Reconstructing The Christian Malford Ecosystem In The Oxford Clay Formation (Callovian, Jurassic) Of Wiltshire: Exceptional Preservation, Taphonomy, Burial And Compaction, Malcolm B. Hart, Kevin N. Page, Gregory D. Price, Christopher W. Smart

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Abstract. The Christian Malford lagerstätte in the Oxford Clay Formation of Wiltshire contains exceptionally well-preserved squid-like cephalopods, including Belemnotheutis antiquus (Pearce). Some of these fossils preserve muscle tissue, contents of ink sacks and other soft parts of the squid, including arms with hooks in situ and the head area with statoliths (ear bones) present in life position. The preservation of soft-tissue material is usually taken as an indication of anoxic or dysaerobic conditions on the sea floor and within the enclosing sediments. Interestingly, in the prepared residues of all these sediments there are both statoliths and arm hooks as well …

Uncertainty Associated With The Leaching Of Aerosol Filters For The Determination Of Metals In Aerosol Particulate Matter Using Collision/Reaction Cell Icp-Ms Detection, Robert Clough, Maeve C. Lohan, Simon J. Ussher, Malcolm Nimmo, Paul J. Worsfold

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. High quality observational data with a firm uncertainty assessment are essential for the proper validation of biogeochemical models for trace metals such as iron. Typically, concentrations of these metals are very low in oceanic waters (nM and sub nM) and ICP-MS is therefore a favoured technique for quantitative analysis. Uncertainties in the measurement step are generally well constrained, even at sub-nM concentrations. However, the measurement step is only part of the overall procedure. For the determination of trace metal solubilities from aerosols in the surface ocean, aerosol collection on a filter paper followed by a leaching …

Reconciling Storegga Tsunami Sedimentation Patterns With Modelled Wave Heights: A Discussion From The Shetland Isles Field Laboratory, Ag Dawson, S Dawson, Stein Bondevik, Pedro J.M. Costa, Jon Hill, Iain Stewart

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Shetland Isles represent an ideal field laboratory for tsunami geoscience research. This is due to the widespread preservation of Holocene tsunami sediments in coastal peat deposits. This study uses published accounts of the Holocene Storegga Slide tsunami to illustrate how two different approaches – mapping of tsunami sediments and numerical modelling – produce radically different run-up heights. The Storegga Slide is one of the world largest submarine slides and took place ca 8150 cal yr bp on the continental slope west of Norway. The tsunami generated by the landslide deposited locally extensive sheets of marine sand and gravel, as …

Integrating Climate Change Adaptation In The Planning And Regeneration Of Coastal Urban Areas: Priorities Barriers, And Future Prospects, Daniel Young, Stephen Essex Jun 2019

Integrating Climate Change Adaptation In The Planning And Regeneration Of Coastal Urban Areas: Priorities Barriers, And Future Prospects, Daniel Young, Stephen Essex

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing society and the spatial planning system plays a crucial role in ensuring that important adaptations to the built environment are evaluated. Drawing upon a mixed-methods research approach, this paper explores the progress that has been made by the planning system in England in addressing the challenge of climate change adaptation in coastal urban areas. The results indicate that the adaptation produced through the planning system remains incremental rather than transformative. It is focused on experienced hazards, especially flooding, and there is a lack of attention being paid to wider impacts of …

Fluid-Mediated, Brittle–Ductile Deformation At Seismogenic Depth – Part 1: Fluid Record And Deformation History Of Fault Veins In A Nuclear Waste Repository (Olkiluoto Island, Finland), B Marchesini, Ps Garofalo, L Menegon, J Mattila, G Viola

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The dynamic evolution of fault zones at the seismogenic brittle–ductile transition zone (BDTZ) expresses the delicate interplay between numerous physical and chemical processes. Deformation and fluid flow at the BDTZ are closely related and mutually dependent during repeating and transient cycles of frictional and viscous deformation. Despite numerous studies documenting in detail seismogenic faults exhumed from the BDTZ, uncertainties remain as to the exact role of fluids in facilitating broadly coeval brittle and ductile deformation at that structural level. We combine structural analysis, fluid inclusion, and mineral chemistry data from synkinematic and authigenic minerals to reconstruct the temporal variations in …

Blake, Patrick Ndakidemi

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Increased soil erosion is one of the main drivers of land degradation in East Africa’s agricultural and pastoral landscapes. This wicked problem is rooted in historic disruptions to co-adapted agro-pastoral systems. Introduction of agricultural growth policies by centralised governance resulted in temporal and spatial scale mismatches with the complex and dynamic East African environment, which subsequently contributed to soil exhaustion, declining fertility and increased soil erosion. Coercive policies of land use, privatisation, sedentarisation, exclusion and marginalisation led to a gradual erosion of the indigenous social and economic structures. Combined with the inability of the new nation-states to provide many of …

Role Of Recent Climate Change On Carbon Sequestration In Peatland Systems., Paul H. Lunt, Ralph M. Fyfe, Alan D. Tappin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper provides information on the impact of recent climate change on carbon sequestration in peatland systems in South West England. This is important because peatlands have the potential to sequester and hold large quantities of anthropogenically released CO2. This paper investigates whether there has been a reduction in the strength of carbon sinks in a valley mire and blanket bog, which occur on the limits of the biogeographical envelop for peatlands in Britain. Past rates of carbon accumulation were calculated from peat depth and the sequential analysis of peat age, bulk density and carbon content from cores taken from …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

X-ray computed tomography (XCT) can be used to identify lithologies and deformation structures within geological core, with the potential for the identification processes to be applied automatically. However, because of drilling disturbance and other artifacts, the use of large XCT-datasets in automated processes requires methods of quality control that can be applied systematically. We propose a new systematic method for quality control of XCT data that applies numerical measures to CT slices, and from this obtains data reflective of core quality. Because the measures are numerical they can be applied quickly and consistently between different sections and cores. This quality …

Identification, Origin And Characteristics Of Bio-Bead Microplastics From Beaches In Western Europe., Andrew Turner, Claire Wallerstein, Rob Arnold

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Primary microplastics have been collected from 17 beaches along the Atlantic, English Channel and southern North Sea coasts of western Europe. Based on visual characteristics, these plastics were differentiated as either relatively smooth, lentil- or disc-shaped pre-production pellets (or nurdles), which were usually a few mm in diameter and were mainly white to off-white, or rougher and more irregular pellets that were slightly larger and usually black. The latter appeared to be bio-beads, or plastics that are specifically manufactured for use as biomedia in certain sewage water treatment (SWT) plants and, possibly, in other industrial wastewater treatment applications. Identification of …

The rise of palm oil as the world's most consumed vegetable oil has coincided with exponential growth in palm oil research activity. Bibliometric analysis of research outputs reveals a distinct imbalance in the type of research being undertaken, notably a disproportionate focus on biofuel and engineering topics. Recognizing the expansion of oil palm agriculture across the tropics and the increasing awareness of environmental, social, and economic impacts, we seek to reorientate the existing research agenda toward one that addresses the most fundamental and urgent questions defined by the palm oil stakeholder community. Following consultation with 659 stakeholders from 38 countries, …
