Extracting Palaeoflood Data From Coarse-Grained Pleistocene River Terrace Archives: An Example From Se Spain, Anne Mather, Martin Stokes
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Field based palaeoflood event reconstruction has the potential to contribute to the development of our understanding of longterm landscape evolution. However the reconstruction of past flow event histories (magnitude and frequency) over long-term (Quaternary) timescales is fraught with difficulties. Here we make a preliminary exploration of some of the practicalities of flood reconstruction from fluvial terrace archives using commonly available sedimentological and geomorphological observations from a field perspective. We utilize Manning and palaeostage indicators to reconstruct historic events that can be used as benchmarks for a lesser used competence based approach (Clarke 1996), which is applied to coarse-grained strath terrace …

The presence of a di-unsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) lipid biomarker (diene II) in Southern Ocean sediments has previously been proposed as a proxy measure of palaeo Antarctic sea ice. Here we show that a source of diene II is the sympagic diatom Berkeleya adeliensis Medlin. Furthermore, the propensity for B. adeliensis to flourish in platelet ice is reflected by an offshore downward gradient in diene II concentration in >100 surface sediments from Antarctic coastal and near-coastal environments. Since platelet ice formation is strongly associated with super-cooled freshwater inflow, we further hypothesize that sedimentary diene II provides a potentially sensitive …

Harbours are a focus of intensive and diverse activities and thus have a high potential to become centres of conflict between users. Reviewing the multiple uses associated with harbours provides important insights into maritime communities and the management of conflict. In this paper, seven international, multi-disciplinary groups provide their expert synthesis of individual harbours. After a detailed discussion experts from Sydney, Qingdao, Vigo, Auckland, Jakarta, Crete and Plymouth synthesised and shared their harbour’s characteristics, user conflicts and how such conflicts have been researched and managed. The paper addresses an omission of “conflict” in most of the research literature about harbours, …

Spatially Resolved Mid-Ir Spectra From Meteorites; Linking Composition, Crystallographic Orientation And Spectra On The Micro-Scale, Nr Stephen
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Spectral data from spacecraft are often used to infer the surface mineralogy of a body by unmixing the bulk spectrum into constituent components and comparing these to spectral databases [e.g. 1, 2]. It is widely accepted that mineral spectra derived from meteorites can provide a more accurate match to their parent body than terrestrial databases alone [3, 4]. Recent work has sought to resolve mid-IR spectra in Martian pyroxenes in terms of crystallographic orientation [3] and zonation [5], and more generally for Martian meteorites using the increased spatial resolution of synchrotron-source µFT-IR [6]. Linking these studies together, one can extract …

Geometry Of Holocene Tidal Notches – Sea Level Markers At Perachora Peninsula, Gulf Of Corinth, Greece, S Schneiderwind, M Kázmér, S Boulton, I Papanikolaou, K Reicherter
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Tidal notches are a generally accepted sea level indicator that, when different from mean sea level, witness tectonic activity at or near coastlines. However, how to infer related information is controversial since tectonic uplift from a single seismic event is not likely to exceed several decimetres. High resolution laser scanning offers the availability of close-up views on exposures and to detect evidence for multiple sea level indicators in between major emergence. Statistically representative profiles along exposure were analysed in order to prove for already described tidal notches and to highlight similar shapes in consistent geometries along coastal cliffs of Perachora …

Using Video Games For Volcanic Hazard Education And Communication: An Assessment Of The Method And Preliminary Results, Lara Mani, Paul D. Cole, Iain Stewart
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Abstract. This paper presents the findings from a study aimed at understanding whether video games (or serious games) can be effective in enhancing volcanic hazard education and communication. Using the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent, we have developed a video game – St. Vincent's Volcano – for use in existing volcano education and outreach sessions. Its twin aims are to improve residents' knowledge of potential future eruptive hazards (ash fall, pyroclastic flows and lahars) and to integrate traditional methods of education in a more interactive manner. Here, we discuss the process of game development including concept design through to …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Three models are evaluated for restoring basement rocks coring tectonic windows (Window-Basement) in the Scandinavian Caledonides; parautochthonous (Model I) and allochthonous (models II/III), with initial imbrication of the Window-Basement post-dating or pre-dating, respectively, that in the external imbricate zone (Lower Allochthon). In Model I, the Window-Basement comes from the eastern margin of the basin now imbricated into the Lower Allochthon, while in models II/III it comes from the western margin. In Model II, the Window-Basement formed a basement-high between Tonian and Cryogenian sediments imbricated into the Middle and Lower allochthons; in Model III deposition of the Lower Allochthon sediments commenced …

Atlanta Ariejansseni, A New Species Of Shelled Heteropod From The Southern Subtropical Convergence Zone (Gastropoda, Pterotracheoidea), D Wall-Palmer, Ak Burridge, Ktca Peijnenburg
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Atlantidae (shelled heteropods) is a family of microscopic aragonite shelled holoplanktonic gastropods with a wide biogeographical distribution in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate waters. The aragonite shell and surface ocean habitat of the atlantids makes them particularly susceptible to ocean acidification and ocean warming, and atlantids are likely to be useful indicators of these changes. However, we still lack fundamental information on their taxonomy and biogeography, which is essential for monitoring the effects of a changing ocean. Integrated morphological and molecular approaches to taxonomy have been employed to improve the assessment of species boundaries, which give a more accurate picture …
Seasonal Sea Ice Variability In Eastern Fram Strait Over The Last 2000 Years, P Cabedo-Sanz, St Belt
Seasonal Sea Ice Variability In Eastern Fram Strait Over The Last 2000 Years, P Cabedo-Sanz, St Belt
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
We present a high-resolution (ca. 50 years) biomarker-based reconstruction of seasonal sea ice conditions for the West Svalbard continental margin covering the last ca. 2k years. Our reconstruction is based on the distributions of sea ice algal (IP25) and phytoplankton (brassicasterol and HBI III) lipids in marine sediment core MSM5/5-712-1 retrieved in 2007. The individual and combined (PIP25) temporal profiles, together with estimates of spring sea ice concentration [SpSIC (%)] based on a recent calibration, suggest that sea ice conditions during the interval ca. 50–1700 AD may not have been as variable as described in previous reconstructions, with SpSIC generally …

Geomorphic And Geological Constraints On The Active Normal Faulting Of The Gediz (Alaşehir) Graben, Western Turkey., E. Kent, S. J. Boulton, I. S. Stewart, A. C. Whittaker, Mc Alcicek
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Gediz (Alaşehir) Graben is located in the highly tectonically active region of Western Turkey. Extension due to regional geodynamic controls has resulted in a broadly two-phase evolution of the graben; firstly, low-angle normal faulting relating to the exhumation of the Menderes Massif metamorphic core complex took place between 16 - 2.6 Ma. Secondly, high-angle normal faulting initiated ~ 2 Ma forming the Gediz and other E-W trending grabens in the region. Here we quantify the throw rate along the fault array over the last 2.6, 2 and 0.7 Ma using structural and geological constraints, along with analysis of topographic …

Rapid development of information and communications technologies (ICT) has triggered profound changes in how people manage their social contacts in both informal and professional contexts. ICT mediated communication may seem limited in possibilities compared to face-to-face encounters, but research shows that puzzlingly often it can be just as effective and satisfactory. We posit that ICT users employ specific communication strategies adapted to particular communication channels, which results in a comparable effectiveness of communication. In order to maintain a satisfactory level of conversational intelligibility they calibrate the content of their messages to a given medium's richness and adjust the whole conversation …

Peat archives offer a diverse range of physical and chemical proxies from which it is possible to study past environmental and ecological changes. Direct numerical calibration and verification is difficult so process-based and mechanistic studies are therefore required to establish and quantify links between environmental changes and their associated proxy-responses. Traditional ‘space-for-time’ calibrations provide a solution to this calibration problem, but are often unable to isolate a single environmental variable from other potentially confounding variables. In this study, we explored the potential of a site-specific ‘space-for-time’ approach applied to a hummock-hollow transect on an ombrotrophic raised bog in Patagonia, southern …

Hole U1395B, drilled southeast of Montserrat during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 340, provides a long (>1 Ma) and detailed record of eruptive and mass-wasting events (>130 discrete events). This record can be used to explore the temporal evolution in volcanic activity and landslides at an arc volcano. Analysis of tephra fall and volcaniclastic turbidite deposits in the drill cores reveals three heightened periods of volcanic activity on the island of Montserrat (~930 to ~900 ka, ~810 to ~760 ka, and ~190 to ~120 ka) that coincide with periods of increased volcano instability and mass-wasting. The youngest of …

Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) are ubiquitous microbial lipids with extensive demonstrated and potential roles as paleoenvironmental proxies. Despite the great attention they receive, comparatively little is known regarding their diagenetic fate. Putative degradation products of GDGTs, identified as hydroxyl and carboxyl derivatives, were detected in lipid extracts of marine sediment, seep carbonate, hot spring sediment and cells of the marine thaumarchaeon Nitrosopumilus maritimus. The distribution of GDGT degradation products in environmental samples suggests that both biotic and abiotic processes act as sinks for GDGTs. More than a hundred newly recognized degradation products afford a view of the stepwise degradation …

The Changing Face Of Neolithic And Bronze Age Ireland: A Big Data Approach To The Settlement And Burial Records, Tr Mclaughlin, Nj Whitehouse, Rj Schulting, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This paper synthesizes and analyses the spatial and temporal patterns of archaeological sites in Ireland spanning the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age transition (4300-1900 cal BC). Included are a large number of unpublished, newly discovered sites excavated through development-led projects. Data were also sourced from national archives, published excavation reports and on-line databases. Software tools were developed to deal with the varying nature and resolution of these datasets, allowing chronology to be considered in the analysis to a degree that is usually not possible in prehistoric studies. Summed radiocarbon probabilities are used to examine the dataset using context- and …

Rock avalanches are one of the most hazardous landslide phenomena. They involve huge, extremely rapid flowing masses, carrying a strong power of destruction and reaching high mobility. The present article shows results of back-analysis of the Potrero de Leyes case in the Argentinian Andes. This rock avalanche has travelled on an unconstrained topography showing a great mobility, even without any channelizing effects. Simulations are carried out with VolcFlow, a continuum model, first on an unconstrained granular flow experiment and then on Potrero de Leyes. Results show that purely frictional model works well for the experiment, but that it can only …

Competitiveness, Profitability, Input Demand And Output Supply Of Maize Production In Bangladesh, S Rahman, M Kazal, I Begum, M Alam
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The study assesses international competitiveness, profitability, output supply and input demand of maize production using a farm survey data of 165 farmers from two major maize growing areas (i.e., Dinajpur and Lalmonirhat districts) of northwestern Bangladesh. Results revealed that maize production is globally competitive and, therefore, can successfully substitute its import. Maize production is also profitable at the farm level (Benefit Cost Ratio = 1.21) with no adverse influence of farm size on yield and profitability. Maize farmers are also responsive to changes in market prices of inputs and outputs. A 1% increase in maize price will increase output supply …
