Ceu Session #4 - Space Robotics For On-Orbit Servicing And Space Debris Removal, Markus Wilde
Space Congress® Proceedings
The next ten years will see an unprecedented increase in the number of spacecraft deployed in Earth orbit and the number of commercial ventures operating space assets. The large increase in the number of spacecraft and the large increase in the commercial value of space will lead to renewed interest in robotic on-orbit servicing (OOS) and active debris removal (ADR). The lecture will provide a brief overview over the history of crewed and robotic OOS and discuss the missions planned for the near future. It will then proceed to identify the critical enabling technologies for a future, operational OOS and …

Ceu Session #1 - Advanced Propulsion And Radiation Protection For Sustainable Space Exploration, David Chesney
Space Congress® Proceedings
Infrastructures for sustainable human space exploration beyond low-Earth orbit will require advanced propulsion and radiation protection. Rapid transit between destinations is needed to mitigate effects from microgravity, while shielding from high-energy, isotropic galactic cosmic rays is needed to mitigate long-term radiation exposure. Here, we discuss the continued development of two novel technologies with the potential to accomplish both tasks. First, we present the capabilities of a rocket concept that mimics the production of a solar flare to achieve high-efficiency plasma propulsion. Second, we introduce a scalable superconducting shielding design that exploits the superposition of magnetic fields to generate a large …
