Enhancements To The Xns Authentication-By-Proxy Model, Peter D. Wing Jan 1990

Enhancements To The Xns Authentication-By-Proxy Model, Peter D. Wing

Theses

Authentication is the secure network architecture mechanism by which a pair of suspicious principals communicating over presumably unsecure channels assure themselves that each is that whom it claims to be. The Xerox Network Systems architecture proposes one such authentication scheme. This thesis examines the system consequences of the XNS model's unique proxy variant, by which a principal may temporarily commission a second network entity to assume its identity as a means of authority transfer. Specific attendant system failure modes are highlighted. The student's associated original contributions include proposed model revisions which rectify authentication shortfalls yet facilitate the temporal authority transfer …

Automated Knowledge Acquisition Tool For Identification Of Generic Tasks, Arlene J. Buck

Theses

Recent research in the Knowledge Acquisition (KA) field, centers on defining a formal methodology for the KA process. This research includes the following goals: automating the KA process to decrease the KA time constraint; applying psychological techniques to extract the underlying structure of the expert's knowledge; and defining expertise in terms of "generic tasks" to yield possible knowledge organizations and strategies for the implementation of the expert system. This thesis provides an overview of the benefits and concerns of an automated KA system, psychological scaling techniques as they apply to KA, and the relevance of generic tasks. A generic task …

Free Space Laser Communications On The Macintosh Computers, Sohrab Modi Jan 1990

Free Space Laser Communications On The Macintosh Computers, Sohrab Modi

Theses

Lasers have proved their reliability in high speed communications through fibre optics. The disadvantage with fibre optics is the high cost and the need for a cable to connect the sender to the receivers, hence making it impractical to have fibre optic cables over large distances. The move today is to communicate between points with a free space laser ( ie. a beam unbounded by cables). Semi conductor lasers as used in fibre optic cables are generally not strong enough to communicate over very large distances. Hence a high power laser is used with a modulation technique to transmit this …

Quantitative Determination Of Polymerase Chain Reaction Product For Hiv-1, David Brewer Latart Jan 1990

Quantitative Determination Of Polymerase Chain Reaction Product For Hiv-1, David Brewer Latart

Theses

A method to detect and quantify polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product from a DNA target fragment associated with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was developed. The current method to detect PCR product is by Agarose Gel Electrophoresis and staining with ethidium bromide, but quantitation is by the operator's estimation. As a result of this project, the PCR product can be detected by High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and the amount of product can be determined by using an internal standard. By detection of the PCR product on the HPLC and subsequent quantitation, the efficiency of the PCR can be determined. Samples …

Automated Boundary Detection Of Echocardiograms, Rolando Raqueño Jan 1990

Automated Boundary Detection Of Echocardiograms, Rolando Raqueño

Theses

Two-dimensional echocardiograms of the left ventricle of the heart have been used to produce three-dimensional wire frame reconstructions of the inner wall of the left ventricle chamber. Currently, this process is accomplished by tracing the boundary of the images manually after applying simple image processing algorithms. This manual interaction is a very tedious and time consuming step in the three-dimensional and four-dimensional reconstruction process. It would be desirable to remove as much operator interaction as possible from the process to improve repeatability and decrease throughput time.

This thesis investigated and implemented several basic and novel image processing algorithms which automatically …

Simulation And Analysis Of A Digital Scanning System, Eugene A. Rogalski Jan 1990

Simulation And Analysis Of A Digital Scanning System, Eugene A. Rogalski

Theses

The analysis and simulation of the motion of a digitally-controlled digital imaging system is presented. The dynamic system consists of a scanning carriage, power transmission elements, a prime mover, and a control subsystem. The prime mover is a permanent magnet DC motor that is positioned by a direct digital control system. The scan carriage motion is mathematically modeled and simulated using ACSL and DADS simulation software. T he simulation results are compared to empirical data. It is shown that the dynamic response of the actual scan system can be predicted quite well using such simulations. Furthermore, these simulations can aid …

Distributed Object-Oriented Discrete Event Simulation, Barbara Hendry Jan 1990

Distributed Object-Oriented Discrete Event Simulation, Barbara Hendry

Theses

This paper presents criteria for an 'ideal' simulation language, compares four traditional simulation languages to this ideal and concludes that an object-oriented approach to simulation comes closer to the ideal than the traditional procedural approach. It also examines how the object-oriented approach can be very beneficial for distributing a simulation problem among several machines. A distributed object-oriented package is described and a manufacturing example written and explained using this package.

Expert Systems In Typography, David B. Fisher Jan 1990

Expert Systems In Typography, David B. Fisher

Theses

Electronic publishing systems are providing authors with a tremendous amount of power formerly only available to printers: the choice of typographic design and layout. However, many authors use this power without the proper background, with potentially disastrous results. We have developed a prototype expert system that provides users of electronic publishing systems with the printer's knowledge in computer form in one narrow area of the publishing field to aid them in preparing their publications.

Word Hypothesis Of Phonetic Strings Using Hidden Markov Models, Jeffery W. Engbrecht Jan 1990

Word Hypothesis Of Phonetic Strings Using Hidden Markov Models, Jeffery W. Engbrecht

Theses

This thesis investigates a stochastic modeling approach to word hypothesis of phonetic strings for a speaker independent, large vocabulary, continuous speech recognition system. The stochastic modeling technique used is Hidden Markov Modeling. Hidden Markov Models (HMM) are probabilistic modeling tools most often used to analyze complex systems. This thesis is part of a speaker independent, large vocabulary, continuous speech understanding system under development at the Rochester Institute of Technology Research Corporation. The system is primarily data-driven and is void of complex control structures such as the blackboard approach used in many expert systems. The software modules used to implement the …

Crt-Based Dialogs: Theory And Design, Jonathan Levine Jan 1990

Crt-Based Dialogs: Theory And Design, Jonathan Levine

Theses

CRT (cathode ray tube) based, direct selection dialogs for computing machines and systems were apparently a cure for issues like ease of learning and ease of use. But unforeseen ~ and probably unforeseeable problems arose as increasingly sophisticated systems and dialogs were developed. This paper describes some of the emerging problems in CRT-based dialog design, develops theories about why they occur, and discusses potential solutions for them as a basis for future research. This investigation also provides a survey of the research into what makes programming and programming languages difficult, and what makes them simple.

Penthesilea: Woman As Hero, George Totskas Jan 1990

Penthesilea: Woman As Hero, George Totskas

Theses

It is my intention to create a visual epic drama with a woman as its hero. This Female hero will go through a journey that will metaphorically correspond to points of conflict of womanhood (through the ages) with institutions of power. The viewer is called to interact with the artwork on an aesthetic level first. Then he/she is invited to explore the story line - a combination of the artwork. Finally, the viewer is challenged to interpret the drama by using the titles of each individual piece.

Design And Implementation Of A Systolic Array To Solve The Algebraic Path Problem With The Specific Instance Of The Transistive And Reflexive Closure Of A Binary Relation, David Gene Mccall

Theses

The Algebraic Path Problem (APP) has many practical instances to be solved. The general solution by Robert and Trystram (1986) will be discussed along with the mapping and operation of the algorithm to a systolic array. The specific instance of the APP, the transistive and reflexive closure of a binary relation, will be implemented with a discussion of the different stages ranging from the logic equations to a method of the fabrication.

Shift-Invariant Image Reconstruction Of Speckle-Degraded Using Bispectrum Estimation, Steven M. Wear Jan 1990

Shift-Invariant Image Reconstruction Of Speckle-Degraded Using Bispectrum Estimation, Steven M. Wear

Theses

Coherent speckle noise is modeled as a multiplicative noise process that has a negative exponential probability density function. Using a homomorphic transfor mation, this speckle noise is converted to a signal-independent, additive process. The speckled images are randomly jittered from frame-to-frame against a uniform background to simulate image motion and/or platform jitter. Multiple images are logarithmically transformed and ensemble averaged in the bispectral domain. The bispectrum ignores this image motion so no blurring results from the ensemble averaging. Object Fourier magnitude and phase information are also retained in the bispectrum so that the resultant image can be uniquely reconstructed. This …

The Effect Of Flexographic Printing On The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Shipping Containers, Michael Reese Eyre, Nancy Kaczor Jan 1990

The Effect Of Flexographic Printing On The Compression Strength Of Corrugated Shipping Containers, Michael Reese Eyre, Nancy Kaczor

Theses

This study examined the effect of flexographic printing, using both natural rubber and photopolymer printing plates, on the top-to-bottom compression strength of RSC style shipping containers. six sets of factors were studied including, 1) Print location on panels (center, one-inch to edge); 2) Number of panels printed (two majors, all four); 3) Print coverage (15%, 30%); 4) Number of colors of print (one-, two-color); 5) Flute size (B, C); and 6) Shape of print (square, rectangle). Individual sets of printing plates were produced to represent each factor studied. The containers were manufactured during an "on-line" production run under standard operating …

Fourier Image Synthesis And Slope Spectrum Analysis Of Deepwater, Wind-Wave Scenes Viewed At Brewster's Angle, Jan Arthur North Dec 1989

Fourier Image Synthesis And Slope Spectrum Analysis Of Deepwater, Wind-Wave Scenes Viewed At Brewster's Angle, Jan Arthur North

Theses

A semi-empirical model for the Fourier synthesis of deepwater, wind-wave scenes has been constructed for the analysis of water-wave slope spectra. The main simplifying assumptions of this model are 1) fully-developed wind-wave surfaces are quasi-homogeneous, quasi -stationary and are therefore treatable by Fourier methods, 2) the subsurface is both optically and mechanically deep, and 3) the small range of spectral wave components defines a fetch-limited, small amplitude condition. A nonlinear transformation of wave slope to reflected and refracted radiance in both horizontal and vertical polarizations was effected under the special conditions of Brewster-angle viewing under clear skies at a spectral …

Bible Binding Techniques: Analysis Of Spine Lining Constructions And Endpaper Reinforcements, Hyung-Sun Kim Nov 1989

Bible Binding Techniques: Analysis Of Spine Lining Constructions And Endpaper Reinforcements, Hyung-Sun Kim

Theses

The Bible has been the largest selling book title in the world. However, very little research of Bible binding techniques has been done. Most Bibles contain more than two thousand pages of Bible paper. Therefore, such books are usually thick and heavy. Thin bible papers provide very little strength for the joint. The strength and durability of a bound product depends on good joint adhesion. The goal of this study was to investigate various joint constructions between the cover and the bookblock of Smyth-sewn Bible bindings. The spine lining and endpaper reinforcement are two most important factors of joint construction. …

Reliability Prediction Of Vulcanized Fibre Using Electrical Noise As A Screening Parameter, George A. Donos Sep 1989

Reliability Prediction Of Vulcanized Fibre Using Electrical Noise As A Screening Parameter, George A. Donos

Theses

The main objective of this thesis was to find a correlation between the electrical noise generated within the body of Vulcanized Fibre in insulating service and the time of its breakdown under a synergy of electrical, thermal and mechanical stresses. Failure was defined as a material discontinuity, puncture, under accelerated life test conditions. Radio frequency measurements of the partial discharges occuring in the voids of the material were performed on 1240 samples of vulcanized fibre with 10 mil thickness. The level of electrical noise measured was used to classify the specimens into the three following categories: (a) Low Noise:0-2.8μV (0-9db), …

Theoretical Analysis Of Universal Joint With Manufacturing And Assembly Tolerances, Xiaosong Liu Sep 1989

Theoretical Analysis Of Universal Joint With Manufacturing And Assembly Tolerances, Xiaosong Liu

Theses

The model for a Cardan joint with manufacturing and assembly tolerances is a spatial four-bar mechanism with one rotating and three cylindrical joints. In this thesis, dual-number coordinate transformation matrices and Newtonian mechanics are applied to provide a concise description of the kinetics of the universal joint. The dual-Euler equations are used to derive the dynamic equations of the Cardan joint. The analytical technique presented here yields explicit expressions. It will provide the designer with better insight into the workings of the kinematics and dynamics of the Cardan joint.

The equations of statics and dynamics of the frictionless universal joint …

Study Of Acetone Extractable Organic Matter From Airborne Particulate Matter From An Urban Site, Wenhui Wu

Theses

Two seasonal periods (Winter 1988; Summer 1988) of daily Newark urban air samples were collected on glass fiber filters. Each filter was first extracted with dichloromethane and subsequently with acetone. Quarterly composites of each were then tested for mutagenicity. The results of the analysis of the less polar dichloromethane extracts were reported in the thesis of Junghen Lwo. A modified fractionation scheme involving acid-base partitioning and silica gel column chromatography has been used as the first step in the bioassay-directed search for significant levels of mutagenic compounds in extracts of inhalable (IP 10) ambient air particulates. The biologically "hot" fractions …
