in which social media is limiting humanity’s access to real knowledge. Next, Michel Foucault’s analysis of punishment in its social context, Discipline and Punish, is used to discuss the ways in which social media is adversely affecting our behavior. Finally, Robert Nozick’s “Experience …

Driving Forces In Disclosure: Self-Disclosure Goals And Intimacy At The Podium, Layne Paubel Apr 2018

Driving Forces In Disclosure: Self-Disclosure Goals And Intimacy At The Podium, Layne Paubel

Theses

This study examined six underlying motivations (expression, self-clarification, social validation, relationship development, social control, and information sharing) for self-disclosure in a public speaking setting and a dyadic relationship setting. Five of these goals come from Derlega and Grzelak’s (1979) functional approach to self-disclosure and one is an additional goal examined by Bazarova and Choi (2014). This study found that the relative salience of self-disclosure goals in the public speaking classroom was identity clarification, information sharing, self-expression/relief of distress, social validation, relationship development, and social control. Findings indicate that the relative salience of goals in the dyadic relationship setting was self-expression/relief …

Sour rot is characterized by a distinct vinegar smell that is caused by the combination …

For The Sake Of The Intellect, Let Them Have Art: A Possible Reconciliation For The Value Of Mimetic Arts In The 'Republic', Breanna Liddell Apr 2018

For The Sake Of The Intellect, Let Them Have Art: A Possible Reconciliation For The Value Of Mimetic Arts In The 'Republic', Breanna Liddell

Theses

This paper explores the possibility of a cohesive philosophy that recognizes both Plato’s concern about art as a moral danger in the Republic and the aesthete’s—a worthy adversary—position of art as something worth preserving. Plato understood the arts as mimêsis, or imitative and representational. Additionally, this paper suggests that Plato’s take on art extends beyond the limited realm of the performative arts that depict the misguided actions of Greek heroes and gods and how those arts positively or negatively impact the educational development of a citizen of the Republic. Rather, I assert that what he means by “art” is …
