Early Neonatal Sepsis And Meningitis Caused By Elizabethkingia Meningoseptica In Saudi Arabia, Ashwaq I. Barnawi, Faisal N. Kordy, Ohoud K. Almuwallad, Khloud A. Kassarah
Saudi Medical Journal
Elizabethkingia meningoseptica ( E. meningoseptica ) are Gram-negative bacteria commonly associated with nosocomial infections in neonates. This is a case study of E. meningoseptica , presented as meningitis and sepsis in a term baby. The female infant was born by vaginal delivery at 37 weeks gestational age. The case was peculiar because the baby was neither premature nor immuno-compromised, which are known risk factors for E. meningoseptica infection. The onset began on the second day of the neonate’s life. On day 3, peripheral blood culture and cerebrospinal fluid findings isolated a gram-negative bacteria identified as E. meningoseptica . The first-line …

Objectives: To provide more data regarding the role of an amperometric glucometer in diagnosing meningitis. Methods: This is a prospective study conducted at the Pediatric and Neonatology Department, Qatif Central Hospital, Qatif, Saudi Arabia between March 2017 and September 2018. We measured glucose concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood using a central laboratory and amperometric glucometer (AG). We compared CSF/blood glucose ratios obtained in a central laboratory from clinical bedside examination with a glucometer, and calculated the sensitivity and specificity for detecting cases of meningitis. Results: A total of 101 patients with clinical suspicion of meningitis were recruited for …

Prediction Of Retinopathy Of Prematurity Using The Screening Algorithm Winrop In A Saudi Cohort Of Preterm Infants, Lina H. Raffa, Sarah K. Alessa, Aliaa S. Alamri, Rawan H. Malaikah
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To validate the web weight gain-based WINROP (weight, insulin-like growth factor I, neonatal, retinopathy of prematurity [ROP]) algorithm retrospectively to identify type 1 ROP in a Saudi cohort of premature infants. Methods: The records of preterm infants (>23 and <32 weeks gestation) born between August 2013 and October 2018, were reviewed. Birth weight, gestational age, and weekly weight measurements of the premature infants were entered online. Based on weekly weight gain, the WINROP algorithm alerted clinicians whether infants were at high-risk for vision-threatening type 1 ROP. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were calculated. Results: The median gestational age of the infants at birth was 28 weeks, with median birth weight at 1085 g. Of the 175 infants included in the study, 13 (7.4%) developed type 1 ROP. WINROP positive alarm was triggered in 70.9% (124/175) of all infants and 100% (13/13) of those treated for type 1 ROP. The specificity of the algorithm was 31.5%. Positive predictive values was 10.5% and negative was 100%. Conclusion: The general WINROP sensitivity in identifying type 1 ROP was 100% similar to that reported in developed countries; however, its specificity was low at 31.5%. Tweaking of the algorithm based on the population may increase the specificity and promote the practical utility of this non-invasive screening tool for ophthalmologists and neonatologists in this population.

Electronic Medical Records And Health Care Promotion In Saudi Arabia: An Overview, Sana A. Alsadrah
Electronic Medical Records And Health Care Promotion In Saudi Arabia: An Overview, Sana A. Alsadrah
Saudi Medical Journal
A few decades ago, the government of Saudi Arabia introduced electronic medical records (EMRs) in some health care facilities. However, the progress in adopting these systems on a national level was slow. In 2008, the Saudi Ministry of Health started an initiative to expand and optimize the use of EMRs in governmental health care institutions. However, some obstacles facing this ambitious plan remain, including negative attitudes of some health care professionals toward EMR systems. Other barriers include poor computer literacy, lack of system customization to hospital needs, and poor support and training from information technology (IT) personnel. Identifying and addressing …

Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To assess bone mineral density (BMD) of children with short stature using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and compare it to children with normal height. Methods: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional controlled study between May 2018 and February 2019 at various pediatric clinics in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In total, 219 children were included: 100 had short stature, and 119 were of normal height. Data were collected from one-on-one interviews, and BMD was measured using quantitative ultrasound. Results: Children with short stature had significantly lower BMD z-scores than children with normal height ( p <0.05). The use of vitamin D supplements was related to higher BMD z-scores in children with short stature (p<0.05). A significant association was found between higher BMD z-scores, and both age ( p =0.05) and height ( p =0.02). Through a further division of children with short stature into those with and those without growth hormone deficiencies, we show that growth hormone deficiency was positively associated with lower BMD z-scores; however, the p -value was 0.06. Conclusions: Compared with children of normal height, those with short stature had lower BMD. Height, vitamin D supplementation, and age were all significantly correlated with higher BMD, while growth hormone deficiency was correlated with lower BMD.

Obesity is threatening the healthy being of many youngsters throughout the world. Environmental influences have indicated to effect even genetically safe subjects among which parental neglect seems to be most alarming. Two extensively and globally investigated variables, the feeding style and the physical activity, provide some hope in its prevention. Despite the high rise of obesity prevalence in Saudi Arabia, there is scant research on these topics. The purpose of …
