OBJECTIVE: To find out the frequency of childhood lymphomas in all ages, and to describe patterns of lymphomas in relation to gender and site in Yemen. METHODS: This is a descriptive record-based study of 1167 cases of lymphomas diagnosed by 3 pathologists in the Department of Pathology, Sana9a University, Sana9a, Yemen from 1st January 2004 to 30th December 2007. The diagnoses were made on hematoxylin and eosin stained, and categorized non-Hodgkin9s lymphoma (NHL) according to the National Cancer Institute Working Formulation classification, and Hodgkin9s disease (HD) according to Rye classification. OBJECTIVE: To explore junior and senior students9 perceptions of their self-directed learning (SDL) capabilities in an innovative graduate-entry medical program and to determine the construct reliability of the survey instrument utilized. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design in which a self-report questionnaire was administered to undergraduate medical students (n=43) of King Saud bin Abdul Aziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh in October 2008 and March 2009; soon after entry and in their year 3 of an integrated problem-based learning (PBL) program. OBJECTIVE: To determine the trend of health care associated blood stream infection (HA-BSI) at Saudi Aramco Medical Services Organization. METHODS: This prospective survey was conducted during the year 2002-2006. Definitions of HA-BSI infections were based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention categories. RESULTS: There were a total of 1103 distinct episodes of HA-BSI with annual average rates of 8.5 per 1000 discharges and 18 per 10,000 patient-days. Of all episodes, 38% were primary, 47% were central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), and the remaining 15% were secondary bacteremias. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the importance of ophthalmological examination in children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). METHODS: This study was conducted at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of Al-Ramadi Teaching Hospital in Al-Ramadi city, Iraq from 20 December 2007 to 30 October 2008. Fifty children with congenital SNHL were included in this prospective study. Ophthalmological examination was carried out for all patients. RESULTS: Out of 50 patients with SNHL, 16 (32%) had ocular abnormalities. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the predictive accuracy of using a combination of the high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) retention time and the relative isoelectric focusing (IEF) position to diagnose rare hemoglobin variants. METHODS: A selected group of 40 patients with a rare beta-chain variant were assigned a presumed diagnosis following HPLC and IEF screening and then the variant identified in each case by DNA analysis. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility of the Gram-negative bacteria isolated from 2 hospitals in Makkah. METHODS: This study was undertaken in 2 main tertiary care hospitals namely; Al-Noor Specialist Hospital, and Hera Hospital in Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from October 2005 to March 2006. A total of 1137 Gram-negative bacteria were identified in non-duplicate clinical specimens obtained from 965 patients of various body sites infections. Demographic data, identity of microorganisms, and antimicrobial susceptibilities were obtained from medical and laboratory records. OBJECTIVE: To study the bacteriological profile, and to determine predictors of bile infection and septic complications following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study reviewed 1248 laparoscopic cholecystectomy cases performed between January 1994 and December 2007 by one surgical team at the Jordan University Hospital, Amman, Jordan. Bile cultures were performed for all patients and statistical analysis was performed on culture results and postoperative complications as well as, on the possible predictors of bile infection including age, gender, associated diseases, preoperative retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and indications for surgery. OBJECTIVE: To define the clinical, radiographic, and bronchoscopic features, and to describe the occupations of the largest group of patients with anthracosis. METHODS: All patients who underwent flexible bronchoscopy at 2 Iranian hospitals (Imam Hospital [Tehran], and Tohid Hospital [Sanandaj]), Iran, between April 1982 and June 2006 were considered for inclusion in the study. The demographic data, clinical, and radiographic findings of anthracotic and anthracofibrotic patients were recorded. Salmonella Species Group B Causing Endocarditis Of The Prosthetic Mitral Valve, Nisreen M. Al-Sherbeeni

The Salmonella species is an extremely rare cause of infective endocarditis. This case report is for Salmonella spp. group B proven by positive multiple blood cultures, and positive intraoperative culture from the vegetation of the mitral valve prosthesis.
