OBJECTIVE: To determine the prognostic value of beta human chorionic gonadotropin (B-hCG) concentration on the sixteenth day after embryo transfer to predict pregnancy outcome. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, B-hCG levels were measured in 97 pregnant women that underwent intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in Fatemeh-Zahra Infertility and Reproductive Health Research Center, Babol University of Medical Sciences, Babol, Iran from January 2008 to December 2009. OBJECTIVE: To study the association of consanguinity as a risk factor for congenital heart diseases (CHDs). METHODS: Patients with suggestive signs of CHD admitted to the Al-Ramadi Maternity and Children Hospital, Al-Anbar Governorate, Iraq from January 2009 to January 2010 were subject to diagnostic investigations. Case data includes: name, age, gender, and cause of admission. Parents data includes: age, residence, degree of consanguinity, and history of family recurrent CHDs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the major modifiable risk factors of stroke among stroke patients in Al-Anbar Province, western Iraq. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on stroke patients admitted in the Internal Medical Department, Al-Ramadi Teaching Hospital from January to August 2009. Informative and detailed history was obtained concerning the presence of risk factor(s) and essential demographic data. General and neurological examinations, biochemical and laboratory investigations, in addition to brain CT-scanning were performed. OBJECTIVE: To determine the knowledge, attitude, and use of primary health care (PHC) physicians of online continuous medical education (OCME) in the regions of Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis using a self administered questionnaire. The physician sample was selected to cover all Riyadh regions (city of Riyadh, and all accessible clinics in the villages, and cities outside of Riyadh). OBJECTIVE: To assess the referral pattern and identify the appropriateness of the referral letter and consultant’s feedback. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed at the Family Medicine Department, Sharurah Armed Forces Hospital (SAFH), Sharurah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study population (sampled population) included all referrals in one month (June 2009). Carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase (CACT) deficiency (McKusick 212138) is a rare life threatening disorder characterized by hypoketotic hypoglycemia, hyperammonemia, encephalopathy, cardiomyopathy hepatopathy, and myopathy. Here, we present a detailed clinical course of 3 Saudi siblings with a severe phenotype. The third patient was described in more detail. Early medical intervention in the form of 25% dextrose intravenous infusion and carnitine supplement followed by a gradual introduction of a high carbohydrate low fat special formula resulted in a good clinical and biochemical response to the treatment in our patient. However, early nephrocalcinosis, severe hypotonia, and subsequently intravascular cerebral accident could not be prevented. …

OBJECTIVE: To determine the molecular characterization of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) isolates from a tertiary center in Saudi Arabia using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique and assess their antibiotic susceptibility pattern. METHODS: Prospective study conducted at the Saudi Aramco Dhahran Health Center, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia between April-December 2006. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases phenotype of isolates identified by automated methods was confirmed using E-test. Multiplex PCR for the detection of blaTEM, blaSHV and blaCTX-M was performed. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study compared the prevalence of CVD between medical and non-medical Pakistani students. OBJECTIVE: To illustrate our experience and the difficulty faced in primary total hip replacement (THR) in Saudi patient population. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our database between February 2002 to December 2007 for primary THR cases at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and identified 58 hips (54 patients). Patients data were collected from patient9s medical records, clinical examination, and x-ray films. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the side effects of methotrexate (MTX) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and to evaluate the possible predisposing variables. METHODS: A retrospective analysis conducted for all patients diagnosed with RA and treated with MTX over 3-years (January 2006 to December 2008) at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the immunohistochemical and epidemiological characteristics of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) in a Middle Eastern population. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of all intra-abdominal mesenchymal tumors (excluding childhood embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and small round blue cell tumors) collected from the archives of the Pathology Departments of King Hussein Cancer Center, Amman, and King Abdullah University Hospital, Irbid, Jordan between 2001 and 2008. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of diet and physical activity on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) after adjusting for family history of diabetes. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study in Al-Qassim, KSA to test the hypothesis that dietary practices and physical activity modify the risk of type 2 diabetes regardless of family history.
