Health Hazards Of Welding Fumes, Sultan A. Meo, Thamir Al-Khlaiwi
Health Hazards Of Welding Fumes, Sultan A. Meo, Thamir Al-Khlaiwi
Saudi Medical Journal
Even in the twenty-first century, welding is still a common and a highly skilled occupation. The hazardous agents associated with welding processes are acetylene, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, ozone, phosgene, tungsten, arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, silver, tin, and zinc. All welding processes involve the potential hazards for inhalation exposures that may lead to acute or chronic respiratory diseases. According to literature described earlier it has been suggested that welding fumes cause the lung function impairment, obstructive and restrictive lung disease, cough, dyspnea, rhinitis, asthma, pneumonitis, pneumoconiosis, carcinoma of the lungs. In addition, welding …

Students Perception Of The Various Teaching Methods Used In The Primary Health Care Course In The Abha , College Of Medicine, Ismail Abdelmoneim
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To describe students perception of the various teaching methods used in the Primary Health Care (PHC) course concerning the scientific material presented, information processing as well as motivation and importance attached by the students to each method. METHODS: A self-administered anonymous questionnaire was filled by the students of the sixth year (n=51) at the end of the course. This was structured into 3 main parts: a general part addressing the objectives of the course, the suitability of the course contents, the references and the importance of the course for the future career. The second part dealt with the suitability …

Deniz: The Electronic Database For B-Thalassemia Mutations In The Arab World, Ghazi O. Tadmouri, Resul I. Gulen
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Data on the distribution of beta-thalassemia mutations in Arab populations are usually destined to disparate locations and much of these become increasingly difficult for an average researcher to locate. That is why we aimed at establishing an electronic database network, called Deniz, for beta-thalassemia allele frequency distributions in the Arab world at http://biobase.fatih.edu.tr. METHODS: The scheme of the database combines the benefits of the relational and hierarchical systems. Detailed statistics of the frequencies of beta-thalassemia mutations are retrieved in tabular forms. Multiple permanent connections allow flexible movement within the database. Queries are processed by the systems language and sent …

Quick Gene Expression Profiling Of Promyelocytic Cell Line Hl-60, Syed S. Hussain, Hala S. Khalil, Tala M. Bakheet
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: A number of techniques have been developed to perform gene expression profiling. We report preliminary results from our exploratory study, using sequential analysis of gene expression (SAGE) technique, to profile the undifferentiated and differentiated HL-60 cells in line with our interest to characterize the cancer phenotype. The aim of the study is to evaluate the technique and to understand the molecular bases of these 2 states of cells. METHODS: HL-60 cells were differentiated after treatment with dimethyl sulfoxide. Tag libraries were prepared from the messenger RNAs of the undifferentiated and differentiated cells according to the SAGE protocol. The search …

Metallothionein Expression In Human Prostate Gland, Ziad M. Bataineh, Mohamad K. Nusier
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: This study is conducted to detect metallothionein (MT) distribution in the epithelial cells of prostate gland from patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Prostatic tissues from patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and adenocarcinoma were processed for immunocytochemistry using indirect peroxidase antiperoxidase procedure and primary antibody against MT. The samples were collected over a period of 2-3 years and were processed at Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan in the year 2002. RESULTS: All prostatic tissues showed a positive reaction for MT. In benign prostatic hypertrophy, MT was mainly localized in the nuclei of epithelial cells …

Pelvic Hematoma Resulting In Obstructive Uropathy, Ahmed A. Abdulwahab, Salah Hassan, Lulu Al-Nuaim, Rabie Abdel Halim
Saudi Medical Journal
The use of anticoagulants, for whatever indication, may carry a high risk of hematoma formation following surgery. Obstructive uropathy is a very rare but possible example of complication secondary to an extensive pelvic hematoma. We describe a case of a patient with rheumatic heart disease and aortic valve replacement, who developed a massive postoperative pelvic hematoma following bilateral tubal ligation, resulting in bilateral ureteric obstructions. This was treated with bilateral ureteric stent through cystoscopy.

Saudi Medical Journal
The terms Brunners gland adenoma and hamartoma are 2 pathological expressions of hyperplasia of these glands. We report 3 patients and review the recent literature to support our hypothesis of common pathology. Awareness of the existence and character of Brunners gland lesions will increase the possibility of their accurate diagnosis.

A case of Gemella morbillorum (G.morbillorum) endocarditis of the mitral valve in a patient with previously normal heart valves is reported. The presentation was subacute, and the infection was complicated by perforation of the posterior mitral leaflet that necessitated valve repair. Gemella morbillorum infections are uncommon, and endocarditis is the most common presentation. G.morbillorum endocarditis is probably under recognized, and has not been reported from our region. The case is described, and problems in the identification of the organism are discussed.

Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Searching For A Better Understanding, Mostafa Q. Al-Shamiri, Mansour M. Al-Nozha
Saudi Medical Journal
Congestive heart failure is an uncommon complication of pregnancy with potentially life-threatening consequences. Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a disease of unknown cause in which severe left ventricular dysfunction occurs during late pregnancy or the early puerperium. In the past, the diagnosis of this entity was made on clinical grounds; however, modern echocardiographic techniques have allowed more accurate diagnoses by excluding cases of diseases that mimic the clinical symptoms and signs of heart failure. Risk factors for peripartum cardiomyopathy include advanced maternal age, multiparity, African descent, twinning, and long-term tocolysis. An extensive search for the causes of peripartum cardiomyopathy has been …

Mesenteric Cystic Lymphangioma, Abdullatif A. Al-Arfaj, Hakam A. Yaseen
Saudi Medical Journal
Abdominal cystic lymphangioma is a very rare congenital tumor of lymphatic origin. It usually appears in the pediatric age and frequently presents with non-specific symptoms and deceptive signs causing, at times, diagnostic dilemmas. Ultrasonography and computer tomography imaging are considered the diagnostic modalities of choice. Two cases of mesenteric cystic lymphangioma, one presenting as perforated appendicitis and the other as recurrent gastritis, are reported. Infection in the first and volvulus in the second case is behind the mode of presentation. The diagnostic approach and treatment are described, with emphasis on the operative tactic applied for upper jejunal resection. A high …

Perforated Appendicitis Within Paraumbilical Hernia, Hamad H. Al-Qahtani, Tariq Z. Al-Qahtani
Saudi Medical Journal
The appendix is not uncommonly encountered within an external hernial sac. However, acute appendicitis in hernia is quite rare. We report a female patient who was admitted and operated as a case of incarcerated, strangulated paraumbilical hernia and the hernial sac was found to contain part of the greater omentum, pus and acutely inflamed, gangrenous appendix, perforated at the tip. Appendicectomy and hernial repair were carried out through the same incision.
