Improving Automatic Refactoring Candidate Identification, Ryan Devoe
Improving Automatic Refactoring Candidate Identification, Ryan Devoe
Theses
Extract method refactoring is pivotal for enhancing code readability, maintainability, and modularity by segmenting complex code into clearer, isolated methods. Identifying opportunities for such refactorings necessitates a deep understanding of the codebase’s evolution and its intricate relationships. Current methodologies utilize developer commit messages, advanced graph analysis, and diverse machine learning approaches to automate this identification process. This research delves into the application of deep learning-based Large Language Models (LLMs) to tackle the complexities inherent in extract method refactoring. We introduce innovative approaches, including the use of LLMs to cluster code blocks based on complex patterns and dependencies, and the analysis …
Autowaze: Automated, Real-Time, And Accurate Traffic Analytics, Vijay Bajracharya
Autowaze: Automated, Real-Time, And Accurate Traffic Analytics, Vijay Bajracharya
Theses
A key factor leading to the inefficiency of transportation systems is the lack of real-time, fine-grained traffic analytics. An average motorist in the United States spends a significant amount of time looking for parking spots during their daily commute. Existing systems for traffic analytics are either not scal- able to large metropolitan areas or require a human-in-the-loop. This project focuses on automating the detection of fine-grained traffic analytics. Lever- aging on-board stereo cameras, Autowaze utilizes a crowd-sourced strategy to take time-windowed snapshots of the road containing 3D map points of the environment. These snapshots are used to extract changes in …
On The Naming Of Identifiers: A Survey Of Undergraduate Students, Stacy Skalicky
On The Naming Of Identifiers: A Survey Of Undergraduate Students, Stacy Skalicky
Theses
Alsuhaibani et al. state that 60% of the participants do not have strict or any naming standards in the workplace and developers surveyed desired clear method naming standards to promote code comprehension [2]. Martin indi-cated identifier names are responsible for 90% of what makes software readable and understandable [25] . Borstler et al. indicated readability was important to developers at every level of experience but few report their academic influences being effectively leveraged to make quality identifiers [5]. Keuning et al. surveyed teachers in programming-related fields and found that code quality although important, was not a big part of their …
Electron Counting, Dopant Implementation, & Electron Phonon Interaction Mesh Sensitivity Testing For Nanoscale Energy Transport Model, Dominick Velez
Electron Counting, Dopant Implementation, & Electron Phonon Interaction Mesh Sensitivity Testing For Nanoscale Energy Transport Model, Dominick Velez
Theses
Managing thermal energy generation and heat transfer within nanoscale devices (transistors) of modern-day electronics is important as it limits speed, carrier mobility, and affects device reliability. In the nanoscale, heat conduction occurs primarily via phonon transport and heat generation is a result of electron-phonon interactions in these devices. Traditional methods of predicting physical behavior have proven to lack either physical accuracy, computational efficiency, or flexibility. The Nanoscale Energy Transport Model (NETM) is an engineering design tool introduced to calculate non-equilibrium transport of energy carriers in nanoscale devices and overcome the deficiencies of traditional models of energy-carrier transport The NETM previously …

Second-Order Permutation Variable Importance: Quantifying And Attributing Uncertainty In Future Coastal Risk, Dwight Dinkins
Theses
Sensitivity analysis (SA) systematically assesses and quantifies a model’s uncertainty by examining the impact of parameter variations on the model’s output. An objective of sensitivity analysis is to ascertain model-input parameters that contribute the most to the uncertainty of a model’s output and could serve as a gauge to determine whether a parameter’s variation is suitable, expected, or a realistic representation of the phenomenon being modeled. Incorporating sensitivity analysis for assessing the importance of a model feature is imperative for decision-making. Therefore, as a statistical methodology, SA’s application in investigating coastal regions that are vulnerable to sea-level rise and extreme …

A Comparison Of Shaping And Imitation For Reducing A Dog’S Problem Behavior, Carlee Weir, Robbie Hanson
A Comparison Of Shaping And Imitation For Reducing A Dog’S Problem Behavior, Carlee Weir, Robbie Hanson
Theses
Over one million dogs have entered shelters in 2024 alone with approximately 31% of those dogs being relinquished by their owners (Shelter Animal Count, 2024). Further, non-aggressive behavioral issues are often cited as a primary cause for owner relinquishment (Best Friends Network Partners, 2018; Howard & DiGennaro Reed, 2014). Previous research has shown the effectiveness of training methods based on positive reinforcement to reduce problematic behavior with dogs and to increase desirable behavior, such as shaping and clicker training, and there has been a growing interest in the use of imitation during training. Fugazza and Miklosi (2015) compared a shaping …

Undesirable behavior, such as excessive barking, jumping up, and biting, is prevalent among pet dogs with an estimate of 72%-85% of dogs exhibiting at least one type of undesirable behavior (Dinwoodie et al., 2019; Powell et al., 2021; Salonen et al., 2020). Further, canine undesirable behavior has been found to be the leading cause of owners relinquishing their dogs to rescue shelters (Powdrill-Wells et al., 2021). Functional communication training (FCT) is a method that has shown to be effective with human populations for reducing challenging behaviors by teaching an individual an alternative response that results in the same class of …
Goalbert: Goal-Directed Colbert For Iterative Retrieval, Ben Giacalone
Goalbert: Goal-Directed Colbert For Iterative Retrieval, Ben Giacalone
Theses
We dissect and extend ColBERT, a state of the art multi-vector retrieval model. We first perform a number of experiments to identify the role structural tokens (i.e. [CLS], [SEP], [MASK], [Q]) play in retrieval. The most consequential findings are that (1) [MASK] tokens can be remapped to their closest non-[MASK] embedding without a significant degradation in performance, (2) the existence of [MASK], [Q], and [D] does not really affect the contextualization of query text tokens, and (3) [CLS] and [SEP] can act as “summary” embeddings for the model. In another set of experiments, we ex tend the number of [MASK] …

The Use Of A Token Economy To Decrease Problem Behaviors And Increase Task Completion For A Pre-Schooler With Autism, Dyana Schneider, Robbie Hanson
Theses
The execution of a token economy has been shown to be effective to decrease problem behaviors and increase task completion, communication, and other skills for individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (Matson & Boisjoli, 2009). Although previous research has shown token economies to be effective, there remains criticisms regarding existing research, such as low experimental rigor, among others (Maggin et al., 2011). Additionally, although token economies embed evidence-based behavior-analytic strategies (Wong et al., 2015) there appears to be a disconnect between basic and applied research and implementation of token economies in a clinical context (e.g., relying on fixed …
