Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To research the effects of blood cortisol and hemoglobinA1c (HBA1C) levels on mortality in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and whether these factors could be used as reliable indicators for mortality risk assessment in these patients. Methods: After receiving approval from the ethics committee, 79 patients admitted to ICU were included in the study. From patient files, we collected data on demographics (age, gender), presence of diabetes mellitus, and levels of cortisol, HbA1C, glucose, and lactate measured during hospitalization, along with acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II scores calculated within the first 24 hours. …

The Association Of The Hepatitis B Virus Infection And Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, Guodong Yu, Jijing Han, Jianmei Xu

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To investigate the basic characteristics of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and whether hepatitis B surface antigen positive (HBsAg [+]) affects the survival of patients with DLBCL. Methods: The study was carried out at Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University, Baoding, China, including 602 DLBCL cases from January 2011 to December 2021. We analyzed patients’ general clinical data and applied multivariate and univariate Cox analyses to assess the factors influencing their survival times. Results: The HBsAg(+) and HBsAg(-) groups comprised 154 (25.6%) and 448 (74.4%) of the 602 cases, respectively. HBsAg(+) cases tended to be later-stage (III–IV) with …

Molecular Epidemiology And Molecular Typing Methods Of Acinetobacter Baumannii: An Updated Review, Razique Anwer

Saudi Medical Journal

The aim of this study was to go through the molecular methods used for typing of carbapenem-resistant Acientobacter baumannii (CRAB) isolates for investigating the molecular epidemiology all over the world. Multiple typing techniques are required to understand the source and nature of outbreaks caused by Acientobacter baumannii ( A. baumannii ) and acquired resistance to antimicrobials. Nowadays, there is gradual shift from traditional typing methods to modern molecular methods to study molecular epidemiology and infection control. Molecular typing of A. baumannii strains has been revolutionized significantly in the last 2 decades. A few sequencing-based techniques have been proven as a …

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To assess the clinical relevance and prognostic value of changes in the Naples prognostic score (NPS) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACR) among esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. Methods: We studied 232 locally advanced ESCC patients who received NACR before undergoing esophagectomy retrospectively. Categorizing individuals into the elevated NPS group and the non-elevated NPS group based on the change in NPS after NACR (ΔNPS > 0 or ∆NPS ≤ 0), we examined and compared the clinicopathological characteristics, survival rates, and postoperative complications between these 2 groups (∆NPS = post-NACR NPS - pre-NACR NPS). Results: Results: Out of the 232 patients enrolled, …

Bilateral Renal Lymphangiectasia: Literature Review Of A Rare Entity, Abdullah Ayed, Shahzada Khalid Sohail, Syeda Fatima Rizvi, Raed I. Alwadai

Saudi Medical Journal

Renal lymphangiectasia (RL) is a rare condition in which lymphatic vessels are dilated giving rise to cyst formation in peripelvic, perirenal and intrarenal locations. Knowledge about RL is limited and based upon individual case reports. This can be genetic or acquired. There is no significant association with any gender or age. It can be manifested as focal or diffuse forms and can be unilateral or bilateral. Most of the cases present with abdominal or flank pain. The diagnosis is based on radiological imaging. Due to rarity of diseases, it has potential to be misdiagnosed as other cystic disease of kidneys. …

The Evolvement Of Breast Cancer Therapies: What We Have Done And Where All These Head Off, Ika Nurlaila, Sabar Pambudi

Saudi Medical Journal

Although, from a therapeutic standpoint, breast cancer (BC) is considerably well-characterized, it still leaves puzzling spots. The Her-2+/PR+/ER+ BC can benefit from the mainstays of anticancer therapy and immunotherapy and overall have a better prognosis. Triple-negative BC, due to the concomitant absence of Her-2/PR/ER receptors, is more challenging and necessitates different strategies. It has been learned that the mainstay anti-BC therapies were initially designed to demolish as many cancer cells as they possibly could. However, the number of reports on the adverse effects of these mainstay therapies has recently been increasing. It underpins efforts to reshape such therapies into much …

Methods: Heart failure enrollees (younger than 45 years, body mass index [BMI] of ≥25 kg/m 2 ) who received medical treatment at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Beijing, China, were classified into 2 groups according to whether they experienced significant WL (≥5% from baseline one year after discharge). One-year occurrence rate of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) comprising cardiac death and rehospitalization for HF was determined. Results: Of the 191 individuals recruited for this study, 47 had significant WL. The incidence of ischemic …

We compared Caprini scores (defined at admission) and Padua scores (calculated retrospectively) for their ability to predict VTE. A cumulative risk score was created by adding the individual scores for each risk factor. We also analyzed the sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of the RAM scores. Results: Major differences …

Risk Factors For Severe Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia In A Chinese Cohort Of Very Preterm Infants, Jing Huang, Wei Shen, Fan Wu, Jian Mao, Ling Liu, Yanmei Chang, Rong Zhang, Xiuzhen Ye, Yinping Qiu, Li Ma, Rui Cheng, Hui Wu, Dongmei Chen, Ling Chen, Ping Xu, Hua Mei, Sannan Wang, Falin Xu, Rong Ju, Zhi Zheng, Xinzhu Lin, Xiaomei Tong

Saudi Medical Journal

ABSTRACT Objectives: To examine the risk factors for severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in a cohort of very preterm infants (VPIs) in China, as BPD is common among VPIs and associated with a high mortality rate. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective study, medical records from infants with BPD born at gestation age (GA) of <32 weeks with birth weight (BW) of <1,500 grams (g) in 7 regions of China were included. The cohort was stratified into different BPD severity groups based on their fraction of inspired oxygen requirement at a modified GA of 36 weeks or post discharge. Risk factors were identified using logistic regression analysis. Results: A significant inverse correlation was revealed between BPD severity and both GA and BW ( p <0.001). Independent risk factors for severe BPD (sBPD) were identified as invasive mechanical ventilation (≥7d), multiple blood transfusion (≥3), nosocomial infection (NI), hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA), delayed initiation of enteral nutrition, and longer time to achieve total caloric intake of 110 kcal/kg. Conversely, administration of antenatal steroids was associated with reduced risk of sBPD. Conclusion: Our study not only reaffirmed the established risk factors of low GA and BW for sBPD in VPIs, but also identified additional, potentially modifiable risk factors. Further research is warranted to explore whether intervention in these modifiable factors might reduce the risk of sBPD. Clinical Trial Reg. No.: ChiCTR1900023418
