A Market Study On The Viability Of Small Launch Firms, Allen George Dyer Jan 1986

A Market Study On The Viability Of Small Launch Firms, Allen George Dyer

Theses

As the United States only launch vehicle program NASA'~ Space Shuttle forced the shutdown of conventional launch vehicle operations . A system whose profitability depended on frequent use, but which, instead , incurred numerous launch delays, the Shuttle soon could not cover the cost of itself much less turn an profit. The French Ariane, albeit a simpler launch vehicle, soon successfully competed with the Shuttle for payloads.

The Reagan Administration, by various supportive measures, encouraged the market entrance of commercial launch firms . The Shuttle and Ariane, however, subsidized by their respective governments , set prices so artificially low that …

Theses

The thesis, "How a Woman is Perceived by the Clothes She Wears," by Sheila Kaye Reed, explores the correlation between a woman’s clothing and how it influences perceptions of success, authority, and professionalism. The study tests the hypothesis that "well-dressed women are perceived as more successful" through a survey of 201 individuals who evaluated seven outfits worn by models. Participants, both men and women, assessed the perceived characteristics of the models, such as professionalism, dependability, and authority, based on their attire.

The findings reveal that a skirted suit consistently projects an image of success, professionalism, and authority, while outfits like …

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (Gaap) And Small Business, Christine Slaughter Jan 1986

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (Gaap) And Small Business, Christine Slaughter

Theses

Christine Slaughter’s 1986 thesis explores the challenges small and medium-sized businesses face when adhering to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The study emphasizes how certain accounting standards, while designed for broad applicability, often impose unnecessary burdens on smaller enterprises due to their complexity and cost. Slaughter examines the efforts of key organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), to address this issue. Her literature review highlights the concept of “accounting standards overload,” where traditional GAAP requirements may not be cost-effective or relevant for smaller entities. The thesis analyzes debates surrounding …

A Curriculum For The Teaching Of Writing At The Fifth Grade Level Using Cerebral Symmetry, Karen Sue Roth Jan 1986

A Curriculum For The Teaching Of Writing At The Fifth Grade Level Using Cerebral Symmetry, Karen Sue Roth

Theses

Children's writing doesn't just happen. The transferring of private thoughts onto paper is a fragile and complicated press. To make the best use of instructional time and assure the quality of children's writing experiences, this author upon reviewing the current research felt a writing program based on integrating the right and left modes of thinking in a non-threatening environment was necessary. This is a curriculum designed to involve both modes of perceiving. It allows for the right hemisphere modes by encouraging clustering, body movement, color, image making, and metaphoric thinking. It enhances the left hemisphere modes by providing exercises for …

Dib On The Xerox Workstation, Chien-Kuo Chuang Jan 1986

Dib On The Xerox Workstation, Chien-Kuo Chuang

Theses

DIB - A Distributed Implementation of Backtracking is a general-purpose package which allows applications that use tree-traversal algorithms such as backtrack and branch-and-bound to be easily implemented on a multicomputer. The application program needs to specify only the root of the recursion tree, the computation to be performed at each node, and how to generate children at each node. In addition, the application program may optionally specify how to synthesize values of tree nodes from their children's values and how to disseminate information in the tree. DIB uses a distributed algorithm, transparent to the application programmer, that can divide the …

An Extended Relational Data Base Management System For Engineering Design, Charles Fung Jan 1986

An Extended Relational Data Base Management System For Engineering Design, Charles Fung

Theses

At present, the use of the relational model in the engineering design support domain is restricted due to the following: lack of ability to handle complex objects, no support for Abstract Data Types, inappropriate concurrency control for long transactions, no support for versioning and update propagation, poor efficiency, and insufficient design rule checking and consistency contraints enforcement. A simple relational database management system is designed and implemented under the UNIX operating system to incorporate two major extensions: support of user-defined Abstract Data Types and operators, and built-in Design Data Versioning. The design, implementation, and possible extensions to these new facilities …

An Implementation Of The Chor-Rivest Knapsack Type Public Key Cryptosystem, Robert Jr T. Salamone

Theses

The Chor-Rivest cryptosystem is a public key cryptosystem first proposed by MIT cryptographers Ben Zion Chor and Ronald Rivest [Chor84]. More recently Chor has imple mented the cryptosystem as part of his doctoral thesis [Chor85]. Derived from the knapsack problem, this cryptosystem differs from earlier knapsack public key systems in that computa tions to create the knapsack are done over finite algebraic fields. An interesting result of Bose and Chowla supplies a method of constructing higher densities than previously attain able [Bose62]. Not only does an increased information rate arise, but the new system so far is immune to the …

Packaging Requirements For A Sampling Mechanism For Self-Selection Liquid Foundation Makeup, Osnat Lustig Dec 1985

Packaging Requirements For A Sampling Mechanism For Self-Selection Liquid Foundation Makeup, Osnat Lustig

Theses

The cosmetics industry and retailers of cosmetic products face a problem of sampling of packaged merchandise by inconsiderate shoppers in self-service retail outlets. The problem is particularly serious in facial products such as liquid foundation makeup. The consumer desires hands-on feel of the product in order to make an unaided purchase decision of the product, and will continue to sample packaged products as long as there are no other alternatives. However, cost and operation considerations of the cosmetics marketing system often precludes the availability of such alternatives. This study attempts to provide an evaluation tool which will focus on the …
