A Limited Comparison Of Ultraviolet Curing And Convection Drying On Paper Permanence, Nancy Bittner May 1983

A Limited Comparison Of Ultraviolet Curing And Convection Drying On Paper Permanence, Nancy Bittner

Theses

Archivists, conservators and librarians are concerned with paper permanence. Tests have shown that paper permanence is affected by light (especially ultra violet), temperature and humidity changes, acidity, in sects and rodents, and by general use. Environmental damages are often insidious. The objective of this study is to find whether ultraviolet curing and evaporative drying as experienced in the printing industry would affect paper permanence. Glen G. Gray's procedure for finding the reaction rate (the rate at which chemical reactions are completed) of paper is followed. This method relies on the fact that a chemical reaction occurs at speeds which depend …

A Science Curriculum Incorporating Process Skill Activities Into Content-Oriented Science Programs, Holly Richards May 1983

A Science Curriculum Incorporating Process Skill Activities Into Content-Oriented Science Programs, Holly Richards

Theses

This curriculum of science activities was developed to be used with a content-oriented text in the intermediate grades of elementary school. It was specifically designed to give students additional practice in using the process skills in the various units of science, The author felt the need for this curriculum after teaching both content- and process-oriented programs, as each left much to be desired when taught in isolation.

This researcher believes that children learn best by doing, and that science is an ideal area in which to develop the skills that produce independent learners and critical thinkers. However, as research shows, …

An Application Of Multi-Dimensional Scaling To The Re-Examination Of Preferred Tone Reproduction, David J. Porter May 1983

An Application Of Multi-Dimensional Scaling To The Re-Examination Of Preferred Tone Reproduction, David J. Porter

Theses

Black and white prints were produced of several scenes that varied in both negative contrast and negative exposure. Subjects rated the various prints by categories based on their own personal understanding of what an excellent print was. The boundaries of the categories were found and used to determine the preferred tone reproduction characteristics. Individual differences were also scaled with the use of a proximity measure determined from the categorical data. The preferred contrast (1.46 +0.24) was significantly higher than the contrast that has been found to be preferred in earlier studies. The application of this study to more general situations …

Dream Images, John Nasif Samaha May 1983

Dream Images, John Nasif Samaha

Theses

Please seek out the real purpose of this report in the photographs. It is with these images that I have tried to communicate what I have thought, felt, and dreamt. My work is experimental in technique. The images are created as fantasies juxtaposed with the tradition of design, figure, line, planes of dimension, and overall composition. By using color materials in a non-conventional way, I am exploring the range of photographic possibilities with color, form, drama, emotion, mystery, and life. Photography functions beautifully for these narrative elements because of its ability to transform a real event into something mysterious, removed …

Development Of Syntax-Directed Editor For Pascal, Chintana Promphan May 1983

Development Of Syntax-Directed Editor For Pascal, Chintana Promphan

Theses

A syntax-directed editor for Pascal is created by using an ALOE (A Language Oriented Editor) implementation tool running under the UNIX* Operating System. An ALOE supports the construction and manipulation of language structures while guaranteeing syntactic correctness. Instantiations of an ALOE for Pascal are generated from a grammatical description of a language. Trees are represented internally by ALOE as an abstract syntax trees that the user manipulates directly, and then maps this internal representation to a concrete representation for display to the user.

Micro-Circuit Reticle Fabrication: An Investigation Of A Silver Halide Emulsion As A Portable Conformable Mask, Patrick St. Cin Apr 1983

Micro-Circuit Reticle Fabrication: An Investigation Of A Silver Halide Emulsion As A Portable Conformable Mask, Patrick St. Cin

Theses

An investigation of the possibility of spin-coating a silver halide emusion similar to that used on Kodak HRP plates onto a positive resist coating reticle blank was made. By changing the cating weight and temperature of the emulsion it was found that the emulsion could be coated onto the reticle without harm to the positive resist material. A five micron width line was imaged successfully and measured in the final chrome sub-layer of the reticle.

Form, Donna Colebeck Apr 1983

Form, Donna Colebeck

Theses

The body of work in this thesis embodies an exploration on form. My interpretation has primarily dealt with form as it relates to hollowware, both functional and non-functional in nature. The hollowware pieces maintain relatively simple shapes with smooth contours, linear dimensions and movement. The linear elements have opened different interpretations so that the work may extend and expand the forms beyond the geometric shapes to allow new contours and directions . Various transitory lines, subtle curves and gradual taperings all work to enhance gentle flow, movement and elegance within each piece.

Determining Spectral Sensitivity Of Kodak Micro Positive Resist 820, Matthew L. Huck Apr 1983

Determining Spectral Sensitivity Of Kodak Micro Positive Resist 820, Matthew L. Huck

Theses

The spectral sensitivity of KODAK Micro Positive Resist 820 has been determined for the spectral range of 300nm to 500nm. A xenon-source monochrometer was used in a hard contact exposing system. Se/isitivity is defined as the inverse of the exposure (mj/cm ) needed to produce an image in a photoresist coated plate having walls of 70 normal slope. Low intensity reciprocity law failure has been conclusively shown to exist in this resist with exposure intensities of 100 mw/cm and below. Guide lines have been drawn up, based on the procedures and results of the experimentation, to assist photoresist users in …

The Effects Of Agitation In Positive Photoresist Image Quality When Using A Bubble Development System, Keith D. Mogerley Apr 1983

The Effects Of Agitation In Positive Photoresist Image Quality When Using A Bubble Development System, Keith D. Mogerley

Theses

An important goal of the microelectronics industry is to make new technological advances while keeping the cost of the fabrication process down. To achieve this goal, the microelectronics industry are presently placing more active devices on each chip, while at the same time trying to increase the number of successful chips per wafer. In order for the industry to successfully do this, they must reduce all of the dimensions in the circuit while trying to maintain its physical, chemical, and functional properties. These demands have made all steps of the fabrication process more critical. The scope of this project will …

Evaluation Of The Photographic Characteristics Of Emulsions With Different Iodide Percentages, Joseph M. Sharp Apr 1983

Evaluation Of The Photographic Characteristics Of Emulsions With Different Iodide Percentages, Joseph M. Sharp

Theses

Ammonia-converted iodobromide emulsions with 0, 1, and 5 mole% iodide were prepared with a single-jet precipitation procedure to the same grain-size distribution. After development to gamma-infinity with high-solvent and low-solvent type developers, photographic characteristics were determined and are reported here. Iodide affects absorption of light in an emulsion, but when corrections are made for this change in absorption, iodide does not change the basic sensitivity of sulfur-sensitized emulsions.

The relationships for the four bands (band 4 through band 7) were determined to be linearly related. The transformation equations will map one images brightness values on to a second images brightness values.

The Effect Of Microscope Scale Reticle Design On Variance Of Measurement, David D. Rockafellow Apr 1983

The Effect Of Microscope Scale Reticle Design On Variance Of Measurement, David D. Rockafellow

Theses

Little work has been documented regarding the design of optical instrument scale reticles. Reticle is the word used to describe both scales and crosshairs used in the eyepiece of an optical instrument. An ergonomic (the relation of man to his working environment) experiment was performed in which thirteen different scale reticles were designed, manufactured and tested. The design parameters tested were scale spacing, line height, and line thickness. The testing consisted of thirty observers measuring a circular test object through a microscope with each scale reticles. The results, taking into consideration both variance in measurement and observer comments, showed the …

Determining Techniques And Alternatives For Pupil Recruitment For Enrollment In The Head Start Program, Nancy Vanzant Apr 1983

Determining Techniques And Alternatives For Pupil Recruitment For Enrollment In The Head Start Program, Nancy Vanzant

Theses

This report examines strategies for improving recruitment and enrollment in Head Start programs serving low-income families in St. Louis. Head Start is a federally funded initiative designed to provide early childhood education, health services, and family support to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite the program’s benefits, many eligible families remain unenrolled, highlighting a persistent gap between available resources and community participation.

The study identifies multiple barriers to enrollment, including limited awareness of Head Start, transportation difficulties, and misconceptions about eligibility. Families often perceive Head Start as a program for others rather than as an opportunity for their own children, while …

Deregulation Of The Telecommunications Industry And The Bell System Divestiture - Impact On The Universal Service Concept, Edward H. Hancock Mar 1983

Deregulation Of The Telecommunications Industry And The Bell System Divestiture - Impact On The Universal Service Concept, Edward H. Hancock

Theses

The Communications Act of 1934 established the principle that our nation' s future telecommunications policy was to be structured on the concept of "Universal Service", i.e. that telephone service is essential, and as such , should be made available and affordable for all . Deregulation of the telecornmunications industry and the soon to be accomplished Bell System divestiture will have a significant adverse impact on the universal service concept. The rationale for this premise is presented as follows . First, a theoretical analysis is made of the changes in the regulated utility revenue requirement which will result from deregulation and …

Moment Method Solution Of The Time-Dependent Transport Equation To Describe The Scattering Of Gaussian Plane Wave Pulses By A Forest, Nack Yang Cho Jan 1983

Moment Method Solution Of The Time-Dependent Transport Equation To Describe The Scattering Of Gaussian Plane Wave Pulses By A Forest, Nack Yang Cho

Theses

The time dependent transport equation is used to study the transmission of periodic pulses through a forest. The forest is assumed to occupy a half-space region, to be statistically homogeneous and to scatter energy isotropically A periodic sequence of Gaussian plane wave pulses is assumed to enter the forest normally from free space. The transport equation is solved by the moment method using triangular expansion functions. Numerical results indicate the dependence of the incoherent intensity on penetration depth, observation angle, albedo and pulse repetition rate.

A Taxonomical Study Of Literary Criticism, Joanne M. Shroba-Wehner Jan 1983

A Taxonomical Study Of Literary Criticism, Joanne M. Shroba-Wehner

Theses

This paper explores the foundational influence of Plato and Aristotle on the development of literary criticism, tracing how their contrasting philosophies have shaped Western literary theory through successive historical periods. Plato’s skepticism toward mimetic art and his emphasis on divine inspiration set the stage for a long tradition of Platonic influence, later adapted by thinkers such as Sir Philip Sidney, Wordsworth, and Shelley. These Neoplatonists reinterpret Plato’s ideas, often granting greater value to poetic imagination and emotional resonance.

In contrast, Aristotle’s systematic approach to poetics—centered on imitation, catharsis, and structured drama—formed the bedrock for classical and neoclassical criticism. His ideas …
