Barriers To Using Certified Interpreters In The Hospital Setting: The Hispanic Bilingual Nurse Experience, Misara S. Bambao
Theses
The law requires that certified interpreters are available to translate information to patients regarding their healthcare. Due to perceived barrier of time, Hispanic bilingual nurses are regularly called upon to fill this gap in communication. This study investigates the Hispanic bilingual nurse's perspective on being pulled from their primary assignment to translate for patients other than their own. The purpose of this study was to understand Hispanic bilingual nurses' perceptions and experiences translating at the bedside.

How Nurse-Led Clinics Improve Health Care Access, Rose Marie Alessandra C. Conos
How Nurse-Led Clinics Improve Health Care Access, Rose Marie Alessandra C. Conos
Theses
The project will seek to address how nurse-led clinics enhance access to health care services, lead to patient satisfaction, and offer inexpensive and quality health care services. To evaluate these variables, the project will research nurse-led clinics in different geographical locations, some urban areas, and some are rural areas. When one lives in an urban area, it does not necessarily mean that there are readily available resources for the individual. Rural areas are addressed because there are few hospitals, and some of the areas are not accessible to transportation. These patients may have chronic diseases, behavioral or psychiatric conditions, comorbidities, …
Conservation Of The Ambystoma Jeffersonianum Complex, Morgan Motherwell
Conservation Of The Ambystoma Jeffersonianum Complex, Morgan Motherwell
Theses
The Great Lakes region is home to the diverse genus Ambystoma, including the Blue Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale) and Jefferson’s Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum). These two species are relevant to conservation efforts because of unique hybrid populations. This hybridization creates offspring populations that are morphologically similar to the parental species. The hybrid populations are primarily all female lineages and are known as the Ambystoma jeffersonianum complex. Conservation interest in this hybrid complex stems from the fact that hybrid populations are not taxonomically recognized as separate species and therefore are not protected under the Endangered Species Act. To assess the contribution of …
Assessment And Deployment Of Genetic Tools For North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Kelsey Lawton
Assessment And Deployment Of Genetic Tools For North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Kelsey Lawton
Theses
North American River Otters (Lontra canadensis) once thrived in large numbers in most wetlands of North America. However, due to human pressures such as trapping, habitat loss and pollution, these carnivorous mammals have decreased in numbers significantly in the last 100+ years, becoming extirpated in many traditionally inhabited areas. The use of genetic data from molecular techniques (PCR, DNA sequencing) can guide the identification and management of populations used for relocations to better maintain genetic diversity in both wild and captive otter populations and help inform the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) breeding programs. Management organizations are concerned with …

Metals recycling is one of the oldest industries in the United States that now employs over 530,000 individuals. It has always played a significant role in the economy, contributing $109.78 billion to the US economy in 2018. Furthermore, recycling supplies extensive goods and services, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) reported that every year greater than 900M Mt of scrap (~2 billion pounds) are consumed by manufactures globally, equating to 40% of the raw material demand. Additionally, as climate change becomes a greater threat, we must seek practices to lessen our carbon footprint, and recycling helps to reduce the …
Improving Sub-Bandgap Carrier Collection In Gaas Solar Cells By Optimizing Ingaas Quantum Wells Using Strain-Balancing And Distributed Bragg Reflectors, Brandon Bogner
Theses
Bulk carrier collection in GaAs solar cells is limited by the GaAs bandgap of 1.42eV, leaving low-energy photons below 1.42eV uncollected. The addition of low bandgap materials allows for the collection of these ‘unreachable’ photons in a GaAs solar cell.In_(x)Ga_(1-x)As can have bandgaps between 0.354-1.42eV based on indium composition, allowing for tunable collection at longer wavelengths. Including thin 9.2nm In_(x)Ga_(1-x)As quantum wells in the i-region of a GaAs n-i-p structure enhances photon collection past the 870nm GaAs band edge, increasing current production and potentially leading to higher efficiencies. Increased current production in GaAs solar cells is especially valuable since GaAs …
Alzheimer's Disease, Media Representation, And Audience Reception, Taylor Dakota Thum
Alzheimer's Disease, Media Representation, And Audience Reception, Taylor Dakota Thum
Theses
The purpose of this study is to see how Alzheimer's disease and dementia are misperceived in the media, how this affects audience viewpoints, and how accurate depictions that challenge those stereotypes may or may not change audience perception. Common stereotypes depicted in the media include Alzheimer’s and dementia being one disease, only individuals older than 60 years old having this disease, and it being a slow and painful progression towards the end of life. Using Stuart Hall’s audience reception theory, I will see if viewers accept, negotiate, or oppose the media that challenges those stereotypes presented to them in contrast …
Material Use And Its Sustainability In The Automotive Industry, Ayomipo Arowosola
Material Use And Its Sustainability In The Automotive Industry, Ayomipo Arowosola
Theses
Among sectors in the United States, the transportation sector contributes the most to greenhouse gas emissions (USEPA, 2018) at 28%. A complex mix of market dynamics, demographics, and technological changes like material type (e.g. lightweighting techniques), fuel type (e.g. biogas), vehicle mode (e.g. internal combustion) and recyclability (Lewis et al., 2019) is employed to combat theses emissions. While these changes presumably effect linear level contributions and impacts, it is important to objectively determine their effects and impacts at a systems level. This research studied the material use implication of two major technological changes – lightweighting and electrification. The study involved …

Display technology has evolved in pursuit of perceptual pleasure by providing realism and visual impact. The endeavor of the evolution has brought HDR displays to the market. HDR displays, which have become the mainstream display technology recently, are considered not only the present but also the future of displays because of their daunting technical goals: A peak luminance of 10,000 cd/m^2 and near-monochromatic primaries. However, both positive and negative prospects in terms of perceptual aspects for future HDR displays coexist. On the positive side, it is expected that HDR displays will provide better image quality and more vivid color. On …
Comparative Dna Degradation Automation For Identifinders, Jennifer Pfaff
Comparative Dna Degradation Automation For Identifinders, Jennifer Pfaff
Theses
The degradation of DNA in forensic genetic genealogy can hinder timely results in victim or perpetrator identification. Identification of an unidentified victim, a “Doe”, involves analyzing the degraded DNA against reference genomes. Organizations like the DNA Doe Project and Identifinders currently manually compares the genomes in a spreadsheet with data input slowing down the investigative process. I propose a program to automate the data input and comparison to increase the speed at which Identifinders can continue their research into identifying victims. Comparative DNA Degradation Automation (CDDA) automates the process of creating a simulated degraded DNA profile in less than a …
Urban Farming Design In Los Angeles: An Adaptive Reuse Project In Response To Food Crisis And Housing Crisis, Pin-Han Su
Urban Farming Design In Los Angeles: An Adaptive Reuse Project In Response To Food Crisis And Housing Crisis, Pin-Han Su
Theses
As the world population is constantly growing and will reach 9 billion people by 2050, the current danger to the world's food supply system creates a severe challenge. By 2050, more populations will be living in the cities and creating higher demand on food supply, but the farmable lands on our planet could be much less because of climate change and urbanization. Agricultural leaders have argued that cities will need to produce food internally to respond to demand by increasing population and to avoid harmful pollution and unaffordable food prices. Architecture, as the most influential element affecting our daily life, …
Methane Emissions From Stormwater Ponds, Brianna Pollard
Methane Emissions From Stormwater Ponds, Brianna Pollard
Theses
Methane (CH4) is a powerful greenhouse gas that has a global warming potential 28 times larger than carbon dioxide (CO2) on a 100-year horizon. Methane emissions from inland freshwater sources are not as well understood as those from other sources; however, current estimates suggest that they account for a significant portion of global CH4 emissions. Emissions from inland waters are difficult to measure due to their high spatiotemporal variability, leading to high levels of uncertainty and a need for more CH4 flux data from these freshwater systems. Increased runoff associated with urbanization has led to construction of man-made inland waters …
