A Comparative Discussion Of The Notion Of 'Validity' In Qualitative And Quantitative Research, Glyn Winter Mar 2000

A Comparative Discussion Of The Notion Of 'Validity' In Qualitative And Quantitative Research, Glyn Winter

The Qualitative Report

The issues surrounding the use and nature of the term 'validity' in qualitative research are controversial and many. In this paper, the author attempts to establish that 'validity' is not a single, fixed or universal concept, but rather a contingent construct, inescapably grounded in the processes and intentions of particular research methodologies and projects. The first section of this work deals with the problems faced in defining 'validity' in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and will briefly review other authors' attempts to categorise it. The work will then proceed to distinguish and compare the claims to 'validity' made by …

Patterns Of Talk: A Micro-Landscape Perspective, Jerry Gale Jan 2000

Patterns Of Talk: A Micro-Landscape Perspective, Jerry Gale

The Qualitative Report

This paper provides a introduction to conversation analysis. CA is traced from its roots to ethnomethodology, and five features of talk are examined (turn taking procedures, adjacency pairs, presequences, formulations, and accounts). Clinical examples are provided. The relevance of CA to clinicians, researchers and supervisors is also discussed.

Multi-Visual Qualitative Method: Observing Social Groups In Mass Media, George Tsourvakas Sep 1997

Multi-Visual Qualitative Method: Observing Social Groups In Mass Media, George Tsourvakas

The Qualitative Report

In reviewing the bibliography upon which qualitative method is based, the author refers to ethnography, ethnomethdology, symbolic interactionism and cultural studies, and argues that a combination of the qualitative methods is actually possible. To enforce his point, he gives the example of research that was recently conducted about the National Television Channel of Greece. Moreover, through the theoretical review, he asserts that the application of all qualitative methods is a way to transfer ourselves from observation to focusing and depth interviews. He believes that such an application can be really effective while collecting data as well as while analyzing and …

Choice Points:Creating Clinical Qualitative Research Studies, Paul V. Maione Jul 1997

Choice Points:Creating Clinical Qualitative Research Studies, Paul V. Maione

The Qualitative Report

Today, more psychotherapists are seeing the utility of studying their own and others' therapeutic work. With the growing popularity and acceptance of qualitative methods, the research process takes on special significance for the clinician/researcher. Using qualitative methodologies, therapists can conduct studies that are immediately relevant to their therapeutic work. In this paper, I discuss eight decisions or "choice points" clinician/researchers face when conducting clinical qualitative research studies. The choices I discuss are not all inclusive, yet they are representative of the choices most clinical qualitative projects required.

Chaos In The Clinic:Applications Of Choas Theory To A Qualitative Study Of A Veterinary Practice, Eleanor Craven Brennan Jul 1997

Chaos In The Clinic:Applications Of Choas Theory To A Qualitative Study Of A Veterinary Practice, Eleanor Craven Brennan

The Qualitative Report

This paper is the result of a twelve hour participant observation study of a local, private veterinary practice in southeastern Pennsylvania. Field notes and semi-structured interviews, the result of naturally occurring conversation between me and practice members, were taken over a twelve week period, one hour of site visit each week. Using a grounded theory methodology, categories of social interaction among veterinarians, veterinary technicians, clerical staff, owners and animal clients were assembled, discarded and re-assembled. The resulting categories were analyzed using the conceptual framework of chaos theory and the principles of uncertainty. It appears that the most striking feature of …

Semiotics And Qualitative Research In Education: The Third Crossroad, Gary Shank Dec 1995

Semiotics And Qualitative Research In Education: The Third Crossroad, Gary Shank

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, I would like to show how qualitative research in education and semiotics can be brought together for the benefit of each field. Starting with attempts to define both qualitative research and semiotics in ways that can inform both disciplines, I hope to accomplish this task by mapping a series of three crossroads that define the past, present, and hopefully the future of the field.

When Research Interviews Are More Therapeutic Than Therapy Interviews, Jerry Gale Sep 1992

When Research Interviews Are More Therapeutic Than Therapy Interviews, Jerry Gale

The Qualitative Report

This brief report presents some preliminary results of part of a study currently being conducted (Gale, 1992, May). The study is a qualitative analysis of a couple's and therapist's perspective of meaningful moments in therapy using Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) (Elliott, 1986). The methodology of this study involved the collaborators (aka: subjects) in a manner that was self-reflexive and recursive (see Steier, in press). The impact of the study was such that the research interviews themselves were reported to have greater therapeutic impact than the therapy. Following eight sessions of marital therapy, the couple reported that therapy was not helpful, …

A Case For Clinical Qualitative Research*, Ronald J. Chenail Sep 1992

A Case For Clinical Qualitative Research*, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

For the most part, that which is called qualitative research has been developed, understood, and justified within scientific and quantitative contexts. Sharing common interests (e.g., description, interpretation, criticism, subjectivity, etc.) with this scientific qualitative research are two contrasting traditions of research and practice, which have originated and evolved in domains of inquiry other than science and technology, namely those methods and ways of knowing from the arts and humanities, and from the clinical fields. This latter type, clinical qualitative or practitioner-generated research, is defined and contrasted with the scientific and artistic varieties. A number of clinical qualitative research projects are …
