Misdiagnosing Esophageal Perforation As Esophageal Atresia, Shaheed M. Meeralebbae, Seidahmed M. Zain, Abdelbasit O. Basir, Abdullah M. Ahmed, Abomelha M. Abdullah
Saudi Medical Journal
We report a case of traumatic perforation of esophagus misdiagnosed as esophageal atresia in a 1.7 kg preterm (28 weeks) twin. Initial resistance to the passage of orogastric tube and failure of passage of contrast material down the esophagus prompted the diagnosis of esophageal atresia. Subsequently, the passage of orogastric tube as well as radiological findings at the age of 7 days made us change the diagnosis to traumatic perforation of esophagus. The baby was managed conservatively and discharged in good health at the age of 2 months. Literature is reviewed and the attention of pediatricians is drawn to this …

Mode Of Loosening Of Matt-Finished Femoral Stems In Primary Total Hip Replacement, Yaser M. Behairy, William H. Harris
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Major advances have occurred in total hip replacement (THR) surgery aiming at minimizing or delaying loosening of the components. Currently, substantial controversy exists regarding the possible role of the surface finish of cemented femoral stems in the loosening process. Several authors have recently suggested that a roughened surface finish of the femoral component in cemented THR can predispose the implant to early loosening and subsequently severe osteolysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate both the incidence of, and the mode of loosening of the cemented femoral components in a large series of primary THR with matt-finished surface …

Complete Separation Of The Testis And Epididymis Presenting As Inguinal Hernia, Abdullatif A. Al-Arfaj, Ali A. Al-Saflan
Saudi Medical Journal
Complete separation of the epididymis from the testis is a rare phenomenon. In all reported cases, both structures remained undescended. We recently managed a 2-month-old boy with bilateral inguinal hernia and complete dissociation of the epididymis from the testis on the left side. At exploration, a right indirect inguinal hernia was confirmed while on the left side, an indirect inguinal hernia was associated with an undescended abdominal testis completely separated from a normally descended epididymis. This could reflect an essential role of the epididymis in the process of testicular descensus. The diversity of congenital abnormalities possibly encountered in the inguinoscrotal …
