Constitutive Behaviour, Failure Mechanisms, And Life Cycle Assessment Of Internally Cured Fiber-Reinforced High-Strength Concrete, Kastro Kiran V, Dhanya Sathyan, Sanjay Kumar Shukla

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

High-strength concrete (HSC) with low water-to-cement ratios undergoes self-desiccation, resulting in incomplete hydration, capillary porosity, and autogenous shrinkage that can compromise long-term performance. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) functions as an internal curing agent by releasing stored water as internal relative humidity decreases, thereby sustaining hydration within the cement matrix. However, the combined influence of PEG grade, dosage, and fibre type on the constitutive response, fracture behaviour, and environmental performance of M65 HSC remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated twelve concrete mixes incorporating three curing regimes viz. Conventional curing, spray curing, and PEG-based internal curing (IC) using PEG 4000 (1.5%) and PEG …

Wevit: Weight-Entangled Vision Transformers With Class-Specific Attention For Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation, Narges Saeedizadeh, Seyed Mohammad Jafar Jalali, Burhan Khan, Shady Mohamed

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS) is a challenging task in computer vision, as it relies on limited supervision to generate precise object localization maps, often using Class Activation Maps (CAMs). Traditional methods struggle with balancing localization accuracy and scalability due to their reliance on fixed network architectures and handcrafted strategies. Neural Architecture Search (NAS), despite its proven success in optimizing network designs across tasks, has not yet been explored in WSSS due to the need for efficient weight sharing. To address these limitations, we propose WEViT, a novel framework that integrates NAS with transformers to optimize network architectures and generate …

Exploring Traditional Breast Cancer Risk Genes Among Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Women, Katie Meehan, Leanne Pilkington, Azim Khan, Nicholas Pachter, Lisa Spalding, Ayeisha Milligan Armstrong, Cameron Redfern, Andrew Redfern

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Germline pathogenic variants in BRCA1/2 increase breast and ovarian cancer risk, but their prevalence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (herein referred to as Aboriginal) families has never been studied. Consequently, their contribution to breast cancer in this population is unknown.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 259 Aboriginal women and 789 age- and remoteness-matched non-Aboriginal women diagnosed with breast cancer (2001–2016). We assessed family history, genetic service referral and testing rates, and pathogenic variant rates in the context of testing access.

Results: Family history data were available for more Aboriginal than non-Aboriginal cases (46% vs. 34%, p < 0.001), with no difference in reported first-degree relatives with breast (22.5% vs. 22.4%, p = 0.98) or ovarian cancer (4.2% vs. 2.2%, p = 0.29). Similar proportions were referred to genetic services for testing eligibility (5.4% vs. 7.2%, p = 0.392). Of those referred, similar proportions were offered testing (86% vs. 81%, p = 0.66). Across the full cohort, BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants were detected in 0.77% of Aboriginal versus 2.4% of non-Aboriginal women (p = 0.127); any pathogenic gene variant was detected in 0.77% versus 3.0% (p = 0.039).

Reinforcement Learning For Cathode Material Design Through Sequential Decision-Making Frameworks, Taimoor Muzaffar Gondal, Muhammad Qasim, Yasir Arafat

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The cathode material design is a persistent challenge in the development of next-generation rechargeable batteries. The cathode performance is critically influenced by certain key parameters, i.e., composition, crystal structures, ion transport, and degradation behaviour. Moreover, techno-economic and sustainable considerations also play a pivotal role in the viable cathode material design. In recent years, the integration of static machine learning models with conventional experimental techniques has significantly enhanced the cathode material design. However, the sequential nature of cathode discovery has not been fully captured by these techniques as they do not update their decision strategy based on prior outcomes. In this …

Musical Training Increases Anticipatory Responding And Predictive Control In Sequence Learning, Li Ann Leow, Jarrad Lum, Sara Johnson, Emily Corti, Welber Marinovic

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Musicians demonstrate advantages in acquiring motor sequences, showing faster learning and better explicit sequence knowledge than non-musicians. However, it is unclear whether this advantage extends beyond acquisition to the consolidation phase, which is when newly learned skills stabilize and become resistant to interference. Additionally, while interference from executing competing motor tasks is well-established, less is known about whether purely sensory information presented after learning can disrupt consolidation of a bimodal motor sequence. We investigated how post-acquisition sensory interference affects performance of a learned audio-visual sequence, and whether musical training moderates this vulnerability. Participants first learned an explicit sequence in a …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that develops many years before clinical symptoms appear. The biological changes involved in the earliest stages remain poorly understood, particularly during the preclinical stage. Our previous work has identified gradual gut microbial and metabolic changes during this stage, suggesting these may represent early biological shifts that precede disease progression. Recent studies suggest that the gut microbiome may contribute to early AD processes through its effects on immune regulation, metabolism, and gut–brain communication. Changes in gut microbial composition, including reduced levels of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria, such as Faecalibacterium, Roseburia, and Eubacterium, …

Conservation translocations require careful assessment of dietary resources to ensure population viability. Here, we used environmental DNA metabarcoding to characterise fungal assemblages across three major habitat types on Dirk Hartog Island, Western Australia, prior to the planned reintroduction of two threatened mycophagous species: the boodie (Bettongia lesueur) and woylie (Bettongia ogilbyi). We detected 243 fungal ASVs, of which 75 represented taxa that are likely to produce macroscopic fruiting bodies accessible to mycophagous mammals. Ectomycorrhizal fungi dominated all habitats, with Pezizaceae being the most abundant family—a pattern consistent with known dietary preferences of both species across multiple Australian locations. Fungal community …

Background: Preparing midwifery graduates to be confident, competent, and resilient is essential for workforce sustainability, yet students report a disconnect between academic preparation and clinical realities. Increasing care complexity, workforce shortages, and variable clinical learning environments globally highlight the need to examine how educational strategies support effective transition to practice. Objective: To map and synthesise the evidence regarding educational approaches, learning experiences, and transition-to-practice factors that influence preparedness for professional practice among midwifery students, and to identify gaps in the existing literature to inform a coherent and future-ready educational framework.

Methods: A PRISMA-ScR-guided scoping review was conducted across seven databases. …

Introduction: The analysis of metabolic profiles using high resolution mass spectrometry (MS) data provides deep insights into biological processes. In metabolomics, MS analysis generates a large number of features that represent metabolites. However, identifying specific metabolites from these features can be challenging. One of the major bottlenecks in the metabolomics field is the identification of MS features, which is a prerequisite for any biochemical interpretation. By identifying similarities and differences within a metabolite family (mFam), evaluating MS features at the metabolite family level can help assigning functional roles to individual MS features. These data can help interpreting metabolic pathways and …

The Reliability And Validity Of Manual Palpation To Assess Lower Limb Arterial Occlusion Pressure In Older Adults, For Application In Blood Flow Restriction Exercise, Michael Beere, Isaac Selva Raj, Jeremiah J. Peiffer, Keith D. Hill, Peter K. Edwards, Belinda Brown, Brendan R. Scott

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

(A) Investigate test-retest reliability of posterior tibial pulse palpation to determine arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) and examine validity against hand-held Doppler ultrasound. (B) Investigate the suitability of using 130% systolic brachial blood pressure for prescribing cuff inflation pressure for blood flow restriction (BFR) exercise. Repeated measures, crossover design. Lower limb AOP was assessed in 20 adults ≥ 60 years using hand-held Doppler ultrasound and posterior tibial pulse palpation. Brachial systolic blood pressure (bSBP) was measured to predict cuff inflation pressures (bSBP130%). On three occasions > 24 hours apart, three AOP measurements were recorded by the same blinded rater to determine intra-rater …
