Primary Thrombophilia In Saudi Arabia, Soad K. Al-Jaouni
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common disorder associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Considerable progress has been made in the understanding of the risk factors. Significant portion of patients develop VTE without obvious risk factors. The clinical applications of molecular techniques allowed identification of many important inherited, yet not uncommon risk factors. The aim of our study was to determine whether the activated protein C resistance (APCR)/Factor V Leiden (FVL), and prothrombin mutation as being the most common inherited risk factor for venous thrombosis among Saudi patients attending an anticoagulant clinic. METHODS: One hundred and seventy-nine consecutive patients (74 …

Surgery Versus Pharmacotherapy Of Benign Thyroid Diseases, Nidal A. Younes, Abla M. Albsoul
Saudi Medical Journal
Surgical management of benign thyroid diseases (BTDs) has been a topic of interest and confusion for many years. Almost 80% of thyroidectomies at an average endocrine surgical unit are carried out for BTDs. Resistance to surgical intervention in BTDs has been based on the belief that increased complication rate is inherent in its use, this is despite the potential advantages in terms of confirming the benign nature of the lesion, controlling the disease, and relieving local symptoms of large neck mass. Benign thyroid diseases are more likely to occur in middle-aged women living in iodine deficient areas, or have a …

Mayer-Rokintansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome Of Mullerian Agenesis, Bhavna Pandey, Ilham M. Hamdi
Saudi Medical Journal
Mullerian agenesis, a congenital malformation of the genital tract is the second most common cause of primary amenorrhoea. Its etiology is poorly understood. It may be associated with renal, skeletal or other abnormalities. The diagnosis is often made radiologically or laparoscopically. Three-dimensional ultrasound is a useful diagnostic tool. The hormonal profile and karyotype in these patients are normal. The management varies, but the treatment of choice is non surgical aimed at creating a neovagina. These patients require psychological support due to the implications for reproduction. Here, we present the case of a 24-year-old married woman with primary amenorrhoea with this …

Bilateral Additional Renal Arteries And An Additional Right Renal Vein Associated With Unrotated Kidneys, Alp Bayramoglu, Deniz Demiryurek, Kadriye M. Erbil

We report a rare anomaly of the kidneys and its vessels, which were found during the routine dissection of a 68-year-old male cadaver. The anomaly consisted of bilateral additional renal arteries originating from the abdominal aorta and an additional right renal vein accompanying the additional right renal artery. These anomalies were associated with unrotated kidneys with extrarenal calices and pelves. All the additional vessels were located posterior to the ureter with a close relationship to the ureteropelvic junction on the right side. Additional renal vessels arise as a result of the complicated development of kidneys and variations in the positional …
