The Delivery Of Mixed Communities In The Regeneration Of Urban Waterfronts: An Investigation Of The Comparative Experience Of Plymouth And Bristol, Daniel Thorning, Christopher Balch, Stephen Essex
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The raison d’être of spatial planning is to secure public benefits or goods through the regulation of private development. Under neoliberalism, where economic growth is privileged over community interests, the ability of planning to deliver public goods can be compromised. The aim of this research was to investigate the delivery of mixed communities in the regeneration of waterfront sites in two outwardly comparable, but in detail, rather different port cities, namely Plymouth and Bristol. The range of dwelling types, extent of affordable housing and associated practicalities of delivery were evaluated using planning application data, 2000–2017 and semi-structured interviews with key …

Devon Tourism: The Story Of The County’S Economic Leviathan, Stephen Essex, Mark Brayshay
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Over the past 149 volumes of these Transactions, fewer than half a dozen papers have focused directly on tourism in Devon. Given its key role in shaping the county’s history, landscape and infrastructure, and its contemporary social and economic character, such a dearth of studies is striking and contrasts with the burgeoning body of scholarly work on Devon tourism aired elsewhere. The aim of this paper is to offer a broad, benchmark review of the origins, historical growth and changing character, as well as the contemporary state and future prospects, of tourism in the county. The analysis demonstrates how the …

Total Factor Energy Productivity And Efficiency Changes Of The Gher (Prawn-Carp-Rice) Farming System In Bangladesh: A Stochastic Input Distance Function Approach, S Rahman, Bk Barmon
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This paper measures energy performance, Total Factor Energy Productivity (TFEP), technical change (TC) and energy efficiency change (EEC) of the gher (prawn-carp-rice) farming system using a unique panel data of 90 farmers covering a 14 year period (2002–2015) from southwest Bangladesh by employing a stochastic input distance function approach. Results reveal that all inputs contribute significantly to energy productivity of the gher farming system with male labor energy input being the major contributor followed by energy from machineries, seeds and chemicals. Energy performance of the High Yielding Variety (HYV) rice enterprise is highly efficient whereas the prawn enterprise is highly …

Myrmekite And Strain Weakening In Granitoid Mylonites, A Ceccato, L Menegon, G Pennacchioni, Lfg Morales
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
At mid-crustal conditions, deformation of feldspar is mainly accommodated by a combination of fracturing, dissolution–precipitation, and reaction-weakening mechanisms. In particular, K-feldspar is reaction-weakened by the formation of strain-induced myrmekite – a fine-grained symplectite of plagioclase and quartz. Here we use electron backscattered diffraction to (i) investigate the microstructure of a granodiorite mylonite, developed at ~ 450 °C during cooling of the Rieserferner pluton (Eastern Alps); and (ii) assess the microstructural processes and the weakening associated with myrmekite development. Our analysis shows that the crystallographic orientation of plagioclase in pristine myrmekite was controlled by that of the replaced K-feldspar. Myrmekite nucleation …

On Site Determination Of Trace Metals In Estuarine Sediments By Field-Portable-Xrf., Andrew Turner, Alex Taylor
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
A portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer and mobile test stand have been employed to examine the feasibility of on site measurements of trace metals in estuarine sediment. In the laboratory, the instrument was able to detect the trace metals: As, Cr, Cu, Pb, Sn and Zn; and the geochemical proxy metals: Ca, Fe, K and Rb; in both fresh and freeze-dried surficial samples from the Tamar and Tavy estuaries, southwest England, that had been emplaced in polyethylene bags over the detector window. The presence of interstitial water in fresh samples acted as both a diluent of sediment mass and an …
Replacement Reactions And Deformation By Dissolution And Precipitation Processes In Amphibolites, F Giuntoli, L Menegon, Cj Warren
Replacement Reactions And Deformation By Dissolution And Precipitation Processes In Amphibolites, F Giuntoli, L Menegon, Cj Warren
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The deformation of the middle to lower crust in collisional settings occurs via deformation mechanisms that vary with rock composition, fluid content, pressure, and temperature. These mechanisms are responsible for the accommodation of large tectonic transport distances during nappe stacking and exhumation. Here, we show that fracturing and fluid flow triggered coupled dissolution–precipitation and dissolution–precipitation creep processes, which were responsible for the formation of a mylonitic microstructure in amphibolites. This fabric is developed over a crustal thickness >500 m in the Lower Seve Nappe (Scandinavian Caledonides). Amphibolites display a mylonitic foliation that wraps around albite porphyroclasts appearing dark in panchromatic …

Changes In Total Factor Productivity And Efficiency Of Microfinance Institutions In The Developing World: A Non-Parametric Approach, Ak Kar, S Rahman
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
© 2018 Economic Society of Australia, Queensland Applying the Färe–Primont index, this paper computes the total factor productivity (TFP) index for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in terms of its six individual components: technical change, technical, scale and mix efficiency changes and residual scale and residual mix efficiency changes. We use panel data of 342 MFIs from 61 countries covering the period 2003–2013. Results show that MFIs are operating at a low level of productivity with an overall annual rate of decline in TFP of 1.7 percent. Although technical progress, technical efficiency change and mix efficiency change components of TFP have increased …

Determination And Prediction Of Zinc Speciation In Estuaries, Holly B.C. Pearson, Sean D.W. Comber, Charlotte B. Braungardt, Paul Worsfold, Anthony Stockdale, Stephen Lofts
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Lowering of the estuarine Environmental Quality Standard for zinc in the UK to 121 nM reflects rising concern regarding zinc in ecosystems and is driving the need to better understand its fate and behavior and to develop and parametrize speciation models to predict the metal species present. For the first time, an extensive data set has been gathered for the speciation of zinc within an estuarine system with supporting physicochemical characterization, in particular dissolved organic carbon. WHAM/Model VII and Visual MINTEQ speciation models were used to simulate zinc speciation, using a combination of measured complexation variables and available defaults. Data …

Most of the planet's diversity is concentrated in the tropics, which includes many regions undergoing rapid climate change. Yet, while climate-induced biodiversity changes are widely documented elsewhere, few studies have addressed this issue for lowland tropical ecosystems. Here we investigate whether the floristic and functional composition of intact lowland Amazonian forests have been changing by evaluating records from 106 long-term inventory plots spanning 30 years. We analyse three traits that have been hypothesized to respond to different environmental drivers (increase in moisture stress and atmospheric CO2 concentrations): maximum tree size, biogeographic water-deficit affiliation and wood density. Tree communities have become …

© 2018, The Author(s). The study investigates the in-situ strength of sediments across a plate boundary décollement using drilling parameters recorded when a 1180-m-deep borehole was established during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 370, Temperature-Limit of the Deep Biosphere off Muroto (T-Limit). Information of the in-situ strength of the shallow portion in/around a plate boundary fault zone is critical for understanding the development of accretionary prisms and of the décollement itself. Studies using seismic reflection surveys and scientific ocean drillings have recently revealed the existence of high pore pressure zones around frontal accretionary prisms, which may reduce the effective …

The LandCover6k working group investigates whether prehistoric and historic human impacts on land cover (i.e. anthropogenic land-cover change due to land use - LULC) were sufficiently large to have a significant impact on regional climates. This workshop focused on reconstructing land use for the European continent by synthesizing farming and landscape management patterns derived from the archaeological record, for a 6000 BP time slice. We were also interested in the location of settlements, field systems, and industrial activities. The main objectives of the workshop were to: (i) Review LU classifications developed for other regions (Morrison et al. 2018), ensure these …

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd The development of various combinative methods for Arctic sea ice reconstruction using the sympagic highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) IP25in conjunction with pelagic biomarkers has often facilitated more detailed descriptions of sea ice conditions than using IP25alone. Here, we investigated the application of the Phytoplankton-IP25index (PIP25) and a recently proposed Classification Tree (CT) model for describing temporal shifts in sea ice conditions to assess the consistency of both methods. Based on biomarker data from three downcore records from the Barents Sea spanning millennial timescales, we showcase apparent and potential limitations in both approaches, and provide recommendations for …

Investigating The History Of Volatiles In The Solar System Using Synchrotron Infrared Micro-Spectroscopy, Aj King, Pf Schofield, Nr Stephen, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The aqueously altered CM carbonaceous chondrite meteorites can be used to investigate the nature and transport of volatiles in the early solar system. We present the preliminary results of an effort to collect 2D infrared (IR) spectral maps from the matrix and fine-grained rims (FGRs) of material that surround chondrules and inclusions in the Murchison CM2 meteorite using synchrotron IR micro-spectroscopy. The main features in mid-IR spectra of the matrix and FGRs occur at ∼3500 cm−1 and ∼1000 cm−1 and are attributed to –OH/H2O and Si–O bonds in phyllosilicates and anhydrous silicates. Minor features in the spectra are attributed to …

This study analyses the use of contextual and universal variables to assess the resilience of human systems. The article examines the terms ‘contextual’ and ‘universal’ in relation to resilience variables, how widely accepted different variables are as indicators of resilience, and the extent to which variables can be classified using these conceptual terms. The article analyses how the ‘direction’ of a variable indicating either resilience or vulnerability can be assessed and argues that often the same variable can be interpreted differently for the resilience of a human system, depending on the context of the system under investigation and the positionality …

Measuring Quality Of Economic Growth Incorporating Environment And Social Welfare:A Total Productivity Approach With An Application On China, Y Sun, S Rahman, C Dai
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
By extending the traditional productivity theory, a new concept total productivity(TP) is introduced. Using a directional distance function approach, the concept is applied to measuring economic growth of 8 economic regions of China covering an 18 years period(1997-2014) and test its convergence. Results showed that TP grew at an average rate of 6.6% per year led mainly by technical change(6.5%). When environmental undesirable outputs are included, the Middle Yellow River, Northwest and Southwest regions of China witnessed higher productivity changes. Results of the convergence analysis revealed that China had made progress in reducing regional imbalance in growth. Inclusion of undesirable …
