A Comparison Of Field-Delineated Wetlands To The New Jersey Freshwater Wetland Maps, David P. Moskowitz

Theses

A comparison of the New Jersey Freshwater Wetland maps to field-delineated wetlands was undertaken to assess the accuracy of the Freshwater Wetland maps. The evaluation revealed substantial differences in the amount of wetland acreage on the Freshwater Wetland maps compared to field-verified wetlands. Forty study sites comprising 21,877 acres (8,854h) were evaluated. Of these, twenty-seven were overmapped (more wetland acreage than was field-verified), and thirteen were undermapped. Forty-three percent had mapping discrepancies at or above fifty percent; when modified land designations were included as wetlands, the number of sites at this threshold increased to fifty percent.

Paper copies of the …

Understanding Cyclic Behavior In Tourism Destinations: Analysis Of Theories And Concept For A New Strategic Management Model, Beverly Foster

Theses

The purpose of this study was to gather and analyze information on lifecycle theories that may provide tourist destinations with a better understanding on how to have more control over their long-term sustainability. An extensive literature review was conducted that resulted in identifying and analyzing four applicable models and theories. As a result of this analysis, the researcher concluded that these four theories and models do not independently nor collectively offer a single, comprehensive working model for destinations to use in evaluating and monitoring their strategy for long term success. To help bridge this gap and point the way toward …

The Evolution Of Internet Interconnections, Sean Butler Jan 2000

The Evolution Of Internet Interconnections, Sean Butler

Theses

In 1995, the NSF officially shut down the NSFNet backbone, thereby ending the nascent Internets early architecture as a single backbone network. Today, the Internet is a group of loosely interconnected networks run by many diverse companies. These interconnections are in no way controlled by any industry or government agency, and are therefore held together only by the market demands of the Internet community. Although the FCC has traditionally maintained a stance of "unregulation" of all information and computer networks, they have increasingly show interest in ensuring the rapid deployment of Internet access. In addition, as more and more critical …

Theses

This thesis paper is an integral and complementary part of my thesis exhibition "A la conquista . . .” Its purpose is to enhance my audience's understanding of the interests and vicissitudes that have motivated me to undertake such a challenging task. This project has its origin in an earlier autobiographical photographic project. Through it I developed an interest in visually questioning aspects related to my past and present: How did I become the individual I am? And what aspects of my experience define my identity? My parents are of different nationalities, I was born in Puerto Rico, and then …

Transforming Nature Of Place And Route 280, Peteris Ratas Aug 1999

Transforming Nature Of Place And Route 280, Peteris Ratas

Theses

This thesis studies the nature of place, which is a specific, identified location in space, in the conditions of driving in a car on a highway. This study opposes the common opinion that highways destroy identity of a specific location and they have only utilitarian role. This thesis wants to prove that on Route 280 exist a possibility for an identity of a location and that the highway is a place, but the traditional dimensions of a place are modified by high-speed travel in a car. It will analyze actual observations on Route 280.

Traditionally, space was inhabited at slow …

Interactive And Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Molli Noland May 1999

Interactive And Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Molli Noland

Theses

An interactive proof involves two parties, the prover and the verifier. The goal of the proof is for the prover to convince the verifier that some instance of a decision problem is true. A zero-knowledge proof is an interactive proof where the only information learned by the verifier of the proof is the outcome of the proof. This thesis contains a theoretical overview of interactive and zero-knowledge proofs and describes experiments with implementations of some of them. Two examples of interactive proofs from number theory are given, a protocol for quadratic non-residues and a protocol for subgroup non-membership. The third …

Simulation Of Spectra Signatures Of Chemical Leachates From Landfills, Jason Hamel Jan 1999

Simulation Of Spectra Signatures Of Chemical Leachates From Landfills, Jason Hamel

Theses

Chemical leachates from landfills can turn into dangerous hazards if they are not identified and properly disposed. Currently, these chemicals are identified in the laboratory with samples hand collected from contaminated sites. This is economical for small sites but quickly gets expensive and time consuming for larger facilities that can cover hundreds of acres or multiple sites. This study examines the feasibility of using new hyperspectral detectors and computer processing to autonomously identify the presence of these leachates and greatly simplifying the monitoring process for these large sites. The effect of even low concentrations of many chemicals requires the identification …

The Impacts And Implementation Of Integrated Marketing Communications, Min-Fang Wu

Theses

In the current market place, there are two points that occupy the marketer's attention. One is the necessity of integration; the other is the importance of communications. Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) is the crystallization of the two thoughts.

Because the entire market place is changing so rapidly, factors that result in a successful business are too complicated. Integration of all kinds of market resources is no longer a marketing theory which is discussed by academics. It has become a necessary solution to business.

On the other hand, the popular issue of communication does not simply reflect the deep relationship of …

A Meeting Of Minds : Coalitions, Representations And American Non-Governmental Organizations In The Brazilian Amazon, Lise Fernanda Sedrez May 1998

A Meeting Of Minds : Coalitions, Representations And American Non-Governmental Organizations In The Brazilian Amazon, Lise Fernanda Sedrez

Theses

American environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have created and spread in the last decade a particular representation of the Amazon rainforest among the public and policy-makers. This new representation contrasts with earlier American representations of the Amazon in that it has been more responsive to local (Amazon) concerns and agendas. This greater responsiveness is a direct result of strategic coalitions with Brazilian NGOs by must US NGOs. US NGOs may avoid charges of "environmental imperialism" and obtain larger legitimacy in their action in the Amazon by opting for the coalition strategy. However, this option also stresses the differences between two environmental …
