Paleoclimatological information derived from the study of lacustrine sedimentary records is not only biased by taphonomical processes but also by potential differences in the expression of climate variability in the sediments due to site-specific factors. Using a multiproxy approach (the elemental and isotopic compositions of organic matter, diatom assemblages, and marker pigments of algae and cyanobacteria), we study the different environmental signatures recorded since the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the sediments of two volcanic lakes located within the same caldera on São Miguel Island (Azores Archipelago). Lake Santiago is a crater lake whose eutrophic status in the last stage …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The capability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for sparse representation has significant application to complex tasks like Representation Learning (RL). However, labelled datasets of sufficient size for learning this representation are not easily obtainable. The unsupervised learning capability of Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) provide a promising solution to this issue through their capacity to learn representations for novel data samples and classification tasks. In this research, a texture-based latent space disentanglement technique is proposed to enhance learning of representations for novel data samples. A comparison is performed among different VAEs and GANs with the proposed approach …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Chronic pancreatitis increases the risk of developing pancreatic cancer through the upregulation of pathways favouring proliferation, fibrosis, and sustained inflammation. We established in previous studies that the ligand tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) signals through its cognate receptor fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 (Fn14) to regulate these underlying cellular processes in the chronic liver injury niche. However, the role of the TWEAK/Fn14 signalling pathway in pancreatic disease is entirely unknown. An analysis of publicly available datasets demonstrated that the TWEAK receptor Fn14 is upregulated in pancreatitis and pancreatic adenocarcinoma, with single cell RNA sequencing revealing pancreatic ductal …

Navigating Midwifery Solidarity: A Feminist Participatory Action Research Framework, Katherine Buchanan, Elizabeth Newnham, Sadie Geraghty, Lisa Whitehead
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background:
A core aspect of midwifery philosophy is the optimisation of normal physiology; however, this has been challenged as a radical idea in the medicalisation of birth. Research has demonstrated the benefits of midwifery in improving outcomes for both mothers and babies. The understanding of midwifery benefits fails to reach wider sociocultural contexts as births becomes more medicalised. Midwifery research requires an action arm, to help translate theory to practice and mobilise midwives in solidarity with women towards action and change.
Aim:
The aim of this article is to describe a Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) by establishing the philosophical …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
For Muslims, all aspects of human life including politics and leadership are governed by the Holy Qur’an. One of the well-known verses is QS. An-Nisa 4:59 which instructs the Muslims to obey uli’l-amr. The literature, however, shows that the scope of obedience is not absolute. Resultantly, the current research aims to understand the tax compliance in the context of obedience to authority. It provides a contemporary viewpoint from the Islamic boarding school (pesantren) communities in Depok, Indonesia about enrichment. Both quantitative research and field observations have been used to accomplish the research goals. Focusing on the pesantren communities’ support for …

Marine water temperatures are increasing globally, with eastern Australian estuaries warming faster than predicted. There is growing evidence that this rapid warming of coastal waters is increasing the abundance and virulence of pathogenic members of the Vibrionaceae, posing a significant health risk to both humans and aquatic organisms. Fish disease, notably outbreaks of emerging pathogens in response to environmental perturbations such as heatwaves, have been recognised in aquaculture settings. Considerably less is known about how rising sea surface temperatures will impact the microbiology of wild fish populations, particularly those within estuarine systems that are more vulnerable to warming. We used …
Joining Bits And Pieces: A Chinese Indonesian Mother–Daughter Collaborative Witnessing As A Resource For Writing An Autobiographical Novel, Alberta N. Adji
Joining Bits And Pieces: A Chinese Indonesian Mother–Daughter Collaborative Witnessing As A Resource For Writing An Autobiographical Novel, Alberta N. Adji
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In this article, I as researcher and my mother as collaborator present small stories about our own and my late grandmother’s lived experiences during the New Order and Reformasi eras in Indonesia. Both perform a collaborative witnessing, which is a form of “relational autoethnography” that enables researchers to focus on and evocatively tell the lives of others through conversation and shared storytelling as a source that informs my life writing practice. Collaborating with my mother, this article is a reflection on how I, as a young Chinese Indonesian woman writer, capture and negotiate my family’s hybrid identities as double minorities …
The Clinical Suitability Of An Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Pain Assessment Tool For Use In Infants: Feasibility And Usability Evaluation Study, Jeffery David Hughes, Paola Chivers, Kreshnik Hoti
The Clinical Suitability Of An Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Pain Assessment Tool For Use In Infants: Feasibility And Usability Evaluation Study, Jeffery David Hughes, Paola Chivers, Kreshnik Hoti
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Infants are unable to self-report their pain, which, therefore, often goes underrecognized and undertreated. Adequate assessment of pain, including procedural pain, which has short- and long-term consequences, is critical for its management. The introduction of mobile health–based (mHealth) pain assessment tools could address current challenges and is an area requiring further research. Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy and feasibility aspects of PainChek Infant and, therefore, assess its applicability in the intended setting. Methods: By observing infants just before, during, and after immunization, we evaluated the accuracy and precision at different cutoff scores of …
Patterns Of Cannabis- And Substance-Related Congenital General Anomalies In Europe: A Geospatiotemporal And Causal Inferential Study, Albert Stuart Reece, Gary Kenneth Hulse
Patterns Of Cannabis- And Substance-Related Congenital General Anomalies In Europe: A Geospatiotemporal And Causal Inferential Study, Albert Stuart Reece, Gary Kenneth Hulse
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction:
Recent series of congenital anomaly (CA) rates (CARs) have showed the close and epidemiologically causal relationship of cannabis exposure to many CARs. We investigated these trends in Europe where similar trends have occurred.
Methods:
CARs from EUROCAT. Drug use from European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction. Income data from World Bank. Results: CARs were higher in countries with increasing daily use overall (p = 9.99 × 10−14, minimum E-value (mEV) = 2.09) and especially for maternal infections, situs inversus, teratogenic syndromes and VACTERL syndrome (p = 1.49 × 10−15, mEV = 3.04).
