System Engineering Analyses For The Study Of Future Multispectral Land Imaging Satellite Sensors For Vegetation Monitoring, Zhaoyu Cui
Theses
Vegetation monitoring is one of the key applications of earth observing systems. Landsat data have spatial resolution of 30 meters, moderate temporal coverage, and reasonable spectral sampling to capture key vegetation features. These characteristics of Landsat make it a good candidate for generating vegetation monitoring products. Recently, the next satellite in the Landsat series has been under consideration and different concepts have been proposed. In this research, we studied the impact on vegetation monitoring of two proposed potential design concepts: a wider field-of-view (FOV) instrument and the addition of red-edge spectral band(s). Three aspects were studied in this thesis:
First, …
Understanding Culture Through Traditional Chinese Fairy Tales: A Study On The Effects Of Chinese Fairy Tale Characters On Audience Perception Of Culture, Bochuan Li
Theses
Classic of Mountains and Seas is probably one of the most ancient books about geography. The history of this book dates back to the Zhou Dynasty (1134 BC to 256 BC) or even earlier. Classic of Mountains and Seas is structured with 18 fascicles and has remained generally unaltered since the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368). This book is not a narrative; it details descriptions of locations in the mountains, seas, lands, and wilderness. The descriptions are usually about medicines, monsters, and geological features. Many of the descriptions are very mundane. Chapters follow the same pattern, and the whole book consists of …

The Embrace - Design For Elderly, Meng Liu
Theses
The elderly requires special care, especially those who live in China and living alone. This age group faces physical, mental and emotional challenges, one of which is loneliness. This paper explores the help people age 65-75 in China need to reduce their loneliness due to their children living away from them. The proposed solution is to encourage them to meet new people and keep them busy; then reducing their isolation. One such solution, a bench, is designed to curb the loneliness of elders by providing a platform to connect with each other and promoting their health through physical exercise, comfort, …
Empirical Satellite Characterization For Realistic Imagery Generation, Nilay Vijay Mokashi
Empirical Satellite Characterization For Realistic Imagery Generation, Nilay Vijay Mokashi
Theses
There is an increasing interest in the use of machine learning deep networks to automatically analyze satellite imagery. However, there are limited annotated satellite imagery datasets available for training these networks. Synthetic image generation offers a solution to this need, but only if the simulated images have comparable characteristics to the real data. This work deals with analysis of commercial satellite imagery to characterize their imaging systems for the purpose of increasing the realism of the synthetic imagery generated by RIT’s Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model.
The analysis was applied to satellite imagery from Planet Labs …
Online News Coverage About Fraud And Self-Defensive Behavior In China, Congxi Wang
Online News Coverage About Fraud And Self-Defensive Behavior In China, Congxi Wang
Theses
This study explores the role of online news media in directing people’s behavior in China. Previous literature shows that Chinese tend to be suspicious or hostile towards strangers and those outside their network. This study assumes that this self-defensive behavior was caused by negative portrayal of strangers in Chinese online news media. A survey and a qualitative content analysis were conducted to understand how the exposure to crime news affects people’s perception of strangers and public safety in China, then causes self-defensive behavior in China. The finding shows consistency between survey responses and media coverages about strangers, which establishes the …

Automating The Crowd-Mapping Workflow With Deep Learning, Lasith Niroshan
Theses
Maintaining updated maps in an ever-changing built environment is important for supporting modern society in many ways. The usage of online crowdsourced maps in particular has gained importance in a wide range of recent location-based applications (route planning/navigation, urban planning, real estate, tourism, etc). However, both traditional map production methods and updating today’s online maps suffer from early obsolescence due to their largely manual map production/update workflows. Significant research efforts have focused on refining techniques to identify changes in raster satellite images, aiming to improve and streamline map production processes. Concurrently, the surge in Internet usage has led to a …

Sankofa : Framing Afrofuturistic Dialectical Utopias In N.K. Jemisin's The Fifth Season, Nisi Shawl's Everfair, And Nnedi Okorafor's Binti, Jasmine A. Moore
Theses
This project explores a variety of utopian constructions via the work of N. K. Jemisin, Nisi Shawl, and Nnedi Okorafor in order to demonstrate that Afrofuturism’s hopeful optimism is a lesson for present and future realities. Each vision of utopia performs a necessary critique and evaluation of time in relation to historical constructivism that is insightful for all readers who must understand, in full, the myriad ways that Afro-centered narratives have enhanced the genres of Speculative and Science Fiction. In earnest, Afrofuturism offers to the world an attempt to think globally through excavations of the past, and, therefore, joins other …
The Motivation To Learn : Engaging Students In Pre-Modern Western Education, James Putman
The Motivation To Learn : Engaging Students In Pre-Modern Western Education, James Putman
Theses
Apathy among learners in secondary education classrooms is a modern problem but it has an interesting past. This paper assumes that unmotivated learners have always been a difficulty and uses a historical analysis to investigate how educators in the pre-modern world effectively motivated and engaged students. Using primary sources from scholars and educators of the pre-modern era a comparison is made to what modern pedagogical experts consider to be effective engagement strategies. Historical context for this comparison is provided within a chronological education narrative of Western civilization beginning with Ancient Greece and concluding with the Early Modern Period. The evidence …

Resilient Housing Design For Tsunami Prone Andaman And Nicobar Islands In India, Sabyasachi Das
Resilient Housing Design For Tsunami Prone Andaman And Nicobar Islands In India, Sabyasachi Das
Theses
Human settlement along coastal areas has grown dramatically over the last two decades. Unfortunately, coastal areas are prone to natural disasters caused by climate change and tectonic shifts underwater in the adjacent water bodies, resulting in loss of life and property. Tsunami is a form of natural disaster which occurs because of earthquakes under oceans and seas creating large waves which flood or wash out any coastal cities or islands located in the area impacted.
In 2004 the Indian Ocean Tsunami had an enormous impact on the coastal cities in Southeast Asia causing loss of thousands of lives and making …
Assessing Equivalent Temperature Trends In Major Eastern Us Cities, Mercedes Lissette Gomez-Jacobo
Assessing Equivalent Temperature Trends In Major Eastern Us Cities, Mercedes Lissette Gomez-Jacobo
Theses
Summer (JJA) temperature (T) and equivalent temperature (TE) for 18 of the largest cities in the eastern United States are investigated for two time periods: 1948-2014 and 1973-2014. Because temperature provides an incomplete description of lower tropospheric heat content, we supplement with TE, which also accounts for the energy associated with moisture. An auxiliary investigation using air mass data from the Spatial Synoptic Classification (SSC) augments the investigation of T and TE trends. The trend analysis revealed significant trends in Tmin at all stations over the 67-year time period and over most stations for the shorter (41-year) period. Minimum TE …
Living In Place: A Study Of Vitality Through Sense Of Place, Susan M. Wylie
Living In Place: A Study Of Vitality Through Sense Of Place, Susan M. Wylie
Theses
The built environment can respond to human needs and influence behaviors. An approach to design that grows from essential human conditions arguably is a preferable means of structuring the built world in a responsible and sustainable manner. Although new and innovative building technologies can achieve great strides in sustainability, underlying and fundamental human needs and behaviors may be an equally important source of inspiration and creativity in the built environment.
This thesis addresses social and psychological needs of the aging population in three communities in the vicinity of Rochester, New York. Through understandings of sense of place, the inquiry is …
Estimating The Range Shift And Harvesting Intensity Of Junipers In Bhutan (Eastern Himalaya), Rinchen Namgay
Estimating The Range Shift And Harvesting Intensity Of Junipers In Bhutan (Eastern Himalaya), Rinchen Namgay
Theses
The authors of more than 97% of the scientific publications on climate change agree that global temperature has increased in the last six decades and is caused by human beings via emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This phenomenon has altered natural ecosystem functions, causing many species to shift to a more suitable habitat. Throughout the world, because of recent climate warming, many forms of range shift associated with climate warming has occurred. While animals can move as warming happens, plants being stationary organisms cannot move, so the difference in the distribution of different plant life stages is an …

Spatial And Temporal Deformation Pattern Of The Brain From Blunt Trauma, Abdus Ali
Spatial And Temporal Deformation Pattern Of The Brain From Blunt Trauma, Abdus Ali
Theses
It is widely accepted that under extreme loadings the soft tissue of the brain will deform inside the skull, creating large amounts of both stress and strain on the tissue. This can result in a focal injury, or in the case of acceleration and deceleration, diffuse injuries. Any attempt at understanding the underlying mechanisms and effects of TBI, have to start by focusing on what is actually occurring within the brain. The objective of this experiment is to record differences in the spatial and temporal patterns of deformation within the brain during blunt trauma when changing impact parameters. A linear …
Numerical Simulation For Identification Of Insects Using A Cw Lidar System, Christo Videlov
Numerical Simulation For Identification Of Insects Using A Cw Lidar System, Christo Videlov
Theses
Mosquitos are the most common vector of disease in the world, causing millions of deaths a year. While curing the diseases they cause is one approach to this problem, another could be to avoid the mosquitos in the first place. Knowing their flight patterns, location, and population in one area could aid in this. Additionally, classifying the mosquitos in an area would be helpful. The age and sex of the mosquito is important to find as they affect the chances of the insect carrying diseases such as malaria or yellow fever.
Many current methodologies to monitor insects are based on …
Searching For Color In Black & White: Epistemic Closure, The Rit Archives, And The Colonial Roots Of White Invisibility, Andrew James
Searching For Color In Black & White: Epistemic Closure, The Rit Archives, And The Colonial Roots Of White Invisibility, Andrew James
Theses
When examining an image, a viewer often focuses on what they see and less often on what they are able to see. Nowhere is this as true, and as problematic, as it is with the visual representation of persons of African descent. This study describes how problematic photographic representation was used as a powerful semiotic tool in the Victorian age conquest of the other, was exported to early Hollywood (creating a lucrative hate-based industry), and was then pushed back into the cultural recesses, settling finally into systemic forms of modern oppression, empowered by the invisibility of whiteness. Images from the …

A content analysis was conducted to identify potential differences in the characteristics of sources appearing in stories shown on the three national evening news broadcasts of ABC World News, CBS Evening News, and NBC Nightly News during the first four months of the 2008 Financial Crisis. The names, titles, affiliations, and societal sectors of each on-camera, named individual were identified and analyzed for their differences and frequencies of appearance. The study found the government sector was the most frequently appearing sector, and members of the House of Representatives appeared far more than any other government officials. Though the evening network …
Quantifying The Rates And Spatial Distribution Of Recent Sedimentation Within The Hydrologically Connected Floodplains Of The Middle Mississippi River, Usa, Using Digital Elevation Models And Dendrogeomorphology, Julia Kay Ryherd
Theses
The construction of levees along the Mississippi River [MR], beginning in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, have isolated the river along many segments from its floodplain. Sediment from the river is currently deposited in the hydrologically connected floodplain [HCF], the area between the channel margin at low water and the levees. Researchers have studied the amount and rates of sediment deposition along the Upper and Lower Mississippi River segments from the headwaters to Pool 22 and from the Ohio River to the delta; however, no such assessments have been undertaken along the Middle Mississippi River [MMR]. This study attempts to fill …

Characterizing Resident Space Object Earthshine Signature Variability, Jared D. Van Cor
Characterizing Resident Space Object Earthshine Signature Variability, Jared D. Van Cor
Theses
There are three major sources of illumination on objects in the near Earth space environment: Sunshine, Moonshine, and Earthshine. For objects in this environment (satellites, orbital debris, etc.) known as Resident Space Objects (RSOs), the sun and the moon have consistently small illuminating solid angles and can be treated as point sources; this makes their incident illumination easily modeled. The Earth on the other hand has a large illuminating solid angle, is heterogeneous, and is in a constant state of change. The objective of this thesis was to characterize the impact and variability of observed RSO Earthshine on apparent magnitude …
The Effect Of Watershed Runoff And Sediment Resuspension On Turbidity And Sediment Deposition In St. John, Us Virgin Islands: Implications For Watershed And Marine Development And Restoration In Bays With Coral Reefs, Stephen E. Campbell
Theses
In the US Virgin Islands (USVI), land-based (terrigenous) sedimentation has been identified as a major cause of coral stress. Development, such as the building of unpaved roads in steep coastal watersheds, has increased sediment yields and marine terrigenous sedimentation by up to an order of magnitude above background levels. When activated during storm events, ephemeral streams transport sediment from the watershed to coastal waters. Once deposited on the seafloor, resuspension of benthic sediments can further increase turbidity and deposition. However, isolating the relative contributions of runoff and resuspension to turbidity and deposition using conventional sediment trap monitoring has been challenging. …
Examining The New York State Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative’S Alignment With Several Theoretical Perspectives, Jamie Dougherty
Examining The New York State Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative’S Alignment With Several Theoretical Perspectives, Jamie Dougherty
Theses
This research examines how well New York State’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative aligns with four theoretical domains: subculture of violence, deterrence, rational choice/situational crime prevention, and implementation theories. It reviews how procedural justice and community integration align with these theories and the evidence-based strategies that GIVE sites implement. Sites are grouped for analysis, and their characteristics are described. The literature review describes each theoretical domain’s core principles as they pertain to GIVE. It shows that the theories can be compatible and that their integration is difficult but would likely make the initiative more effective. The primary research questions …
