Southern Illinois Gis Mapping For Next Generation 9-1-1, William Lee Barrett
Southern Illinois Gis Mapping For Next Generation 9-1-1, William Lee Barrett
Theses
Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1) will revolutionize how the public accesses emergency services and will alter the technological landscape within which existing public safety agencies operate. A lack of systematic methodologies exists for quality control of the required geospatial data layers for NG 9-1-1 systems. The primary objective of this study was to develop and systematize a highly accurate NG 9-1-1 GIS database for Counties of Southern Illinois (CSI). The project goals included mapping relevant geospatial data layers required by and based on NENA standard data formats; conducting data quality control and standardization; and providing standardized spatial datasets for NG …

Morphological, Phylogenetic, And Ecological Analyses Of The New Model Grass Species Setaria Viridis (Poaceae) And Its Close Relative Setaria Faberi, Daniel J. Layton
Morphological, Phylogenetic, And Ecological Analyses Of The New Model Grass Species Setaria Viridis (Poaceae) And Its Close Relative Setaria Faberi, Daniel J. Layton
Theses
Species limits as defined by herbarium taxonomists are nearly always based on intuitive morphological comparisons with little concrete data or statistical analysis. Setaria viridis (tribe Paniceae, subtribe Cenchrinae), an emerging model organism for the study of C4 photosynthesis, is one such inadequately defined species. In order to evaluate its relationship with the morphological intergrading Setaria faberi, a “total data” approach was taken. Statistical morphology, cytology, molecular phylogenetics, and growth experimentation were employed to examine the putative species boundary in this group. Principal components analysis of 70 morphological characters in 85 individuals revealed consistent separation between the two species in morphospace, …
Knowing For: A New Path In Testimonial Justification, John Allan Scott Camacho
Knowing For: A New Path In Testimonial Justification, John Allan Scott Camacho
Theses
John Greco believes that any satisfactory theory of testimonial knowledge should explain its practical nature—how testimonial knowledge pervades across cases in a way that much of our knowledge is dependable. He offers six cases: children know from their mothers, teachers (simple), friends know from each other and citizens (tricky), job interviewers and interrogators know from interviewees (difficult). In §2, I consider Greco’s formulation of these cases into the Reasons and Trust (RT) Dilemma: reductionism is too demanding for simple cases and non-reductionism is too easy in difficult cases. In §3, I begin by reframing Greco’s RT Dilemma. I will argue …
Cross-Enterprise Access Control Security For Electronic Health Records: Technical, Practical And Legislation Impact, Mark Rodzinka
Cross-Enterprise Access Control Security For Electronic Health Records: Technical, Practical And Legislation Impact, Mark Rodzinka
Theses
In this thesis we investigate the relationship of security, privacy, legislation, computational power in relation to Cross-Enterprise User Assertions (XUA), which allows us to develop the recommendations for the appropriate, architecture, functionality, cryptographic algorithms, and key lengths. The evolution of health records from paper to electronic media promises to be an important part of improving the quality of health care. The diversity of organizations, systems, geography, laws and regulations create a significant challenge for ensuring the privacy of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), while maintaining availability. XUA is a technology that attempts to address the problem of sharing EHRs across enterprise boundaries. …
Using Gis Databases To Simulate Night Light Imagery, Joshua Zollweg
Using Gis Databases To Simulate Night Light Imagery, Joshua Zollweg
Theses
The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model and other image simulators provide the ability to utilize detailed, artificial scenes to generate spectrally and spatially realistic simulated imagery. Simulated imagery is useful in a myriad of ways, such as sensor modeling, algorithm performance assessment, and others. Actually making synthetic scenes, however, is often a time consuming process, requiring the manual placement of the many objects required to define the scene. This is particularly true for scenes of large spatial extent. Proposed is a technique to generate large-area night scenes for DIRSIG. This is accomplished by using freely available …
Motivation And Attitudes Toward Learning French In The University's Foreign Language Classroom, Brianna Johnson
Motivation And Attitudes Toward Learning French In The University's Foreign Language Classroom, Brianna Johnson
Theses
In second language research and pedagogy, motivation has been labeled as a key factor for success (Clément, 1980; Dörnyei, 1998; Tremblay & Gardner, 1995; Deci & Ryan, 1985); namely, language learners with high levels of motivation will be more successful than those who exhibit more negative attitudes towards learning the TL. Through classroom observations, student survey responses and personal interviews conducted in a beginner-level university French class, this study attempted to determine broad motivational patterns using Gardner's (1982) binary integrative and instrumental model, and then determine specific origins for these motivations. Four interviewees were selected: two with high instrumental and …
Improving The Reliability Of Wind Power Through Spatially Distributed Wind Generation, Samuel Martin Fisher
Improving The Reliability Of Wind Power Through Spatially Distributed Wind Generation, Samuel Martin Fisher
Theses
Wind power is a fast-growing, sustainable energy source. However, the problem of wind variability as it relates to wind power reliability is an obstacle to its large-scale deployment. It is possible to improve the reliability of wind power by interconnecting wind generation. In this study, wind power plants within the Midwest ISO were aggregated to examine the effect on reliability. Wind speed data from the North American Regional Reanalysis were used to calculate wind power data. It was found that the reliability of interconnected wind power was improved relative to individual wind power plants in both the short-term and the …
A Framework For The Intergration Of System Engineering And Functional Analysis Techniques To The Goal And Scope Of Life Cycle Assessment, Maria Fumagalli
A Framework For The Intergration Of System Engineering And Functional Analysis Techniques To The Goal And Scope Of Life Cycle Assessment, Maria Fumagalli
Theses
With the increased concern over the impact that products and processes have on the environment, tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) have been developed to assess environmental impacts. However, several issues are present in this tool; chief among them is the difficulty of comparing LCA studies. The attributed reasons for this issue are the lack of standardized assumptions and practices, the definition of the functional unit and the identification of reference flows. In this work, it is hypothesized that system engineering and functional analysis concepts are a promising approach to provide guidelines for system definition, system boundary definition, and …

Perceived Risk Of Homeland Security Incidents: The Insignificance Of Actual Risk Factors, Melissa R. Haynes
Perceived Risk Of Homeland Security Incidents: The Insignificance Of Actual Risk Factors, Melissa R. Haynes
Theses
Contingency theory, with regard to risk of homeland security incidents and homeland security preparedness, has received considerable empirical support. In past research, risk has been measured subjectively as agency executives' perceived risk of specific homeland security incidents occurring within their jurisdictions. This study examines actual risk, using the objective risk factors of experience with past natural hazards, social vulnerability, and urbanization. These risk factors, used in combination, have been significantly associated with terrorism-related homeland security incidents in the United States, and are used in risk assessment models of natural hazards. Contrary to expectations, the results of this study indicate that …
Through Place, Sarah Newman
Through Place, Sarah Newman
Theses
Through Place is comprised of diverse, sometimes un-idyllic landscapes. Many of the pictures contain a trace--an alteration to the land, a specter of human presence. Yet these marks are pictured inclusively; the scenes are explored with interest and without judgment. They offer a reformulation of the division between the human and the natural, wherein "the natural" draws the largest circle. The images are made in geographically and culturally diverse places (from the Peruvian Amazon to ski mountains in California). "Place" becomes replaced by interpretation, fiction: representations that intermingle with our own agency, expectations, and memories.

Automobility, Matthew Chung
Automobility, Matthew Chung
Theses
Cars are machines with which we have complicated and ambivalent relations. Automobility considers the car as vehicle in multiple senses: as a vehicle of mobility and constraint, of representation and rituals, of communication and cultural meaning, of production and power, of desire and destruction. The artwork and research are rooted in an examination of my own relationship to the car, of relations I have observed in other people, and an exploration of the spaces, places, and practices designed for cars.
An Integrated Physics-Based Approach To Demonstrate The Potential Of The Landsat Data Continuity Mission (Ldcm) For Monitoring Coastal/Inland Waters, Nima Pahlevan
Theses
Monitoring coastal or inland waters, recognized as case II waters, using the existing Landsat technology is somewhat restricted because of its low Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) as well as its relatively poor radiometric resolution. As a primary task, we introduce a novel technique, which integrates the Landsat-7 data as a surrogate for LDCM with a 3D hydrodynamic model to monitor the dynamics of coastal waters near river discharges as well as in a small lake environment. The proposed approach leverages both the thermal and the reflective Landsat-7 imagery to calibrate the model and to retrieve the concentrations of optically active components …

The Chicago Method Of Excavation At Kincaid, Jessica Ruth Howe
The Chicago Method Of Excavation At Kincaid, Jessica Ruth Howe
Theses
The creation of the University of Chicago archaeological field schools in 1934 at the Kincaid site in southern Illinois resulted in the dissemination of a standard excavation method, often referred to as the "Chicago Method", across the United States, primarily in the East. Before the field schools, there was no standard practice for excavating Eastern archaeological sites and little was written about the excavation methods that were used. During and after the field schools, archaeologists began to use similar excavation methods and also began to keep better records of their fieldwork. This thesis determines exactly what the "Chicago Method" of …

A Novel Approach To Engineering Structures Of A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (Sofc): 3d Direct Write Technology, Prasanna Khatri-Chhetri
Theses
This thesis centers on the use of 3D direct write printing processes to produce Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) structures having engineered porosity and macro structure. The objective of the work presented here is to be able to locally control porosity in the anode and cathode structure using 3D direct write printing methods. It is well understood that grading the electrodes enhances the SOFC's performance. A hierarchically graded porous electrode structure, varying from smallest pores at the electrode/electrolyte interface to largest pores at electrode/gas interface can be printed via 3D direct write methods. Layers as thin as 15µm have been …
Hunger For The Hungry: Understanding And Benefitting The Global Hungry Through Installation Art And Post-Digital Interactive Design, Doug Burnett
Theses
Remember when your dad used to tell you not to waste your vegetables because people in Africa were starving? And remember how you looked down at those mushy brussels sprouts and said, “Let them eat it then!” Well, you should. In fact, if everyone did, we would effectively end world hunger.
How can this story be told? Installation art has the potential to make a powerful, tangible impact on participants but on relatively few people. Interactive design can reach many hut often with a shallow impact. What can be accomplished through a new fusion of these two media?

Theses
Being able to accurately map forest carbon is a critical step in the global carbon cycle modeling and management process. This project is aimed at enhancing the current methodologies used for forest carbon mapping, and applying a method to account for any errors produced. By doing so, more accurate decisions can be made based on the knowledge gained from forest carbon maps; such as policy decisions on how to manage forests, or how to mitigate climate change. The use of remotely sensed images, in combination with Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data, is one such way of doing this. This …
