Comparison Of The Derivative-Transform Edge Gradient Analysis Technique To Tatian's Method Of Edge Gradient Analysis, Varying Random Noise, Truncation Interval And Sampling Internal On Analytical Edges, Robert Laflesh May 1980

Comparison Of The Derivative-Transform Edge Gradient Analysis Technique To Tatian's Method Of Edge Gradient Analysis, Varying Random Noise, Truncation Interval And Sampling Internal On Analytical Edges, Robert Laflesh

Theses

The following work has been computer simulated. A cumulative gaussian step response and the step response of a photographic emulsion 1 were taken through the derivative-transform edge gradient analysis technique and Tatian's method of analysis. Random noise levels, truncation intervals and sampling intervals on the analytic edges were varied to determine their influence on each technique. The variance and means of the calculated m.T.F.s were then statistically tested for no difference of the two techniques. The exact noise free M.T.F. was also calculated and compared to the M.T.F.s calculated by the two techniques. The results show a statistical difference in …

The Limiting Effect Of The Human Visual System On Image Processing, Timothy J. Wilson May 1980

The Limiting Effect Of The Human Visual System On Image Processing, Timothy J. Wilson

Theses

With the application of linear systems analysis, Fourier theory, and signal processing theory to vision science, the properties of the visual system are being defined in terms of such things as the modulation transfer function CMTF) . Earlier experimentation by other researchers has calculated the visual MTF using simple sine-wave targets. This experiment demonstrates the correlation between the visual MTF and the frequency content of simple images. The effect of image contrast is also shown to have an effect on the subjective evaluation of image sharpness. This experiment shows the need to consider the characteristics of the human visual system …

Signage System For Abuja Internation Airport, Abuja Republic Of Nigeria, Hilary G. Marquis Apr 1980

Signage System For Abuja Internation Airport, Abuja Republic Of Nigeria, Hilary G. Marquis

Theses

The purpose of my thesis is to design a signage system for my country's new capital city international airport now under construction at Abuja. Although this project is not a professional contract, I have chosen this topic because of the almost true-to-life experience it has afforded me in working closely with government agencies. It is hoped that this contact will help government managers and planners understand that large construction projects need well thought-out environmental graphics programs. This signage system is designed specifically to orient passen gers from the point of entry on the airport premises to their leaving through the …

Phototherapy--A Phenomenologically Based Approach To Psychological Assessment, Sheila Culkin Apr 1980

Phototherapy--A Phenomenologically Based Approach To Psychological Assessment, Sheila Culkin

Theses

In this project the use of phototherapy in the psychological assessment process was proposed and explored. The conceptual roots for the phototherapy assessment used here can be found in phenomenological psychological literature, in the history and exploration of photography as an expressive art medium, and in the work of social scientists researching the use of photography in human study. The study investigates whether the photography, its content as well as its formal elements, i.e. camera angle, framing, perspective, lights and darks, distance of the subject from photographer, can reflect the experience and perception of the photographer. It has as its …

How A Role Is Created: Kathy In Vanities, Donna Spaulding Apr 1980

How A Role Is Created: Kathy In Vanities, Donna Spaulding

Theses

This thesis explores the process of developing a theatrical character, focusing on the role of Kathy in the play Vanities by Jack Heifner. Authored by Donna Spaulding as part of her Master of Fine Arts degree at The Lindenwood Colleges, the document provides an in-depth case study of how an actor constructs a character from script to stage. Drawing heavily on the Stanislavski System and the guidance of director Yvonne Ghareeb, Spaulding documents each phase of character creation—from initial script analysis through rehearsal and performance.

The thesis is structured around several key stages: analyzing the character, rehearsal, performance, and post-production …

The Creation Of Berenice Sadie Brown In The Member Of The Wedding, Debra Lynne Wicks Apr 1980

The Creation Of Berenice Sadie Brown In The Member Of The Wedding, Debra Lynne Wicks

Theses

This thesis explores the creative and interpretive process of bringing the character Berenice Sadie Brown to life in a stage production of The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers. Written and performed by Debra Lynne Wicks as part of her Master of Fine Arts degree at Lindenwood Colleges, the project documents her journey from casting to final performance. The study begins with a literary and theatrical analysis of McCullers’ novel and its adaptation to the stage, focusing particularly on the challenges posed by the lyrical and introspective nature of the text.

Central to the thesis is Wicks’s effort to …

Effect Of Iodide On Absorption Spectra For Dyes Adsorbed To Silver Halide Substrates, Mark Hinz Apr 1980

Effect Of Iodide On Absorption Spectra For Dyes Adsorbed To Silver Halide Substrates, Mark Hinz

Theses

The effects due to iodide in a silver bromide octahedral crystal on the absorption spectra of adsorbed 3,3'-Diethyl-9- Methylthiacarbocyanine and 5,5'-Dichloro-3,3',9- Triethylthiacarbocyanine were investigated. It was found that iodide encouraged Ja-band aggragation for 5,5'-Dichloro-3,3;9-Triethylthiacarbocyanine but not for 3,3’-Diethyl-9-Methylthiacarbocyanine. The suggestion is made that iodide is acting as nucleation centers for 5,5'-Dichloro-3,3',9-Triethylthiacarbocyanine.

Art Therapy With Mentally Ill Children, Phyllis L. Childers Mar 1980

Art Therapy With Mentally Ill Children, Phyllis L. Childers

Theses

This thesis is concerned with the applicability of art therapy for medically ill or injured children and adolescents, The majority of the bibliographic and experiential research comes from work with hospitalized young people, however a hypothesis could be made for the applicability of art therapy for non-hospitalized pediatric patients, as well , Due to the limited amount of available research, this second category can only be addressed briefly in this thesis.

Hospitalized pediatric patients refers here to children and adolescents who are hospitalized for physical illness, injury, or other medical problems, This thesis does not concern itself with patients who …

A Study On The Improvement Of Rop Newspaper Color Through Modification Of The Reproductive Curve To Lighten The Overall Reproduction, Ronald Assoian Feb 1980

A Study On The Improvement Of Rop Newspaper Color Through Modification Of The Reproductive Curve To Lighten The Overall Reproduction, Ronald Assoian

Theses

Most run on paper offset newspapers have not shown the capability of producing color reproductions without having the prints subject to a darkening or a muddy look. This problem is basically caused by the absorbency of the newsprint. Since the newsprint is so absorbent, the ink can only be printed to a low solid ink density and coarse screens must be used so the dots do not fill-in. To eliminate this problem, it is believed that if the midtones are reduced on the gray scale during the separation process, and then the wanted colors' dot areas are restored to their …

A Colorimetric Investigation Of Color Tolerances, Scott Stamm Jan 1980

A Colorimetric Investigation Of Color Tolerances, Scott Stamm

Theses

The study was conducted to determine the relationships between a standard color and its visually chosen limits. Commonly, limits or tolerances are communicated to printers using an Allen Tolerance Chart. The Allen Chart, used extensively by package printers, provides a standard of the color to be reproduced along with corresponding light and dark limits. A second form of tolerance chart, used by printers of U. S. Department of Transportation hazardous materials warning labels, provides limits for colors three dimensionally. Both types of tolerance charts were used in this study. Three Department of Transportation tolerance charts were measured spectrophotometrically producing a …

Therapeutic Use Of The Mandala, Laura Rienè

Theses

The thesis "Therapeutic Use of the Mandala" explores the application of mandalas in art therapy, hypnosis, and counseling psychology. It examines the mandala’s historical and cross-cultural significance, tracing its use in meditation, healing, and self-integration across Buddhist, Jungian, and indigenous traditions. The study outlines a structured therapeutic process, which includes relaxation, guided visualization, and spontaneous drawing to access subconscious emotions and promote psychological healing.

A central theme of the research is the mandala’s role as a visual tool for emotional release and self-discovery. The thesis argues that creating mandalas allows individuals to externalize unresolved emotions, providing insight into …

The Measurement Of Rms Granularity Of Black And White Photographic Materials Using A Visual Comparison Technique, Jack C. Smith Jan 1980

The Measurement Of Rms Granularity Of Black And White Photographic Materials Using A Visual Comparison Technique, Jack C. Smith

Theses

A method is described for measuring the RMS granularity of black and white photographic materials at a diffuse density of 1.0 using a visual comparison technique. A set of standard granularity patches was prepared for use with a comparison microscope. Samples with known values of RMS granularity were evaluated by observers and it was found that the observer -measured values of granularity correlated well with the actual values of granularity. Some discrepancies from the expected relationship between observer-measured values and actual values are discussed.
