A Physiological Computing System To Improve Human-Robot Collaboration By Using Human Comfort Index, Celal Savur
A Physiological Computing System To Improve Human-Robot Collaboration By Using Human Comfort Index, Celal Savur
Theses
Fluent human-robot collaboration requires a robot teammate to understand, learn, and adapt to the human's psycho-physiological state. Such collaborations require a physiological computing system that monitors human biological signals during human-robot collaboration (HRC) to quantitatively estimate a human's level of comfort, which we have termed in this research as comfortability index (CI) and uncomfortability index (UnCI). We proposed a human comfort index estimation system (CIES) that uses biological signals and subjective metrics. Subjective metrics (surprise, anxiety, boredom, calmness, and comfortability) and physiological signals were collected during a human-robot collaboration experiment that varied the robot's behavior. The emotion circumplex model is …
Dynamic Algorithms And Asymptotic Theory For Lp-Norm Data Analysis, Mayur Dhanaraj
Dynamic Algorithms And Asymptotic Theory For Lp-Norm Data Analysis, Mayur Dhanaraj
Theses
The focus of this dissertation is the development of outlier-resistant stochastic algorithms for Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the derivation of novel asymptotic theory for Lp-norm Principal Component Analysis (Lp-PCA). Modern machine learning and signal processing applications employ sensors that collect large volumes of data measurements that are stored in the form of data matrices, that are often massive and need to be efficiently processed in order to enable machine learning algorithms to perform effective underlying pattern discovery. One such commonly used matrix analysis technique is PCA. Over the past century, PCA has been extensively used in areas such as …
Credit Card Fraud Detection Using Machine Learning, Meera Alemad
Credit Card Fraud Detection Using Machine Learning, Meera Alemad
Theses
The purpose of this project is to detect the fraudulent transactions made by credit cards by the use of machine learning techniques, to stop fraudsters from the unauthorized usage of customers’ accounts. The increase of credit card fraud is growing rapidly worldwide, which is the reason actions should be taken to stop fraudsters. Putting a limit for those actions would have a positive impact on the customers as their money would be recovered and retrieved back into their accounts and they won’t be charged for items or services that were not purchased by them which is the main goal of …
Nlp And Ml Methods For Pre-Processing, Clustering And Classification Of Technical Logbook Datasets, Farhad Akhbardeh
Nlp And Ml Methods For Pre-Processing, Clustering And Classification Of Technical Logbook Datasets, Farhad Akhbardeh
Theses
Technical logbooks are a challenging and under-explored text type in automated event identification. These texts are typically short and written in non-standard yet technical language, posing challenges to off-the-shelf NLP pipelines. These datasets typically represent a domain (a technical field such as automotive) and an application (e.g., maintenance). The granularity of issue types described in these datasets additionally leads to class imbalance, making it challenging for models to accurately predict which issue each logbook entry describes. In this research, we focus on the problem of technical issue pre-processing, clustering, and classification by considering logbook datasets from the automotive, aviation, and …

Leveraging Formulae And Text For Improved Math Retrieval, Behrooz Mansouri
Theses
Large collections containing millions of math formulas are available online. Retrieving math expressions from these collections is challenging. Users can use formula, formula+text, or math questions to express their math information needs. The structural complexity of formulas requires specialized processing. Despite the existence of math search systems and online community question-answering websites for math, little is known about mathematical information needs. This research first explores the characteristics of math searches using a general search engine. The findings show how math searches are different from general searches. Then, test collections for math-aware search are introduced. The ARQMath test collections have two …

R-Cad: Rare Cyber Alert Signature Relationship Extraction Through Temporal Based Learning, Gordon Werner
R-Cad: Rare Cyber Alert Signature Relationship Extraction Through Temporal Based Learning, Gordon Werner
Theses
The large number of streaming intrusion alerts make it challenging for security analysts to quickly identify attack patterns. This is especially difficult since critical alerts often occur too rarely for traditional pattern mining algorithms to be effective. Recognizing the attack speed as an inherent indicator of differing cyber attacks, this work aggregates alerts into attack episodes that have distinct attack speeds, and finds attack actions regularly co-occurring within the same episode. This enables a novel use of the constrained SPADE temporal pattern mining algorithm to extract consistent co-occurrences of alert signatures that are indicative of attack actions that follow each …

Aerodynamics And Aeroacoustics Optimization Of Vehicle’S Side Mirror Base And Exhaust Pipe, Moath Nayef Mohamed Zaareer
Theses
This thesis is concerned with studying two different vehicle parts in terms of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. Two main factors determine the efficiency and luxury of the vehicle, the low aerodynamic forces and low noise emission. The aerodynamic drag coefficient is concerned with how easy a vehicle can travel through the air; the lower the value, the less fuel is needed to move the vehicle forward and less air resistance the vehicle faces. The aerodynamic lift coefficient is related to vehicle ground stability, and the more negative the value is, the higher the vehicle's stability. Moreover, the aeroacoustics is concerned with …

Investigation Of Thickness And Robustness Of Ultrathin Parylene Membranes For Tissue Barrier And Co-Culture Models, Shayan Gholizadeh
Theses
Ultrathin porous membranes are currently used for various biomedical applications, ranging from co-culture systems to tissue barrier models. In the blood-brain barrier model, the intimate proximity between endothelial and glial cells plays a significant role in cell-cell communication and transmigration across the barrier, which cannot be physiologically modeled with conventional co-culture systems typically separating cell types by more than 10 μm. A thickness gradient membrane can enable studies where the goal is to understand the physical characteristics of co-culture arrangement in the barrier model. Here, a robust method to generate ultrathin porous Parylene C (UPP) membranes is developed not just …

Theses
The current state of quantum computers is characterized by its limited resources and high noise levels. These are known as Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum Computing (NISQ). Reduction of noise is addressed at the technology level, while noise mitigation strategies have been proposed through the compilation process of quantum circuits. The compilation process entails a number of steps that are computationally intensive and scale poorly as the problems grow in size and resource usage. This paper addresses the problems associated with noise by proposing a noise aware qubit routing algorithm. This algorithm attempts to improve accuracy of circuits by using SWAP …
Un-Fair Trojan: Targeted Backdoor Attacks Against Model Fairness, Nicholas Furth
Un-Fair Trojan: Targeted Backdoor Attacks Against Model Fairness, Nicholas Furth
Theses
Machine learning models have been shown to be vulnerable against various backdoor and data poisoning attacks that adversely affect model behavior. Additionally, these attacks have been shown to make unfair predictions with respect to certain protected features. In federated learning, multiple local models contribute to a single global model communicating only using local gradients, the issue of attacks become more prevalent and complex. Previously published works revolve around solving these issues both individually and jointly. However, there has been little study on the effects of attacks against model fairness. Demonstrated in this work, a flexible attack, which we call Un-Fair …
Regulation Of Activity Patterns In Astyanax Mexicanus Cavefish, Udodirim Nwosu
Regulation Of Activity Patterns In Astyanax Mexicanus Cavefish, Udodirim Nwosu
Theses
Organisms commonly modulate their behavioral activity in relation to the 24-hour solar cycle. This modulation of behavior is driven by a combination of responses to external cues in the environment, such as light/dark visual signals, and internal pattern generators that can persist in the absence of external cues. However, there are animals that live in caves or in the deep sea that are isolated from solar circadian cues. How these animals regulate their behavioral activity in relation to external and internal rhythms is an open question in neuroscience that may help us to understand the mechanisms that other animals, including …

While global efforts to close gender gaps have taken great strides in the past years, broad cultural views and social institutions still exist to place women at a subordinate level to men. It is a common scenario to trivialize a woman’s achievements or power in instances when she does not conform to gender norms taken as “a given” in a cultural context. A few elementary examples of such social inequality could include unequal pay at the workplace or menstruation in cultures where it is considered a defilement of a woman’s body instead of a female bodily process. In most of …

The Origin Of Knowledge And Interest In Interpreting: Mapping Out White And Bipoc Interpreters Experiences In Rochester, Ny, Jonathan Roman
Theses
High schools across the United States, located in a range of communities, offer American Sign Language (ASL) courses as a foreign language option. Some are in 'disadvantaged communities'; a school area where there is a lack of economic resources present for students to benefit from (McKillip, M. E. E., Godfrey, K. E, & Rawls, A, 2012). As terminology would suggest, the inverse of that are schools in advantaged communities. Also in the past, there have been BIPOC recruitment efforts for associates and bachelor level signed language interpreter training programs (ITP) by organizations like the National Interpreter Education Center (NIEC). But …
The Health Impacts Of Nursing Shift Work, Amanda M. Shandor
The Health Impacts Of Nursing Shift Work, Amanda M. Shandor
Theses
This descriptive pilot study was intended to evaluate negative outcomes of shift work stress in nursing. Objective analysis of waist-hip-circumference ratios (WHR) and subjective survey reports were utilized to assess whether differences existed in expressed stress, stress related health disorders, and stress associated behaviors among day shift, night shift, and rotating shift registered nurses (RNs). Statistical analysis of the WHRs indicates that no statistical difference exists in the results from this study across the three nursing shifts.
