An Artist’S Playground: Building Bridges Between Children’S Education And Their Knowledge Of Art Through Multi-Modal Learning, Alice J. Cauchi
An Artist’S Playground: Building Bridges Between Children’S Education And Their Knowledge Of Art Through Multi-Modal Learning, Alice J. Cauchi
Theses
Not all museums welcome children as part of their main audience with open arms. Research suggests that experiencing museums as a child supports classroom learning and development, but only when the museums engage young children properly. This paper explores how incorporating multi-modal interactives into art museums can effectively engage children, ages 4 to 8, and build a foundation that supports lifelong learning. Drawing on ideas from early-childhood education, museum visitor-engagement studies, and interactivity sciences, this project results in a framework that guides art museums on how they can overlap play, interactives, and content to incorporate this age group effectively to …

Traditional And Machine-Learning Equalization Techniques For Bandwidth-Limited Short-Reach Optical Communication Channels, Abdullah Khawatmi
Traditional And Machine-Learning Equalization Techniques For Bandwidth-Limited Short-Reach Optical Communication Channels, Abdullah Khawatmi
Theses
This thesis investigates equalization techniques for bandwidth-limited short-reach optical communication systems, with a focus on Visible Light Communication (VLC) and Step-Index Plastic Optical Fiber (SI-POF) links. Commercial light-emitting diodes and photodiode receivers impose severe bandwidth constraints, inter-symbol interference, and noise sensitivity, which fundamentally limit achievable data rates. The work addresses these impairments through systematic evaluation of traditional digital signal processing–based equalizers and modern machine-learning-based post-equalization methods. The primary aim of this thesis is to enhance the achievable data rate and reliability of commercial short-reach optical links while maintaining practical computational complexity. Specifically, the objectives are to (i) design and experimentally …

Llm-Driven Mission Control And Autonomous Planning For Search-And-Rescue Uavs: A Simulation-Based Evaluation, Naser Bader Alsaedi
Theses
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used in search‑and‑rescue (SAR) missions, yet many systems still rely on fragmented software where mission design, perception, and flight control are configured separately. This thesis examines whether a unified AI‑driven framework can reduce configuration effort and operator workload in UAV‑based SAR operations. The proposed system integrates natural‑language mission specification using a large language model (LLM) (LLaMA 3.1), autonomous coverage planning, YOLOv8‑based victim detection, and PX4/MAVSDK control within a single architecture. Operators describe missions through free‑form text or a graphical interface; the model converts these descriptions into structured mission parameters that are automatically planned and …
Analysis Of A Coaxial Transmission Line Filled With An Orthorhombic Dielectric-Magnetic Medium, Fathima Manikunnath Abdul Akbar
Analysis Of A Coaxial Transmission Line Filled With An Orthorhombic Dielectric-Magnetic Medium, Fathima Manikunnath Abdul Akbar
Theses
Coaxial transmission lines are fundamental means for Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) wave propagation in RF, microwave and high-speed electronic systems. The study of transmission lines is often familiar when they are filled with isotropic materials; however modern engineered direction dependent materials reshape field distributions. In this thesis, we consider a coaxial transmission line of an inner radius and outer radius b filled with an orthorhombic dielectric-magnetic material, which is described by two anisotropy parameters αx and αy. The potential and field distributions are studied in relation to the ratio b/a as well as the anisotropy parameters αx and αy. Due to …
Breath-Based Detection Of Liver Cancer Biomarkers Using An Swcnt-Fet Nano-Biosensor: Quantumatk, Mohamed Mohieb Rashdan
Breath-Based Detection Of Liver Cancer Biomarkers Using An Swcnt-Fet Nano-Biosensor: Quantumatk, Mohamed Mohieb Rashdan
Theses
Early detection of liver cancer remains limited by the slow pace and invasiveness of current testing methods. This study proposes a single-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (SWCNT-FET) designed to detect hexanal—a volatile organic compound (VOC) elevated in liver cancer—directly from exhaled breath. The device is modeled in QuantumATK using a semi-empirical Extended Hückel Hamiltonian within the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) framework, emphasizing realistic contact physics by employing metallic SWCNT electrodes instead of conventional metal films. Zigzag channels with (11,0) and (12,0) chiralities are examined to analyze how geometry and contact matching influence charge transport. Simulations include current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and …
Comparative Evaluation Of Five Bacterial Strains For The Fermentation Of Camel Milk, Sifatun Nesa Ali
Comparative Evaluation Of Five Bacterial Strains For The Fermentation Of Camel Milk, Sifatun Nesa Ali
Theses
In this study, the comparative fermentation performance of lactic acid bacteria Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, Lb. helveticus, Lb. casei, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum in Camel Milk (CM) and Bovine Milk (BM) was investigated. Fermentations were carried out at 42°C for 48 hours, and was monitored through bacterial growth, titratable acidity, pH evolution, proteolytic activity, microstructural properties, and rheological characteristics. Although comparable bacterial viability was observed in CM and BM, acidification kinetics varied significantly between CM and BM (p < 0.05). Proteolysis was significantly higher in fermented CM than in BM (p < 0.001), with consistently greater o-Phthalaldehyde Assay (OPA) values in CM across all strains during fermentation (p < 0.001). Scanning electron microscopy revealed more porous, loose protein matrices in fermented CM than in BM, which supports the rheological results showing weaker gel networks and lower rheological strength in fermented CM. Among the tested bacteria, Lb. casei demonstrated superior adaptability, enhanced viability, balanced acidification, and favorable rheological properties in both milks. Overall, the results of this thesis demonstrate strain-specific fermentation responses and support the possible suitability of different starter cultures for improving the technological performance of fermented camel milk products.
Using Deep Learning To Increase Eye-Tracking Robustness, Accuracy, And Precision In Virtual Reality, Kevin Barkevich
Using Deep Learning To Increase Eye-Tracking Robustness, Accuracy, And Precision In Virtual Reality, Kevin Barkevich
Theses
Algorithms for the estimation of gaze direction from mobile and videobased eye trackers typically involve tracking a feature of the eye that moves through the eye camera image in a way that covaries with the shifting gaze direction, such as the center or boundaries of the pupil. Tracking these features using traditional computer vision techniques can be difficult due to partial occlusion and environmental reflections. Although recent efforts to use machine learning (ML) for pupil tracking have demonstrated superior results when evaluated using standard measures of segmentation performance, little is known of how these networks may affect the quality of …

Art Therapy In The Art Classroom, Sherry Williams
Theses
The integration of art therapy practices within the art classroom provides a transformative framework for supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of students. Research into these strategies demonstrates that creative practices allow students to manage stress and anxiety while fostering mindfulness, reflection, and self-expression. Art educators can create safe and supportive environments by incorporating therapeutic activities such as drawing mandalas, doodling, and engaging in collaborative projects. These methods prioritize the creative process over technical achievement, allowing students to communicate complex feelings that may be difficult to articulate verbally.
While art teachers are not licensed therapists, they can effectively implement therapeutic …
Engineering Human Microphysiological Models To Investigate Bacterial Extracellular Vesicle–Driven Endothelial And Blood–Brain Barrier Dysfunction, Louis P. Widom
Theses
Pathogenic bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) are nanoscale particles derived from bacteria that contain pro-inflammatory cargo. During bacterial infections, BEVs provoke the host inflammatory response and may cause widespread damage. Furthermore, antibiotic treatment can boost BEV production and thereby increase the number of toxic signals traveling through the circulatory system. This is especially dangerous in brain blood vessels since evidence suggests that BEVs may destabilize the protective blood–brain barrier (BBB), resulting in neuroinflammation associated with cognitive decline and development of neurological disorders. Our understanding of BEV interactions with the host remains limited, necessitating the development of in vitro models to better …
Optimizing Traffic Signal Timings Using Real Time Data Analytics, Hamad Abdulla Binsultan
Optimizing Traffic Signal Timings Using Real Time Data Analytics, Hamad Abdulla Binsultan
Theses
City traffic jams have become a major challenge for contemporary cities, causing delays, increased fuel consumption, and other environmental impacts. Conventional traffic signal controlling systems usually depend on fixed or preset signal plans that are incompetent to adjust themselves with changing traffic conditions. Traffic signal timings are optimized across the intersection health of the system by processing real-time data analytics. Through real-time data analytics, traffic flow efficiency is improved while waiting time at signalized intersections is reduced. Using traffic real-time data like vehicle counts, vehicle types, time of day and day of the week to see howtraffic behaves under different …
Model Free Sliding Mode Control For Uavs, Aashrita Mandalapu
Model Free Sliding Mode Control For Uavs, Aashrita Mandalapu
Theses
Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is a robust and adaptable control strategy recognized for its ability to withstand uncertainties, disturbances, and parameter variations. Although the straightforward implementation of SMC along with its insensitivity to modeling inaccuracies make it effective for a wide range of applications, it still relies heavily on an accurate system model. In dynamic environments where system characteristics vary over time, a model-independent SMC framework becomes necessary. So, a Model-Free Sliding Mode Control (MFSMC) approach is proposed as a compelling solution for complex nonlinear systems where deriving an accurate model is difficult. In contrast to conventional SMC approach, MFSMC …

Inflection Points In Academic Career Trajectories: Statistical Modeling And Interactive Visualization, Aicha Malouche
Theses
This thesis examines the temporal structure of academic career trajectories, with a particular focus on identifying non-linear patterns of research productivity and moments of maximum acceleration in scientific impact. Situated within the broader context of bibliometric evaluation, the study responds to long-standing limitations of aggregate and linear career models that obscure heterogeneity across disciplines and national research systems. Drawing on theories of cumulative advantage, life-cycle productivity, and structural stratification, the research seeks to clarify how and when elite researchers experience peak growth in impact over the course of their careers. The study is guided by four research questions: (1) when …
Stimuli-Responsive Chemotherapy For Glioblastoma: Sequence-Dependent Synergy Of Cold Atmospheric Plasma And Ultrasound With Cationic Lipo-Doxo, Alessandro Cazzolla
Stimuli-Responsive Chemotherapy For Glioblastoma: Sequence-Dependent Synergy Of Cold Atmospheric Plasma And Ultrasound With Cationic Lipo-Doxo, Alessandro Cazzolla
Theses
Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive, infiltrative astrocytic tumour in which pharmacotherapy remains constrained by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the heterogeneously altered blood brain tumour barrier, with additional limitations imposed by active efflux and the complexity of the tumour microenvironment. In this setting, externally addressable strategies that modulate transport and uptake at the site of disease are required. A stimuli-responsive chemotherapy platform was developed in which Lipo-DOXO was combined with two non-invasive physical modalities, low-frequency ultrasound (US) and cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), to enhance intratumoural delivery while limiting off-target effects. Liposomes were produced by thin-film hydration followed by a controlled, …

Microplastics In St. John, United States Virgin Islands Sediments: Methodological Approaches And Variability Of Microplastics Concentrations And Accumulation Rates, Henry B. Arbaugh, Sarah C. Gray, Dimitri Deheyn
Theses
Sediment samples were collected from a near shore and reef site in Coral Bay, St. John, United States Virgin Islands (USVI) from 2007-2016, using tube sediment traps. These samples provide an opportunity to study microplastics (MPs) in an area where no previous MP studies have been performed. Most sedimentary MP studies utilize benthic samples which can only measure MP concentrations (#MP/g or #MP/mL sediment), while sediment traps can provide MP accumulation rates (#MP/cm2/day) as a function of time. However, the methods used for extracting MPs from benthic samples have not been tested using sediment trap samples whose characteristics, …

Assessing Localized Recovery And Synchrony Of An Endangered Wetland Species., Aiyana Reissman
Assessing Localized Recovery And Synchrony Of An Endangered Wetland Species., Aiyana Reissman
Theses
The state and federally endangered light-footed Ridgway’s rail (LFRR; Rallus obsoletus levipes) is central to regional conservation, yet the drivers of its population fluctuations remain poorly understood. The fragmented nature of coastal wetlands in Southern California is threatening the existence of endemic species like the LFRR. Tidal inundation, severe storms, and overpredation threaten the survival of LFRR. This study addresses population fluctuations by analyzing the spatial and temporal drivers of LFRR populations to inform effective, site-specific management.
To do this, a 45-year (1980–2024) LFRR census data set across 16 wetlands throughout its range in California was synthesized. A multi-faceted …

This study examined the knowledge and perceptions of human milk bank donation among pregnant, lactating, and postpartum women in Rochester, NY, and in communities near HMBANA-affiliated milk banks, and assessed if there is a correlation regarding the proximity of milk banks. A cross-sectional study design was used, and participants completed a …
Impact Of Oxidative Stress On Mapk Signaling In Human Pancreatic Ductal Cell Line, Alexis Fink
Impact Of Oxidative Stress On Mapk Signaling In Human Pancreatic Ductal Cell Line, Alexis Fink
Theses
The main processes linked to diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and obesity are impaired insulin production and glucose intolerance. The imbalance between antioxidant defense systems and oxygen-reactive species are known as oxidative stress. Understanding oxidative stress and its substantial effects on diabetes is crucial. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can activate mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). We hypothesize that altered MAPK phosphorylation and hence downstream signaling is associated with changes in oxidative stress in the human pancreatic duct epithelial cell line (H6C7). While H6C7 cells are often engineered to be cancerous precursors, the natural phenotype of these cells and their expression …
Exploring Interpenetrating Networks Derived From Compostable Polymers In Separations, Hailey Holshouser
Exploring Interpenetrating Networks Derived From Compostable Polymers In Separations, Hailey Holshouser
Theses
The increasing demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable water treatment technologies drives the development of membranes that work to balance mechanical durability, tunable selectivity, and long-term stability. In this exploratory work, an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) membrane system composed of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) was developed to provide a more compostable and compatible platform for advanced separation applications. While the compostability of the entire framework was not tested, the dominant presence of PBAT in the matrix makes the membrane intrinsically favorable for composting. Mechanochemical Ionic Electrochromic Generators (IEGens) were synthesized and incorporated into the PBAT backbone for …

The sensitivity of cloud and precipitation formation is expected to be enhanced over urban areas due to persistent sea-breeze forcing. This study combines surface observations, satellite data, and numerical modeling to investigate the impacts of urbanization in the Miami Metropolitan Region (MMR) on surface meteorology, cloud formation, and precipitation. Satellite observations reveal urban expansion of approximately 348 km², along the western boundary of the MMR. These areas also exhibit statistically significant increases in land surface and air temperatures. Geostationary satellite data show enhanced morning cloud formation over the MMR, while increasing rainfall and interannual variability in cloudiness are observed along …
Effects Of Energetic State On Male Mating Preferences In Poeciliid Fishes With Differing Mating Strategies, Katherine E. Taylor
Effects Of Energetic State On Male Mating Preferences In Poeciliid Fishes With Differing Mating Strategies, Katherine E. Taylor
Theses
Reproduction is energetically costly, making condition (i.e., energetic state) a potential factor in shaping reproductive behavior. However, its role in male mate choice remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigate condition-dependent effects on male mate choice in two species of Poeciliids: one coercive species (Gambusia affinis) and one courting species (Xiphophorus hellerii). Diet treatments were used to manipulate male and female conditions, and male preferences were assessed in dichotomous-choice tests using animated female stimuli. X. hellerii males showed a preference for high-condition females, whereas G. affinis males showed no overall net preference. Diet influenced preference in G. affinis, with high-fed males …
The Influence Of Defendant Mental Illness Characteristics On Prosecutorial Decision Making, Claire Elise Martin
The Influence Of Defendant Mental Illness Characteristics On Prosecutorial Decision Making, Claire Elise Martin
Theses
As most criminal cases are now resolved via plea-bargaining, research on legal decision making has extended beyond the jury to evaluate judges, defense attorneys, and prosecutors. Although legal actors are obliged to remain objective and dispassionate, extralegal factors regarding defendant characteristics (e.g., age, gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic class) can influence case outcomes. Extant research on the effect of defendant mental health status and defendant demeanor on sentencing outcomes in court hearings is limited. Therefore, the present experiment solicited 134 prosecutors in a vignette study designed to assess how extralegal characteristics, specifically those related to mental illness, may affect the punitiveness of …
Modeling And Identification Of Thermal Interactions In Lithium-Ion Battery Modules, Saima Alam
Modeling And Identification Of Thermal Interactions In Lithium-Ion Battery Modules, Saima Alam
Theses
The recent development of lithium-ion battery technology has fueled its adoption in electric vehicles (EVs) as the primary power source due to its high energy and power density. However, the high energy density comes at the cost of higher safety requirements. To ensure the lithium-ion battery pack's operational safety, performance optimization, and longevity, a Battery Management System (BMS), an electronic controller, is employed. Recent reports of battery pack overheating, fire, and explosion in EVs expose the limitations of the BMS in detecting the abnormalities and preventing them from propagating to other cells. To address these limitations, in the first part …
